The third year had heard about a new professor joining, but he was not aware of the name or the gender of said professor; neither was he entirely sure about the class the new professor would be teaching. So maybe, after all, he might not be the best for an errand that was supposed to be a greeting for said new professor. Yet Alan was a easy man and the promise of candy and house points alone had picked his interest immensely. He had been looking forward to this errand, the one where the students would be decorating delicious treats; but sadly enough were not allowed to eat them themselves. No, the treats were for the new professor.

Alan had caught a glance of the new professor before, at the Great Hall, but in the mass of people it was difficult to make out any specific features and Alan would maybe meet the professor another time. The class was not really one of interest to the young Gryffindor either, as he would rather learn about more interesting subjects, that taught about facts and things one would actually need when growing up. A sigh escaped his lips, as he entered the Great Hall, with a curious expression.

Soon enough he could sense it, the sweet smell that filled the air, made his mouth water and more than before he was disappointed that the sweets were not for them. But he loved decorating them or was sure he would enjoy doing so. So the young Gryffindor walked up to the table the house elves had prepared and looked at the different baked goods and sweets they could choose from and chose...

... some of the Marzipan he saw on the table along with some of the instruments that seemed to go with the candy. Alan actually never had done anything with marzipan, so he was quite curious about how it would end up and accepted the challenge out of curiosity to gain some new experience and knowledge about candies. Surely he would be able to do okay, or at least that was what he hoped. As soon as he made his decisions thoughts of doubt formed in his head as he glanced down at the mass of sugar in his hand. Well, who cares, he thought as well... it was not he who had to eat it!

She was excited to hear about a new professor coming to Hogwarts, sure she barely knew the current professors but she was excited to eventually meet another nonetheless. She looked forward to eventually being able to take Divination in her later years, for now she'd have to settle for helping welcome in the professor to the family.

As she came into the Great Hall she headed straight to the tables with the house elves and all the sweets she could decorate, she was deeply upset that she couldn't eat any of them because they looked so good but she would have to practice her strongest self-control to not stuff a cupcake in her mouth. To resist the temptation she went with decorating marzipan instead. She grabbed one and a couple of decorating tools before turning around to scan the Great Hall for who else was decorating, before her eyes landed on a familiar Gryffindor. She headed over to him, her walk having lost it's familiar bounce to each step because of recent events.

"Hey Alan. I see you went with marzipan to decorate, I grabbed the same one!" She hesitantly sat down in front of Alan, wondering if she should've asked but he seemed nice enough to let her sit with him anyway. She stared down at her marzipan, lost on how even to start even though it was probably incredibly easy to decorate. Usually her creativity was off the rails waiting to be released but there was an eerie silence in her head that prevented her hands from moving. She figured she could make a crystal ball so she started piping blue frosting as the background.

She paused to put her hair up so she wouldn't have to worry about professor getting more than they bargained for in the marzipan decoration. "I haven't seen you in a little bit, how are you doing?" If anyone were to look at her face they would see the pain and tiredness hidden behind once joyous eyes. There was a sadness to her smile that never quite reached her eyes even when she tried her best. She just needed a distraction for now, and this was definitely good enough.

Since her arrival at Hogwarts, Lydia had been pleasantly surprised by the amount of extra activities that were organised for the students. She had already participated in the International Women's Day one, and it had been such a nice experience that she couldn't resist joining another one. This time the students were allowed to decorate sweets for the new Divination Professor, Rosalind Kibitzer, and even if they were not allowed to eat them, at least they got the chance to make them look pretty and with their own personal touch.

She walked into the Great Hall full of excitement and immediately spotted Griseldis, the Gryffindor prefect that was also at the Women's day event; Lydia shyly waved at her as she made her way to a table where all different kinds of tools were displayed. There were so many possibilities to choose from, and even though decorating cupcakes sounded really fun, Lydia couldn't help being tempted by decorating some marzipan. She took everything she needed and then looked around for any familiar face. There were already different groups of people spread over the tables, and they all looked pretty busy and caught up with their work. So Lydia kept looking around, until her eyes landed on a familiar face.

Sitting at a table, together with a Gryffindor boy, was Willow.

The fellow Hufflepuff had always been friendly with Lydia, and the red headed girl really liked being around her, so she decided to walk up to her hoping that she could sit with her and the other boy.
"Hi!" she said as she finally reached them, her face displaying her usual smile. "Can I join you guys? I've never decorated marzipan, but hopefully it won't be too hard!"

