Preparing to Ride PV

"Well, this is more crowded than I expected." Rosalyn said to herself, after making it to King's Cross Station, as her letter told her to.

There were people everywhere, and the majority of them just looked like ordinary people, not magical. Granted, in her sweater and leggings, she didn't look much different.

She checked her letter again, confirming that it truly said 'Platform 9 and 3/4', because that did not look to be an option. There were Platform 9 and Platform 10, but nothing in between the two.

She finally decided to just go up and check the wall between them. Perhaps there would be a sign, or a note, or any piece of information to help her.

Alas, there were none, but when she pressed on the wall, she felt...nothing. Like there was no wall at all, or like she was going through it.

She knew that this was not how a typical wall worked, but that there must have been a reason for the strangeness of this wall in particular.

She decided to test it, walking into the wall. If anyone asked what she was doing, she was prepared to say that she was not paying attention, or that she had just bumped into the wall.

To her surprise, and relief, she was able to walk straight through to...a place that looked much more like where she was supposed to be. There were all sorts of people, most looking to be around her age and the ages of the students able to go to Hogwarts, as well as parents. There were magical pets, students throwing dungbombs at each other, and so much more chaos, all packed into the space.

She took a deep breath in, attempting to center herself despite the chaos all around her.

After that, she decided to attempt to meet someone new, her being alone and all.

She saw a student standing near her, only a bit away, and decided to walk up to her. She was wearing a super cute blue cardigan, oversized and looking really comfortable. She looked pretty nice, and (hopefully) would have some clue what was going on. Otherwise, she knew that this was about to be a very interesting way to start off the train ride.

"Hello, my name is Rosie. Well, Rosalyn, but I don't go by that much. I was just curious-do you know what's going on?" she said, walking up to the girl.

"I mean, I am a witch, I'm not just here on accident or something. Sorry, I talk a lot when I get nervous, but anyways. I'm a first-year, and I didn't even know any of this existed until a couple of days ago, but here I am, I guess." she says, waiting for the girl's response, hoping that she knew what was going on, and if not, was at least nice.

Well, this is one way to start off her very first day.

Tired and overwhelmed were two words that summed up Geneva at the moment.

Yes, she was among witches and wizards, which was amazing, but also loud. Geneva had hardly slept last night from excitement, which did little to help her mood now.

Geneva’s mother, Esther, wasn’t there. There hadn’t been enough time for her to change shifts at the hospital, so she had said her goodbyes to Geneva the night before. Accompanying Geneva to the station was her older sister Maren. She held Geneva’s hand fiercely as students poured in all around them.

Finally, Geneva broke away. “I just need to throw away this wrapper,” she told Maren. In reality, she needed to step away to cry. She knew how difficult this was for Maren, who cared for Geneva like a second mother. Today, Geneva needed to be strong for her.

She walked over to a nearby bin as her vision began to blur. She didn’t know why she was so emotional when this should’ve been the most exciting day of her life. Although she had never been away from home for this long…

A voice from behind broke through her thoughts. She turned and saw a girl who was probably a first year too, judging by her size and the fact that she seemed quite confused. Geneva hoped it wasn’t too obvious that she’d been crying. Social interaction was draining at the moment, but she gave her best smile and introduced herself. “I’m Geneva. You can call me Eva if you like, I suppose. And I believe we’re getting ready to board the train,” she said with a grin.

The girl- Rosalyn- seemed worried that Geneva would think she wasn’t a witch. Geneva didn’t mention that a normal person (or as she should probably start saying, a Muggle) wouldn’t be able to get onto the platform alone, but she assured Rosie that she understood the feeling. She was evidently Muggle-born, which was one similarity. “Yeah, it has been a lot to take in,” Geneva responded. “But I’m really excited, you?”

There were students surrounding them, filling the platform, their voices echoing off the tall ceiling. Perhaps some of them would become good friends in years to come. Maybe this girl would be the first.

Valour had tried their best to help their father, Ambrose, fit in amongst the chaos of Kings Cross Station on a Monday morning, trading his robes for something a little less prehistoric. Their mother, Kaavya, had even made him trim his beard, which was growing far too warlock-like for the average muggle. The family unit still found themselves entirely underwater, helplessly trying to navigate around hoards of busy commuters. They must have been an odd sight, carrying old leather trunks with a wily looking long-eared owl flapping with irritation on Ambrose's shoulder. "Erin wants to say goodbye too", he had insisted, thoroughly overestimating the bird's tolerance for the general public.

