I believe AI will be very helpful to us in... might be in 5 years time. But as of the moment, there are no alternatives to remedy the [horrific] consequences of using AI and therefore we should be... smart. Actually, I cannot find a sufficient number of articles that talks about the environmental impact of Artificial Intelligence as this topic is mentioned as a sort of an afterthought. Or... they are being filtered.

Like, "besides the point of AI dulling your critical thinking skills and cognitive abilities... oh, yeah! AI data centers consume bajillion of litres of water in 2025 alone! But anyway!"



Good thing I do not know how to identify a generated AI response or I will be shaming anyone who thinks they can reply to my threads with AI slop. It has no place in here.

I'm going two-cents in here and then dip for various reasons so I don't suggest replying to this, this is just me getting my voice out there.

I play AI role-playing games, they are chill, but nothing compared to this. I don't feel like AI should be allowed on Hio because a lot of people put a lot of efforts into their posts, stories and plots. I speak from experience. As someone who stepped away because I felt like I wasn't giving my best to my thread partners and felt they deserved better, and as somebody who has dedicated an entire google docs to my next gen character even though he won't exist for another three years. Ai doesn't deserve that time and effort. Anyone that has the capability to go roleplay with Ai if they want to, they should be able to come here to play with actual people with real creativity.

Its not that Ai doesn't require effort, learning how to make something good with it definitely requires a learning curve. Its the human interaction. Sure its all done online, but I can feel a passion behind posts here on the site that I don't feel when I roleplay with Ai, and I would really like it to stay that way.

I don't know how images snuck in here but as somebody with an AI generated image for their character I think they should be allowed as character images and in posters BUT NOT COMPETITIONS WITH REWARDS. There is a fine line between using Ai images for fun and using them at the cost of an artist. Most of my characters images are Ai generated both here and on other platforms because they only last less than a year, and if Ai didn't exist, I just would put up with not having an image for that character [or use an Actor's image]. Sense its not taking away money or a prize from anyone, I think its totally okay, especially if you're just messing around and creating random images like an octopus having tea with a capybara or your character as a mermaid.

I think using clips of AI images for banner competitions are okay, like say you need a certain shade of rhododendron in a certain position you can't find in pictures so you generate what you're looking for and then shrink and arrange it on your banner in a fancy manner. Long as the entire banner isn't an AI generated and theres more effort behind it than a workshopped prompt.

Msotly and most importantly though, I don't want this to become an issue. I don't want people to get into fights about this, let it infect the server, cause there to be some sort of divide, or for harassment/isolation to accure because somebody uses AI. I say this as somebody who has had to deal with it before and still hurting.

Hio is easily the friendliest and least toxic roleplayng site you are going to find. More than anything, I want the identities of the people who used Ai in posts protected and for Hio to stay the safe, welcoming place it is now.

I am transparent about our tools. You get a few free a day I generally do not reach out unless it is about 100% because grammar checkers and such do cause these to ping and even I when I actually check my spelling and grammar without a checker will ping as 30% but I have been online for decades so I was also a source for scrapers. Pinging as AI can be explained with legit elements like I said previously, but let them answer for themselves.

AI is inevitable, for sure. I am probably coming off as very hostile to the AI users out there—it did come off like that, what am I saying—I was just aggravated at the thought that someone was caught using AI-generated response to a thread. Fully AI-generated—or else no one will be posting about it in the first place.

My posts are probably littered with grammar mistakes and the awareness of it triggers my system dramatically, being that I am also a perfectionist and desired my works to be perfect. Nowadays I just wing it to avoid using AI. If someone goes out their way to correct me, I would be very grateful—all snot and sobs combined. My mind just buzz irritatingly, "oh yeah, you overlooked a grammar mistake, what would people think of you now" and it will spiral and I am actually fighting all odds to not use an AI translator. Being bilingual and self-taught, I form sentences in a way my native language would, like a blueprint. It's a curse. Grammar mistakes will be expected.

So, I suppose my stance here is: Full transparency with AI usage should be in order if AI is not something we could flush out of our system in one go.

Actually, let's refrain from using grammar checkers and just learn together. I learned English by interacting with the said language material anyway. Post it as it is. Let's just go hand-in-hand and correct each other. Let's read together. Let's watch movies together. Let's help each other. We will learn that way! I'm searching for book buddies anyway. Owl me. No use relying on AI if we are not learning anything in the first place.

