The past month had been hellish, to say the least.

Come the end of September, Esme had just decided to focus on her studies. The green on her robes still plagued her, but the distress it brought was far more mellow than before. She was over it, she decided — she would remain intelligent, quick-witted, and creative, no matter what that old rag of a Sorting Hat said. Ravenclaw or Slytherin, she would persevere and prevail. The moment she was ready to get past it all, past the bad group projects and annoying Dueling Captains, her father sent her an owl. An owl detailing a social call he took the liberty of setting up, with one Cecilia Merrick, who Esme quickly learnt was impudent, impolite, tactless, and annoying. There was a whole list of adjectives she could add; no insult described the level of grating she found Cecilia to be.

Luck would have it, the very next day, Esme found herself stuck in a room with Cecilia. Worse, it was Cecilia and two of her little lackeys. M-something-stupid and Percival. M-whatever was annoying — in the same way Cecilia was, only lacking in her finesse and (annoyingly) good looks. Whereas Cecilia had at least some reticent good manners, M-irritating had none of those. Esme had her hair dirtied by the little cadaver-looking thing of a girl and her habit of throwing algae. A grave offense in Esme’s eyes. She cared for her hair above any other part of her appearance; to have it and her personal dignity along with it so blatantly infringed upon—

Then there was Percival. Percival, as opposed to annoying, seemed merely stupid. He spent the majority of their time stuck in that room staring at Esme. Rude, sure, but she could ignore it — she did, for the majority of their time there. Stupid was fine, she thought. Right? As long as his stupidity didn’t cause her any trouble, she could avoid him and be on her merry way along.

Of course, Percival’s stupidity did end up causing her trouble.

He ran into her a few days after the Fall Ball escape room. Not ran into to as in met in passing, mind you — physically walked into as Esme was on her way to play chess with her cousin. The collision ended up breaking her beloved chess set. The gift from her grandmother. The one of crystal glass and an ornate case. Esme thought she would lunge at him then and there. She could still remember the seething anger that made her fists clench and her jaw tighten.

She had to send it to her parents, who had to send it to a special workshop to have it repaired. Annoying, expensive, and time consuming. She only got it back a few days ago; at the worst time possible, really. Right after being appointed prefect, when she didn’t even have the time to see Camille, her friend, on Halloween. At least it was back here, now, she thought — or tried to, anyway. A deep frustration had been sitting in her bones for the past two months: it was going to take a lot more than her chess set getting repaired for it to pass. Alas, it was a start.

Esme situated herself out in the courtyard after the day’s classes. She set out the board in front of her, hoping to clear her head with a game against herself. At least she could relax now. She picked white, watched as the opposing army's pieces set themselves up on the board. Her eyes glazed over each figure as she cleared her throat and began to idly call out moves, directing the crystal glass soldiers at her command. Moments like these had come to be a rarity since being appointed prefect of Slytherin. Patrols and being errand girl had filled her schedule; it was rare to get a moment just to herself, and even rarer that she did not decide to dedicate it to one of her extracurriculars.

Esme leaned back against the stone wall, closing her eyes and inhaling deeply. At least her chess set was back, now, right? She could get back to games with Stella or with Livia; perhaps Camille would be down for a round one of these days. Either way, now she could relax; do something pleasant with her time for once. “Knight to C4,” Esme said, forcing calm into her voice.

Hearing none of the usual movement that followed after a piece was commanded, Esme opened her eyes and looked at the board. The knight hadn’t moved.

It stayed in its place, stubbornly so. Esme glanced down at it — and found the figure on the back of the horse turning back around to look at her, as if confused. No, not confused; upon further inspection, the look on the figure’s miniature face was downright annoyed, mocking, even. Esme narrowed her eyes.

The enchantments on the chess set should have been working properly now. That was one of the advantages of wizarding chess, after all; the self-moving pieces. The method to it all usually helped organise everything, all the thoughts swirling in her head. All the… stuff. Why wasn’t it working today? On the one day Esme was hoping to actually use that fact to her advantage, to properly relax?

It seemed that was not the case today. She felt frustration boil her blood again. Stupid Cecilia. Stupid M-who-cares, stupid Percival. Stupid Silas and stupid prefect badge at her stupid green robes— it took concentrated effort for Esme to inhale deeply one more time and calm herself. Her tone was clipped. So was her expression.

Did I perhaps stutter? Knight to C4,” she repeated, enunciating the words with precision, and perhaps more than a little irritation. The figure, clearly feeling confident in a way Esme hadn’t in a few weeks now, turned its little horse around on its square to stare at Esme, offering some unintelligible advice — or perhaps it was complaints. Whatever its enchanted little self was trying to say, all Esme heard was whining. What was a piece of glass doing trying to tell her how to run her army; a piece of glass that used to be very good at listening to her orders, mind you?

