The Detour

Timothy had intended to go straight back to Ravenclaw tower after his visit to the Ancient Runes classroom. He'd lingered there longer than he had expected! His conversation with the professor still looping through his mind, as well as rehearsing how he'd explain to Rose why he'd vanished.

He reached the main staircase of the north tower, from here he would have to go down towards the grand staircase then up Ravenclaw tower. But standing on the short landing he froze with one hand on the banister.

A pressure, thin and bright, pressed gently against the inside of his head. not painful, but distinct! Like someone tapping a finger behind his eyes.

Timothy inhaled sharply and jumped back into the doorway away from the stairs. After a moment, he realised that nothing dangerous was going to happen, but that pressure was still there.

"Not now," he muttered under his breath. as he glanced down the stairs.

There was no-one else on the staircase climbing up. He looked up the stairs. Your being ridiculous. It's a headache. I probably just need some sleep.

Despite his attempts to convince himself, he started climbing the staircase. it wound high above to the very top of the north tower. Timothy climbed.

The air shifted with every turn, drifting between warm and cool, like pockets of weather trapped inside the tower! When he reached the top he found himself looking at a shimmering light spilling from beneath a doorway, his heart was racing.

He gently pushed the door, and it swung inwards revealing... is it a classroom?

Soft blues and whites flowed around the space, curtains hanging like drifting seaweed stirred by an unseen current. Timothy stared at the enchanted stained-glass which shone with moving manatees and schools of silver fish, bobbing and weaving through the shimmering panes.

It was at this point Timothy realised that he was stood in the centre of the class room, though he didn't remember moving.

He trailed his fingers along the sand-coloured tablecloth of a nearby desk. Leaning forward he inspected the bowl of water, the surface gleamed like small, captured pieces of the ocean.

His breath left him in a quiet rush. The pressure in his head had eased instantly, dissolving the moment he crossed the threshold as though he had completed something expected of him.

Timothy shivered. The classroom was much colder than the ones he had attended his classes in. He looked around wondering what was taught here, it must be one of the electives that students could pick in their third year.

He spotted a grand staircase at the back of the classroom, and a slight twinge of pressure led him to go up. Perhaps whoever taught this class had an office up here.

When he reached the very top he saw two doors.

The first was plain. Timothy walked passed it.

The second had a small plaque on it that read "Professor Desislava Nenovsky".

Timothy heard a quiet knocking. Then stared at his own hand as he realised it had been his fist tapping on the door.

Desislava had been grading a few end of semester assignments when her hand stilled and her eyes looked up. It wasn't often that visitors approached her tower. Her placement amongst the staff of Hogwarts had become somewhat of a strange one as she was not a professor many sought out for normal conversation. Occasionally she was greeted by the presence of a few special visitors; namely Sarai and occasionally Samuel Sauber, though his presence had shifted somewhat diminishingly as he found his footing well amongst the new heads of houses. She was happy to see he was so well accustomed and that Sarai had been recovering well after the birth of her twins. However lately Sarai's absence had been noted and her Tower-mate, Jessamine Lancaster had moved up into her own position of Head of House along with Samuel.

It had become rather lonely these winter months.

Desislava had been planning too perhaps take an early Holiday vacation and return home to the islands of Mo'orea Mai'ao to see her boyfriend and relish in the tropics. It would help with the lack of sunshine and the lack of warmth that the artificial magic she had cast inside the office and her bedroom to keep herself cozy. The grading in front of her had been whatever had been left on her desk after her last class the other day and then she was going to head to Hogsmeade and floo home.

However the knock at her door stopped her in her tracks, her mind turning as she felt the wave of uncertainty and confusion emanating from the other side. Carefully, so as not to spook the poor individual behind her door, Desi moved towards the entrance and opened it to see a much smaller frame standing before her with quite the dazed expression. Desislava looked down at him with a curious expression of her own on her face.

"Are you lost my dear? Your tower entrance is only just around the corner." Desislava spoke softly so as not to spook the kid in front of her. The Ravenclaw emblem on his robes and the blue and copper tone of his tie gave him away as a lost little first year. She stepped aside and offered him the opportunity to step into her office. The way that the dazed expression graced his features reminded her much of how she had existed when she had become a lost student so many years ago. For her though, it had been due to her inner eye awakening in a time of prejudice and secrecy.

