Astrid felt suffocated inside the castle, surrounded by so many people, so she had hurried outside into the cool air, her one gold and one blue eye scanning the outside, the beautiful snow, the silence, the beauty.Word count: 323
She went to sit beside the lake, knees drawn to her chest as she stared out across the lake, contemplating everything at Hogwarts. It was all so amazing, sure, but also the homework, the drama she heard, the little to no sleep from stupid nightmares that kept her up all night. She sighed softly to herself, her red hair stirring around her shoulders from the light breeze that had carried across the lake. Her usual sun kissed skin pink from the cold, her freckles standing out against her skin.
She flexed her fingers in her gloves, gosh it was cold out, but she didn't want to go inside at all. Inside meant crowds and noise, she didn't want that right now, she wanted quiet. She looked up at the sky, feeling cold snowflakes fall onto her face with a feather light touch. Astrid closed her eyes, just letting the quiet wash over her, before opening them again and staring out across the lake. Many people had said she had an amazing singing voice, describing it as sounding perfect, and feeling oddly... right. Astrid had always been self conscious about her singing voice, and nervous singing out in the open, but no one was here right now, right? So she could sing. She cleared her throat gently and started to sing, letting the melody echo across the lake.
My phone has no signal
It's makin' my skin crawl
The silence is so loud
The lights spark and flicker
With monsters much bigger
Than I can control now
Welcome to the panic room
Where all your darkest fears are gonna
Come for you, come for you
Welcome to the panic room
You'll know I wasn't joking
When you see them too, see them too

The air was cold and crisp, not ideal weather for flute playing, Ada thought, but it would have to do. Ada clutched her flute case, fingers red with the cold. The grass crunched under her boots as she made her way down to the lake. Small snowflakes fell from thick dark clouds, resting in Ada's hair like stars. She sat down by the lake, legs tucked neatly beneath her. She placed the flute on her lap and opened it, relieving the beautiful wooden flue her father had given her for Christmas.
It felt good to be outside for a change. Despite the cold Ada felt free. Like she didn't have to be anyone but herself. Ada held the flute to her lips. She had always felt self conscious when she played. there was always a nagging feeling that she was gonna mess up, that she wasn't gonna be good enough. The first shrill notes cut through the air like a butter knife, but her playing became more melodic with every passing minute, and the sound was more like mist, soft and forgiving.
Ada set he flute down for a minute, catching her breath. Then she heard another sound rising over the snow, it started out low, then started to grow...
"My phone has no signal
It's makin' my skin crawl
The silence is so loud
The lights spark and flicker
With monsters much bigger
Than I can control now
Welcome to the panic room
Where all your darkest fears are gonna
Come for you, come for you
Welcome to the panic room
You'll know I wasn't joking
When you see them too, see them too"
Suddenly, Ada had the urge to play a somewhat, different tune... The flute practically played it's self. Her thin, nimble fingers knew exactly were to go, what note's to play. She has never played with anyone else before and she couldn't place the feeling...

Astrid finished the song with a lingering high note in the air. Her freckles stood out against her face from the cold, wrapping her hands together and blowing in them to get some warmth in them, maybe she shouldn't have worn fingerless gloves. She blinked in confusion at a distant sound at the lake tilting her head as she listened to the faint sound of an instrument.
She silently crept along the Great Lake for a moment before stopping, seeing a girl, maybe around Astrid's age, with short black hair, dyed red at the tips. She stood and listened for a moment before stepping forward, her red hair catching snowflakes that fell gently from the air. Her different colored eyes surveyed the girl with curiosity, had she been playing to the song she was singing? She played that instrument pretty well, she cleared her throat softly, rubbing her hands together before shoving them in her jacket pockets.
"Hi, what's your name?" Astrid asked curiously, biting her lower lip in thought before adding "You play that stick pretty well, what's it called? Or can I just keep calling it a stick?" Astrid adjusted her cap, pulling it lower over her eyes as she surveyed the girl.

