The last week had been one thing after another. Flash no longer knew who he was or what he was doing with his life, and was by all accounts defeated by the world caving in around him. Just like the insufferable sheep around him, he was taken in by the rushing current, being swept through classes and meaningless interactions without hardly noticing the passage of time. As often as possible he didn’t speak to anyone at all. All he could think to do was focus on classes. It was something tangible, unaffected by his mood or current events.

With that, he entered the Potions classroom in a stupor. His eyes glazed over, not bothering to keep his head up or pull back his shoulders as he walked. Around the edges of his vision was only darkness, he didn’t see anything but the space right in front of him. Jog, class, study, sleep. He contemplated the meaning of his pathetic existence, trying uselessly to push the feeling away from him. No one understood him, no one wanted to. All anyone wanted from him was what he could give them, it had always been that way.

How very lonely it was to be alive. Only a month ago he felt he had a purpose, as though his drive would see him through any obstacle. Instead he was rewarded with heartache and suffering. A price he would have been willing to pay, had it come hand in hand with anything desirable. He had power to a degree, but when he looked back on it, it hardly seemed worth the considerable strain he put on himself to achieve it. With his restless sleep and continued effort, he had little to no time to think about his next step. He, at the moment, was only just trying to survive the pain.

Because of that, he didn’t even realize that he sat next to a familiar face. He started setting up his station soullessly, as if his hands moved with the power of an unseen will not entirely his own.

Ross had been on edge for practically the entire week, but by now he had completely shoved the incident that was only days prior deep into the depths of his mind. The thought that perhaps the cruel Slytherin had possibly found out of the fact he had broken his side of the deal had haunted over his dreams for the past few days, making it a hassle to fall into a peaceful slumber each night; however, it seemed to get increasingly better and better as nothing began to happen to him each day coming. Perhaps he would finally get to go back to his typical, mundane life once more as he was forced to get O's in potions.

The boy felt he was finally off the hook. He had actively chosen a table alone in order to get the best experience he could out of potions. Today he felt confident in himself. At sunrise he had even bothered to tame his regularly unkempt hair down to where it looked like he was actively trying, in which for the first time in ages he felt like he could try and get tasks done with ease instead of excessively worrying about whether he messed up. The boy was flipping through his notes, rereading the recipe he had worked so hard to get extra ingredients for the week prior. He gave it a somewhat exhausted smile, realizing for once it all paid off. He still despised potions, but the extra work seemed to be paying off in his favor. It brought him a bliss he had not felt since he was back at home, having less than a care in a world.

All of these joyous thoughts were shattered with a baseball bat as Flash sat next to him.

Ross froze up as it hit him who was next to him. Did he know what Ross had done? What was he going to do with his diary? Was it already too late? His breaths were short as he waited for Flash to say something, or perhaps even stare at him.

But nothing came

As nothing happened, Ross looked over to the Slytherin, and the only adjective that could be used to describe him was defeated. He seemed to act completely different than he had almost a week prior. His cocky attitude seemed to have diminished, and if anything Ross could have sworn he did not known he did not even know the confused Hufflepuff sat next to him.

What could have hurt such a smug kid so horribly? Ross sincerely doubted he cared of anyone, after all. Why would he? He just got kicks out of using people from what he could tell. Ross remained perplexed. He was distrustful of Flash's attitude, and considered it may be a trap. Then again, it all just seemed so... pathetic. Ross knew actors, and Flash certainly seemed like one; however, this did not seem as if it was a facade Flash could put on. The only thing leading him in that direction was something Jack had said to him prior about Flash as a person, and this certainly did not fit Jack's details. An oddity at its finest.

Curiosity got the best of him, as he was now experienced with nothing ventured nothing gained. Ross tapped Flash on the shoulder.

"What's goin' on?" he investigated, determined to find out what Flash's deal was.

