The pause between when Meyra had shared a little of herself with that stranger, and the time it took the other girl, who seemed equally uncomfortable, to process her words and also choose to reveal her Christmas memory that made her smile, made Meyra momentarily regret not having simply ignored the message on the piece of parchment she had randomly pulled from the glass container displayed on Miss Doukas's desk. Had she been too sincere? Exposed to much, to the point where now she looked like a weirdo in the eyes of her classmate?

So far, Meyra didn't know the other girl's name, but her features didn't seem completely unfamiliar and she had the feeling they had met several times during classes or inside Hogwarts's many rooms and corridors, even though she was almost sure that they weren't from the same house. Not strangely, but unexpectedly, the fact that the other girl had also revealed some discomfort with the situation of having to share something about herself with someone completely random made Meyra's smile soften and become more sincere and gentle.

"I see we both enjoy that part of Christmas Eve." Mey said to the girl in a friendly tone as she folded the piece of parchment again and calmly put it inside her coat pocket. "You're a second year too, aren't you?" Mey asked her serenely, still feeling the weight of embarrassment in the pounding of her heart and the slight warmth on her cheeks, but she hadn't had the courage to turn her back on the girl and simply leave her there after sharing such a personal information with her. Perhaps Miss Doukas's plan had actually worked...

"What is your name again?" Meyra asked, feeling increasingly hesitant and shrinking inwardly at making so much of a conversation with someone she didn't know. Perhaps, if she wanted to admit it (what she didn't), she was slightly afraid of rejection and that the other girl, unlike her, wouldn't have any problem turning her back on their convo and ending it in a more abrupt and less considerate way, "I'm Meyra. Maybe we've met before?..." Okay, that was it. There was no need to risk more on that interaction, one that could end up causing her some sort of disappointment on an afternoon that had started so unexpectedly pleasant!

Harumi heard there was an event in the library for the new year and the end of the holidays, at first Harumi didn't plan to go, she didn't want to have to interact with people, she was sure the usually quiet and empty library is now full of students, and she'd prefer reading a book without much people around.

However, it took her to only finish breakfast, and she had changed her mind, although she didn't wanna interact with many people, she was really curious to observe the others, and see how the library looked, therfore she decided to go later, maybe she'll even get the chance to read a book, or who knows maybe ten.

So by midday, she went to the library, upon entering her feet immediately sank into the several inches of snow, Harumi also saw a few students throwing snowballs at each other, she made a mental note to avoid them, looking around she noticed the cosy corner, a perfect place to sit and read a book, but first she saw a red box with golden ribbon on the librarian's desk, it seemed to be gifts for the students, they were taking turns reaching into the box and taking packages, Harumi decided to also take a turn, when it was her turn she reached into the box and pulled out one of the several packages, she stepped back to give space for the next person's turn, then she opened the package, inside she found two chocolate frogs, she smiled to herself, she hoped to find a new card for her collection.

Next, Harumi saw the glass container, she took out a little gift, it read "ask the person beside you about their first time having a snowball fight", I looked around, should I ask someone? The idea of talking to someone fills me with fear, what if they don't want to talk to me? What if they're planning to talk with someone else? I start overthinking, but all of a sudden something cold hits my shoulder, a snowball from the fight I had planned to avoid, it seems I wasn't successful, one of them apologises "Sorry, we didn't mean to", I look at him "it's alright, some snow can't hurt anyone" I say as I smile a little, before continuing "when was the first ever time you had a snowball fight?", the students seemed to be surprised by the question, but they seemed interested, a girl started "I had my first snowball fight with my siblings and cousins, I was about 5 years old, my cousins had to beg my mom to let me come, she feared I'd catch a cold" she then smiled nostalgically, a boy then said "my first was with my parents, I was 4, dad was the one to suggest it, mom was reluctant at first, she didn't want anyone catching a cold, especially young me" he then grinned at the memory, the others started saying there's too, soon it became a whole discussion between them.

After the snowball fights memories discussion ended, Harumi slipped into the quieter corner like she originally planned, she took a warm cup of tea and some biscuits to eat, then sat in an armchair, she sipped tea and ate the biscuits, maybe it was a good idea coming here after all.

