At Dan's retort, the first year rose a brow before responding with a mirthless laugh. "I think you heard my words but you weren't listening, so let me try to reiterate slower in a way that you can understand," Jack told the brunet. "Cowardice is what other houses call it - houses stupid enough to confuse foolishness for bravery. We know the trait as 'self-preservation'. Or at least I thought every Slytherin worth his salt would know. Especially a second-year.
"Self-preservation and selfishness is how we get ahead. Why would you expect him to risk his life for you when you probably wouldn't have done the same? When it gets down to it, it's every snake for themselves. Even Erik tried to keep the door shut in the name of his own self-interest - he just happened to also be helping out the rest of us. And look how that turned out for him. Didn't see you rushing to his aid."
Hazel eyes narrowed and the grip on his wand tightened. "Self-preservation is cunning because at least if you survive, you can live to see another day. It's better to be scared than to be dead. What's the point of everyone staying together, suffering together, and potentially all being wiped out together when it makes so much more sense for the smart to live on and the dense to perish? It's just natural selection.
"The mentally superior shouldn't have to risk themselves in order to save those beneath them. If Victor was intelligent enough to run instead of waiting around for dolts like you to process what was happening, why should he be punished for it? What, did you expect him to play the brainless, overconfident hero and try to save the whole Slytherin house just to fail along with everyone else? It's your own fault for not keeping up."
Though another two students soon entered the bathroom, Dan still seemed to present the most pressing threat to their investigation just then, so the redhead followed suit in ignoring the girls for the most part. Instead, he focused his attention on the oldest student in the room. "For someone who supposedly values cunning, you're not showing an ounce of it," the Welsh boy haughtily informed his upperclassman. "Using names, profanity, and threats isn't going to make Victor any more willing to talk. I would have thought a Slytherin, let alone a second-year one, would know better than to resort to intimidation tactics like an insecure bully who needs to prove to himself that he's more powerful than someone else in order to make himself feel better. You don't need a wand out to chat. If you have no intention of hurting him, put it away and stand by the door."
Jack couldn't figure out for the life of him how such a reckless, emotionally-impaired, illogical Slytherin could have possibly made Slytherin Quidditch Team Captain. Then again, Jack didn't know why anyone would have created such a life-threatening sport in the first place with monster balls that homed in on people, either, so maybe his strange, primitive trait of aggression made Dan useful for that.
However, this wasn't Quidditch. And the redhead was certain that if the Quidditch player didn't back down at least a little, they were going to lose whatever game was being played. The situation called for strategy and tact; not bull-headed displays of power, terrorization, and overall harassment of fellow students - particularly housemates.
As someone against such methods, Jack desperately hoped not to have to resort to using magic in order to neutralize Dan as a threat. He persisted instead with his favored choice of weapons - logic and reason.
"No one said the older or more knowledgeable of us had any responsibility or duty to protect the younger or more ignorant," he tried to point out to Dan once more. "You can't fault Victor for that. Everyone was afraid, some more than others, and some with very good reason. Shymane was on the floor crying and she was both a prefect and a second-year. Sure, maybe she didn't run, but did it occur to you she might have if she had been able? Perhaps it was only fear that kept her there in the common room with the rest of us." He scowled irritably, getting tired of having to spell everything out for an older student who, in Jack's opinion, should have already considered all of this.
"Victor has nothing to 'fess up' to; he acted as any of us would or should have if we hadn't been so caught off-guard. He just caught on quicker to what was happening. Contrary to your belief, an innocent man most certainly would have run for cover had he the sense, ability, and presence of mind to do so, because regardless of whatever he'd heard or known, those spiders didn't seem to care who they went after. If Victor knew anything more than the rest of us, why would he have bothered mentioning he heard anything from beyond the door at all? He could have simply opened it without a word and none of us would have been the wiser as he let in as many of those cursed arachnids as he pleased."
By this time, Jack had grown quite pale. Normally, even such long durations of talk didn't wind him, but each passing minute seemed to become more difficult. Not only did he appear to have trouble concealing some pain, but his energy seemed to rapidly be dwindling. He leaned himself against one of the sinks as he continued to speak, his wand still out and pointed at Dan.
"Victor's body temperature was freezing when I touched him after he first heard the banging at the door. He was also incredibly light when I pulled him away from it. Who's to say he wasn't at a higher risk of danger than the rest of us when those spiders came through? I still don't see any reason he should be persecuted for simply attempting to flee to safety, especially with an irrational, hot-headed, assumption-making accuser like you nipping at his heels."
Without moving his weary eyes from the oldest Slytherin boy, Jack at last attempted to address the main subject of the conversation.
"Victor," he began, still unsure of the fellow's last name, "I know I was suspicious of you and your friend, Marion, at first; but the more I think about it, the less likely you seem to be at fault here. I'm sorry for drawing unnecessary suspicion toward you before, especially while everyone was on edge. I wasn't thinking straight while tensions were high. That was unfair of me." Jack gave a small sigh, looking to the floor a moment.
"That said...I really hope you'll trust us with what you know. The more information we manage to gather collectively, the easier this mystery will be to figure out."