Flash’s tunnel vision was shattered in a moment on unexpected physical contact. As he was tapped on the shoulder, he jumped a bit, gasping. Wildly ‘out of character’ for him, with his power of perception usually being his greatest ally. Having his blinders on had led to more than one scare. He still couldn’t simply take them off, the world was being far too overwhelming.

The real shock, however, was the identity of the dastardly poker himself. Ross, the traitor. It was an ungenerous way for Flash to feel, but he had harbored unfair impressions of Ross since the very beginning. In the throes of his self-deprecation, Flash was able to admit to himself that while outwardly harmless-seeming, what he had done to Ross was childish of him. It didn’t actually serve a greater purpose, he had only ever wanted to make Ross pay for getting on his nerves.

A mistake. One he was still currently paying for, with no sign of ever recovering from. It seemed like a disproportionate punishment to him, but he knew the world wasn’t fair. If he had his guts still, he might have chastised Ross for speaking to him in class, despite specifically telling him not to. It hardly mattered anymore. Even though he seemed like a simple target, Ross had never actually been under his control. Ruling through fear had never been one of Flash’s strong suits, and the fact that he had gone crying to Willow was only proof of the fact that it was a subpar form of manipulation.

Not… that it mattered. Even when he used his preferred method, he hadn’t had the results he hoped for. He lost the relationship that mattered most to him, and without it he was questioning everything. The reason his relationship with Willow meant so much to him, the reason it had failed so horribly, was all because of him. It wasn’t Ross’ fault at all.

”Ross.” Flash acknowledged him, dead inside. ”My whole world is crashing down around me. How about you?”

The dead tone in the boy's voice caught Ross more off guard than it should have. Flash seemed to have a different tone for every facade he put on, but this seemed oddly familiar. It was the boy who told him to stop talking in the middle of class. It was the laughter he had heard in the trophy room. It was a rare glimpse of Flash that Ross had not gotten to witness as much as he would have liked.

This was Flash

This was not another persona. It was honesty that he had not seen before. As much as the boy despised Flash, something in his heart felt the slightest bit of pity. Not much, but enough to bring a ray of sunshine down into the area where he kept all the loathing in his heart.

A look of concern creeped onto the young boy's face, but it did not express much. Instead, it looked much more similar to curiosity. Perhaps if one was to mix raw pity with raw distaste in a cauldron, heated and then mixed 7 times, curiosity would be the outcome. It likely would not taste good, but it would certainly be worth a shot.

The little gasp also left Ross bewildered. It spoke more than words. This kid really was going through something, and Ross had no clue what it was. Well, he supposed he had a slight guess by the way Flash' normally piercing blue eyes looked at him. He was probably more angry at him than he was anything else, but yet that was not the emotion that radiated off him the most. He seemed hopeless if anything, and that left Ross uneasy. While he did have a knack with being able to read emotions, these seemed convoluted.

Ignoring the second half of the question, Ross decided to throw his shot, which is a shame as to take a shot one either needs to be at a bar or have a gun. Ross, lacking both of these, simply threw it instead.

"Er uh.." Ross began, knowing well it was his own fault. The tiniest bit of hope remained that perhaps it was not, and that Flash just had a really sucky day. "'ow come?" The boy inquired knowing well of the answer.

He supposed if he was going to mess up this bad, he may as well attempt to get another thing out of it.

"And erm,, what about my.. very important journal?"

What does he want… an autopsy report? Flash’s first instinct was to expect Ross to be gloating. Certainly he wanted a description of how well his revenge had played out. Wanted to drag Flash through the coals one more time for his own amusement.

But that was nowhere in his face. His face was straining, an expression that could only be described as… confused concern. Either way, he seemed uncomfortable, clearly not prideful. He seemed so endlessly jovial when he invaded Flash’s personal conversation, but somehow took no joy in pitching him off his high horse.

