🄰n uncontrolled smile tugged at her lips. Her eyes captivated, shining along as she listened. Skylar couldn’t believe what she heard from Zephyr. He shared the same passion with her and then even had a similar dream.

All her life, she had listened to many mysterious stories about places and odd creatures from her aunt. So, she always wanted to have a big adventure journey beyond her playground, like her aunt one day.

She chuckled a little bit. “What a coincidence!” Her tone softened. “I always dream similarly to that. I even made a future plan that I will go to explore the Forbidden Forest myself someday. I wish to see many magical, mysterious plants, animals and places. As much as I can. I dream to see them and learn about them, like in the book, as you said.” She eagerly nodded. “And yes, I’ve read that book. I guess the author must have a greatest journey in his world. I am so envious.”

The way Zephyr explained further about chamomile tea. She began to adore him a bit. She already knew about that fact, but she just listened quietly, letting him express his love about plant was entertaining her like she watching herself. After the boy began to question her love for mandrake, she was startled. “Yeah, they’re pretty loud.” She scratched her head with scales from dragon hide gloves. “But I think it was adorable. If I have ear muffs on, what's to scare about them?” She shrugged. “It almost looks like a baby crying. Don’t you think? It’s… it feels the same way like… like taking care of a baby, I guess.” She let out a small, embarrassed laugh and gazed away.

Skylar was soaked with water after the accident. But she managed to protect her icy jar successfully. She tug her wet hair that got splatter to her face and stood up again. “Sorry, I let my guard down. I am so sorry.” Looking at her partner with guilt. She knew how he seemed to like the way she worked with him, but this might cause his doubt ever wanting to pair up with her again. She didn’t like this feeling, the guilt that she was the one who made a mistake, especially in Herbology, which she was proud of. However, she saw him chuckled that calm her down in a way.

As the boy asked her if everything was finished, she nodded. “We just wait for it to cool down. I think.” She then glanced to the front of the class. It seemed like the professor had one more thing to teach the students. She wondered what spell it would be.

[quote]Zephyr found out it was so easy to talk to Skylar, even connect with her. They’re both not stranger for caring so deeply about dirt under their nails, slow growth, patience, and details most people overlook. You don’t have to explain why it matters she already gets it. It was relieving to know he’s not the only one watching leaves instead of people, or getting excited about roots, soil, and slow progress. They can work side by side comfortable while focusing on the plants.

It also feels validating that they share same interest, it confirms that his way of seeing the world is valuable. They just simply tuned to the same things. So when Skylar talked about wanting to explore the Forbidden Forest, his eyes widened, “Really? Me too! I want to explore the place and hoping I’ll find magical creatures. There’s so much out there we only read about. It’s a waste not to see it for ourselves.”

He nodded when she mentioned the book. “Same. I always think about what it must have been like for the author traveling, meeting creatures, writing everything down. It must have been the best life.” He smiled at her.

He laughed at her description of mandrakes. “A baby crying? Can’t blame you for thinking that. But it was a dangerous cry.” She looked embarrassed for it so he shook his head. “It’s okay, we find comfort where we could.”

After the accident she apologized, “You don’t need to be sorry.” He glanced at the soaked vines. “Accidents like that happens. You reacted fast and protected the seed, and you also warned me.” The next thing to do now was to wait for things to cool down, “Okay, got it.”

He followed her gaze toward the front of the class. The professor started explaining the next spell, who stood beside the dummy while twirling her wand between her fingers.

"The spell I'm going to demonstrate is the Clothing Ignition Spell. Lacarnum Inflamari is the incantation y’all will need. 'Lacarnum' comes from Latin word 'lacerna,' meaning 'cloak.' As for 'Inflamari,' its Latin origin is 'inflammare' which means to 'ignite.' Say it with me, slowly: La-KAR-num In-flah-MAR-ee."