@Kara Capricorn, a late-comer to this interrogation. The owlery and the abandoned toilets were transpiring at different times. The note regarding Marion. The note regarding Victor. These incidents were not happening simultaneously. It was apparent that she was confusing out of character information such as this being a thread that is a reward for a house cup. [Please refer to the IC information, you would know that there was a note giving up his location which you can share with him but what you are sharing here is OC information that your character does not know. I am going to claim you are here but omit the spoken word, just add what you want to say in your next post in this thread.]
@Dan Palmer was aggressive, wand pointed towards Victor. The boy was nervous, sweating. His mind was racing through the possibilities, what was going to happen to him he felt was inevitable. Was there anything he could say the would make the irate snake back down? He said he wanted answers, but his complaints were not on what he might have known or shared but rather his inaction. His cowardice.
Victor was not a brave young man.
"I-I don't know anything," he stammered. "But if-if," he repeated the word. "This is a-a ass kicking," he exhaled. "I'dmovequick," he said that as one word. "I-If you think I would have made a difference," he pointed out. His words were full of fear, it was not a brave statement but it was a threat. The boy however was out for blood, not answers.
@Jack Burnett was verbally defending him. He seemed to understand a lot for a first year. He knew more than Victor did. When Jack mentioned how he felt cold or abnormally light, Victor's face would not change but his eyes would appear confused. "I don't know what you're talking about..." he had to mentally search for the redhead's name "Jack." His voice was still shaking, his skin pale, he was sweating.
Out of the corner of his eye, he would notice something wrong with Jack Burnett. How he was hesitating and bracing, his expressions as he moved. "There is something wrong," Victor announced. "With him," his head barely moved, he was scared stiff but it nodded ever so slightly in Jack's direction. was it a ruse to distract them so that he could flee? Did the young man have some extrasensory intuition that screamed to him that
Tyrrani Whitethorn and Elena Jones had visions that night, the night of the spider attack. This time @Opeila Seilun would have one. It would be like she got kicked in the gut, she would feel short of breath. This sharp pain in the middle of her chest, as if the air as too thin and she could not get a full breath. Her vision hazy, the edges dark and as if the curtains were lowered over her vision everything would go dark. The air smelled of sulfur. She would feel like it was the dead of winter, it was so incredibly cold. And she would hear something -- a voice.
"Then a bargain is struck. The power to walk your own path, at the cost of everything."
"A contract between you and I. The power to feel, at the cost of your fortitude."
"A deal then. The capacity to dominate their mind, in exchange... your heart."
Belonged to women, all of the voices. Different women, each of them.
"Know bliss, hunger for more."
"She will love you... enough."
"I can bring her back, but it will cost you."