I deeply apologise too about my statement with "grab a thesaurus like a cave person" or that I will be shaming anyone who dares to reply a fully-generated AI response to my threads—it was combative, hostile, and immature. I regret it immediately after posting because I know what it feels like to be unwelcomed. So sorry!

I haven't had the time to read through everything on here, but pretty much anyone who knows me knows how I feel about AI, and it's been really, really reassuring to hear some of my concerns reflected here. I really don't have much else to say - Thea's, Livia's and Aurelia's (as well as quite a few others') comments have summed up pretty much everything I feel needs to be said, but I think it's probably worth mentioning there's yet another person who agrees AI rps should be kept off of this site. All of us here are writers, and AI has definitely stolen our writing in the past to make the agglomeration of words it spits out to prompters - I feel like that's enough to feel disheartened enough not to use it. (as a visual artist, it gets even worse, but that's not what we're talking about here). Even if we go past how absolutely horrible AI is environmentally, if we're just thinking about this site, my main confusion is just - why? Why are you on a roleplaying site if you're going to use AI to write your posts for you? Where is the fun in that? Are you even reading your partner's or your own posts? I don't see why RPing with a bot wouldn't be better, instead of making someone else do so through the intermediate of the site, or read a book - if you don't feel like putting in your own effort to bring your character alive, I don't think roleplaying is for you. I'm not saying this in a "get out I don't want you here" way, I'm just genuinely really confused. Isn't the whole part of rp your ability to make it your own, to create together? If you don't feel like creating, there's so much media out there for you to consume. I don't really see the point in having an oc if you're going to let a machine make all your decisions about them.

AI may be "inevitable," but that doesn't mean we suddenly need to accept it in every aspect of our lives.

I've read up on the discussion and it was an interesting read. Most seem to be on the same page too, and I haven't seen anything I personally disagree with either.

However, I do believe that something is being overlooked a lot, especially in the context of moderation: the development of Ai.

We've accepted AI images as allowed to be used on site because apparently those can be hard to catch. But I vividly remember when AI images started and if you tried to generate a character/person, you'd get deformed eyes, extra fingers and other weird anomalies. Not a year later, you had more AI programs than you can count and they rarely have these faults anymore. And that's why we accept AI inages on site even though many of your arguments apply just as much to images as they do to writing? Environmental impact, the scraping of other people's work etc. It's all the same.

And the development of AI doesn't stop with images. This is a creative space where obviously AI is silly to use to replace actual writing, but whether we like it or not, its use is only going to expand and its capabilities will get far better than they are now.

So my question for the community is: how far are you willing to go with trying to police/moderate it?

I understand moderating it in applications, events and homework systems etc, but how will you moderate Roleplay for AI in let's say a year or maybe two? We trust in tools and "AI tone" to catch it but how will they perform when AI written posts becomes harder and harder to distinguish from real ones?

I worry about AI paranoia, where in the future false accusations become far more common because the tools improve and match people's real writing far more closely. It doesn't make for a fun atmosphere.

That's why I lean way more to what Meyra is saying. She's not disagreeing with the opinions about AI, but chooses to self-regulate. I do the same. Whether I know someone is using AI or not, their writing and ooc behavior in collaborative storytelling with me determines whether or not I want to write with them.

I believe it's totally fine to have rules against AI use and to discourage it, but I also think we'd take a dangerous route if we try too hard to enforce it and punish people for it beyond very obvious cases, especially with an eye on the future.

Hello, everyone. I have done my best to read through the five pages of posts that I have missed, but I myself am not an AI, and I would not paste any of your words into AI without your consent, not to summarise it or to help me read it or whatever. With that in mind, please note that I do not have everyone's opinions as of yet.

A frequent theme that I have seen is that many of you come here to roleplay with actual people, as do I. We put a lot of effort into our RP posts, as well as errands and homework. Many of us (I certainly do) try to write in ways that will make things interesting or amusing to our fellow RPers, and I would frankly be quite offended if that went to waste on an AI.

However, many people would like to experiment with AI's capabilities, especially together with other people with similar interests, or to test how well it develops with long, quality human input.

I think that AI content, while quite aggravating when used for homework or errands, competitions, etc., should be permitted for our personal images (I do use this for my OCs' profile pics). I also think that it should be allowed for roleplaying, especially for those aforementioned interested parties. But, very importantly, I feel everyone has the right to know who- or more specifically, what- they are interacting with. It would be great if we could openly allow AI RP (so that players wouldn't lie about it), and add an indicator for topics. The easiest way would be to add an [AI] tag in the title of AI written topics.