The professor enunciated each syllable and asked them to repeat it. Zephyr pronounced the words slowly and clearly, “La-KAR-num In-flah-MAR-ee.” And then followed the wand movement as instructed. Moving the wand upwards diagonally then downwards in the same direction like a triangle, and curved the point inwards and rotated round bracket shape underneath the triangle. A stream of fire projected from the tip of the wand set the dummy’s vest ablaze. Then the professor casted extinguo before the garment burned too much. Zephyr was pretty amazed by the spell. She glanced at Skylar, whistling and raising his wand as if telling her it’s their turn to practice the spell.

🄰 small laugh slipped from her mouth when she realized how messy she looked, compared to the boy standing next to her. The black green cloak and socks were soaked in water, weighing her body down. Her braids loosened their tie while she began to shake her head a little. Her hair started to fluff up the curvy as it slowly dryed out. Even though both faces sweated from adrenaline and tiredness, she looked like someone just come back from the war more than him.

Skylar let out a long sigh, glancing at the boy. She felt really appreciated working with Zephyr today. He was a perfect partner that she could pair up with in Herbology. She was too confident that she thought she could deal with the Fire Seed Bush alone, but he reminded her how wrong she could be. From the result, her stamina couldn’t last past the half hour if she was holding the jar, casting the spell, and trying to catch the seeds at the same time. Also, she hadn’t known working with someone could be this fun if she decided to solo.

Her eyes drifted away in her thoughts as she lined up to submit the work like other students. After everyone got back to their place, the stations were cleared out in the blink of an eye. Maybe it's almost the bell time. The professor rolled out the dummy from somewhere to quickly give a demonstration.

Skylar was a bit concerned. She might not be able to make a perfect movement. She carried the weight of dragon hide gloves and the icy jar for far too long. Her wrist was slightly twitching and sore from the pain. When she rotated her wrist a bit to relax the muscle. A small crack sound popped. She unintentionally dropped her wand.

Looking at Zephyr casting the perfect incantation, she was amazed by how much of his strength was left in him. She was clapping and smiling, but her eyes were worried for herself. Then, it came Skylar's turn to try. She still grabbed her wand tightly. She forced her hand, drawing a triangle in the air. As long as she made the right motion and pronounced it correctly. It would work. She kept telling herself.

After finishing her inward move at the end. The motion looked like a curved beak.

“Lacarnum Inflamari!”

Her hand kept shaking more and more, but she still bore the pain. When she focused on something, her concentration was clear. A hot blaze finally projected, but too big. It melted the whole vest on the dummy. Luckily, Skylar couldn’t hold her hand long, so she stopped after a few second the fire came out from the tip of her wand.

She exhaled a long breath as her hand twitched. Skylar got back to the line and rested in silence, waiting for the class to end, so she would be done for today.

[quote]Zephyr stood there still damp and feeling the tiredness in his arms and shoulders as the class finally wound down. His gloves were damp, his sleeves were warm from the heat, and his wrist was sore, but still manageable. He thought about how close the seed had come to going wrong and how fast he reacted without freezing up. The practical work took so much energy.

For the new spell, he watched the wand movement. Triangle shape then the curve underneath. He practiced it once in the air before his turn. “Lacarnum Inflamari!” When he cast the spell, the fire came out properly in just one try which was surprising. Magic is incredible, you say the words, move your wand the right way, and spell works as expected. Of course there were other factors that could affect the success of the spell work, it could go bad or not at all. He looked at the dummy’s vest which was still smoking, and felt amazed. The fact that it worked exactly as taught was unreal to him. For someone who grew up unaware of the wizarding world, he’s doing good so far.

He heard the clap and when he glanced around, he saw Skylar looking in his direction. She must have seen his practice and was cheering him on. Seeing that, he grinned at her and gave him a thumbs up. The class moved on, and he stayed aware of her presence nearby while also keeping his own focus.

The class finally ended and as he packed up, he was satisfied. He handled unexpected problems without freezing and successfully casted the spells they have learned that day. As they went out, he waited for Skylar and smiled at her, “Good job today, thanks for the help. Next time, let’s work together again. See you around?” With that, he went to his next class.

END.