Jake was very wary of school functions that involved large groups of people coming together.

First, the Halloween ball. Then, the Valentine's Day tea party. Both had been disasters.

It was enough to ward him off for good. He was all ready to never go to another school function as long as he lived.

Then he had heard about the dessert decorating...

That had really made him think.

Jake had never really been allowed to do much in the kitchen. The stove could burn you, and his Mum kept him away from anything but the safest things. He was allowed to watch from a safe distance, but that was all - cooking was for grownups, which his parents had made very clear. Decorating desserts was one of the few things he WAS able to help out on though, and he had always loved it. Getting to help made him feel important, but it wasn't just that. It was art, really, not that different from his drawings. If you had a delicate hand, you could make lots of patterns and pictures. Snowmen on cookies for Christmas, pumpkin cupcakes for Halloween....getting to eat them afterwards was just a bonus (but what a bonus it was).

He hadn't gotten to decorate desserts in so long...it felt like forever since the last time. You could draw with colored pencils, crayons, even paints...but how often did you get to draw with icing? He was a better artist now, too. So though part of him felt nervous and like this was a very bad idea, Jake decided to make his way to the Great Hall and see who was there. If it was too overwhelming, or if things started to go South, he would just turn and run without a second thought. It wasn't a holiday, after all. Maybe this one would be ok...?

Even so, Jake still wanted to bring Freddie, just in case things took a turn for the worse. The problem was he still wasn't sure how ok it was to carry him openly, so after a little bit of thinking the boy took his stuffed animal and placed him gingerly in his brightly-colored backpack. This seemed like a nice compromise.

Then, he put on the backpack and made his way to the great hall.

As soon as he arrived the little Hufflepuff's eyes practically came out of his head. There were so many sweets! Cupcakes, cookies, ...it was enough to make an eleven-year-old's eyes spin. He raised his nose and sniffed the air, the delicious smell of treats the type of thing that would make a character float if this was a cartoon. Suddenly, Jake felt very hungry. But it sounded like they were going to be in groups today, and Jake hadn't brought a friend.

But oh look...wasn't that...it was! Jake recognized a familiar face after all, a boy he had become friends with recently...or at least Jake thought they were. Jake still didn't know how to tell when you were friends with somebody or not, but he knew the other boy was nice and had a kindly way about him. He had a stuffed animal like Jake did, and his trunk had been full of animal stickers. He hadn't made fun of Jake when he'd been crying, and had been kind to him when he'd needed it. He had even let Jake hold a precious lion figurine. Those were all facts, but more importantly, Jake just liked Alan, and that was all that mattered.

When he got closer, Jake saw that Alan wasn't alone, and that made him pause for a second, but he recognized the two other girls from Hufflepuff and so he approached and gave a small wave.

"U-um hi..." he greeted shyly, his voice soft. "Could I please join your group...? I-I'm pretty good at decorating," he said, giving a small smile to Alan.

The third year sat down at one of the places at the table, where he found a green baking mat made of silicone and smiled lightly. He should forget his previous thoughts; right as he sat down he was hit by waves of inspirations and he was gonna make the most beautiful marzipan figurine the magical world has seen. With that thought ingrained in his mind, he placed down his lumb of sugary mass onto the mat, the sweet texture of it already sticking to his fingers, as he peeked around to see if anyone was nearby. But right as he did, a familiar face was approaching him, making him store the thought os sneakily tasting the treat for a later point, when he was not being the focus of anyone's attention anymore.

"H-Hi Willow!", he replied, smiling at her brightly as he poked at the chunk of sugar in front of him. The density surprised him a little but he assumed it was like playdough, where you had to squidge it first, for it to become soft and easy to form. "Y-yeah, it tastes yum, but I never saw it looking like.... l-like this! It h-has no form at all, I wonder i-if it will even taste like marzipan!", he mentioned with a exaggerated huff, but he was clearly not mad or anything, just pretending to be more bothered than he actually was- and he also just really wanted to try the marzipan and if it was in the name of science, who would shun him for that?

"I am d-doing well, how ab-about you?", he asked the girl who was sitting in front of him now. Alan could not put his finger on it, but the girl seemed different than the one he had met in the Great Hall or in the library, when he was returning that stupid book; he just really hoped that he would not have to ever read it in Griffith's class. He loved the class and would even torture himself to read paragraphs for it, even if it took him quite a while to actually get through them, but that book would honestly be the cherry on top. He would probably refuse to read it, even if he had to and somehow find someone to tell him every little detail that was described in it instead or maybe read it to him.