Isabella looked around the library. She loved the library and reading, and to find that this place had amazing decorations, fun, and treats was excellent. She had come alone, though, which she was definitely regretting. It would be so fun if she had gone with one of her friends! Well, then again, it couldn't be boring, with her being colored like a Christmas light.

She was wearing a sweater with red background and white reindeer and white snowflakes on it, and a pj shirt and pj pants that were red. She was also wearing a Santa hat.

Bella wandered over to an area where there were many tasty foods to be had. She picked up a chocolate croissant and made her way to a chair that had a blanket, pillow, and, unfortunately, cold and wet snow on it. Well, she didn't really mind. After all, Bella was still in the holiday spirit!

She began to read, "A Christmas Carol" and was lost in her book until she heard, "paff!" And her head was suddenly wet. Isabella stood up immediately (though she set her book down gently).

"Who threw that snowball?!" Bella shouted. She then spotted a head poking out from around a bookshelf! There were also giggles coming from over there! She gasped and scooped up a handful of cold snow. Her fingers were really cold, but she needed to enact her revenge.

Bella kept spotting heads poking around corners, looking at her with laughing eyes. But they were always gone once she got there. Eventually at some point while Bella was running around like a wild goose, she ended up at the librarians desk. First, she looked in the Christmas Box and pulled out two chocolate frogs and a Christmas note. It read, "Have warm and fun holidays!" Then, Isabella reached into the next box, slowly.

The note from that box read, "Ask someone if they decorate their house for the holidays and how they decorate their house for the holidays." Isabella liked that idea, but she would have to find a random person.

Then she was distracted again when she saw another mischievous face poking out from behind a bookshelf.

Clutching the things tightly in her hand, she went on another wild chase until the faces led her to an area where she had not been sitting before. She looked around, how was she going to find her way back? And so she trekked through the 5-inch snow on her way back. Eventually she found the muggle Christmas stories section, which was where she had been sitting. Perfect! She located her armchair in the middle of the area. Sitting down into it, she saw this: There were a few other people in the area. Bella decided that she could share the message with them, albeit a little bit quietly and exhaustedly.

"Okay, so, I got a slip from the box on the librarian's desk. It says, 'Ask someone if they decorate their house for the holidays and how they decorate their house for the holidays.' So, the question is, does anyone here decorate their house for the holidays, and if so, what are the decorations?"

Fast with her steps, two braids swinging back and forth. Skylar was out of her dorm in a hurry, running with excitement, feeling mixed with happiness. Her breath caught up with her heart, beating rapidly. The holiday break was over, and she could finally see her friend again.

Even though she was the one who chose to stay at Hogwarts during holiday, she couldn’t lie she was being a bit regretful. Receiving letters from her friends for the first time, she should at least have a better, wonderful break to tell them. But, all she had was a boring day with a few exploring to share. Despite preferring a peaceful, quiet place, being alone in such cold weather with all looking-like misarable plants was too harsh for her, truly.

Where could she be?

The answer was the library, of course. That was her friend’s favorite place and should be the first place Rose would go after she got back to school. As she reached the small hall, many people gathered around, surprisingly. It was clear that she hesitated in front of the crowd, but also wondered inside. What was special on the other side awaiting?

The right foot walked further, passing a heavy, dark oak door. Her mouth was wide open, along with her sparkling grey eyes. Enchanted snow was falling in a closed space, as if she were outside. The scene reminded her of the stargazing night with her friend.

Something smelled sweet as her instinct straight to the snack already. There were many kinds of teas, hoping to find some chamomile scent. She was enjoying the present from the gift box that everyone was digging through, almost forgotten what she came here for.

One hand quickly grabbed a piece of wrapped gifts from a separate glass container, then searched for her friend once more. A short prompt letter made her frown a little as she walked. She crumpled it and promised that she would never show that to anyone.

Finally, her eyes caught up to the girl. Rose seemed busy trying to build something from the snow. The Mischief suddenly talked to her, smirking. She scooped up the snow beside her, formed it into a solid ball, then threw it out.

The bright smile began to fade. She completely forgot to aim. It’s sure hit the target, but not her friend. Someone nearby. Quickly, she was hiding among bookshelves before peeping between the narrow spaces. Who was the victim of her crime?

