Avery couldn't believe today was the day she was going to duel for the first time ever. She had done 'duels' in the past with her cousin, Dylan, but those duels had never included real magic or a way to hurt each other. It was just a way they used to poke fun at each other and have a good time. Though this was real, and there was the chance that the two of them could really hurt each other if they weren't too careful. Avery didn't really know her opponent. The two girls had actually met for the first time a few days before. It was that same day that Avery had asked her friend, Sere if she wanted to moderate their duel. She knew from past chats with Sere that she was a duelist and knew the rules and how duels worked, so who could be better to moderate their duel? As Avery walked into the dueling club, she was surprised by it. Though she had the feeling she would very soon become acquainted with it. It just seemed like an unforgettable place. Especially if you get knocked senseless from a spell. Just seeing the dueling area where very soon she would be dueling reminded Avery of her cousin, Dylan. He had always been passionate about dueling. She had even received the news from him recently that he had been accepted onto the Ilvermony dueling team. Avery couldn't be more proud of him. She was glad he was finally coming out of his shell and beginning to branch out. Maybe his best friend Avery recalled possibly being named Summer was rubbing off on him. Or maybe there was something more. Avery knew there was something up with Dylan and his best friend. Though she also knew he probably didn't realize it. At least not yet. Avery knew just by the way he talked about her over their letters that he was possibly developing unknown feelings for her. Avery smiled. Dylan had been the first person to recognize a blossoming relationship between herself and Mikey when the two of them had just met, and look at where they were now. A happy couple of a little over a month. Now it would be her turn to be their number one fan. Avery snapped out of her daydream and brought herself back to the present. Giving Sere a slight wave, before focusing herself and getting into position. Now all she had to do was wait for Edith to arrive and get situated. Then everything would begin.

Edith entered the room. She felt a bit dizzy; after all, it was only her second duel. She had won her first duel ever, but this did not give her a lot of confidence.

"Umm... hi." she said for the others to acknowledge her presence. Her opponent was Avery Gray, a nice Second Year that Edith didn't know too well, but had agreed to duel in order to practice Edith's skills.

Despite being scared, Edith also felt pretty excited. It was fun, after all, to shoot spells at each other. (Well... Edith's kind of fun). Edith took a single step forward, smiling at Avery.

You can do this! she told herself. Slowly, Edith stretched her arm one way, waiting for any signs of movement or spells on Avery's side. She didn't want to be the first one to attack!
Edith held her wand tighter, all of her knuckles showing.

If she won this, she would have two wins in a row. However, this looked very doubtful; Avery looked about a hundred times more skillful than Edith felt. Is she really waiting for me to attack first? Edith wondered, or is she hoping I'd lose my guard and send a spell suddenly?

Either way, Edith was ready. She knew what to do.

Sere clapped her hands with a comment, "Both duellists start with fire!" This wasn't the first duel she'd moderated where both duellists had kicked off with fire spells. Sere began to ponder the reason behind this rather natural spell-selection behavior. Perhaps it was because these Incendios provided a good damage-over-time effect and this is a good starting point for the next nine-round-left battle. If they successfully hit the target, this advantage would create a privilege in the next round.

Avery impressed Sere. Had she practiced casting spells while flying, thus achieving such accuracy? If so, Sere became even more interested in learning the broom sports in hope of improving her accuracy. "That was Avery with her Incendio Duo! Oh, and now Edith is aflame!" The magic fire began to lit up the edges of her clothes.

Edith, on the other hand, casted the basic version of the Fire-Making Spell. It wasn't as powerful as Avery's, but it was a safer choice than going for a big action and then failing. Wait, but honestly her basic arcane power is pretty good. Sere expected the Ravenclaw to take further, gradually escalating actions after this first round.

The first round went well. Sere folded her arms after signaling both of the duellists to continue to the second round.

Avery couldn't believe it had worked. Incendio Duo was a new spell to her. One she had never actually tried to use before, but she found out quickly that it worked and it surprised her more than anything. She winced as she watched Edith catch fire. Though she didn't have long to check and see if the girl was okay as Incendio hit her. "Ouch!" Avery called out. Her yelp hadn't been loud, but it was most likely loud enough for the two girls to hear. It was Avery's first time experiencing a fire spell on herself, and how did it feel? Well, Avery knew now the reason she had chosen Quidditch to be her sport. Getting hit constantly with spells like this sounded awful. Something she knew she would experience again, but never wished it upon anyone. "You okay? Avery asked as her own robes had stopped flaming, but still left the smell of smoke and singed hair in the air. She winced as she noticed Edith's robes were still on fire. Wow. Her spell had been even more powerful than she had expected. Though a duel meant that there was little time to chat. Avery wasn't fully recovered from Incedio, but now it was time to prepare for her next move. She wasn't sure as to what she was going to do yet, but she did know that she would have to act quickly.