When another girl approached their table - one Alan could not remember seeing or talking to before - and asked whether she could join them in their activity, Alan nodded excited. He also knew that Willow probably would not mind, she was a people person, or at least that was what he assumed after meeting her for the first time in the Great Hall, when he had meant to hide there together with Ruka. So when he nodded, he motioned at their table, with a light grin; the smell of sugar and marzipan making him more excited. It was as if the smell of the sugar alone was enough to give him some sort of sugar shock.

When Alan however saw another familiar face approach, his face lit up, "Jake! C-come on, of c-course you can join! Just t-take a seat you two!", he said, ushering them to sit down at the table by waving his hand in an excited manner.

Wren was awake.

She had been endlessly wandering around the school, bored beyond relief. It was a Thursday, so it meant that she had classes and homework but was one day away from the weekend. Friday-Eve they had liked to call it at her prep school. For some people being awake was a no brainer. Something you always were it wasn’t a question for someone to be awake. But for her, it was a trail. It was hard to stay awake in class, hard to stay awake walking and being as awake as she was right now, well that was an accomplishment. Since she was so awake, she decided to do something.

A friend of hers had invited her to go decorate cookies or, more specifically, marzipans. Marzipans were a type of dessert Wren had personally never tasted before. This wasn’t going to be the day, she was to taste the fine goodness, but she would beautify these pieces. If it was the last thing she did. No-one and she meant no-one was going to ruin this for her.

She walked into the room and, seeing Alan with Willow and a few other people she had never met before, she walked up and took a seat next to them. She had an easy, inviting grin on her face and after greeting all of the with a friendly ‘hello’ she picked up a marzipan to start decorating it.

Willow had begun decorating her marzipan carefully, focusing most of her attention on the task at hand. As much as she was beginning to enjoy Alan's presence her capacity for talking to others was quite low. She hoped that she could decorate a couple things and then head out without seeing to many people. Even though she was having a bad time, she wanted to help welcome the new professor. She barely registered that Alan had responded to her, "Oh, um I'm doing fine. Thank you for asking." But that desire was tested as more people approached the table.

She couldn't be too mad as it was a couple of people from her house, Lydia and a boy she had seen around the house but hadn't gotten time to talk to Jake. If there was anyone to be surrounded with it was her fellow Hufflepuffs. A small smile spread it's way onto her face as Alan welcomed them to join them. "Lydia! I'm happy you're here." Lydia always had a sunshine aura around her but maybe that was because of the house they were from. It was a typical trait of a Hufflepuff. She leaned forward to great Jake as well, she didn't know much about him but he seemed nice. "Hi there, I don't think we've ever actually been able to have a proper introduction. I'm Willow! It's lovely to see you outside of the common room." She was addressing Jake of course, and paused her decorating to be able to talk to people.

Just as she started to go back to her decorating, someone else approached the table. This would be more than enough people to help keep her distracted from the stormy cloud above her head. "Hi Wren! Welcome to our marzipan party." The smile stayed on her face this time, taking solace in the people she was surrounded with.

There had been whispers as of late, rumors of a new Divinations Teacher amongst the halls of Hogwarts. It went unsaid that the old teacher, whatever her motives may have been, was unable to continue her teaching at the school – a sad fact for some, surely, but not for Rafael. Yes, he’d heard of Nadège, and no, he hadn’t met the fair woman. Maybe that was to make him a terrible person, not wanting to go out of his merry way to meet his professors, but even in the case that such things would truly matter, the boy didn’t and had never truly cared about such things. Any teacher who had ever instructed him would surely know this – it was no secret that the boy wasn’t a teachers’ pet, as he never had been.

Rather, any teacher he’d ever known during his eleven years of life had loathed his presence in the classroom, cursed upon his attendance, even, as the boy was more terror than tame, a true lion of a child who’d never really put up any effort to try to pacify his peers or his teachers in a classroom setting. And, he supposed that part of his ill actions were intentional – he’d always secretly enjoyed the discord, as danger had always attracted the young boy like a moth to a flame. Damn, he loved fire. And yelling, at that. To make a teacher angry was to begin a beautiful song of anger and dissonance, a perfect painting of disharmony in which he’d always loved and adored.