“Zeph?”

Skylar couldn’t stop giggling after finding out. She was trying to control her small laugh in a corner. What a coincidence!

Another day, another mound of work. She'd started her History of Magic homework before realising that she didn't know anything about the topic. They were studying ancient runes but she'd managed to zone out during the most important parts of the lesson, hence she headed to the place where one could find anything, the library.

It was a nice place with plenty of information but finding the right book could take time, the librarian was always helpful but you would have to know specifically what you were looking for. She treaded up the steps to the library, shivering. The dungeons were always colder than the rest of the castle and the never ending flood of stone steps didn't help in any way. It was the weekend so many of the older students were at Hogsmead leaving the castle's vast hallways empty. She began counting the portraits on the wall as a way to distract herself until she finally reached the library door.

She gently pushed the door open, only to be blinded by the pure whiteness of it. Every inch of the library seemed to be covered in snow but, somehow, it managed to keep its usual warmth and coziness. Jada tentatively stepped into the snow, hearing the soft crunch of it beneath her feet as she looked around in awe. The snow seemed to be coming out of nowhere and disappear before it hit any of the books. The shelves were decorated with festive wreaths and tinsel, contributing to the atmosphere. People were curled up in nooks, a book in hand, enjoying the festive decorations.

She walked up to the librarians desk, intending to ask for a book about ancient runes. There was a small group of students huddled around the edge of the desk, giggling and gasping. She leaned over to see what the matter was only to see one of them reach their hand into a small red box and pull out a slip of paper. Interesting she thought, waiting for them to leave so she could approach it.

After they had all had a go, the group turned and headed away, leaving Jada to approach the box. It was scarcely bigger than a box of tissues and a hole big enough to fit your hand into. She followed what the girls before her had done, reaching her hand inside and closing it around a slip of paper and two boxes. She grinned, recognising the familiar shape of them, Chocolate Frogs! On the paper it read, "Talk to someone you've never talked to before". Smiling, she headed off in search of her book, newly invigorated by the sweet treat.

The year 2025 had come and gone. It was a little mad that so many societies had developed traditions of abundance and extravagance to see out the end of the year. Shouldn’t it be a time for reflection? Take a break and slow it all down for a week. Discuss with your loved ones the successes and failures of the year. Decide what goals you might want to set for the next trip around the sun. Perhaps it did make sense to celebrate though. Life is not guaranteed, so why not go all out to congratulate those that had survived. Why on Earth was Harvey thinking about this? The boy shook the thoughts from his mind. Such heady ideas were a waste of time.

The holiday break had gone well for young Harvey. There were parties and galas, luncheons and dinners. Connections were made and business deals completed. It wasn’t much of a rest, but he felt that he had learned a bit and progressed in his goals. While that was all fine and dandy, it would be nice to return to the routine of Hogwarts. The break was fun, but goodness wasn’t it chaotic.

Now that the students had returned everything could go back to normal as they prepared to finish out the semester. However, it would seem that Hogwarts had one more festive event for the children being hosted in the library. Harvey was feeling quite fatigued on the matter, but it would be poor form to skip an official event held by the school. He could almost hear his grandfather nagging him now even at the thought of not attending. So, the boy dressed in his best Slytherin threads and made way.

As he entered the Library, Harvey had to stop himself from groaning aloud. Why was there snow in here? Did the staff not know who they were dealing with. Snowballs were already flying! This must have been planned for as Harvey spied some rather comfortable looking seats and one of his most favorite things! Tea and snacks! Doing all he could to avoid snowballs and reserving his best resting…angry face for those that even thought about launching one in his direction, Harvey beelined it for the cozy spot.

On his way he stopped by the Librarian's desk and retrieved a package containing some chocolate and a Christmas wish. Merlin knows he needed any more of either, but he took them anyway. There was also some prompts encouraging them to interact with their peers. Harvey would have liked to just sit with some tea and unwind, but he gave it a peek anyway. Strike up a conversation about holiday traditions and he wondered what he would talk about. Harvey lived with his mother and grandfather, but of who were goblin and celebrating Christmas or any other traditional holiday just wasn’t a thing in his home. They didn’t even decorate their home. He’d think on that while he waited to see if anyone came his way.

