The Calledula Rams were clearly feeling behind. Multiple attacks to the front runner Verity ensued, but whether by luck or skill, the young Hufflepuff emerged unscathed. Luckily for Verity, Rosaline couldn’t quite get the out words right for her spell. She was however hit by Avery’s tarantellgra. The girl started to dance involuntarily, her legs and arms twitching to a beat that only she could hear. Matilde was sure she was going to kick herself off, but the young witch managed to hold on to her broom.

Pecival finally seemed to snap out of whatever distraction he’d been under. The boy quickly started to catch up to the rest of the players. Further down the track, thinks were getting… sticky. “Three more of our racers “fall” to the pigeons. At least Althea and Mamori didn’t get the poop in their eyes. Still, I don’t know about their chances of an alley-oop.” Matilde summarized. And yet again, "Verity Engels remains in the lead, her teammate Mamori Anezaki not far behind."

Hanging back had had it's advantages, but it was time to get back into the fray. The racers, both friend and foe, grew smaller in the distance with every passing second. And as they did, she knew she'd become more ineffective the longer she hung out here by the starting line. At least she wasn't the only one as she nodded at the girl from the Drowned Palace who seemed to be having trouble casting. That was a feeling Maisie knew well as she bit her lip.

Then, she swung her leg around her broom and leaned into the ground to push off. It actually was kind of nice to have a moment to herself to resettle as she took off from the ground. In contrast, it always seemed like on the duelling piste, there was never a moment like that. It was always go, go, go. Or go, get blindfolded, go. Or go, a teammate fell down, go. Pick any comic tragedy and it could slot easily onto her time on the piste.

Here, it was quiet.

Easy.

It could have been easy to stay at rest, and run away from sports all together. But her team needed her, and for perhaps the first time, they had a fighting chance.

The Deep End unofficial broom race
november 20th, 2025
morning

Granted, Vera was not strong in the slightest. If anything required heavy lifting, her parents would carry it for her if not one of the staff in their house. The heaviest thing she had to carry would maybe be her school bag, and then her suitcases when she boarded the Hogwarts Express. But since learning the Levitation Charm, living nearer to the basements in Hufflepuff, and being a duellist, there was very little need to develop muscles.

This was a terrible thing, of course, because now Vera was having to claw her way out of the vines that she'd become prey to. The bird poop on her eyes was also not of any help at all. If anything, it made her feel gross.

Her teammate, it seemed, heard her thoughts because her sight eventually cleared. Vera would have to ask later what the spell was so that she could use it next time. For now, she made one last push at the vines, not giving herself a second to comprehend the events that came soon after as she sped off yet again.

Vera turned her head slightly to yell "Thank you!" at Mamori, then continued for a few moments more. It was a bit disorienting, having her sight back, even if it was only a few minutes of being poop-eyed. She looked ahead at the track.

Just a little bit more...

Avery had done it. She had successfully cast Tarantallegra on the girl from the other team. Though she was shocked to see the girl hold on and not fall off her broom. That was a feat that Avery admired. She wasn't sure if even she could stay on her broom if she were hit with the spell. Avery then snapped her head back into the game. Now was not the time for daydreaming and observing what was happening. She had to cross the finish line for her team.

Avery then focused on the course before her. She wasn't sure what was to come, but she had the feeling that it wouldn't be easy. Nothing was easy in the wizarding world. Especially when it came to broom games with spells and potions flying all around you. Avery didn't know how people actually enjoyed playing the official broom racing game. It was all too much for her to handle.

Though now Avery could brag to her cousin, Dylan, that she had done every sport Hogwarts had to offer. Her favorite of all of them was her chosen sport, Quidditch. She had played a vast array of roles for Quidditch whether official or unofficial, but her favorite role that rose above everything else was Seeker. She was still proud to say she was the backup Seeker for Gryffindor. Even if she wasn't the greatest at it yet.

The Deep End unofficial broom race
Hi everyone,

There were some significant edits needed for this round so I wanted to let everyone know so you will be able to strategize effectively. I only added things that changed significantly; however, I included a full list in the Round 3 post.
Rosaline and Avery’s spells were out of range, so these actions are void
Effect: tarantellegra at Verity is no longer in effect

Forgot to add broom stats for Althea, so Mamori is actually blatched and KOB in unit 8. This was also done in round 2, so I added back HP for missed trees in round 2
Effect: Mamori is KOB

The pigeons should have only targeted 2 racers since there were 3 racers according to the rules
Effect: Althea is not pooped, suffers no effects
Thanks for your patience!