That being said, terrorizing his elders had only ever been a pastime of his class hours, as there was nothing else to entertain his wild imagination during the infinite hours of long, mundane lectures. On the contrary, there weren’t currently any rules for outside of school hours, for the instances in which he might meet one of his instructors outside of the classroom. To be honest, the boy had yet to have a proper talk with one of his teachers, save for Professor Price – though, he couldn’t be sure if that interaction actually counted, as the circumstances had been less than favorable. Whatever the case, the idea of meeting the acquaintance of a new teacher was quite appealing, as appealing as uncharted territory might be to a weary explorer. His curiosity was burning in the pit of his stomach, as it had been for the last month, driving him on and spurring him into action – he had to meet this new teacher, if it were the last thing he did on such a desolate earth.

Which, really, was the only reason he’d ever agreed to do such a tedious errand. Times had been quite busy for the last month or two, as Quidditch Season was starting up once more – which meant, more practices, meetings, and games. Something that was a blessing as much as it was a curse, the young Captain supposed, as Quidditch had always been more than just a game to the boy. However, such things seemed to put a strain on one’s social life, as schedules seemed to get jam-packed with places to be, homework to complete, and duties to be fulfilled. Errands, therefore, were difficult to make time for. However, in the name of meeting new acquaintances, the young boy would happily comply – there was more to life, he supposed, than schedules and due dates. What was life if not a unruly adventure, laden with chaos and unruliness?

For these reasons, the boy had entered the small hall, a determined look upon his tan features as his footsteps carried him forward. His eyes quickly began to survey the nearby tables for a familiar face, someone, anyone, to captivate his attention and make such an errand more bearable. And, he’d quickly found one – his close friend and fellow Quidditch player, Wren Caster. Oh, lovely. With her, were a few other familiar acquaintances – Lydia, and Willow, two rather pleasant girls he’d met during a hide and seek game, and Alan, a kindly, if not shy, boy Rafael had met in the Gryffindor Common Room. There was also another unfamiliar face, a boy with a very child-like face and a shock of dirty-blonde hair. The boy wished he could say he’d seen the child before – perhaps in a different errand? He wasn’t able to recall.

Though, such things didn’t matter at the moment. Without so much as a second thought, the boy’d immediately walked over, slipping onto the bench beside Wren in a playful manner, his eyes bright and laden with his own cordiality. “Decorating marzipans, are we?” he asked, a cheeky grin on his face. “Mind too much if I join you lot?” Then, without really waiting for an answer, he’d picked up some of the dough and shortly got to work.

Lydia smiled at Willow and the Gryffindor boy as she sat next to him. She was going to introduce herself, when another Hufflepuff boy came to their table. "Hi, I'm Lydia!" she said to both of them, her smile still on her lips. She started organising her material, dividing the marzipan by colour and placing the tools from the taller to the smaller. Sometimes she had a little bit of obsession with symmetry and order, but it never properly got out of control.

She started forming a little orange ball, thinking about creating an orange and other fruit with the marzipan, when a Gryffindor girl joined them. She introduced herself to her as well, and then her eyes wandered around to see what everyone else was doing. As she did that, her eyes stopped for a little longer on Willow, and she noticed that there was something different about her. Usually the fellow Hufflepuff was full of joy and with so much energy, but that day she looked calmer, even sad. Lydia was tempted to ask her if everything was okay, but she figured that maybe that wasn't the right moment, just in case it might have been something personal.

As she worked on her orange marzipan, Lydia started to think that maybe her idea was a little too simple; she knew that marzipan fruit was quite popular, and she wanted to add a little bit of her personal touch. She frowned a little as she started at the ball in her hand, when an idea popped into her head. She took some of the black marzipan and some of the white one, finely rolling out the first one; she cut a little string from it and attached it with some water on the orange, then she created two white circles with two black points inside, and attached them as well.

Lydia put down her smily orange on the table and nodded to herself, satisfied of the product. The fruit did look quite cartoonish, but that was exactly the effect she was going for. She started working on more fruits, mixing a little bit the colours to have some shades, and she had to admit that she was having a lot of fun. She created the general shape of a couple of pears, some apples and even a banana. When she was finally satisfied, at least for the time being, she started creating eyes and mouths for her marzipan fruit, adding some eyebrows as well to give them an even funnier twist.