XXXXX𝕴n the new year, the very air buzzed with fizzing fireworks and joyful students reuniting in the halls, their pink cheeks and noses bitten by unexpected frost. House scarves wrapped around children and adults’s necks cozily, and winter cloaks hugged the frames of those cold individuals. The corridors were warm, and full of electric chatter.

Until it wasn’t.

A disconsolate Brookline strode into the hall, satchel snug on her shoulder. High spirits sank into her very toes, and head stuck stubbornly on the last word of the last book she had read in the library. Her appearance seemed quite shabby, her eyes wore deep, dark circles, and her skin seemed paler than ever. Yet, in a simple, oversized and baggy sweater and pale blue Jeans, paired with a unsophisticated, pearly necklace, anyone would never know what had happened to her, the way she concealed it was remarkable. The bags underneath those river-born eyes were most likely portrayed from stress and light sleep and not much as depressed.

Honestly, the Welsh girl had preferred the drafty castle with a small amount of students, over the holidays. Not full of students of all ages and houses, and she longed for the simple, empty rooms of Hogwarts again.

As she continued down the enchanted staircases, the young girl twiddled with a feathery, brown quill. There were multiple uses of a quill such as that one and this one was a little, makeshift fidget-toy, as she took one step at a time. Brookline wanted to get to the library quickly as hopefully there weren't a lot of people and all she could do was hide in the little corner in the library with a paperback in front of her small, narrow nose. Or perhaps she could find a table in the back, half concealed by dark, spindling shadows, and have a little go with the rough homework she had at the moment. Or maybe....

The second floor of Hogwarts proved tricky as Brookline skipped the false step at the very last second, and she decided to cram the quill that was in her willowy fingers, inside the little pouch in her satchel. Since her wand was already inside her satchel, she had switched the wand’s place with the quill, and the chestnut wand was tucked in her quite unkempt, chaotic Chignon.

Then on the first floor, she turned around to the Great Hall, first. Already scrawny, and already on the slim side, Brookline had to eat something. Despite the fact that she was not hungry, perhaps just a bite of golden toast, or a half a goblet of pumpkin juice. Couldn’t she go a while without food?

Couldn’t she??

When the Ravenclaw reached her house table - famous for brain and wit - she sat down and took off her satchel to hang off the side of her claimed chair. As she took a goblet, Brookline grabbed the crock of butter to help herself to a buttered slice of flaxen-coloured, toasted bread, and she took a swig of her copper pumpkin juice.

Brookline stopped herself short when she saw some younger Ravenclaws at the end of the table. Perhaps she could have a lovely, tentative conversation with them. New Brookline passed, her stomach performing wild cartwheels, and her chest full of anxious, wriggling sprites, fierce fairies, and enraged pixies. Old Brookline would have crept closer to exclaim a friendly hullo, yet, that outgoing shard of herself became crudely locked up inside the dark, spinding depths of her heart.

Snatching the heavy satchel, littered full of unorganized items, and much unneeded items, off the wooden chair, Brookline’s dusty nails sunk into the thick skin of her palm, creating dull half-moons and tears threatened to fall, to dribble down her cool cheeks, and into the particles of her trousers. She carried her proud yet dolorous self to the Library only to be overcomed with something quite unexpected.

Enchanted, sparkling snow fell from the ceiling of the massive library, making the room seem like a enchanted winter wonderland, and the usual carpet was covered in pale, ivory snow. Brookline glanced on, her mouth wide, and crepuscular, twinkling ocean eyes wide in complete astonishment. The library has never been covered in magical snow before! And to make matters slightly horrible, there were people everywhere. In the armchairs, behind the shelves, near the huge box on the Librarian’s desk. Students left and right, and the Welsh Ravenclaw assumed that this was an errand or gathering of somesort, most likely hosted by the new Librarian.

Brookline hadn’t met the new professor @Helen Aletheia Doukas yet, and now she was partly intrigued. To one of the announcement boards, the librarian had gained her new role in early November and despite the large numbers the Ravenclaw had entered the library to either work on late homework, or gain more relentless knowledge by reading, she had only seen glimpses of the working woman.