Esme stared at it, incredulous. “I’m sorry, are you forgetting who the player here is? Knight to C4. Now.

November. Two months since the new academic year started and a month out from endless festivities. Most of the leaves had turned orange now, if not fallen onto the pavements. Hogwarts was losing that 'little touch of green' since their first day. That wasn't so bad, of course. The only concern Vera had was perhaps the insulation of the castle; it was hundreds of years old, and definitely not up to whatever modern standard the government had set regarding healthy homes. But the castle was also hundreds of years old and educated thousands of wizards before her time. Chances were they had already adjusted to the extreme cold that was about to settle over Hogwarts like a white fur coat with all sorts of magic and spells and potions. The school had taken care of itself in years past, and it would continue to do so without Vera meddling in it.

It was still mind boggling. All of this was still mind boggling. The concept of magic truly existing, schools hidden in the fog and unscalable terrains across continents, and whole civilizations that operated parallel to another where magic was simply a children's tale and everything could be explained by science.

No, they could wave their wands and there would actually be a consequence to their actions. Whatever concoction of bath products they used to dump into empty bottles during bath time were a knockoff of actual potions that could truly affect someone's physical or mental state. They could fly hundreds of metres off the ground on sticks instead of holding it between their legs and running along the grass. None of this was fantasy anymore. This was real.

Vera was still trying to wrap her head around it all. The first month had been overwhelming, learning the gestures, the schedules, the layout of the castle. There was a moment when she nearly became one with the castle's stone walls after mounting a broom for the first time. She nodded along to many proposals she didn't know anything about, courtesy of being appointed captain to a sport she was barely familiar with. Apparently, she had the appearance of one, though she doubted it. Then, she scraped by a duel and won at the last second, despite believing for many rounds that the odds were decidedly not in their favour that day. Had their opponent's spell not backfired, Hufflepuff definitely would not have won that duel.

Despite it all, Hogwarts was treating her well. She had no obligations outside of getting to breakfast, lunch, and dinner on time, and don't stay out past curfew. The dorms were cosy, and there were staff that handled the food, laundry, cleaning, and everything in between. Whenever she had questions about wizarding life, people were more than happy to answer her questions. Living at the castle was nothing short of comfortable.

Of course, that didn't mean she knew everything about the wizarding world. Unfortunately, there were still things she had no idea about.

Like the girl in the courtyard yelling a move to a chess board.

The girl in question was a Slytherin, if their emerald green robes were any indication of their house, and with strikingly white blonde hair that could likely blind anyone if the sunlight landed on them at a certain angle. It was the bright shade of blonde mothers would obsess over and hesitated to cut off their children's hair once they aged and had more dirty blonde or darker hair. At least, that was what happened to Vera at around seven years.

Appearances aside, Vera was curious about the board in front of her. The board was pretty much the same as any chess board Vera had seen her father and brother play at home, but the pieces were different. It was hard to see from this distance, but she could tell the pawns had a different shape compared to the ones she saw at home.

Vera watched as the girl continued to speak to it, uttering her move and articulating it more with each failed attempt. Vera looked at the girl, then the board. Why was the girl not just picking up the pieces by hand? That was an option, was it not? When Vera's father and brother played, they simply picked up their pieces and only spoke when a check or checkmate occurred. When Malcolm was first starting out, they spoke every move. But once Malcolm mastered the art of talking to himself in his head, it was a quiet game.

(If only Malcolm would talk to himself in his head more often.)

This wasn't home, though. This was Hogwarts. This was the wizarding world. Things were different. Who's to say chess wasn't also different between worlds?

Curious, Vera carefully walked up to the Slytherin girl. She cleared her throat. "Sorry," she began, "Pardon my interruption, but I was just curious. Do you not have to move the pieces by hand?"

Up close, Vera had a clearer picture of the board. All the pawns looked like soldiers rather than short and plain. Many pieces on the back row had swords, shields, and other accessories. It was an intricate set, like someone had designed it with a story in mind rather than replicating everything else that was on the market. The battlefield-like design of the board was miles more interesting than whatever she had back at home, and it gave her a new perspective on what the game truly was. A battle.

She tried to recall her father and brother's games. Even though the boards were different, the principles were the same, no? Vera didn't exactly know which direction A to Z was, let alone 1 to 8, so locating C4 was... not exactly possible. She knew vaguely what pieces were which, though, and knights were the horses. Well, in this case, there was an actual knight on a horse. A quick scan over the pieces, which were still in their opening positions, gave Vera an idea.

Vera hummed. "I'm not exactly an expert, but you may want to specify which knight you're moving." Vera pointed to the queenside knight and then the kingside knight in quick succession. "You have two on the board."