Why…? Why did Ross care? Flash’s thoughts started to flicker back to life, he considered the things he had read in Ross’ journal. Who was Ross… Curious, abstract, spontaneous... he considered the place where those rambling words came from, how he seemed so insistent in the face of so much push back. Driven, insolent, empathetic.

A clearer picture, at least. Once again he had fallen into the myth of truth, that the way one saw the world was all that there was to it. He leaned over to his things and grabbed the journal from it’s home for that last two weeks. He laid it gently in front of Ross, on his cleared off and organized work station.

”Here you go. It was useless anyway. You should have known it had nothing incriminating in it.” Flash sat his elbows on the desk so he could rest his chin on his folded hands. ”As for why… my best friend and I are no longer talking. I believe you’ve met her, her name is Willow.”

Flash’s eyes stared off into space, barely aware of all the people around him, or how he must have looked. He didn’t have the energy to care anymore.

”I miss her.”

As the boy pulled out the journal from his bag, Ross was completely astonished. He could hardly comprehend what had happened.

The same boy who had blackmailed him, harmed some boy, and among other questionable actions was an emotional mess and just had given back the only thing he could hold against Ross. The gentle placing of the leather book felt odd, as he expected some frustration or anger to come with being forced to give away ones sense of power. Instead, he had simply pitifully gave it over.

Ross' mouth was agape at the Slytherin for a moment, before he turned to the book. He eyed it suspiciously as if it was jinxed with bees, but found himself opening it anyways.

Property Of Ross Stephens

That was him. This was his book. His eyes lit up, before remembering he was next to the one who stole it. He was confounded why the boy would simply give it back. It was a thing of power, after all. He directed his attention towards the broken down Slytherin, and said something he had never exactly planned to say to someone who had attempted to bother him.

"Well er, thanks I s'ppose." He said to the Slytherin with no trace of sarcasm in sight.

He brushed his hand over the cover of the book, still unable to process having it back. As the boy spoke of Willow, chills ran down his spine.

That had to have been the girl he had talked to prior, and he became aware that the wolf's downfall was the sheep's fault. While Ross did not nod or show any sign he knew her in return of that statement, he doubted that Flash would have noticed either way. There was a lost gaze in his eyes that landed nowhere. It was unlike him.

He felt a pang of guilt in his heart when he heard those words.

I miss her

He supposed the boy probably knew of his antics. The things he had done to get him to fall off from that high pedestal he had stood on only days prior. He likely knew how little he cared if he got in trouble, and most certainly the fact he was the one who informed one of his closest friends that he was a traitor to those around him.

Well, Ross did not know he actually cared at the time.

"You cared for 'er a lot?" Is all the boy could get out, unable to process if he genuinely cared or if it was all some sick game of who gets power and who does not.

Ross’ voice piped up again, his confusion seeming to lean towards the side of curiosity, as it usually did with him. Now that he had heard Flash’s honest feelings, he had sensed the truth in his words. It was only because Ross was who he was that Flash could talk so candidly. He had seen all of the worst of Flash, yet still continued to ask after him, talk to him. Ross’ opinion of him seemed to be determined by something wholly secondary to his words. He would say it was pathos, but that usually required one to put effort into making an emotional case for oneself.

Even though class had started, Flash had hardly noticed. Even as he was, he couldn’t bring himself to cause a disturbance in the class. It wasn’t right to disturb others, the world didn’t revolve around him. His sister’s words echoed through his head like the sound of a horsewhip against a wooden table. Face forward, fixed posture… his mind started to drift into his memories like drifting into sleep, only to snap back to attention when his head fell through his hands.

This had been his worst day yet. He was starting to wonder how long before the teetering back and forth lead to a total capsize. He didn’t want it to happen at all, he kept fighting to stay alert, but his mind kept being drawn into the darkness. The constant struggle was exhausting. He had been jealous of Ross’ carefree approach to Potions-- only ever just getting by. It was that feeling too that he had always felt around Willow. Unburdened. How do I relieve a burden that I have to carry? He wondered if it wouldn’t simply continue to grow until it crushed him underneath it.

