It was that time again, Flying class was probably Sean's least favorite class not because he didn't like it but because he wasn't good at it. Aaron and himself had become friends and had grown closer than Sean expected, they were friends even though they were almost complete opposites. Aaron was muggle-born just like him but he had a natural talent for flying where Sean was more talented at charms and theoretical work.
They made their way with the other students to where Professor Bercegeay was waiting for them. It was a bit of a windy day which was pretty normal for October but it made Sean even more nervous. He had a hard time flying with no wind, he couldn't imagine himself doing any better with it. He listened to the professor give her instructions, they were to partner up and practice stationary flying before moving on to the next step. Sean looked at Aaron who looked as excited as ever to hop on a broom and they partnered up and grabbed a broom each. The brooms were old and some had a bit of a temper.
They then took a bit of distance from the others in case anything happened and put their brooms at the ground. This was the only part Sean was good at calling the broom to him, he cleared his throat and with a confident and stern voice said "UP!" surely enough the broom lodged itself in his hand. He looked at Aaron waiting for him to do the same.

The Wingless Crow
October was here, and it had brought gusty winds and changing leaves with it. Aaron walked with a pep in his step on the way to flying class. It was always the highlight of his week. He'd been at Hogwarts for a little over a month now, and there wasn't a single other class that could compare. Being up on a broom was the most magical thing he had experienced since discovering that he was a wizard.
Aaron could tell that his mate Sean was dreading the class, though, and he totally understood why. Not everyone could be a natural-born flier like himself. Sean was gifted with other skills, though, like being able to sit down and do homework and perform charms in a pinch. Flying was the only thing Sean really needed help with, and it was great because that was the only thing Aaron actually excelled in. Well, flying and socializing.
The two boys had met on the first night because they shared a Hufflepuff dorm room, but they were an unlikely pair. Aaron was incredibly charismatic and approachable, while his bunkmate Sean was pretty quiet and often gave off an anti-social vibe. Of course, once Aaron had gotten to know Sean, he realized he wasn't anti-social at all, he just didn't seem to have a lot of practice approaching and talking to people. The boy also didn't seem to realize he usually had an unfriendly look on his face, but Aaron realized it was because Sean was more of a people watcher than a people talker. Almost as though he wanted to talk to people, but was scared of saying the wrong thing. Aaron tried to help him understand social cues by dragging him into conversations with people, and he even planned to introduce Sean to some of the other friends he had made at Hogwarts.
Right now, though, Aaron was enraptured by Professor Bercegeay's lecture. As per usual, he was just waiting for the cue to grab a broom, and as soon as the professor let them do so, he beelined for a very particular broom. During his first week of classes, he had realized that school brooms were unruly and not the best quality, but there was one school broom far above the rest. As soon as the first year had used it, he noticed the difference in quality and knew that he couldn't go back to the regularly lousy school brooms. Ever since then, he had made sure to grab the same broom every class, even if he had to trick others into letting him have it.
Aaron found the broom pretty easily because he knew its telltale markings, then he joined Sean in finding their own little spot to practice. He still had his usual pep in his step as he placed the broom on the ground.
"Up!" he commanded, and the broom zoomed into his hand. The warmth in his palm was always a telltale sign that he would have a good class today. Well, he always had a good flying class. Aaron looked at Sean and offered a sympathetic smile. "Don't worry, all you have to do for now is hover. Just remember not to push off too much or you'll go shooting into the air like last time," he instructed, recalling the disaster of last week's class.
Aaron mounted his broom and waited for Sean to do the same. "You ready? Let's do it together. Three.. two.. one.. push! Gently!" Aaron lifted off from the ground and hovered just a few feet in the air, waiting to see if Sean could do the same. It was definitely a bit different today because of the wind, and Aaron had to put in a little effort to hover in one spot and not get blown in the wind's direction. He just hoped that Sean could do the same.

Sean took a deep breath and pushed up as gently as he could. He was now hovering a few feet from the ground. He was nervous, every time the wind blew he could feel the broom move with it but Sean tried his best to stay put. He looked at Aaron who seemed to be concentrating a bit more than usual which made Sean feel a tiny bit better but it was still very apparent that he was more at ease. After a few seconds of wobbling and trying not to make a show of himself again, Sean managed to station himself as best as he could.
"I think I might be getting better at thi-"
Before he could finish his sentence a hug gust of wind hit and made him lose control of his broom. The broom started to dart in one direction and then into another, Sean tried his best to hold on and try to regain control of the old broom. Not again He thought as he almost ran into another group of students. It was a nightmare, there was nothing he could do to calm the broom.
He tried to think of a solution but nothing came to mind, he didn't know a charm or anything that could help him in this situation.

