The picnic was over but Ellie still had three days left at the Randensmith family's summer home and she was going to savor every last one. The picnic had been so much fun but they were all stuffed from the food. Which was why when Ellie and Amelia where walking around the house and found their grandma taking out chocolate chip cookie, ingredients. Huh? But the picnic is… over?Ellie thought to herself, just as their Grandma looked up.

"Ah kind of you to join me!" She said, "Want to join me in baking?"

Ellie looked at Amelia, shrugged and smiled, "I would love to Grandma!"

Ellie and Amelia both walked over to where their Grandma was measuring out ingredients, taking a bag of flour, and measuring cup, Ellie set to work with Amelia working beside her.

After the ingredients had been measuring, and mixed together, her grandma decided it was time for a special ingredient. She took out a little bag of yellow powder, sprinkled a little on saying, "So that they don't get mold!" and placed on the pans in little cookie, finally putting it into the oven.

"Just like when you were just little children!" Her grandma exclaimed, smiling.

Ellie and Amelia smiled back at her. While the cookies were baking, they set to cleaning up the Randensmith family's summer houses kitchen. It was perfect, right as the last dust of flour had been swept up, the last measuring cup picked up, and the last drop of milk was wiped away, the timer dinged and the cookies where finished.

Her Grandma took them out and let them cool, but not before handing them each one, “save this, for when you need it most.”

What is that supposed to mean? Ellie thought, Save for when I need it? Ellie thought about this as she slipped this hot cookie into her pocket. Amelia did the same, looking just as confused.

With the cookies done, the girls headed up to their rooms. Little did they know how different their life would be, in a day.

That night the girls slept peacefully. It was just like any other night, Amelia was sleeping in, while Ellie woke up early. Ellie went into the kitchen where her grandma as normally having an early morning tea, but she wasn’t there. Knowing her Grandfather was a heavy sleeper, she walked into her grandparents bedroom. She tiptoed over to her grandma’s side. Her grandfather’s chest was moving, but her grandma’s was still as a rock. Still, in moving. Ellie put a hand on her Grandma’s chest to see if there was any hint of pulse. Nothing. Silence. Ellie started feeling tears in her eyes as she walked to her grandpa’s side of the bed to rouse him awake.

“Grandpa, grandpa.” She whispered between tears.

He woke up, noticing her tears, “What’s wrong?”

Trying not to cry, Ellie said, “Grandma.”

Confused, her grandpa turned to look at his wife. His shoulders started shaking when he noticed how still she was. He tried shaking her, but of course she didn’t rise. Tears started falling down his face.

“No, no, Catarina!” Her grandpa said, “It can’t be your time already!”

Deciding to give her Grandfather a moment, she walked out of the room. Not knowing where to go, she went to her parents room and woke them up, telling them the news. Her father started crying, her mother started crying and got up to walk to her father’s parents room.

Next, she went to Amelia’s parents. They had quick a similar reaction and went running to the grandparents room. Nw for the last people, her cousin and sister. She had been dreading this the most, how were they going to react? She walking carefully.

She shook her sister then tried to rouse Amelia up.

“What is going on?” Her sister asked when both of them were awake.

Ellie took a breath, tears streaming her face. “It’s Grandma, she’s, she’s dead.” Ellie took the last cookie her Grandma had made out of her pocket and more tears came.

Now that the family gathering/picnic was over, Amelia was completely stuffed. She knew that she (and Ellie) were definitely not going to be eating too many things for a LONG time.
In fact, when she saw Grandmama pulling out ingredients from the cupboard, her first reaction was ughhh nooo grandmaaa you can't possibly be doing this to us.. I'm still full from the family picnic!
But before she spoke those thoughts, she noticed that she was pulling out ingredients for her favorite cookie recipe!!
Ohhh yum! she thought. But wait... why make cookies for AFTER the picnic? Why not make it FOR the picnic??
Glancing at Ellie - noticing that her expression mirrored hers - she walked over the help her mix in all the ingredients.
When Amelia and Ellie finished mixing all the ingredients (or so amelia thought..) Amelia said Grandma, I love these cookies and all but.. why are we making cookies after the picnic?
Oh my dear Amelia, i thought we could make cookies because, well, who doesn't love cookies? though you might want to save those for the right time.. you know?
Then she grabbed something from the pantry, saying with a smile, This is the most important ingredient of them all! you wouldn't want these cookies to go to waste!