In spite of it all, Valour kept up a brave face, trying hard to feign nonchalance as they approached the pillar between Platforms 9 and 10. Usually, it was rather difficult to spur excitement or interest from them but, today, their nerves were on fire. Ahead of them was a year of endless possibilities, far more interesting than the halls of their home they had come to memorise. People, muggle-borns even, professors, ghosts, secrets, and Merlin knows what else. Not bothering to wait until the coast was clear, they lunged through.

The Argentums were thrown into the thrum of young witches and wizards saying teary goodbyes and yelling at their friends after a long summer apart. It wasn't long before their parents launched into a lecture, mingled with fond recollections of their days at Hogwarts and unsolicited advice. Valour was too distracted to take much notice, staring at the scene unfolding before them. Children piling into carriages, owls crying and parents waving them off. As much as they enjoyed their own solitude, they began to wonder if they'd really find good company here - away from loathed pureblood high society.

By this time, Erin had made herself quite comfortable on Valour's shoulder, becoming a little more sedate now that they were among wizard folk. She preened and clicked softly in Val's ear, earning her an absentminded scratch from the young witch. Suddenly, a bad feeling came over Valour. They side-stepped quickly, but their intuition wasn't fast enough. Two slightly older boys, dressed in Gryffindor robes, were racing through the crowd, recklessly lobbing a Quaffle back and forth. One bellowed, "Watch the bird-" but at this point, the ball had already plummeted into Erin. The bird screeched and beat its wings in panic, surging towards two young witches. Valour could only rush after the owl, gesturing for the girls to move. "Erin, get back!"

What a terrible first impression.

Azrael is NOT a dhampir or a vampire, he's just weird, his skin is sensitive to the sun because he and his family are loners and prefer going out sometimes at night only because it usually means that not a lot of people are around, which has caused his skin to not get used to the sun properly and thus now it gets red and irritated when he's out during the day if he doesn't have any protection from the sun- yes, he's considered unsettling and eerie but it's not his aura, it's his eyes, they're big and owl like and he has a bad habit of accidentally spacing out and staring at people intently when they talk, so people consider him eerie, this was placed here to prevent misunderstandings.
______________________§___________________
Why did it always have to be so crowded when Azrael needed to go somewhere? He could swear that the streets looked emptier when he just needed to stay home.

But as always, the second he steps out everything suddenly fills up like it's Christmas Eve and everyone's rushing to visit family.

Azrael is trying his best to not bump into anyone, his big, round, unsettling eyes seemed to stare at nothing and everything at the same time...they were so big, that they appeared almost owl like- he hasn't blinked once, not even when people bump into him.

His face is completely unreadable- as blank as the void itself and as unsettling as it too.

People are beginning to stare...not because he's loud, but because his presence is strange...eerie, like there's something off with him, something not quite right..

Of course, Azrael is used to it by now, it's nothing he hasn't seen... people always stare at him and his family- maybe for their old styled type of fashion choices (gothic in an old sense)....or maybe because they look like they just crawled out of a dark hole and are here to haunt peoples dreams.

Azrael's skin is incredibly pale...not corpse like, but enough to wonder if he goes out into the sun at all (he doesn't).

As he walks, calmly carrying his luggage- he notices a group of girls...one chasing a bird that flew into the other two.

Of course, he wasn't planning on intervening....not because he doesn't like helping (he does), but because he's never interacted with animals much, and perhaps his unsettling gaze can freak out or make certain creatures aggressive.

But of course...he didn't even have time to think about it as the bird rapidly approached in the direction the 3 of them were now standing in.

He moved out of the way slightly to allow the bird to pass- and when it did, he turned to look at the girl who was currently chasing it.
______________________••___________________§- "... excuse me, do you need helping catching it?"
_____________________••____________________he calmly asked, unblinking gaze settling on her as he spoke in his usual calm and monotone voice.

Eyes then flickering to the two girls beside him....he simply waved slightly, not used to talking much at all.

He was carrying around his umbrella, which was shielding him from...well, pretty much everything- people, the sun...mostly because it was big and took a bit of space when walking alongside people, it looked like it was made specifically to keep distance with people.

