Not Exactly Fantastic Beasts PV Alan Finished

George examined the owl, stroking his fingers along his chin to give the appearance of deep thought. An important decision like someone's name felt like it should be more than a snap judgement at first sight, he felt. His eyes wandered back to his dad, giving him a suspicious glance that prompted a smile from the messy-haired man that was waiting by the counter and chatting to the shop clerk. How much thought could have gone into a name like "George"? Why couldn't he have been Amadeo Peppersmith the Third or something? Something with meaning behind it, maybe. More meaning than George.

"You don't need an address for an owl? Hm. Sounds like magic to me!" George said, with a beaming grin on his face. The novelty of it never wore off. It seemed like there were endless layers to the magical world, each one more fantastical than the last. How could anyone ever want to leave? He could hardly wait to get back to Hogwarts. While it had been nice to see his family again and get some gifts, he missed having breakfast with Jake and hearing all about the latest beast he'd read about. "You just looked and knew?"

George looked and looked, but he still didn't know. The owl twisted his head to change his perspective as he stared down at the young Hufflepuff. The animal was getting impatient, George sensed. Perhaps it was time to utilize Alan's technique. The boy looked at the owl and thought hard no what it ought to be named, scanning the regal features of the creature. An intelligent name. A beautiful name. Something simple, but refined.

"Cadmus!" George announced. Like a charm. "That's a good name, isn't it Cadmus?"

George seemed to think so. The newly christened Cadmus didn't seem fussed one way or the other. The owl did seem to perk up as it realized that things were changing, letting out an alarmed hoot as the young Hufflepuff picked up the cage and slid it off of the hook from which it was hanging. He held his head back, careful not to let his nose or fingers into biting distance as the feisty owl settled into the new scenario.

The kind old lady staffing the shop ran over with George's father in tow, and the two of them quickly plucked up the cage and took it to the counter. George's father seemed to understand that this was the animal he'd picked, and he started counting off galleons as the lady told him the price. George planted his hands on his hips, letting out a satisfied sigh. A purchase well done. By now, he'd forgotten that it was a pygmy puff that he came in for. He'd come out with two new friends.

"Thanks, Alan!" he said, looking to the Gryffindor with a big smile on his face. He was bouncing in place a little, standing high on the toe of his worn-down sneakers. "He'll come and visit you soon! Or her, I guess. I didn't check. I've got to go when my dad's done - we still have more shopping to do."

Alan nodded lightly, but the idiom 'sounds like magic to me', was something he was not familiar with, so he assumed that it was an actual thought the boy was questioning and nodded, "It i-is magic! But I a-agree it is incredible to think about!", he said, grinning slightly. He was pretty sure that there was a magical factor about the owls they used to carry the letters and that some owls were better suited to carry owls than others, making Alan wonder what it was that made those owls so different from the ones the Muggles knew. Or maybe they were the same, but that the owls somehow sensed magic in a person and therefore knew how to act around either muggle or wizard and witch...

Alan smiled lightly, when the other boy found a name for his new owl and nodded in approval, "Th-that is a good name!", he agreed with the younger boy, happy that the boy had been able to make his own decision after all. "I w-will look forward to receiving your letters then, G-George!", he announced and somehow was oddly pleased with how the encounter between the two went. He waited until the boy had left together with his father, waving the Hufflepuff as a form to say his good-bye, before he turned around to finish his own purchases that he had abandoned to help the other kid.

Taking a look around, he found Tiger who was annoying one of the cats that was in a cage, so he called his pet over so that he could pay for the food and some toys. It looked like the cat was struggling with obedience for a moment, before Tiger decided to follow him and tired to get the Gryffindor's attention by pawing at his legs. Once Alan had paid for his stuff and received a bag, he picked up Tiger and placed the young cat into the tummy pocket of his hoodie, grinning slightly at the image; this had been so much easier when Tiger was but a kitten, but the cat did not seem to mind at all even in his bigger form, seemingly relaxing and calming down to take a nap. Soon enough Alan was done with his chores and left to find his way back home.
