AI Use and You

I feel like maybe it could help to have people who use grammarly (or another app) post their original work on a reducio? After all, I don't think anyone using AI would want to manually create a draft every time they rp just so they can keep using ai.

Another thing I believe would be good to add to separate non-native English speakers that write in their own language before using a translator is putting the original text in the original language in a reducio beneath their post. I know some people already do this, but not many. This could help a lot of people that actually do use an AI flagged translator to be separated.

Those who have been flagged for AI and use translators are asked to post their original work in a reducio. I am a firm advocate of not scrutinising anyone who is not a native English speaker for translating their own work to integrate into an English speaking platform.

Using AI to outright do posts for you on a creative writing website defeats the purpose. Whilst there are a lot of views being shared here, it’s important to remember that upon signing up for this website, you understand that creating a character and posting a character must be done by you.

I understand at times it can be daunting considering the cesspool of diverse and talented writers, but, with any skill, you can and will improve, whether it’s writing or any form of art shared onsite. It just takes practice and AI usage for RP will hinder any progress.

Keeping my personal views to a minimal at this moment in time.

There is one flaw that I need to remind everyone here: anyone can claim to be a non-native English speaker solely to continue using translators or any other tools for that matter. It's so easy to lie and pretend about that information. I've noticed that this is also the case on other RP sites. Besides, Grammarly has integrated AI now, too, so you can't really say it's only for checking grammar these days.

Re images, there are some AI image detectors, but I have not used them personally and I imagine they probably struggle in similar ways to written AI detectors. I do, however, think doing a reverse image search is one of the best ways to check. Most images are already somewhere online as opposed to an AI generated image, which would be unique.

This is, of course, opposed to checking by eye, which is more time-consuming. But you can tell quite easily by looking at details. Misshapen hands, dead or lifeless eyes, repeating patterns, perspective/proportion issues, unnatural light effects (refraction, reflections, shadows, etc), excessive smoothening, and that uncanny perfection are all tell-tale signs of AI in images.

Zephyr has a good point, but at the same time, maybe it could at least make people think twice before using AI? Since you have to provide a draft, creating one with AI (regardless of the language) will probably ALSO flag it as AI, so the only option left (that I can think of) would be to make a draft from scratch, and if someone is using AI to make their threads- then I'm not sure they'll want to take time to actually make a convincing draft, especially since it requires effort- then again, they COULD probably try to do it with AI, but AI is bad at making drafts, they're clean, generic, and you can often tell when they're made by ai, but idk if it's just me not seeing the bigger picture, so correct me If in wrong!

hi! I just wanted to add my own input about AI. Nothing about this is targeted to anyone, and shouldn’t be.

I’ve used and seen AI, but I have never used AI to write my responses. I know I have read AI writing, and other people’s quite talented writers’ writing, using it only to help improve my writing. I like to search up synonyms, because as a whole I am positively passionate about writing. It hurts my heart reading this paragraphs about how people in the HiO community is against AI, that people on this very site have taken people’s hard-worked replies, turning it in a RP response for their own character. I would feel extremely upset if someone used AI for a reply to my post as I spend hours on my replies after thinking how I would write them in my head for a week or so.

It also hurts my heart that some people here have had their amazing art stolen by AI. I won’t lie; I’ve used AI for character pfps but ever since I’ve seen signatures on some of AI’s generative pictures, I’ve stayed away (and AI picture prompts) from those pictures because I know for a fact that people take so much time on their drawings, sketches, and art and I don’t want people to think I stole their magical work or betrayed them in the worst way possible.

I believe AI can be used as a tool, but never as something that can do all your work. It’s why schools don’t let their students use AI to work on their homework. You never learn anything from it. I rarely use AI on my homework (expect for French because I can’t speak or write much in French), because half of the time AI gets it wrong or doesn’t work due to our horrible WiFi. My family member takes home tons of homework (and she’s only in middle school ) and uses AI to help her with it, some little background (non-revealing) information on her; she’s amazing at math (gets high grades while I get D’s and C’s, despite the fact that I’m older than her), and most likely be better at it than myself. I keep telling and warning her that AI will never work on her homework because sometimes she gets points knocked off because she gets it wrong thanks to the “very superior” AI. Proving my point that despite how much people talk positive about it, it’s doesn’t work as good as the intelligent human brain.