| xxx | A stick? Ada’s pale eyes flashed, though her voice stayed level. “I’m Ada,” she said, crisply, “and it’s called a
flute.
” She put just enough emphasis on the word to make the correction in her tone, unavoidable. If this was the girl who’d been singing, her appearance didn’t match her voice. She had long red hair tucked untidily beneath a camouflage-patterned cap, as though it had given up resisting. She wasn’t wearing much despite the cold; worn jeans, a sweater or two layered under a red plaid jacket, and scuffed and dirtied Converse. Black fingerless gloves were on her hands, her exposed fingers reddened from the cold. Ada, in contrast, was dressed at least slightly better for the weather. A light black coat with a fur-rimmed hood hung neatly over faded jeans and sturdy boots. Her hair was wild as ever, despite a thorough brushing that morning, no matter what she did, it refused to behave. She just had learnt to embrace her hair, and come to terms with it... mostly. She studied the girl for a moment longer, then spoke again. “So,” Ada said, tone cool but polite, “do you sing much?” Ada had never been much of a singer herself, but she appreciated the skill when others had it. | xxx |

Astrid smirked, eyeing the girl up and down.
"Anyway, you play the stick pretty good, though there are holes in the top or somethin'. Name's Astrid by the way," she said, shaking her hair from her face to reveal one gold eye and one blue eye, and sun kissed skin with a scattering of freckles across her nose and cheeks.
"Nah, I don't sing too often, just once in a while. D'you play the stick often? And how the hay do you play the stick if there are holes in top?" Astrid asked, raising her eyebrow and adjusting her cap before tucking her hands back into her flannel. The breeze blow a few strands of hair into her eyes again, she let out a light grumble and tucked the strands under her cap again, before looking at the girl again with her eyebrow raised again
"So Ada d'you do anything else besides play a stick with holes on the top of it and stalk people when their sitting around, or is that all you do, hmm?" Astrid asked, wiping her nose with the sleeve of her flannel, then pulling the hood up over her cap and hair before tucking her hands into the pockets of her worn out mens jeans.

| xxx | "Nah, I don't sing too often, just once in a while,” The girl replied adjusting her cap. “D'you play the stick often? And how the hay do you play the stick if there are holes in top?" It was a rather stupid question in Ada’s opinion. "Well, how do you suppose I'd play without the holes?" Ada retorted, though she wasn't sure if the girl even knew the answer to that. A pause. "So Ada d'you do anything else besides play a stick with holes on the top of it and stalk people when their sitting around, or is that all you do, hmm?" She raised an eyebrow. "Nope, that's just about all." Ada said, a smirk tugging at her lips. "What else do you do, other than sing with stalkers?" She asked, disassembling her flute and putting the intricately carved mettle parts back into their case with a 'clink'. She looked up at the girl and was mildly surprised to see two different colored eyes -one blue and one an orangeish of colors- that were previously hidden under the camo cap. Ada stood up, she was about a head shorter than the red-head, reaching only about her chin. "Whats your name?" Ada asked flatly, looking up at the girl, her pale green eyes met blue and gold. It was a bit late to ask but she did so anyway, she had for gotten what the girl had said, not that it mattered much to Ada. | xxx |

Astrid snorted as she looked down at the girl.
"I dunno, you could still blow through the holes on the end of the stick, but the holes on top just look like crap," Astrid said, tilting her head with a smirk. "But you do you, shortie. And I don't sing with stalkers, the stalker played the stick with me." Astrid looked down at her again, adjusting her cap against the wind.
Astrid leaned down slightly to hear the girl better as she dissasembled her stick, she smirked again as she asked a question
"You deaf shortie? I said my name's Astrid," she said, standing up straight again and eyeing the girl up and down. She cleared her throat lightly and raised her eyebrow.
"If you haven't guessed yet, I'm gonna call you shortie. Anywho, like I said, I don't sing with stalkers, the stalker played the hole filled stick with me, any words for that, shortie? she asked, kicking a pebble with her worn out sneakers. She loved annoying people, especially if they constantly dressed better than her, it was just so much fun, for her at least, who knows? Maybe she'd keep the boys away this way, that would be great.