"You're doing great!" Aaron said encouragingly to his friend. Sean was actually hovering pretty well today. Aaron was about to suggest that they try to go a little bit higher, but there was a sudden gust of wind that blew everything to heck.
Aaron gripped his broom a little tighter to exercise more control and keep his broom steady. The rest of the class seemed to be doing the same because, unfortunately, it was only Sean who had been blown completely out of control. "Hold on!" Aaron shouted. His instinct to help his friend kicked in, and he darted after him.
The children were only a month into school, so they hadn't exactly been taught to bob and weave yet. Nevertheless, Aaron was ignoring the wind and gliding smoothly from side to side as he rushed after Sean and his unruly broom. It wasn't all Sean's fault that he had lost control - just from watching him, Aaron could tell that he had chosen a particularly undesirable broomstick. It would be hard for Sean to regain his confidence at this rate.
"Sean! SEAN!" Aaron knew his friend was probably terrified, especially as the broom jumped towards classmates and became more dangerous. "Pull up! Pull up gently!" Aaron shouted, trying to get Sean to pay attention to him rather than the fear of the situation. They were flying side-by-side now - well, Aaron was flying and Sean was just along for his broom's wild ride. When he finally caught Sean's eye, Aaron offered a wild grin. "I'm here with ya, nothing'll happen! Just pull up! Gently!" he called to him.
If Sean could regain his wits and manage to pull up, it would hopefully stop the broom in its tracks. Worst case scenario? Sean would pull up too far and start darting straight up into the sky. Aaron could only hope his friend would manage to pull off the former option.

Sean was trying his best to calm down when he heard Aaron cry out to him. He was giving him instructions but Sean had to regain his cool before trying anything. He was usually very composed but something about being out of control made him very uneasy. He closed his eyes and took some deep breaths. As he was doing he thought of how far he had come from the bored boy who had no friends to the wizard student who was gaining confidence every day.
After a few minutes he finally got his heart at a normal pace, he was still uneasy but at least he could try the manoeuvre. He started gently pulling his broom upwards being very careful, the broom seemed to start slowing down a bit so he kept pulling until the broom stopped. He was sweating from the adrenaline and made a sigh of relief.
"Thank you, Aaron. I owe you one... Again"
He made a small smile at his friend, he felt a bit ashamed of being the only one of his class to have this much difficulty with flying but not all was bad. The flying classes had shown Aarons dedication to helping his friends which Sean respected and appreciated, he had never trusted anyone so it was very new to him. They were high above the class now and had a great view of the castle and it's surroundings. The only times Sean had been this high was while out of control so he had never had the opportunity to see this beautiful landscape. He took it in for a bit before deciding it was probably time to get back down, he didn't want to lose control again and the winds seemed stronger the higher you went up.
"We should probably get back down don't you think ?"

"You can pay me back by helping me with that Charms essay tonight," Aaron said with a smile, brushing off his friend's apology. It really wasn't necessary because they were mates, and Sean helped him with schoolwork all the time.
Noticing Sean's look, Aaron took in the view as well. It was nothing new to him, but he knew this was definitely the first time Sean had gotten this high up. The castle looked amazing from an angle like this, and it really solidified the idea of magic.
Ever since arriving at Hogwarts, Aaron felt overwhelmed. He was muggle-born, just like Sean, but he found the adjustment to the wizarding world was an intense process. With how much he struggled with classwork, half the time he felt like maybe they had made a mistake choosing him to attend Hogwarts. Sean was clearly destined to be a wizard, because he did so well in classes. But Aaron's only real magical talent was flying.
Moment like this - where Aaron was flying and he could take a deep breath of fresh air - were the only times he was able to fully embrace the fact that he was a wizard and he belonged in this world.
"Yeah, let's go down. Maybe you should stick to the ground on a windy day like today," Aaron answered, laughing. The two of them were able to joke about situations like this because they happened often, and it helped to laugh. It made Aaron feel closer to Sean that they could fail at things in front of each other, joke about it and still help each other in the end.
He let Sean go down first and he followed closely behind in case there were any more gusts of wind. Thankfully, it only took a few moments before they reached the ground. "You done flying for today?" Aaron asked, still hovering a foot above the ground rather than dismounting. Sean probably knew that Aaron would never give up a chance to fly, so if he decided to stay on the ground, Aaron would keep practicing until class was over.

Sean took his time making his way down, he wasn't as nervous as earlier but still stayed very concentrated on not losing control again. He had enough of flying for today, but strangely enough felt like he had gotten a tiny bit better even if it was just a tiny bit. Aaron had helped him a lot, not only with flying but with his self confidence and social skills. He still had a long way to go but little by little he felt himself become braver when it came to talking to people, he always had his cold expression there's not much he could do about that but at least he was better at sounding friendlier.
He made his way down with Aaron and once they got near the ground Sean dismounted."I think I am done with flying for today. But you should practice more, I'll be reading about how to control my broom better" He smiled at his friend and then went to put his broom back, he grabbed a book he had gotten from the library about flying and sat on one of the benches. Reading was one of Sean's favorite things to do if not his favorite and it made it even better when he felt like he was learning too.
