Gringotts Wizarding Bank is the most formidable financial institution in the wizarding world. Gringotts was founded in 1474 by goblins, long before modern wizarding governments took shape. While wizards use the bank, goblins own and control it. This bank has survived goblin rebellions, wizard wars, dark lords and ministry corruption, it will survive you as well.
Gringotts stands at the northern end of Diagon Alley in London, the askew structure unmistakable even from a distance. The white marble façade of this bank towers over the crooked shops that surround it. Larger in size and standing in contrast to the alley's colorful chaos, where many shops glitter with magic, Gringotts glitters with wealth. Polished bronze doors reflect passersby like warped mirrors, and towering stone pillars frame the entrance like a temple to wealth and the boons of hoarding it like a dragon.
It is said that to enter Gringotts is to feel very small.
Immediately inside the doors of Gringotts is a vast marble hall, echoing with the scrape of quills, the clink of coins, and the murmured negotiations of witches and wizards with goblins. While goblins own no wands, their acumen with precious elements has given them a modicum of power and dignity in the wizarding world. The air smells faintly of metal, parchment, and old magic.
Behind long counters sit goblins and occasionally half-kin, their sharp eyes missing nothing. They wear tailored waistcoats and spectacles, their fingers quick and precise as they tally accounts or scrutinize documents. Many have a keen insight in how to make a deal favor them. Every visitor is watched: politely, coldly, thoroughly.
A famous inscription is carved into the stone near the entrance:
"Enter, stranger, but take heed
Of what awaits the sin of greed…"
It is not decoration. It is a warning. There are many forms of magic, and while the best known magic is the sort of magic taught in Hogwarts, there is a dark power that comes from sin such as greed.
Beyond the main hall of Gringotts lies the true depths of Gringotts: a vast underground labyrinth accessed by goblin-operated mine carts that plunge through twisting tunnels at terrifying speeds. These rails descend deep beneath London, branching endlessly toward personal vaults, high-security vaults, and the most heavily guarded chambers known to wizardkind.
Gringotts prides itself on a simple reputation: your money is safer here than anywhere else in the magical world. Security measures in Gringotts are numerous, redundant and brutal. Measures include: anti-apparition wards, thief’s downfall waterfalls that strip enchantments, dragon-guarded high-security vaults, blood-based vault recognition, and curses designed to maim, multiply, or kill intruders. While numerous criminals have tried, few have succeeded to take what did not belong to them from Gringotts.