I think her name is Miss Doukas? She thought, and despite her correct guess, Brookline was still nervous, unkind moths fluttering around in her gut. Perhaps she should just skip out on human interaction, because there had to be people she knew; not new strangers to her. Or she could always try to slip into a musty corner.

And then someone would find her there. Of course the universe would have thrown that dreadful obstacle in there.

Brookline just decided to come in, despite the loud chatting that was currently bruising itself in her fragile head. She noticed that there were tea and other types of finger-like food, along with sweet treats that had been proffered, and the Welsh Ravenclaw made a straight beeline to the drinks and refreshment, acting like she had business in the room. She took a scalding, hot cup of tea, and went to the shelves to check out that novel she had the other day.

Finally found it, she took the old tomb off the shelf and headed over to a empty, plush armchair that was thankfully empty and somewhat near the corner. The paperback on her thigh was more as a symbol or a sign, as she didn’t it up to skim through it. Brookline’d carefully picked up her cup, and sipping from the glass like a healthy mother who cared more about paralyzing tradition and family, from the prime 1800s.

She shifted in the armchair, wondering what she would do if someone would approach her. Brookline inhaled sharply, as her mind had, of course, created a rather foolish excuse of the Ravenclaw witch profoundly messing up a conversation with a second year. The young Quinn squirmed anxiously, and the book had seemed to disappear as she didn’t dare flick her gaze down to the cover.

Whatever happened, Brookline would just have to conceal her rather complex emotions and converse.

Being back home for holiday was like no other. Hogwarts was amazing with tons of friends and challenges, but it was cozy back home, and there were no expectations of grades and assignments. The tranquility of being on holiday came and went, and in no time Concetta and all her classmates were back at Hogwarts to continue the second half of the school year.

When one of her dormmates suggested a visit to the library, they were under the impression she knew about the tea party arranged there by the librarian, but obviously, Concetta had missed the memo. Nonetheless, she went along with no further expectation than to study, or perhaps try to touch a cursed book. The library was always one of Concetta's favorite places to visit, so unaware of the impending joy, she entered to expect books and studying only to find the new librarian had made a winter wonderland of the space. Joy and the familiar feeling of childhood giddiness filled her spirit as she looked over all the snow and people inside enjoying it. Unlike real snow, the flakes falling in the library didn't subject your fingers to the same biting cold, but she was still lucky she had on her yellow and black wooly scarf.

The people throwing snowballs and having full scale snow battles brought a liveliness to the space, but Concetta preferred a quainter activity—making snowmen. The easiest method that was come up with by her and her friend was to push a bunch of snow into the corner before pulling it away, rolling it smooth, and repeat with the second snowball that was stacked on the first. Once assembled, they finished it with Concetta's scarf between the first and second snowball, or its "neck", and her friend's hat so it looked like a proper witch.

Snowman business done, they wandered to the librarian's desk where a few people were queued up. They didn't know exactly what it was, but people were pulling wrapped presents from a box and another from a glass jar. "They can't be queued for nothing!" she thought as she got in line behind an upperclassman while her friend left for a moment for a snack. Patiently, Concetta waited her turn until it was her turn to stand on her toes and reach her hand into the box, pulling out a yellow wrapped present. To not hold up the line, she put the gift in the pocket of her robe and reached into the glass jar for the other. Both gifts on her person, Concetta ran off to sit by her snowman, half to guard it against boys looking to knock it over, but also so her friend could find her when the reconvened. Her nimble fingers unstuck the tape from the wrapping paper to not rip it before unboxing two chocolate frogs, putting them back in her robe for later. The second gift was small, but when she opened it, she found a prompt from no other than the librarian Ms. Doukas.

"Ask the person beside you about their favorite part of the Christmas holidays."

A mischievous idea came in Concetta's hand to ask the person literally beside her, which would be the snowman, but to keep the spirit of the holiday and be fair, she waited patiently and ate half of one of her chocolate frogs while she waited for her friend to return. With a friendly grin, her friend was welcomed back, and had a prompt of her own to discuss as well. Being Jewish, Concetta didn't have any Christmas traditions, but her friend informed her of the beauties and Christmas, and Concetta raved about Chanukah. It was a beautiful exchange of culture and ideas between the two girls which left them with a deeper understanding of each other and their lives.

