| xxx | Lottie allowed a small laugh to escape her mouth, finally feeling herself settle back down after the shock of the incident. She was clean, the attention was redirected, and it seemed the two girls had somewhat made wonky amends. It was a tad awkward, adjusting to this new respect when Lottie still felt the indelicate bite of frustration threatening her from within. She had to shake it, quickly, otherwise the rest of this project would no doubt continue to be hell. "I suppose I paid for it." Lottie gave an expression of friendly annoyance, before carefully examining the pot of the plant from a distance, ensuring that the job had at least been completed before it exploded in their faces. This was the main reason Lottie hadn't much care for Herboloy. It was so messy. She glanced up from her examination as Avis began a lengthy introduction, and let out another startled laugh at the absurdity of it. She leaned back slightly, absorbing the information as it suited her and throwing the unimportant pieces away. At the mention of the cat, Lottie's eyes lit up slightly, and she sat up. "I have a cat. Nyx. She's a bit of a pain." Lottie supposed they were pretty much done with tending to the plant for now, at least until it had grown enough for its leaves to be of suitable trimming size. She side-eyed the little creature with disdain, but immediately felt a pang of guilt. Violence was all it had ever known. It was bred for it. She couldn't help but feel a strange fondness for it, and had to hold herself back from gently stroking its leaves. With startling mindlessness, Lottie blurted out, "It should have a name." | xxx |

Avis grinned as Lottie let out a startled laugh at her impromptu introduction. Amused confusion was much better than the rocky start the two had gotten off to at the beginning of class. The Ravenclaw took particular notice when her Slytherin counterparts face lit up in familiarity at the mention of Quigley.
"Nyx is a brilliant name," Avis replied, stripping her hands of the dragon hide gloves after inspecting her untidy, yet thorough, work on the fertilizer. Students around them began to shove textbooks back into bags and line up at the fountains to give their hands a good rinse. It seemed day 1 of the dual project was coming to a close. The girl giggled at Lottie's summary of her pet. "Sounds like her and Quigs would get along. Gotten a few too many live doxies as presents..." Avis trailed off, wondering if she'd forgotten to get rid of the last one or if it was still ravaging her dorm mate's silk sheet set.
The Ravenclaw busied herself with packing up as class was coming to a close when suddenly, her partner offered an interesting idea to say the least.
Avis looked up, a quizzical expression written across her face. It was a terrible idea truly. The damn plant had almost nipped her little finger off and gotten them into the whole manure mess into the first place.
But it was such an awful idea that it was funny. And Avis couldn't help but chuckle a bit.
"That's ridiculous," she snorted. "It's a plant. And it hates us anyways."
She cocked her head at the little green menace in front of them, ideas for names blinking into her mind despite her supposed disagreement with the proposition. Avis gave Lottie a sneaky side eye.
"But hypothetically if it did have a name, it would be something evil and villainous and-and...like something the bad guy in a book would be named," she said as 'Lord What's It' and 'Count...Something Evil' flew through her brain. God she wasn't very good at naming things, was she? Perhaps Lottie would have better luck.

| xxx | Nyx was a brilliant name. Lottie was quite proud of it, in fact. It had been a swift decision, likely fueled by the fact that she had been chugging through a large book of poems on the Hogwarts express, and the poem by Catherine Pozzi had seemed to stand out as notably intriguing. She could appreciate the sentiment of eternal mystery, the beauty of being unknown to the world. It was rotten luck that Nyx was unknown to her, as well. "Perhaps. Nyx doesn't get along with many," Lottie replied softly, closing up her textbook and carefully packing away her equipment. It was a bit unfortunate that class was ending just as they had finally warmed up to one another, but it also occurred to Lottie that maybe a moment of reprieve after the disastrous events prior would be beneficial. Her bed sounded awfully appeasing. At Avis's immediate refusal, Lottie sent over an odd look. "It doesn't hate us. It just doesn't know us." Lottie realized how blandly pacifistic that sounded, and grimaced at the sentiment. More perplexing, though, was Avis's hesitant continuance, as she began brainstorming. The hypocrisy of it did not fly over Lottie's head, but she had deduced over the long class period that some things needed to be let go with this girl. She heaved out a thoughtful sigh, leaning forward on her palms and studying the plant in front of her with keen interest. "What about Daisy? Or Geri?" She allowed herself a soft smile, watching the way the little leaves curled and rustled. It seemed so alive like this, not at all burdened by fear or distrust. Perhaps, she thought, it would learn to trust them. One way or another. | xxx |