I’d also like to speak more on Maisie and Elena’s points in their discussions. Today, was the first day I ever learned (yes, I know, I live under a rock) that AI platforms use water and other vital things for humans and the environment to survive. I searched up on it, and it literally broke me reading Elena’s statement that countries have been dying of thirst due to the galleons of water used to cool down AI data centers. I mean, did you know that AI practically uses about six times more water than Denver? Searched about the time and energy goes into AI prompts and found this website on the AI water consumption here at AVP.com. Onto Maisie’s statement about AI is theft, and I completely believe and agree with them. Over the few years that I’ve used AI generators, every so often, like I mentioned in a earlier sentence, I see that someone drew this picture or another and now I realize that it’s disgusting how much AI just scraps over the internet to steal or match patterns as Google and other websites say, just for a prompt or two.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read my little speech on AI! Also, there may be spelling mistakes and grammar mistakes as I’m not feeling exactly the best and I’m so tired yet can’t sleep (will be skimming this in the morning to check for mistakes lol). Hope everyone has a nice day/night!

I'll be honest, it is pretty obvious even with awesome translators that a translator has been used. There are phrases that lack a 1:1 translation. I can also see IPs, I know the base language. I know what languages lack pronouns. I can see when it takes someone 15 min from initially reading their partner's post to when they posted a 600 word coded post. People are less convincing liars than they realize. Just because I don't push the point does not mean I was fooled, it means I learned you are a liar.

As someone who is trying to complete a degree in the creative sector, it's disheartening that people have come to rely on AI so easily. Yes, I see the intrigue. But no, I don't advocate for its use to replace - nevermind mimic (to a much poorer degree) of actual human talents.

Before anyone says it, yes, it's rich coming from someone who has a generated image as their profile picture. Hypocritical even. Never did I say I'm proud of it, and I'm not shaming anyone who has AI generated content in theirs. I see why others do it. See if I could draw or design to the same extent as other people's efforts in their banners, I wouldn't be using AI at all for my profile pic. But there's nothing I've found so far that represents my characters the way I want them to. When I have though, AI won't be in my artwork on Hio.

I don't agree with AI in the slightest, not even in an academic sense. Everyone can think for themselves and write essays in their own capabilities. If you scrape a passing grade in a subject using your own human thought, writing and technique, that's still 10x more genuine effort put in than whatever you feed and produce from ChatGPT. For translation purposes, I'm a tiny bit more lenient, since there's a lot of software involved to translate documents instantly. Not to mention English isn't the easiest language to grasp (I got tongue tied trying to say "sea shell" earlier today for crying out loud...)

Now. As for writing.

It's a well-known secret by now (among most if anyone) that I'm an undergrad taking a creative writing degree. I write because I enjoy it. I do not write just for it to be taken advantage of by a bot. That's one thing. It's another thing entirely if someone uses AI to spurt out a response to a post which I take hours carefully planning, writing, re-writing and editing. Even the shortest of my replies have genuine thought behind them.

I've had arguments with other people outside of this site about the use, interest and joy I have about creative writing. All of them have said that what I'm studying and wanting to do beyond education is worthless. Shockingly - or not, depending on how you see it - these are all people that have been completely enveloped by the "wonders" of AI generated text. For years I've been upset by people who believe AI should be the new normal and that the arts is a dead sector not worth pursuing, regardless whether it was for leisure or as a source of self-publishing. Now I'm just frustrated with them - these people are the personification of "I want to be an artist/writer/music producer etc, but I don't want to do any of the work and just let AI do it all for me" where there's no passion or heart behind it

To those kinds of people, I want no interactions with on this site. This is a roleplaying site where creative writing is an active tool for posts and responses, writing and developing stories. I won't deny anyone a thread or reply if they don't write as often as others, or whose writing style is different from another's, and so on. Anyone who writes using their human brains and intrigue, will always be welcome to thread with me. They get to show off their writing style and ideas, and I get to show off mine. Win-win for each side. All completely achievable without AI doing the writing for you.

Christ, there are numerous IC/OOC clubs that promote creative writing and reading books scattered across the site. My Literature Club included. The whole purpose of that club was to help writers learn a few tricks and ideas they could adopt to improve or switch up their writing, and for others to consolidate their work and practice different styles and headspaces if they wanted to get out of their comfort zone and try something new, myself included. The fact that some people think AI should replace that astounds me.

I'm nowhere near a perfect writer. I can list more people on this site than my fingers can count that I'd argue are better than me. That's because they show off the best forms of creative writing I've ever seen and represent what the arts are capable of. They entertain me with their posts and I always feel immense joy threading and forming replies for them in return. They inspire me. AI is not inspiring.

I've never once used AI in my writing during my years on this earth so far and I wouldn't change that for anything. That's not going to change period. AI has no place in my writing.

Anyone can thread with me at any time, provided they give me their full heart and imagination behind a post, no matter how gritty, silly or poignant the response. If not and would rather use AI thinking that's how they can match me and other's posts, then don't bother.

That's my first and final warning towards anyone who dares to write using AI. AI doesn't teach you how to write a good book, let alone a RP post. Only you can do that. Can't be bothered making an effort? Don't waste my time or anyone else's.
