We Met at Breakfast

"Yum!" Rosalyn said to herself, eating some of her cereal. She was pretty hungry, and new that she had a pretty big assignment due in class that day, and she needed the extra energy from the food.

She was so far finding the Hogwarts classes relatively easy, but her hardest subject was probably Transfiguration. She was figuring it out though, slowly but surely/

She heard the chatter of normal morning chaos all around her, the Slytherin table filled with snobs and chaos agents alike. She enjoyed listening to the conversations around her on days like that day, when she didn't much feel like talking.

After she finished her breakfast, she straightened up her robe from sitting down on the bench and stood to leave for class, as she did not want to be late, especially considering how often she got lost and needed those extra few minutes to make sure she wasn't late as well as lost.

She began to walk towards the door, getting stopped by a few groups of chattering students that were walking rather slowly. She overheard some interesting conversations, which made the wait quite worth it.

"Oh, excuse me." she said to one girl who she accidentally bumped into when she had almost reached the door. She hadn't meant to, but she was a rather clumsy person.

This year, Hogwarts seemed so much more chaotic, something that was slowly, but surely stressing me out, which was not helped by when I got down for breakfast, there was a massive crowd by the door.
I spent a few minutes quietly asking people if they could move, but they obviously didn’t hear, probably because I was so quiet. Eventually, I managed to slip through the crowds, only stepping on a few people’s feet.
I sat down at the very end of the Ravenclaw table, and quickly ate a slice of buttered toast, before standing back up, and walking back towards the massive crowds.
I was trying to find a space to slip back through the crowds, when I was crashed into from behind.
I spun round, and saw a slightly younger-looking girl, with long curly sandy blonde hair.
“Oh, excuse me” She said, when I turned round.
I took a deep breath, before replying, “It’s fine. I wasn’t looking where I was going.”
I thought for a few seconds, wondering if I’d ever seen her before – I realised that she had been sitting at the Slytherin table when I walked in.
“What’s your name? I’m Mirada – Second year Ravenclaw.”

"Oh, it's nice to meet you, Mirada! That name is really pretty, I love it. I'm Rosalyn, but that's too formal, so you can call me Rosie. I'm a first year, a Slytherin, as you can probably tell by the robes." Rosalyn said, gesturing to the black with green school uniform she was wearing, very house specific.

"And you're all good, I think that one was my fault, I truly was not paying attention." she said, refusing to let the other girl take the blame for the incident. She was just glad that nobody had gotten hurt, because that would not have been good.

"Sorry again, I'll definitely be more careful next time." Rosalyn said, with the full intention of ending the conversation there and leaving, but the crowd was still being quite slow to move, and the both of them were still stuck behind everyone else.

"Well, Mirada, what class are you heading to? I'm going to Transfiguration, and I'm a bit nervous, it's not my best class, that's for sure." she asked, curious to know, and trying to fill the awkward space of silence with them waiting to be let through the crowd. And it was true, she found Transfiguration quite difficult compared to some of her other classes. The Professor was great, though, which made it much more tolerable than it could have been.

My main thought as Rosalyn - Rosie - started talking was about how unfair it was that almost everyone I met was really talkative and confident, while I was extremely shy. Oh well, that’s life.
“It’s fine, don’t worry. I also wasn’t really concentrating.”
We were about to go separate ways, when suddenly the crowd blocked us out again. I rolled my eyes slightly - people were so rude!
When she asked me about what class I was going to, I laughed a little bit, slightly nervously.
“I’ve got charms. It’s a good lesson, I just find them really chaotic and stressful.”
When she said about transfiguration, I smiled reassuringly at her.
“Transfiguration is fine, once you get used to it. The first few lessons are extremely physics based, which can be hard, but it gets a lot easier after that.”
Thankfully, I hadn’t found the physics based lessons too hard while I was in my first year, as my parents had made me do extra hard physics while I was at primary school, as they were teachers.
“So, what is your favourite subject? Mine’s history of magic, because it’s not too different to the history I did at my primary school - it was a non-magic school.”

Yeah, no wonder I’m not a huge fan of Transfiguration, I was always horrible at physics! My primary school made us do it; and I was always horrible with it. But, somehow, I was great at mathematics. Who even knows.” Rosalyn said, contemplating how that could be possible. Oh, well, it was fine. She was managing Transfiguration, no matter if it was her favorite or not.

My favorite class? Hmm, that’s probably got to be Potions. I enjoy baking, and it’s sort of similar, I guess? I don’t know, I just like it, and I’m pretty good at it, if I do say so myself.” she said, answering Mirada’s question.

History of Magic is pretty cool, but I find anything relating to history a bit boring. Not as bad as it could be, though.” she said, remembering how she nearly fell asleep in the last lesson she had, but she managed to stay awake the whole time, luckily.

Do you do any hobbies? I really enjoy crafting, what about you?” she asked, not feeling like going through the entire list of what she enjoyed to do. There were so many hobbies she had, and she enjoyed all of them, but crafting was the best way to sum it all up.

When Rosie asked what hobbies I did, I smiled, and said, "I really love doing sports, which is surprising, considering how much of a bookworm I am. I also play violin, but mostly just for fun. I mean, I do exams and stuff, but I don't want to do it professionally."
I paused for a second, before asking, "What sort of crafts, mostly? I do a little bit of sewing, and a few other bits and pieces."
The people ahead of us were so rude! I kept on trying to break through the crowds, but kept on getting shoved backwards, unintentionally, making me sigh.
Finally, the crowd of people split into two, so I started to shove through, but turned back, and saw that Rosie hadn't seen yet, so I went back, lightly grabbed her wrist, and gently pulled her through the small gap.
When we got to the other side, I turned round to her, let go of her wrist, and said:
"Sorry about that. I didn't want you to get stuck on the other side. I didn't hurt you, did I?"
I stood, waiting for her to reply, feeling extremely guilty - my parents had always said that I didn't know my own strength. However, I had only grabbed onto her lightly, so she would hopefully be fine.

"You're a bookworm? Well, I guess I should have assumed that, with you being a Ravenclaw and everything, but still. I am too, so it's good to meet someone else that is!" she said, happy to know that she and Mirada shared an interest like that.

"Sports are pretty cool too! I like to play volleyball sometimes, but it really depends on what season it is. When it's too hot or too cold, it's just not fun." she said.

"Violin is so cool! I can't play any instruments very well. I took piano lessons for a couple years, but I'm not the best at it." she said, remembering how her clumsiness always got in the way of her hand-eye coordination too.

"Oh! You're good, you didn't hurt me! Thanks for the help!" she said, grateful that Mirada hadn't just left her on the other side of the crowd. That would have been a bad way to cut their conversation short.

"It looks like the crowd is parting a bit, finally! I should probably get to class, but I hope I can see you around, Mirada!" she said, sad that she had to leave for class, but happy that she had met someone new.