Then he remembered Opeila. When she started talking to him, telling him her insecurities without being pressed, like someone had to know them. How scared she had been that ‘knowing her’ would drive people away, it was an eerie reflection of himself. He had fought to keep everything to himself, to lock it inside so that no one could use it against him. He was told as much by Marius. Your insecurities are your enemies’ greatest weapon. Your feelings are exploitable. It was true after all, Flash used such things against people all the time.

But it wasn’t working. At least Ross was actually asking him. There was a chance Ross even cared about the answer.

”Yes. From the very first time we met I just wanted to talk to her forever. She’s so funny… and considerate.” Flash spoke quietly, vaguely looking at the professor as he talked. ”She’s so full of life and happiness. When I’m with her, I feel like a flower basking in the glow of the sun.”

Flash sat upright, a bit more sound of mind now that he was speaking. His eyes still lazily tracked the professor’s movement.

”The truth is I don’t deserve a friend like her. It was bound to fall apart when she wanted to know more about me. If you try to look inside, you won’t find anything. I have nothing to offer.” Flash felt like he was rambling, like his words meant nothing at all. His words weren’t structured, they had no goal. He was just saying whatever came to mind. Spontaneous. ”I’m nobody.”

Ross did not bother to be paying attention, as he had already gotten the notes ahead of time about a week ago. Instead, his ears and eyes were paying much more attention to Flash. Occasionally the boy would look down at his notes, double checking they were correct; however, mainly everything in his thought process was directed towards Flash.

Their words were the souls lost in Hades. They seemed lost, but desperate for a purpose; however, they were not sure there was in the first place. Instead, they mumbled in only slightly coherent ways.

Every description of Willow made him feel more and more guilty, but Flash was not lashing out at him. Flash was not using his moment of sincerity to his strength. He was informing him of his feelings, which felt like a stark contrast to the Flash he had known prior to the entire mess.

Nothing stung as most as that last line though.

I'm Nobody

A term that Ross felt was familiar to him in a way he had no clue how to grasp. Nearly everyone at this school felt it from what he could tell. That was hyperbole, of course. He only knew one other person who felt that way, and they were a Hufflepuff as he was. It was such an unusual term.

Ross poked Flash.

"Well, you're clearly some one. Can't be nobody. That ain't a choice." He remarked.

Ross let out a sigh, his head tilted slightly like it was the first time they had met. He clearly meant well of the girl, and Ross had blatantly screwed it up. Everyone had their grounding points, and Ross had his diary. Flash had taken that from him, and in turn Ross had taken away his.

It truly was not a fair exchange, and Ross planned on fixing that if things continued without Flash breaking his neck.

"Look, err.. I was.. I was the one who told 'er and such of what ya've done and.. Well, He took a shallow breath I'm sorry. I 'ad no idea... The boy trailed off.

There was an awkward pause in the conversation, as there normally was with Ross. When was a conversation with Ross not awkward? It always ended in him getting hurt, someone else getting hurt, or someone getting investigated. Often times it ended with all of the above, and this was living proof of it.

"What was the 'ole deal in the y'know... trophy room anyways?" he inquired, realizing that this may have been a leading factor in some of the stuff he had said.

Flash felt little regard for Ross’ empty placation, that everyone was someone. He couldn’t blame people for not understanding how he felt. He had emptied himself purposefully, to get rid of the useless things blocking his path to greatness. Of course, technically, he was a unique human being, in the strictest definition of the word, but that wasn’t what Flash was concerned with. He didn’t want to be lumped in with all the people who weren’t trying as hard as he was. He didn’t want to be useless.

It wasn’t only that, but he had grand aspirations. Until he achieved something of worth he couldn’t call himself somebody. Instead of simply existing, he was trying to craft himself to his own preferences. This person he built himself up to be was who he was, everything behind it he had ripped apart and thrown away long ago. This new person, too, was also being ripped apart.