And it cast a dark shadow over his entire body- making him look more eerie than usual.

"Oh! An owl! Flying right at me!" Rosalyn said, blurting out the first thing that she thought of as an owl crashed straight into her head.

"Ow..." she said, rubbing her face a bit. The owl was on the ground, and she was a bit too afraid of it to pick it up. She just left it there, looking around for whose owl it could be.

"Oh, hello! Does this bird belong to you?" she asked, noticing the person chasing after the owl, and hoping that it belonged to them, because otherwise this was going to be an awkward interaction.

She noticed a boy standing near the group of her, Geneva, and now the other new person running closer, and he gave a little wave. She waved back, not sure if he wanted to join in the conversation or just stand over there.

The boy seemed pretty pale, and Rosalyn could relate. She had never been that pale, but she tended to never tan up very much, leaving her the same shade no matter the season. He looked a bit eerie, but also pretty cool, with the umbrella giving him a mysterious shadowy look.

"Umm...I don't know who everyone is. I know Eva, you just introduced yourself, and if you'd rather me just call you Geneva, let me know! For anyone who I have not yet met, my name is Rosalyn, but Rosie is a lot better! And you are?" she said, addressing the group as a whole. Or, rather, the people in her general vicinity, as the other two were not yet officially joined into the conversation.

"And if that is your owl, then I guess I'm sorry that my face hurt it maybe?" she said, addressing the fact that the owl was on the ground still. It didn't look too hurt, but on the other hand, Rosalyn's face was probably a tad bit bruised, but it would be okay.

One of the girls Erin had pounced towards was hit directly in the face by the giant bird, meekly offering some kind of apology to Erin. Valour and her parents rushed after the owl, only pausing for a moment at the group that had assembled in the middle of the station. The witch keen stare darted between the three. A young girl with bouncing golden curls was nursing her cheek, which appeared a little scraped by Erin’s talons. She looked gentle-natured and nervous, Valour couldn’t help but feel a pang of pity for her. The girl beside her stood a little taller, looking at the bird defensively. They gathered this was ‘Geneva’, as the blonde has mentioned. She appeared a little more mature, despite the redness around her eyes; clearly it had been a difficult start to the day for everyone. The final student who had been caught in the array was an almost ghostly figure. Valour raised an eyebrow in his direction; he mirrored her bug-like stare. Perhaps a kindred spirit.

Despite all these split-second judgments, Valour focused on the real issue at hand; her father’s owl currently drawing far too much attention to her. The entire station had begun to stare as they jumped back at the sight of the angry bird. Erin had at this point started pecking at the ankles of students and squawking angrily as their shoes narrowly missed her tail. The bird was so riled up, it began to find momentum again, flying towards a girl entering one of the train carriages. Valour went pale.

“Uh- Awfully sorry about her. And, sorry about your face. Rosie, was it? Yes- Well. Perhaps I can apologise properly when I tame this blasted owl.” And with that, Valour pivoted on their heel, shouting sternly after the owl as they chased it onto the Hogwarts Express. “Come back here, you wretched thing!”

The witch left the trio a little stunned, certainly making both an entrance and an exit. It seemed as though there was no getting through to them right now, but perhaps your paths would cross again during your first few days.

"Well then, that was very interesting!" Rosalyn said, still rubbing her cheek a bit. She had a few sensory issues with touch, and that was a huge one, so she was feeling a bit overstimulated by the whole thing, but it was fine, everything was fine!

"It's alright, nice meeting you...?" she said as the owner of the owl ran away and after the owl, onto the Hogwarts Express.

"Well, I didn't quite expect that! Are you okay? Did it hurt you at all?" she asked Geneva, making sure that the owl hadn't gotten anyone else. Rosalyn would be fine, she'd just have a little scrape for a bit, but it wasn't too bad.

"Hello over there! I'm Rosie, what's your name?" she said, as the boy standing under his umbrella was still just...standing there, looking all ominous and mysterious.

She knew that she'd already introduced herself, but he hadn't, and maybe if she said it again he would. Or maybe he just hadn't noticed them. Who knows!

She almost dropped her bag, but managed to catch it before it hit the ground. She had spent a while packing and really didn't want things to come spilling out before she was even on the train, that would just be upsetting!