It had become quite the piece of information to her about the number of Seer students who had started to matriculate into the general population of school students. A stark difference from her time as a student where such commotion had let to her removal from Koldovstorvetz and allowed her to study uninhibited in the safety and seclusion of the Tenūsa school. To see and hear about the students who were allowed such freedom to embrace an ability set before them by the divine eye? It was fulfilling to say the least.

This student in front of her simply looked lost. But Desi was nothing if not of an island heart. She left the door open for the student to enter but made her own way back into her office as she waved for her teapot with one hand and dismissed her papers and grading with the other. Tea was always a warm indicator. For the particularly picky student she did have hot chocolate but this wasn't something she advertised so as not to let the population depend on it.

"It's quite chilly out today. Would you like a cup of tea before you retire? I was just thinking of making some myself before I set my sights upon resting." Desi mused as she water boiled swiftly and with vigor. It was quite amusing to her that her teapot boiled faster in the winter months.

"Now I do not believe we have been introduced. My name is Professor Nenovsky. Who might you be? If you know the answer to such a sweeping question."

The door swung open before Timothy knew what to do, before him stood a witch with waist length honey blonde hair, who looked down at him curiously.

As she asked whether he was lost, he shook his head. It wasn't quite true. He knew how to get to the Ravenclaw common room, but he still wasn't sure where he was.

As he watched the professor begin preparing tea, sliding away a stack of parchment he hesitantly shuffled into the room looking around at the odd decorations. He could almost forget that they were near the top of a tall tower in Scotland.

Eventually he found his voice, but it took a second attempt to form words.

"Sorry for disturbing you professor I erm.." he paused. How could he explain that he didn't know why he had walked to this door? She would probably send him to the hospital wing. He had to find a reason that he had been brought here. Was someone going to be hurt again? He looked up to see if there was a chandelier or anything that might fall on the witch, but couldn't see any danger.

"I am Timothy. Tea would be lovely thankyou."

He took a seat opposite the professor, eyes darting around the room taking in the details, trying to work out why he was here.

Desislava smiled politely as the strange Ravenclaw entered her office and took a gander around the decorations that likely seemed entirely out of place for a professor at a school in the Scottish Highlands. Her office resembled more of a surf shack, with a blanket of sand along the floor charmed to remain warm all year round but not to carry itself out in an individual's shoes. A great silver bowl sat in the middle of her office where she conducted hydromancy and scrying sessions if the need felt it called to her, though as of late she more so used it to gaze at herself and question her life choices as she mourned her ocean. The walls were covered in beautiful art that she had been gifted from her neighbors as protections and spiritual guides for her journey across the world. It reminded her so much of home. She had done away with traditional chairs across from her desk and instead, a plush grey linen couch wrapped around the left side of her office allowing her to sit and talk to her visitors in a nicer, more comforting way. Of course if they so pleased, they could sit on her desk chair and she would conjure a chair of her own to sit in- matching their posture and their feelings in the moment.

For Timothy, it seemed a mixture of apprehension, confusion and perhaps wonder.

Desislava moved to the side of her desk where her tea leaf box was. The kettle was boiling and it was time for the flavoring to be added. Guessing that the confusion was the most of the boy's sense of feeling at the moment- she selected a Ginkgo biloba mixture she had and scooped three scoops into the silver pot. Soon a focusing scent emanated from the spout as she poured both herself and her strange visitor a cup and took a seat on her desk.

"Ginkgo Biloba for clarity and focus. I find it helps me when I am out of sorts myself even if I know perfectly where I am." Desislava mused in her less thick but still present Bulgarian accent. Despite years and years away from Pomorie, and the learning of English, French, and Tahitian, she still could not shake the roots of her vernacular when she talked as a Seer should. With confusing patterns.

"You mention apologizing for disturbing me. Why do you think that you have? You are not one of my students yet, but you will be in... a year? Two years? It would be better to disturb me now than down the line in class." She mentioned as she swirled her leaves around in her cup. They were already beginning to settle in the bottom of the porcelain, and she knew it likely would mean she'd gain the compulsion to read them. That was a later problem. For now though...

"Do you know where it is you've ended up Timothy? Not many people enter the Divination tower without purpose unless they feel drawn here." her voice spoke from behind her cup as her eyes pierced into his- analyzing him for a reason or lack there of, of what had brought him into an unfamiliar tower.