When Savannah entered and started to panic, Opeila wanted to sigh annoyed. Leave, little girl, she wanted to say, You haven't been there. You don't get this. What she said, was "Hey, calm down and stay out of this." Her voice wasn't nice or patient. Opeila didn't even really looked at her. She had also pulled out her wand, but it was hidden by her sleeve for now.
Victor in the meanwhile claimed that he didn't know anything. "Don't believe that, Victor." Her voice would be a little more gentle now. She wanted to convince the boy to tell her, not scare him off.
And then a familiar face entered. Oh no, Opeila thought, why her? Kara Capricorn, the girl that Opeila was slowly convinced, that she was sorted into the wrong house. Hufflepuff would have fit the girl. She was naïve and shy and goodhearted, and Opeila wasn't sure if she was intelligent at all, given her last meetings. Something told her, that another thoughtless Capricorn action would be a bad thing here.
"Kara, stay there.", Opeila said serious. Why were those two girls here? They had nothing to do with this. They had been sleeping peacefully while the fight had been going on in the common room. Or they had been to cowardly to join, either way, they were not useful at all in here.
"Ugh, can't anyone hide that damn note?", she asked, when Kara brought it up.
Alright, alright. "Can you look if someone is coming and warn us then? We got this."
She looked at the two girls.
If anyone here was going to explode, she didn't want them in the middle.
Talking off... Dan seemed to be done explaining Slytherin's valued traits to Jack and now pointed his wand at Victor. Opeila pointed hers at Dan. "Man, what is your problem? Take it down. You won't hurt him at all."
Jack explained to Dan what he thought about Victor's actions, something that Opeila believed as well.
Once more Victor said that he didn't know anything and then pointed ot that there was something wrong with Jack. Opeila looked at him from the cornere of her eyes. Yeah. Jack didn't look too good, that concernerd her as well.
It was then when it came, out of nowhere. She felt like she was kicked into her guts, pressing the air out of her lungs and making her legs buckle. She would gasp and fall on her knees, her wand fell on the ground.
She couldn't breathe. She couldn't breathe. Why was it so cold? The first year was shaking a little.
There were voices in her head voices, that belonged to different women. Opeila would look up without actually seeing anything, suddenly fully aware of what was happening. And she just repeated the words that she heard.
"Then a bargain is struck. The power to walk your own path, at the cost of everything."

As Victor's mouth moved, she noticed Opeila now shivering. She wondered, could Victor speak, but direct it to only one person. Kara didn't care about that for now. The only thing she cared about right now was Opeila.@Opeila Seilun @Victor Moore
She made sure her hand was close to her wand as she neared Opeila.
"Opeila? Are you ok?" She said, keeping her voice steady.
Kara watched her knees buckle under her and she fell, her wand rolling away from her. Kara grabbed it and ran over to Opeila. She seemed to be mumbling something.
"Then a bargain is struck. The power to walk your own path, at the cost of everything."
"A contract between you and I. The power to feel..."
As Opeila continued, Kara herself drifted off and tried to figure out what was happening and how to fix this problem.
She glared at Victor for a while, thinking he was to blame, but she calmed herself before she became to reckless.
She turned back to Opeila and then did the only thing she could think of. Kara knew Opeila was probably going to be pretty mad at her.
"This is all I got," She told herself "I don't give shit no more."
She slapped Opeila as hard as she could and said,
"Snap out of it, Opeila!"

The uncontrollable arguments amused Percy as he stood there with his arms crossed, his head going back and forth between the two students. Dan was more of the aggressor compared to Jack, who was trying to stick up for poor Victor. He was annoyed to say it but Jack was right, going full aggressive to someone such as Victor was going to get them no where. Maybe it was better to start off slow and apply more pressure as time went on. His eyes peeled away from the arguments and looked over to Victor, a boy that was clearly out of his comfort zone, which in this case was perfect. Suddenly, things would soon start to pick up.
A slytherin girl not far from him slowly crumbled to her knees, knees buckiling as if the weight of her own body was too much. From where he was standing, he could hear her mumbling sentences that sounded like riddles, or even better, gibberish. However, this situation may be useful in getting some information out of Victor who would sure be mentally on a cliff edge from the situation in front of him. Percy looked back over to Victor and slowly made his way over to him, both hands firmly placed into his pockets as he came to stop, his eyes locked to his face "Victor, the sooner you give us this information the faster this strange shit stops happening." he said coldly before shifting his head to the right, a finger pointing towards the girl on the floor "That is not normal for a slytherin student to be acting, unless she's secretly insane" Percy said as he raised his finger and pointed at another individual, Jack Burnett "And that kid has been acting and looking like a walking corpse ever since he walked in, so what do you say Victor, ready to stop their suffering?" he grunted over to him, his face still stone cold from before. He wasn't sure if their health was to do with the happenings, but it was a pressure point to use in the hopes of getting something out of him.

