So sorry this is late! Hopefully it's worth the wait!
No. God no. Why... Just-- Why??
The same spluttering train of thought had been on repeat since Emily found out. It was impossible to imagine, even more so to believe. But it had happened, as much as she wouldn't want to believe it so.
She leaned back defeatedly in her chair, letting the newspaper slip out from her fingers and flutter back onto the desk. The article was released days ago but Emily spent an equal amount of time sulking over it.
The respected Marcus Iwasaki arrested over a werewolf-related accident. Emily couldn't quite bring herself to speak out loud what the werewolf-related incident inferred to. It was something that she feared Colin was at risk to - as were many others that had a unique condition like him - and certainly not something she would've expected from a former Head of House.
The Werewolf Night at Tesla Stone's estate had gone so well... Much better than Emily initially anticipated. It was Professor Iwasaki that inspired the idea behind it in the first place. He revealed himself so casually last year, about his werewolfery... He was top of the list - aside from Colin - who could prove that werewolves were benevolent souls. But now it seems his arrest had strained Emily and Tesla's efforts... People were bound to talk. Rumours, speculations and media posts travelled like wildfire in the Wizarding World. There was going to be pushback. Confusion. Heated debates, which was possibly the politest way to describe the wake of the news. And just when it seemed good progress had been made... No matter what the truth was, people were bound to use it to justify their hate. Emily couldn't bear to hear or see any of that.
Her textbooks and personal notes laid scattered across the table, decorated with post-it notes, bookmarks and sentences scribbled with circles and underlines. She'd been curious over lycanthropy when Colin spilt his secret to her. He even went to great lengths to find courage to show off his transformation to her. Bless his heart. But now Emily was worried that Iwasaki's sentencing would sully not only his reputation but those across the lycanthropic scale. That was when she took to her books. Always and forever her way of coping with distress.
Wolfsbane was the key to it all, she believed. If it kept the human mind during the monthly cycles, then it must play some part in altering the biology of the werewolf change. Her nose was buried in revision notes and cross-reference guides all day... But everything came to the same conclusion; routine maintenance, efficient safety protocols, monthly wolfsbane. Any or all three missing lead straight to spread lycanthropy, or worse.
She rested her head down along her folded arms on the table. She didn't want to picture anything like this happening to Colin. What if, hypothetically, he accidentally missed a dose? What would his family do? What would Colin do? Would he be arrested too? Even if he didn't hurt anyone?
Emily sighed again and tapped the table agitatedly with her nail. When she came back for her Third Year she didn't expect anything like this to happen.

Amidst Emily's internal head-banging against the metaphorical table over the issue she was now presented with, a voice fluttered into the room. Looking up, Emily spotted a student - not much older than her by the looks of it - appearing from the door and making her way towards her, with an all too recognisable "You good?" look etched onto her.
It took a hot second for Emily to rearrange her features into a more welcoming smile. "Ah-- Hello! she greeted, the pitch in her voice a little too high than what she was aiming for. "You're not interrupting anything! I was just..."
Emily's arms scrambled to gather up the little scraps of paper she had dusted the table with, all while keeping a sheepish eye on the older student. She swallowed nervously. "--Thinking."
Emily really didn't want to get into anything political or downcast. That said, Emily was a hair strand away from completely losing it over this Marcus Iwasaki nonsense.
And with a sharp exhale, the dam was broken.
"I mean can you believe this?" She held the newspaper up to the other student's eye level. "Like-- Just like that? No investigation, no--" She cut herself off with another disbelieving scoff.
"Maybe I'm acting naïve here, but I refuse to believe in any of this. Professor Iwasaki... He's a good man. He was so nice. He'd never-- It makes no--"
Emily cut herself off yet again with another exasperated sigh. She rather not surprise her new acquaintance with a rant - although she feared she had already gone and done that - and the issue at hand had already got her worked up to such a degree. She would prefer not to overdo it to the point where she would spread a dark cloud of her angry and bitter mood.
She rubbed the side of her temple as her eyes fell back onto the news article. "We all worked so hard on the Werewolf Night over the summer. It was a bigger success than I ever anticipated. But now that this has come out... I can't fathom how much more work needs to be done to ensure students like Professor Iwasaki aren't subjected to this level of hypocrisy. What next? Will our werewolf friends be arrested just by simply giving a friendly handshake to someone?"
Emily felt a nervous twitch in her gut as she imagined Colin being restrained for something as simple as smiling at her. Would the government treat that as him bearing his fangs at her? An excuse to claim it was an intimidation tactic? How much longer does that poor boy have to endure tiptoeing around society with his wolf-infused flamboyance? And he's not the only one. There was Tesla too. And many other students, older and younger than her, undoubtedly experiencing the same weight of tension, trying to navigate how to manage it without struggle.
"Ugh... This world just baffles me sometimes."