Meyra. Pam bit her lip, suddenly feeling more awkward than normal. The fact that the girl herself didn't seem to have any idea of what she should do with herself was both endearing and slightly concerning.

Well, it wasn't like Pam was any different.

She was clearly a second year too, Pam realised, nodding her head with a smile, "Yes, um, I'm a second year too. Hufflepuff..." He mentally groaned. Hufflepuff indeed. Had she needed to mention that? Then again, she wasn't in her uniform. No bright yellow highlights that would make her words obvious and make her look like a blundering idiot.

It was fine. She was fine, really.

Her name. She realised she hadn't given the girl her name yet, even after she'd asked. "Pam... Pamela Graham." She muttered, stuttering in her attempt to shift from her nickname to her actual name. "Nice to meet you?" Great work Pam. Could you make the question mark any more obvious? Keep it up. Ask the girl you literally just met whether you're happy to meet her.

Well, it wasn't like Pam was actually happy to meet her, but that was more of a "me" problem than a "you" problem. Pam didn't want to come off as rude. Not unless she meant it. She could be quite rude if she meant it of course.

"I don't think we've met before." She said bluntly, blinking at the girl. Although Pam was terrible with faces, mostly because she never paid attention to the people around her, even the faintest of her familiarity bells were painfully silent. So Pam was pretty sure she didn't know her.

Mostly.

Okay, change it topic, change of topic. She waved a hand around, "The library looks rather nice, doesn't it?"

Lily had been tucked into the far corner of the library for hours, a warm cup of tea in her lap and a well-loved copy of Magical Flora of the Brazilian Rainforest open on the table before her. She was exactly where she wanted to be: quiet, warm, and mostly undisturbed. Hogwarts had its fair share of chaos, but for a moment, in her little library nook, it felt manageable.

And then came the snow.

It was subtle at first a few delicate flakes drifting lazily down from somewhere near the ceiling and landing softly on her pages. Lily blinked at them, frowning. Snow? Inside the library? Looking about she muttered under her breath, “Really? A snowstorm inside the library? Helen Doukas, you’re ridiculous.” Lily shook her head and looked around. The floor was already coated in a soft layer of white, sparkling in the candlelight. The shelves remained immaculate, the books perfectly aligned.

Her eyes, drawn almost magnetically, landed on the big red box settled on the librarian’s desk. Other students had already started reaching in, pulling out small packages and opening them with eyes of wonder. She could not resist. Even if it was only to see what the fuss was about, she nervously approuched the red box, boots crunching softly in the snow. She pulled out a wrapped bundle: two chocolate frogs. She tucked them safely into her bag and unfolded the note,

“May your holidays be brighter than your spells.”

Lily read it twice, touched by the thoughtfulness, and folded it neatly beside the frogs. She folded the note neatly and stuffed it into her bag beside the chocolate frogs, already imagining savoring them later. Curious, Lily wandered over to the glass container beside the gift box. It was filled with slips of paper, each one apparently a prompt designed to encourage interaction between students. She ran her fingers along the edge and pulled one at random. Unfolding it, she read: “Strike up a conversation with the person who comes to sit beside you regarding their Christmas traditions and share yours.” Lily exhaled quietly, letting out a small, wry laugh. Socializing wasn’t exactly her preferred activity, but… it wasn’t impossible either. And the library, with its blankets and quiet nooks, made it more approachable than it would have been anywhere else in the castle.

She settled into one of the armchairs, tucking a blanket over her knees. Snowflakes drifted down softly around her, and she could hear the muted sound of laughter and chatter from other students. The first person to sit nearby was a younger Hufflepuff girl, looking slightly unsure of what to do with the magical snowstorm around them. Lily offered a small, encouraging smile.

“So… Christmas traditions?” she began casually, not too eager, not too reserved. “In my family, we usually do a large dinner and a ball to celebrate the end of year. Though I prefer when its just Mistral and I.”Conversation flowed naturally from there.

By the time she finally glanced at the clock, several hours had passed. Mistral had mostly stayed put, occasionally peeking out to see what other students were doing. Lily had interacted with a few more students, and shared a handful of stories. Snowballs had been thrown, chocolate frogs claimed, and all of it had felt wonderfully… alive.

Com estima e magia,
Lily gray