| xxx | Ada didn’t answer. She just watched, measuring, waiting. Then she moved. Her boot shot up, sharp and controlled, striking with precision. The impact landed exactly where she intended. Her foot made contact with Astrids stomach, soft and unprepared. Perfect. Ada stepped closer, breathing steady, eyes unwavering. “Don’t call me that,” she said, voice low and clear, leaving no room for argument. It was a stupid thing to kick someone for, she knew, but she hated being pushed around. “You want to test me?” she added, voice sharper now. “Pick better words. Or better targets.” She lifted her flute case, fingering it idly, but her stance remained rigid, alert. The warning was simple: if she had to strike twice to prove herself, she would. Ada didn’t chase. She stayed firm, the calmness in her posture as absolute as the force behind her strike. Every motion carried intent. Every heartbeat was measured. She exhaled softly, letting the tension hang in the air like a drawn blade. No nonsense would be tolerated, no challenges taken lightly. Ada remained where she was, steady and unyielding. Strength wasn’t just in her kick—it was in her control, in the certainty of her presence, in the fact mocking her, came with consequences. She adjusted her grip on the flute case, ready for whatever came next, and waited. | xxx |

Mention: @Ada Hawkins Word Count: 214 Action: kicking Ada
Astrid winced as the girl kicked her in the stomach, narrowing her eyes.
"Woah, shortie, don't start swinging your stick at me too, you may be able to throw a kick, but I can too," Astrid said, rolling her eyes. "Maybe you need to not be so sensitive, aye? Getting mad over a nickname that I'll keep calling you anyway?" Astrid snorted, rolling her eyes again and raising her eyebrow at the girl.
"So ya really are sensitive, kicking and all, maybe you'll cry? Over a stupid nickname too, honestly, I thought shorter girls were supposed to be nice, aye? Apparently more sensitive and kicky." Astrid raised her eyebrow and added, "Shortie." before she kicked Ada right back in the gut, feeling her foot connect with her jacket and hit her target, before dropping her foot again and glaring at Ada.
"You don't want to test me either, shorite. Alright?" Astrid snapped, stepping back and putting her hands back into her jacket pocket and watching the girl for any more sudden movements, either kicking or punching, or maybe even biting. You never knew what someone else would do.

| xxx | Ada knew what was coming next, and she was ready for it. Astrid didn't surprised her. She was too loud, too obvious, all bark and poorly aimed bites. “So you really are sensitive,” Astrid drawled. “Kicking and all. Maybe you’ll cry? Over a stupid nickname, honestly. Thought shorter girls were meant to be nice.” She raised an eyebrow, and added smugly; “Shortie.” The kick came fast. Connecting with Ada's stomach. Ada shifted at the last second and Pushed back on her foot, with her shoulder, forcing Astrid off balance. The hit hadn't hurt much, more like poorly aimed phaser shot, set to 'stun'. “You don’t want to test me either,” Astrid snapped, stepping back. Her hands were shoved into her jacket pockets. “Alright?” she added, again raising an eyebrow. She tried so hard to look intimidating, and was ailing in every way possible, that Ada actually felt bad for her, just for a moment. “You try too hard,” Ada said. "You don't scare me Tough Girl, or anyone else. she paused, the next words, she said with care. “Come on,” she continued, her voice flat. “I'm no expert in looking intimidating" she said, gesturing to her shortness, "but I can teach you how to land a good kick. What'd ya say...” she offered. She didn't want to continue this fight, not because she couldn't handle it, 'cuz she definitely could, but because it wasn't worth it. Like Astrid had said: 'and over a stupid nickname to.' this wasn't the time or the place to get her first detention. | xxx |