He needed to remember why he wanted to be that person to begin with. Was it only out of envy of Val, and the life that he had? It had always been in the back of his mind, to try to become someone like his oldest brother. It worked, people were drawn to Flash just as they had been to Val, but somewhere along the line the information got jumbled and confused. Now, everywhere he turned people were telling him he was fake.

How could it be fake when he had worked so tirelessly to craft it? Not only that, but the person he really was couldn’t do what he had to do. The person he really was, was just a young, confused child.

Then, to Flash’s shock, Ross apologized. He had to turn and look at him, to see the earnestness on his face, to let it sink in that it was real. He never expected to be apologized to. Ross was a person unlike any he had ever met. The feeling ran through him that he needed to know him better. He wanted to understand the kind of person who did the things Ross did. Somehow, he had ended up being the more mature one in the end.

Then, for reasons unknown, Ross continued once more. He asked more questions, asked for clarification. If he had really been so perplexed, Flash was willing to elucidate.

”The deal? Every day I was surrounded by my family’s name and influence. The banquets, the meetings, the galas… if I had to hear about their greatness here too I… I would suffocate.” It was a dramatic description, but Flash could feel it just by describing it. His breath felt short. ”It’s… I’m sorry.”

Flash took a moment to pace himself, he realized his heart started beating quickly again, just like before the party. He tried to downplay it while he was in the middle of class, he still couldn’t imagine causing a scene. It reminded him of something, however.

”I’m sorry, Ross. For what I did, and said.” Flash recovered quickly, having mostly been able to curb the oncoming attack. ”I wanted you to feel as unhappy as I was. Hopefully… I’ll learn from this, and be better.”

Flash seemed slightly startled that he apologized, and if he were in any other situation then he likely would have cracked a smile or perhaps laughed. Instead, all he felt was more culpability. He had really messed this up, but he kept in mind that Flash was the one who stared it. It did not justify it, but it did make his issue seem a lot less horrid.

Instead, he kept a concerned face as he continued to talk. As he began to bring up family issues with that, he certainly could not relate. Sure he was not sure how to feel of his family, but being overshadowed constantly seemed like a dreadful way to spend your childhood years. To have that bar seemed overwhelming, but once again Ross really could not process all this. Instead, he just felt bad for the boy. He was unsure of why, but he just did. It seemed like a stressful time all around for Flash.

"That's crummy..." he mumbled to himself. "Suspect you'll be just as good as 'em someday, if not already." the boy added, deciding not to ask more questions on that point.

When one had enough knowledge to simply infer, it was best to do that for the time being. Sure clarification was great, but as a detective one should not stress whoever they are asking. On top of that, this was not entirely detective work. This was Ross fixing an issue that should never have happened. He had stooped to Flash's original level, and now both of them were paying the harsh consequences.

Ross had doubted Flash would do anything to change how he acted until he heard it.

An apology

Ross would have laughed if Flash's reaction to his apology was in any other context, but he felt he would more than likely laugh at himself as he was caught extremely off guard. Flash did not seem like the type of boy to stand up to his mistakes, yet here he was.

Ross was left stunned for a few moments, which caused silence for a moment. His facial expression went from concerned to surprised to a small smile sneaking upon his face as he fully comprehended the apology.

Seems you'll be better in no time with an attitude like that." he remarked, attempting to give as much positive feedback as he could.

He did not truly fully forgive the boy, but he was getting there. Ross was not normally such the optimist, yet he felt the positivity was important right now. He could not risk another argument, and quite frankly he did not want one. He wanted to figure this boy out before making any other moves, as he did not want to get hurt and he did not want the snake boy to get hurt either.

He pretended to look at his notes for a moment in order to cease any social awkwardness.

"Look, i think i can help ya' get 'er back." he offered.

A good person would always fix his mistakes, and while Ross was doing a pretty cruddy job at it currently he was determined to attempt to fix this one.