Things were going better, only mildly in comparison to the Owlery. While our dramatic reunions with our housemates were not going on at the same time, my ability to communicate with her these past few weeks had been limited. The intermediary for them, while reliable was limited in his own ways I could suppose. I felt apprehensive, surrounded by my peers. @Dan Palmer looked like he wanted to wear my innards as a crown. @Percival Grey simply looked intimidating, from his words to his stance. Then there was @Jack Burnett, there was something about him I did not want to trust. He seemed to clever. He talked a lot, but his words seemed to have a purpose. there was no flying by the seat of his pants even if the guy was a bit younger than me, I feared that he might be a bit smarter than me. I felt like I was walking into the jaws of a bear trap by even looking at him. Still, he was one of the few that did not seem to urge violence and that was something to latch onto.
Jack was urging him to share what I knew. I knew a lot of things, but none of them I felt relevant to this madness. None of them even if they were somehow linked, I would be willing to share. I could make something up, a white lie. But had I known a white lie that I could share that would cause them to back away I would have said it already. I tried to swallow, my throat felt dry.
"The spiders--" my voice halting as a girl fell to her knees, babbling something about deals. I heard bits of it of course, some of it seemed wrong. Some of it seemed... I shook my head. I wanted to back away, not that I had any place to go. The wall was already hugging my back, the cold chill of the stone walls stole the heat from my body. "Y-you," my eyes wide and my voice shaking even moreso than before. "Already know... why are you even asking me."
For whatever reason Kara Capricorn decided to slap the babbling girl. I grimaced for her, the sharp and sudden noise of flesh striking flesh made this terrible noise. The frig girl, I mouthed.
My attention drawn away from the girls by Percival. There was something about his stance that unsettled me. How he carried himself. This implied threat with his presence. He pointed down at the girl.
"Victor, the sooner you give us this information the faster this strange shit stops happening."
"What information," I retorted. "I don't know anything," I lied. Well, it was only a partial truth, I had presumptions and assumptions, I had theories and I had paranoid fantasies but they were nothing more than that.
"That is not normal for a slytherin student to be acting, unless she's secretly insane"
He was referring to the spastic girl that was just slapped by her classmate. "I didn't do anything to her," I claimed defensively. I hadn't, if anything she was doing something to me. "Maybe she is nuts," I offered. I had no idea what she was doing, that what she had was some sort of vision or what a vision even meant. Sure, I went to Divination Class like any other lad, stare at a crystal ball - tragedy and true love, nothing mundane and you get an A. That was how it was done. or at least how I assumed it was.
"And that kid has been acting and looking like a walking corpse ever since he walked in, so what do you say Victor, ready to stop their suffering?"
He referenced Jack, the guy with a perpetual ulterior motive. I had no idea what was wrong with Jack. He pissed off the wrong guy. Someone bigger than him? Someone smarter than him? Was this all a ruse, a trick to get something out of me? I did not want to hurt anybody, but they did not seem scared. They did not seem like the victims here.
"Look," I went on. "I did not hurt anyone. I am just trying to keep out of everyone's way, avoid the drama and the bullshit," I claimed with my hands slightly raised and facing forward. "If I knew that there was something dangerous on the other side of that door, I would not have tried to open it. Not that I even opened it, we went back to bed," I reminded them. "It sounded like someone was desperately trying to get in," my heart sank a bit but my eyes hardened. "And maybe someone was," a grim revelation I had never verbalized before. "I really don't know."
Jack was urging him to share what I knew. I knew a lot of things, but none of them I felt relevant to this madness. None of them even if they were somehow linked, I would be willing to share.

Not My First Pick
Stunned silence? Perhaps my truth had left them motionless and speechless. It felt as if five days had passed without a response. I looked between the interlopers briefly with an awkward gaze as I silently wondered if this was it. If this was my chance. My opportunity to escape while they are stunned. I would take a nervous sideways step as I attempted to keep some space for Jesus between myself and Dan.
"I..." my voice trailed off a bit. "I guess I will be heading... out?" There was a hopeful inflection to my voice. I was being blamed for everything, including issues I hardly understood like the swooning girl. Sure, I would have loved to have been told i had the power to make girls swoon but the babbling part was just weird. My face scrunched a bit as I attempted to strep around or perhaps even over Opeila. Some girl was busy assailing her anyways, so it was better if I just -- left.
Yes, I was trying to escape, it was somewhat doubtful I would succeed but it was possible that they had the attention span of a squirrel and had already mentally went for a jaunt and had forgotten that he was in the room with them. A boy could hope in any case.