Edith shuddered, blowing on her robes to try put out the fire. They had both decided to do the Incendio spell, however Avery did the more advanced one (Incendio Duo) and therefore had a better effect. Smoke hung in the air, and Edith picked up her wand from the ground, which she had dropped in moment of action, after both their spells had hit. Rubbing her eyes, Edith glanced at Avery wearily. She was sure that she was going to lose; but Edith couldn't really blame herself; after all, this was only her second duel she had had since starting Hogwarts.

As Edith pondered on what to do, she watched Avery's wand carefully, in any need to dodge from a spell about to shoot out - Edith was sure - any second. Edith coughed, blew some smoke away from her face, and quickly wiped her dirty wand against her burnt robe. So... Edith wondered, what should I do now? Is she about to cast a spell... or dodge my spell? Should I attack, or defend myself? She thought, and slowly forced her brain to form a conclusion. I'm ready, she told herself. Perhaps it would be a good move, or... not so much. Whatever happens, you can always give up Edith instructed herself strictly, before glancing quickly at Sere. She was ready. Hopefully.

Ugh, a self-made torture. Sere covered her mouth with her right palm, trying to maintain a no-expression as the Tickling Charm Avery casted, instead of flying towards her opponent, fired back to herself. Sere had a preference for spells, and Rictusempra was not in the list. The reason was that she simply disliked the effects. Being forced to laugh was a nightmare.

Sere also hated a critical failure. It felt humiliating. The combination of nightmare laughter and humiliating failure together with her first experience in duelling, Sere didn't know what was in Avery's mind right now. She could only show her sympathy by murmuring, "That's gonna be fine. You just have to hold it a little bit longer." Whether Avery could hear her or not, she wouldn't be able to respond to Sere in the first place because...

Shifting her gaze from Avery to Edith, Sere gave the Ravenclaw a recognition. Round 2 was the time where fails and misses were commonly happened. This girl -whose robe were still in flame- despite of her own situation, managed to hit Avery with a Tongue-tying Curse. "That was a great one," Sere muttered again, not sure whether Edith could hear her.

"Alright," Sere found both duellists were having some unpleasant conditions; one was engulfed in magical flames and the other was laughing with a strange sound caught in her throat. "Let's quickly move on to the next round..."

Edith winced as she watched Avery being hit by her own curse at the same time as Edith shooting a spell at her. Maybe she shouldn't have been so harsh with the Mimblewimble, tongue-tying curse. Then again, this was a duel.
"You okay?" Edith offered quietly, but she still had her own problems to deal with. Her robe was still on fire, and Edith had no means to put it out; she had not learned Augamenti yet and was panicking. Blowing on the fire didn't help at all, nor did trying to put it out with her wand. What could she do?

But despite her horrible condition, Edith had time to feel sorry for Avery, who was now tongue-tyed, and laughing. Edith's weak Incendio had long since died out, although Avery's fire was still strong. Edith jumped about in the flames, aware of how stupid she looked. If only I could get rid of this fire! Perhaps she had once been taught a spell to put fire out? But, no matter how much she racked her memory, Edith couldn't think of anything that had ever taught her to get out of a situation like this. Perhaps this duel wasn't such a good idea...

Maybe she should have stayed with fire was what ran through Avery's mind as her spell backfired violently upon her. Of course Edith's spell hit at the same time. Leaving her mute and tickled to death. Avery had never thought of herself as ticklish before that moment, but the spell seemed to break through that and leave her rendered useless. Avery sighed though no sound escaped her lips. What else was there to do as she waited for the effects of the spells to wear off? She didn't know what came next for her anyway. She couldn't speak a spell into existence, so what else could she do? That was her predicament. She couldn't believe she thought she could do this and have a chance at winning. She could feel her energy declining quickly and all she could hope was that she could hold on to consciousness enough to keep going. Avery glanced at Edith and thought the girl had said something to her as her lips were moving, but Avery didn't know what she had said. Her mind was occupied with not losing herself with the tickling curse as well as the spell that made her mute that she couldn't understand anything else. At least, for the time being.

Three rounds passed, and both duellists seemed to try their best to knock their opponent out while defending themselves. Avery, that was muted by Mimblewimble, moved here and there as fast as she could. She actively dodged, anticipating any spells coming her way. As a first-timer, Sere would have understood if Avery had tried to cast something despite her condition. As a moderator, she even readied herself to raise her wand, intending to cast Expelliarmus or another similar spell if Avery showed any sign to cast something. However, the girl seemed to have heeded the professor's explanation that improper incantation and pronunciation of a spell could lead to huge consequences, choosing the right action so everything was under control and Sere was able to keep her wand down.

Shifting her gaze to Edith, Sere found the Ravenclaw casting the Green-Sparks Charm. A basic learned in Defense Against the Dark Arts Class, the first lesson for every firstie. Her accuracy was incredible. She was able to hit her target even while Avery was actively dodging. "Another nice shot!" Sere clapped her hands. She recalled her chaotic performance in the last Fall Games and determined to learn something from Edith.

"Alright, next round," the third-year gave another both duellists another signal. She glanced at Avery; Mimblewimble's effects should have come to an end by now and Sere should be able to hear the her laughter. She glanced to Edith; Incendio's flame had also gone out eventually. "start!"