Lydia stretched her back and took a little break from rolling out marzipan, and noticed Jake's brightly coloured backpack and she couldn't help but comment on it.
"Jake, I love your backpack!" she said with a bright smile towards the fellow Hufflepuff, "It's so colourful and... full of joy! I used to have one a little bit like yours back at home, full of colours and pockets!" she added. She remembered how much she had loved that backpack, she would bring it literally everywhere, until one day she had forgot it on the train while going to London to visit her Grandma.

Lydia went back to work on her little marzipan creations, when a sudden, familiar voice stoles her attention. She looked up just to see Rafael sit at their table and start working with some marzipan.
"Hi Rafael!" she greeted him, her usual smile on her lips, before focusing back on her fruit.

Alan was glad, when the Hufflepuff girl mentioned that she was doing fine, he had been worried for the quarter of a moment, but he was glad that he had been wrong. He slightly shook his head, when she thanked him for asking, as if to tell her, that there was no reason to thank him or anything. The girl that had joined their group, introduced herself as Lydia, but Willow already had mentioned her name, so he assumed that Willow just seemed to know a lot of people. Whenever they met, Willow just seemed to know people and it was quite noticeable, but he also assumed that it must be because she was so nice and likeable!

"I'm Alan, Alan Vanes; it's a pleasure to meet you", the Gryffindor muttered with near perfection, as if he had been studying the sentence to make a flawless introduction. He smiled, when the blonde girl decided to sit down next to him, hoping she had enough space on the bench. Soon enough he began to kneed the sugary mess in his hands for a while and realized the bits of it sticking to his fingers lightly like a coat of sugar on his skin. The cold mass slightly warmed up and got more easy to handle and it just reminded the third year of the playdough he had associated the marzipan at an earlier point.

The third year was just a tad bit overwhelmed with the given task, but quite sure that he would be able to do well. Not only well, he would do amazingly! Alan looked up from his hands, when he noticed even more students approaching them, tow Gryffindors that looked familiar to the third year. One girl, that he had recently met, when he had been discovering the Courtyard and a boy he had met in the Common Room before... an experience he was unlikely to forget anytime soon. But he was happy about seeing them again, so he relaxed slightly, smiling at them as they approached the table.

"H-Hi Wren,", he mumbled, greeting the girl nervously, before turning to nod at the Gryffindor boy, "O-Of course! F-Feel free to join! It's n-nice seeing you t-two again..." Alan greeted the taller boy as well, a soft smile tugging at his lips, before he stared back at the marzipan in his hand, that was now sticking in clumps to his fingers and quite difficult to work with. Alan was not sure if he was doing something wrong, but he stared at the multiple small balls he had formed the marzipan into; even though some looked less spherical and more like some potatoes.

He soon enough heard a screech that made him look up from his task as something sharp nipped at his hand, seemingly desperate to draw his attention. The sharp nip that had been given by the owl to his fingers, made him flinch back and stare at the feathery animal as if it was an alien of some sorts; having no recollection that it had been there moments ago. But apparently he had been so focused on using the playdo- the marzipan, that he had completely forgotten about what was happening around him and with that the owl that had arrived about a minute ago. Alan huffed at it, but then frowned when he saw a note attached to the creatures leg. Alan gently placed the ball he had been forming on the silicone mat.

Alan took out some silk tissue, wiping his hands clean, before he took the note from the owl's leg and unfolded it carefully, scanning the message written on it in a neat hand-writing.

Dear Alan Vanes,

I would be pleased if you would join me in attending the Quidditch game this afternoon by the entrance to the Hufflepuff stands. If you are in any way indisposed, please send an owl in reply. If not, I look forward to your presence.

Kindly,
Flash Holmwood.

A light smile found its way on the Gryffindor's lips, happy about the small note. "Oh-", he would hum softly, in pleasant surprise as his thoughts took over his mind once again. He would love to join Flash in watching the game and he never had been to one of the Quidditch games before either, so he was quite excited about how this all would go. Maybe Flash liked Quidditch? Was that why he wanted to watch the game? Alan shrugged mentally, not sure why, but definitely happy about the fact, that he had been requested as company. He had only recently discovered the joy of writing owls and receiving messages from people who were not in talking distance, but he never would have expected an owl from Flash.

Folding the note and pocketing it into the empty pocket at the back of his pants, he smiled at the owl, sadly having no treat for it with him, he watched as it took off; probably annoyed that Alan had wasted its time like this. Alan got lost in his thoughts, his eyes following the owl as it disappeared again.
