The game has started. Rose and Timothy were now playing chess.

He let her played first which could be perceived as an advantage - actually it was- but Rose didn't want to show her weakness as being bad at playing chess. After her move Rose looked at Timothy who seemed surprised of her first move. Well he could be. Some people may play bolder at first. Rose had warned her friend it was not going to be an entertaining game.

It was Timothy's turn. She carefully watched him play as she was thinking about what she should play next. He moved his king's pawn to the center of the board. She frowned trying to recall her limited knowledge to adopt the best strategy in response to Timothy's move.

Rose glanced at Timothy who was looking now back at her waiting for her move as he started talking again. To be fair Rose didn't know if he were talking to distract her from the game or because he just really wanted to talk to her. Her frown narrowed as she tried to think of her next move. Nevertheless she would answer him after her second move.

Usually Rose was a multitasking person but while playing chess this ability didn't exist anymore. All of her concentration needed to be on the game. She was worried her friend would think she had lied or pretended to know about chess more than she actually was. Rose remained calm it was just a game nothing much to worry about that wouldn't change anything about their friendship.

After some times of reflection her thin fingers caught her Knight to move it to f3. Although she moved her knight assuredly inside she was not feeling as confident as she wanted to appear.

"Intimidating? Perhaps it is only the first impression. But I'm glad she gave you a book for you to enrich your knowledge on Ancient Runes. What is the book about? Rune charms?" she said while still looking at the board reflecting on her move.

It was played already. She could no longer change anything anymore. Her green light eyes then looked up at Timothy.

"Why rune charms?" she curiously asked.

Maybe it was a bit silly to ask this and the answer might be obvious but Rose had no idea at all about Ancient Runes she was just asking out of curiosity and to better know what was interesting Timothy. In a way.

Timothy was about to pick up his knight when he realised that he wasn't at the chess club of his muggle primary school any more.

"Knight C Six" He said, quietly. The black knight sprung to life immediately, leaping over the row of pawns to land on the requested square.

He then looked away from the board and began digging through his satchel, drawing out his book. 'A Guide to Direct Translations: The Elder Futhark'
"it's got passages in it that slowly get more and more complex to practice translating and reading Elder Futhark. Professor Odera said that once I am familiar with this she'll also get me a book on the Younger Futhark, or Gothic Runes"

He smiled as he showed off his prize, before moving on to her second question.

"So all the runes have multiple possible meanings. And I was trying to work out how you stop a rune charm from using the wrong meaning of the rune and make it mean what you want it to. Professor Odera explained that it's because the witch or wizard creating the bindruna kind of imbues it with intention too."

Timothy paused, not wanting to distract Rose from the game, he had spotted the little frown of concentration and was glad that she wasn't letting herself give up despite he lack of confidence. He was hopeful that this might be a fun afternoon.

Rose watched Timothy played. He too moved his knight. Rose narrowed her eyes as she frowned her eyebrows. Before deciding on which chess pawn to move next she listened to Timothy about Ancient Runes.

"Excuse my ignorance about Ancient Runes but what is Elder Futhark and Younger? Is it a kind of runes?"

Timothy had taken out of his satchel the book he was talking about. At the view of the book and the look on his face she couldn't help but smiled at it. He seemed to be really content to have this book. Rose was glad he could have found some interesting Ancient Runes books elsewhere if not in the library. Ironically they first came here for him to find books on Ancient Runes and her on Astronomy yet they were finding themselves to play chess.

As he explained about runes answering Rose's second question she carefully listened while nodding time to time to Timothy's words. However something caught her interest as she was a bit confused.

"What do you mean stopping it from using the wrong meaning? Isn't a runes supposed to do what is it meant to?"

Rose hoped not to appear as someone dumb who has no knowledge at all. Yet it was true she didn't know anything about Ancient Runes and if her friend could enlighten her she was not going to say no. Actually she was glad to know more about Timothy's interest and passion.

"Mmh...what is...bindruna?" she asked not very confident hoping it is not something she would be supposed to know or to have heard of.

She then focused her attention back to the game as she was going to make her move. Odd enough she didn't think much as she knew what to play. Perhaps because she had thought about it before.

"Pawn to D4." she quietly said as the pawn move one square forward. She was slightly frowning as her light green eyes got back on Timothy waiting for his next move.