Not My First Pick
Im so sorry. this thread completely passed under me radar.
Dan was racked with indecision. On the one hand, he wanted to beat Victor's lying face in until he spilled, but then he also wanted to introduce Jack's face to his foot for daring to badmouth Slytherin like he did. A house of cowards? And apparently forgetting what happens when you tread on a snake? And then having the gall to lecture him? Nu-uh.
Having his rage divided between two gobshites allowed him to think a bit clearer. Sure, maybe Victor WAS scared. Well boo-@#$@%&*-hoo. Everyone was scared that night. But he took off and left before anything even happened. Then barricaded the door shut to keep anyone else from running if they wanted to. Were Dan a prefect, Victor would have detentions every day for a month for desertion of that magnitude. As a start.
Then Opeila started freaking out. Dan didn't know much about her, but he got the strangest feeling that, for some reason, she wouldn't invite him to her birthday party, despite him doing nothing to her. He couldn't place where that feeling came from or why, but he dismissed it as unimportant in the current moment. Plenty of time to be emotionally hurt if it happened.
Opeila did that creepy seer thing where she saw a vision, and spoke some random bullshit that would only make sense in context. Because things can never be simple.
Dan prepared to cast Spongify on the ground if she fell. Despite her pitiful attempt at threatening him moments before, he didn't want her breaking her head open on the floor. If it were Jack, Dan doubted he would care, but Pei was just misguided.
His focus was taken yet again, as Victor attempted to weasel away while Opeila was possibly having as Seer seizure.
Yeah...No.
Dan stepped directly in front of him, his eyes burning into Victor's.
"An' where do ye think YER goin'? 'Til this is sorted out, NO ONE'S leavin'. An' of ALL people, yer sure as hell not. I'm not gonna scour the whole of the damn castle lookin' fer yer desertin' arse, ye slimy little %@#. An' trust me lad, ye don' want me to hafta come lookin' fer ye again."
Dan needed a moment to wrap his head around everything. And Victor wasn't slipping away again.

Opeila indeed was speechless. "You baffle me.", she hissed at Kara, her deep anger hidden by even deeper disbelief.
She had concentrated on her vision, the voices that had spoken to her. The Slytherin tried to memorize everything so she could recall it later, write it down and analyse it.
Opeila had waited for more to come, possibly some sort of explanation, but then a real voice came through to her. A familiar one. And then a sharp pain made she snap back into reality, her head flew to the side, she could only just keep herself from falling over. Someone had slapped her hard. And who else could it be... Kara bloody Capricorn.
For about twenty seconds she had just stared at the girl, repressing the urge to slap her back or alternatively just curse her with every spell she knew.
How many times could this girl screw up until she learned sonething from it? Or at least realised that she had screwed up?
After the first sentence she had said to her, Opeila picked her wand up and got up from the floor. She wouldn't hold her cheek, that was red and still hurt from the slap. She looked right into Kara's eyes, pure antipathy in her own. "Do you even have a talent apart from appearing where you are not needed and then acting in the stupidest way, Capricorn? It is a riddle to me how you even made it into the house of the cunning." Her voice was calm, but you would rarely hear so much anger in it. "From now on, you better stay far away from me, or I can't promise anything. I suggest that you leave. There is nothing useful you can do here. You'd do more harm than good."
Her attention turned to Victor again. Kara had taken all her patience, she was done playing nice. She wouldn't threaten him, but she also was done talking to him like some traumatized kid. He didn't get bit.
"Victor, you stay right here.", she said, glad that Dan also stopped the third year.
"We're not done here yet."

@@Opeila Seilun
Opeila's eyes blazed like fire, and she was burning with anger.

From now on, you better stay far away from me, or I can't promise anything. I suggest that you leave. There is nothing useful you can do here. You'd do more harm than good."
That was it, Kara's last nerve, just got snapped in two.
"Listen here, Seilun, does it look like I try? Does it look like I try to hurt anyone. You looked like you were having a seizure, and if it had to do with magic or something, I don't have a clue about it! Right now, I'm happy that it looks like that hurt! I try everyday to even do something, try to be kind, why does everyone have to fit into steriotypes, huh? Just because I have a sliver of empathy doesn't mean I'm in the wrong house, and you know what, with you in Slytherin, I'd gladly leave! One thing people don't know about me is that sometimes, I can snap, and it's a hard thing to do, but you've done it! I try everyday to do something about my stupid mistakes, but it seems I'm just to dumb to do it! But enough about me, it's you, I cannot even believe that I hate someone, but you're up on top of my list now!" She growled, her eyes blazing, and her once silky voice now harsh and piercing.
She pulled out her wand, but kept it down, not pointing it at Opeila. She stormed out of the bathrooms, and promised herself she would never go near Opeila again.