In summary, while I utterly reject the use of AI for tasks with rewards (a.k.a where effort is the entire reason you get the rewards in the first place), and the use of AI without informing the other included parties, I believe that some people want or don't mind AI writing, and that they should not be rejected as long as they do not cause trouble to others or use AI in inappropriate situations.

Edit: Please don't read to bash my comments. I am on the fence with ai, ok with it as a tool and for art but not for writing an entire post when it violates our rules here for plagarism and for not having someone else write your post. This is just a longer post to get around to these points.
Edit2: I don't think regulating it is the best. I feel it's only going to harm us. If your first response is to ban, I don't think I would like sharing an rp site with you. Plus, not that banning them is going to stop ai usage, it's going to create problems within the community and reduce our members and then reduce the amount of people we have coming in.

@Solomon Lear - I don't use AI to write Elmo's posts, but I do ask it to help me figure out *how* to write Elmo, example: I have never really gotten drunk before, have I drank alcohol (maybe...) but have I overloaded and again, got drunk? No. I don't have this experience so I don't know how to write it.

PS: I also used this to help me figure out how to write Clark suffering under the effects of Darkest Night. I didn't know at the time what all those keywords were for Darkest Night and I needed help figuring it out (big words confuse me Lear) so I could write a proper response of someone suffering under the effects of that potion.

I also tend to write characters that do whatever the heck they want to do, because it does not bother me and it's easy being random in response. However, Elmo I wanted to be a bit more of a structured character, if that makes sense? To maintain a sense of development throughout. And when I get bored of a thread, I'm stuck. I don't know what to say, and if I were to pause, it'd take me maybe a month or longer to even come back and hit at the bare minimum 200 words. If I didn't have the assistance to help me figure out how to write Elmo, then I would 100% struggle.

But Lear, I do believe that posts should not be written vastly by ai and I, especially as someone who graded homework and moderated, hated to reach out to someone about using AI to write their post for them. I know we accept users that are young, when I was 13, my papers in english were NOT 200 words. I always struggled writing a long story and I always thought that my three paragraphs were veryyyy long until I came to hio.

I started my online rp in a one liner rp community. I still firmly believe that 200 words is a bit of an effort to reach, but that's only because I have been burnt out for months, stuck with essays after essays after essays, didn't really write longer papers until like 15? 16? (I joined hio at 15), and I personally avoid long writing roleplay sites if I know I'm gonna get burnt out. (Hio is a special case as I can't find myself leaving it, no matter how much I feel it would be good for me.)

THE POINT IS, using AI as a tool to HELP you come up with ideas or to help you out with the development is my preference, I also, as much as art people will hate me for saying it, have no problem with them using AI for art. I do have a problem with them writing a full response using AI. It sucks when people use ai to write their posts for them in a matter of minutes when you have spent a long time figuring out what the heck to say.

When users are new to writing extended papers that might be longer than a hundred words, it takes more effort and kinda leads you to feel disincentivized and demotivated to actually finish the reply, or by the time you finish it, you might not even be interested in making another reply, wanting to find something that's easier on you, something that won't make you feel tired of thinking and make you feel exhausted.

SPEAKING FOR MY BROTHER now:
My brother has epilepsy, it has hit him hard the past few years, and it has caused a bit of brain damage. Plus, he is deaf, his primary language is ASL, so sentence structure is a bit different. He does his best to communicate with you, but he will not write a long response or paper or anything that is longer than maybe 50 words because he struggles to think of words and struggles to put them together in a way that logically makes sense descriptively. So while I might be able to say.. "The giant dragon roared, its fiery breath roasting the crowd and the side of the castle with it's rank rotten fish smell and orange flames licking the stone..." he would say "The dragon roar, fire breath smells like bad fish."

If you notice, it's less descriptive and is much shorter. With ASL as well, I can also shorten most sentences that is said in English with just a few words too, unless I was signing exact english (SEE).

For this point, I'm saying that my brother, if he ever did roleplay on here (he has an account), he would struggle writing literal responses and would resort to using ai to reply. I'm being serious, he does the same on his school papers.