"I should like to meet Nyx anyway," Avis said with a decisive nod, like she was accepting some sort of challenge. Proving a point wrong seemed to be one of her many flaws. Possibly a side effect of being a younger sibling or something of the like.
The Ravenclaw dropped her packed bag on the table in front of her and slumped over it, resting her chin on crossed arms with an impatient tap of her toe beneath the bench. She rolled her eyes comically at Lottie's next statement.
"I'll believe it when I see it," she retorted, eyeing the plant again before brainstorming her thoughts of an evil name out loud. Avis watched as the Gryffindor leaned forward until she was eye level with the beastie. She cringed, waiting for it to snap at the girl's nose, but was mildly surprised when it resorted to a few curling leaves.
The younger girl snorted at Lottie's suggestions despite herself. "I like Geri, I suppose," she said, leaning in a bit closer to the little plant. She glanced sideways at her companion who seemed to be lost in her own world of thought as she studied their newly named project. What an odd duck.
Still, she'd managed to see things in a perspective that Avis hadn't even considered. It was rather interesting the way Lottie's brain seemed to work. Quite the opposite of her own really. For a brief moment, she wondered if she might actually learn something in this class. The Ravenclaw wrinkled her nose. Not likely.

| xxx | It took Lottie a moment to realize that her profound fondness for the small plant had not gone unnoticed. Quickly, she reeled back, clearing her throat awkwardly. She attempted to busy herself with packing away the rest of her things. This was not foreign to her, this unattractive tendency to get lost in her head and belatedly realize that her mask had slipped. It took great care to keep a composed demeanor, care that she found harder and harder to maintain by the day. "We'll have to remember it's nature," She emphasized quietly, "Though I think it's perhaps possible to soften it up. If only slightly." It was a sentiment that lacked any material evidence, but Lottie could appreciate the prospect of a potential project. With the million other things running through her mind, perhaps she could find some degree of reprieve in this curious plant. And, in that same regard, some comfort in this annoying girl. Students were already beginning to file out the greenhouse doors and back to the castle. Lottie neatly slung her bag over her shoulder and, with caution, returned Geri to it's place among the other geraniums. She glanced it over once more, before rounding back on Avis. "I have Flying next. Professor Weems will have my head if I'm late again." She swayed slightly, catching herself back on the balls of her feet. "I'll fill out my half of the report tonight, and I'll hope and pray you'll do the same." | xxx |

Avis snorted as her partner seemed to come back to Earth, spouting some logical nonsense about the plant's "nature."
"Don't talk about Geri like he's not right in front of us. He might get offended," she replied in a lighthearted tone. The Ravenclaw liked to believe her joke had been just that. A joke. But a small twinge deep down told her Lottie's strange attachment to the snappy little thing was perhaps starting t get to her. Her mouth twitched into a thoughtful frown as she watched Lottie carry their project back over to join the rest of the beasties.
As she turned back, Avis snapped her gaze back forward and busied herself with donning her bag. The Ravenclaw swiveled as her partner stopped behind her.
"C'mon, Weems can't be half as bad as the finger-eating plants we dealt with today," she said, her mouth forming an amused smile before rolling her eyes at Lottie's next comment. "Yeah, yeah. I'll get it done."
With that, Avis popped up and walked towards the greenhouse doors, relieved that she didn't have anything but Quidditch practice left in her schedule. Before she stepped outside, however, the girl paused before turning back towards her partner. It really had been the first time she'd ever remotely enjoyed an Herbology class and Avis had to admit. It hadn't been any of her own doing.
She offered Lottie a lopsided grin. "Nice to meet you.. officially," the girl said. "See you next class."
Avis has left the thread.