After the cookies were ready she gave one to Amelia and one to Ellie and put the rest in a bowl and set it on the table. Well, i'm feeling quite tired, so I will go upstairs now. Bye bye girls! Love you..

Then she disappeared, leaving Amelia to say to Ellie Well, I guess i'll go to then! Goodnight 'cuz!
Amelia then went into her bedroom and jumped into bed, not knowing that her life was about to change forever.

...

All of a sudden, morning came way to quickly and she heard Ellie, or somebody, running around throughout the house. Huh, wonder what's wrong. Amelia thought to herself, somewhat cheerfully.

Amelia, Amelia wake up! wake up! said a voice that sounded very nearby. Opening her eyes, Amelia saw Ellie, but Ellie didn't look happy at all. In fact, Ellie didn't even look like herself anymore.

What's wrong, Ellie?? Amelia said worriedly.

It's Grandma Ellie replied, tears rolling down her face. She's dead.
Then Amelia noticed the cookie that Ellie had pulled out. No..it can't be.. is it? The cookies that grandma gave us?.

And then Amelia couldn't help it. She pulled open the drawer where she had put her cookie, and her own tears started rolling down her face. But what was worse was the words that were echoing in her head, the last words that grandma had said. Bye bye girls.. love you!
...
All of a sudden the meaning came to her. S-she knew.. that she was going to d-d-die Amelia whisper-sobbed to Ellie.
But Ellie's response was drowned out by a knocking on the door.
Ameliaaa said a very familiar voice. Mom, what are you doing heree? Amelia said. Well I heard about grandma and i knew that you would be upset because of how close you girls were to her..
But Mom... where's dad? wouldn't it affect Dad the most??
About that Amelia. Well, Dad found out from your aunt and uncle, you know, cousin Ellie's parents. So now he's in our bedroom, and he claims he won't come out in a loooong time. she said sadly. Though I don't quite get that if you ask me.. after all he still has his grandpa. It's not like everyone he loves is gone or anything. And the death was peaceful. She died in her sleep... Amelia's mom mumbled. Well, I'll go leave you girls alone. If you need anything, I'm in the kitchen! she said brightly.

Ellie went to tell the rest of her cousins in the other room the news. Why did she have to be the one to bring the news around? Maybe because she was the only one actually awake this early in the morning. The rest of her cousins- the boy cousins, were right across from the girls room, even though during the day, they all hung out together. It made sense, all the boys cousins in one room, and the girls in the other. Ellie walked into their rooms, where the four boys were sleeping.

Tears in her eyes, she tapped each of the sleeping boys and waited till they woke up so that she only had to say the terrible news once. The first one awake was her oldest cousin who was a fourth year at Hogwarts. "Ellie, what is wrong?" He said, walking over to her, seeing the tear staining her face.

"Oh Lucas, wait till the others wake up, I don't want to say it anymore then I have to." Ellie said, as the rest of the boys woke up.

"Urge, why did you wake us up so early." Her cousin Kyle, Lucas's younger brother, a going to be first year said, with a eye role.

By now, the other two boys, Chris (9) and Jackie (13) had woken up so Ellie decided to tell them the news. "I woke you up... really early to tell you..." a new flood of tears filled Ellie's eyes, "To tell... that, Grandma..." Ellie trailed off, again.

"It can't be that bad..." Jackie said.

"I don't know Jackie," Lucas said, "Ellie doesn't cry very often."

"Okay, okay," More tears, "It's about grandma." Jackie nods slowly, "She passed away last night, in her sleep, Auntie Kathrine said from a heart attack. But she passed peacefully." Ellie added for Chris who was crying rivers of tears.

Ellie watched as the four boys got up to go to their parents and she walked to her mom with them. Her mom was sitting on the couch, her hand on her husbands back, who had his face in his palms. Lana Randensmith (Ellie's mom) looked up at her daughter and opened her other hand for her to sit next to her.

"Is, is she really gone?" Ellie whispered, "Like, this isn't a false call or something, there is still hope?"

Her mom shook her head, "There is nothing we can do baby, at least we know she was at rest and was peaceful."

Ellie nodded then, seeing Amelia, walked over to her, "Grandma, she did seem weird yesterday right to you too? Baking the cookies, and all the talk about her time, you don't think, she knew right?"

Of course not, how could you know you where going to die? The words felt stupid as they left Ellie's mouth, but she watched Amelia's face carefully, seeing how she took Ellie's question in, their grandma had seem a bit off yesterday, she couldn't be the only on who noticed.