His grades aren't great either in classes that require all that writing and testing, but he does even better hands on with car parts and woodshop. I'm trying to point out that other than students having English be a secondary or tertiary language, my siblings and I have all grown up differently. My sister struggles to understand what it is she reads, and really only hits maybe 100 words on her papers before she's burnt out and starts working on craft stuff and watches Kdrama. I am able to, now, hit 200 words but I get burnt out so easily.

So again, just to make sure I'm being clear... I am ok with AI being used to help people write, but I am not ok with them writing a full post or roleplay using AI's own words and not theirs. Using AI to help is the equivalent of asking someone for some ideas or for some suggestions. Using AI to write your post for you and claiming it as your own is plagiarism. Even if you did claim it, we still have a rule, iirc, about all posts being your own, how you can't have other people write your posts for you, yada yada.

And... I have no problem with ai art. My profile images are all ai generated variants of the original face claims. I, honestly, don't feel as comfortable searching for face claims of children anymore. I also don't like looking for their art someone drew of them.

I've read a majority of the posts here, but not all, so sorry if I'm puppeting someone else's opinion.

I have a pretty strong stance against AI usage in creative spaces. Everything we post online is being scraped and used to train AI models without our consent, which is an ethical dilemma in itself, so when I see people from creative spaces trying to replace the human in art, it feels hurtful. I can't get into everything, but I'll address something I can personally speak on— the accessibility claims.

Now by "accessibility", I don't just mean for mentally or physically disabled people, I mean making it more accessible to everyone. The argument that AI should be used for younger individuals or those who are non-native speakers is a little disheartening to me. For the millions of us who grew up RPing, we did eventually get better. I'm sure the RP I did at 13 sounded terrible and repetitive, but it took life experience to grow and learn to write descriptively and thoroughly. I'm sure if you explain to your partners that you're young and inexperienced, they'll be understanding. Same with non-native English speakers. I'm sure we've all read fanfiction with the preface, "English is not my first language, sorry for any errors". For people who can expand their writing capacity, that should be worked upon without the use of AI.

I cannot at all speak for the plight of mentally or physically disabled people. I'm neurodivergent, but I won't act like it is extremely detrimental. I was gifted in language arts as a child, and the only complaints I get on my writing are misspellings (from mixing letters and numbers/their order), mixing up word tense, and the tendency to over-explain. The tool that makes writing accessible to me is spell check and proofreading.

From reading Vladislav Liam Gunther's post above mine, I've gained a new perspective on AI usage for writing in that context. I feel we have the tendency to morally demean people on the assumption they're purely lazy for the use of AI LLMs like GPT, but there are situations where it is necessary. Yes, a person could transcribe and rewrite the writing of Gunther's brother, but independence is important for everyone, regardless of their physical and/or mental ailments.

I do think acknowledging things like that can become a slippery slope of everyone seeing a loop they can exploit and all claiming it's what they need, but there are no non-invasive ways I can think of for the staff to circumvent this. We see it time and time again in a variety of contexts. There will always be people that use disabled people as a scapegoat and say, "well some people are disabled and they need this". The staff could require people who need AI for accessibility privately contact them to get a go-ahead, but it's not exactly realistic to expect people to be so forthcoming with their disabilities. I do think your RP partners should know about AI usage in any capacity. I spend around 30 minutes on each response I do, and the knowledge will be better than finding out and feeling cheated.

In order to accommodate those with disabilities, there will be some people that exploit the system. That seems to be the bottom line for me. That goes for IRL and online. I've personally seen neurotypical teens claim autism to get fast-passes at theme parks. It sucks, but this is still a system that needs to exist for those who need it. I don't know how homework should proceed with AI usage with everything considered. It's a hard decision to make, and not one I'm comfortable commenting on.

I feel like requiring a verification about someone's medical diagnosis isn't really.. a good idea. When people need something, like an accommodation, they can be their own advocate. So, I'm not arguing in support of using AI, but I'm also not arguing against it. All I'm saying here is I don't think we need to invade someone's privacy behind their screen and ask them if they have a disability or require them to reveal that they have a disability.

(and yes, I'm one of those people that get fast passes at the theme park because I'm disabled, but I am legitimately disabled; deaf-blind (usher syndrome type 1b. They don't ask about my disability, don't require my id either. I'm able to just walk up and ask for one and they'll just mark down my shoe color and ask me if I can sit up straight and walk up steep slopes. Then I sign the paper and enter through the exit of the rides and ride the front. It's just simple and they don't ask about my disability.))