The Deep End unofficial broom race
When Zephyr reached another section, his arms were already sore. The trees were too close for comfort, their branches even tried scraping past trying to grab him. He slowed just enough to balance himself, breathing hard through his nose. That was when he saw Aodhan. The guy came into view fast, way more confident on his broom than he felt on his best day. For a second, he just stared, then his brain finally caught up. “AODHAN!” he shouted, “HEY—ALLY-OOP!” He would know what he’s talking about not even caring about how ridiculous he probably sounded. There was no time for that. He leaned his broom closer, one hand tight on the handle, the other reaching out as far as he could. His heart was pounding so hard he thought it might knock him off balance. “Grab my hand!!!” (With Aodhan’s permission) Don’t mess this up. Don’t drop him. Please don’t drop him. As soon as their arms connected, he shifted his weight, just like Vera had explained earlier. He counted in his head without meaning to. One… two—NOW. He pulled, twisted, and threw with everything he had. His shoulders screamed in protest, but he didn’t let go and instead shoved using his whole body, giving Aodhan a strong push forward and upward. “GO!” Zephyr yelled after him, laughing and shaking, the force of the move sent him imbalance on his seat, and he was able to right himself. His broom moved dangerously before he corrected it, heart racing again. Merlin, that was terrifying! Watching Aodhan surge ahead gave him pride mixed with relief. For him, it was also important just as much as crossing the finish line.

After remounting his broom, Aodhan was more than prepared to get back into the race.

With his tongue sticking out in concentration, he leaned forward and kicked off into the air, zooming as fast as he possibly could. Wind whipped past his ears and ruffled his hair as he crossed the very first obstacle. Honestly, it was easy enough. Though, he expected nothing less for someone of his flying expertise.

It was when he arrived at a section of the track covered in trees that something was different—a booming call of his name that passed through the canopy. With a turn of his head, he noticed the source was one of his teammates, reaching their hand out towards him and screaming about... alley-oops? Oh! Like he often saw people do in quidditch, then? This guy had to have been pretty strong to offer that up so confidently.

So Aodhan, curious and excited by the prospect of them pulling it off, threw himself right into the other's direction at max speed. And when their hands actually met, he felt as if they were the stars of an action film. The young Gryffindor didn't even have to do much, nothing beyond trusting his teammate to carry his weight and propel him to victory, which the boy did without a hitch.

"WOOOAHHHHH!" he screeched upon getting sent flying, his voice cracking with the force of his shout. It was almost hard to control, his speed rising to levels he simply hadn't expected, levels he never could have experienced on his lonesome. But it was worth it; in little to no time at all, he'd already caught up to the other racers without a single scratch.

"That was freakin' awesome!" he breathed, eyes sparkling and heart pounding from all the adrenaline. If this was how racing went most of the time, he was seriously missing out.

After swallowing his irritation at the fact that his earlier provocation got no response at all, Mamori pressed onward only to witness a pigeon's projectile landing directly on @Verity Engels's eye. That sharp intake of breath of his could have been sympathy for the inevitable eye inflammation, or simply a reaction of disgust at the smell that was about to unfold. Either way, he found himself muttering "Scourgify" to assist their vine-entangled captain, because obviously, this team would fall apart without his intervention.

"Don't let a little bird drama cost you that number one spot," he shouted back to Vera's yelled thanks after watching her break free. However, delivering such sage advice did momentarily distract him, resulting in a double disaster whereby he got his own shower of aerial assault while passing through the pigeon-infested unit and also got blatched down by some lanky upperclassman who'd seized the chance.

Upon landing, Mamori expressed his artistic critique with a two-handed middle finger salute, one dedicated to the pigeons with apparent sphincter control issues and the other to his opportunistic opponent (@Althea Valeden). Watching another competitor arrive with similar eye decorations only confirmed his conspiracy theory that these pigeons were Hogwarts' latest weaponized project for ruining everyone's day. Their aim was far too good to be natural.

Shaking off the throbbing pain in her shoulder from an unpleasant time in the passageway, Althea hissed as she regained her composure and sped forward on her broom. The race track was a moderated one meant to be shorter, more compact to suit an informal match for beginners, meaning that the finish line was not too far from here. Squinting, the brunette saw a glimpse of Verity Engels up ahead on the track, but no other opponent. Glancing around her vicinity, she spotted Rosaline, who had done well to hang on to her broom and keep at this pace despite the obstacles and their opponents. However, the issue came when she scanned further. In particular, an issue so blindingly bright pink that it made Althea blink twice just looking at it. She forgot if she ever heard of his name, but the opponent's flying prowess was undeniable from their earlier performance down on the track. She stared in confusion as the pink-haired boy cast a spell to cleanse Verity's eyes of... wait-

The distinct, shrill coos of pigeons reached her. She tore her eyes away from the boy, immediately looking forward. "Oh my-" The Hufflepuff immediately slammed her broom down, barely diving beneath the flock of birds and maneuvering through the feathery wall, wincing as indignant noises and wet splattering sounds were heard around her. She tried to reach for her wand when she spotted Rosaline's eyes being a victim of the earlier bombardment, but watched as their pink-haired opponent went unscathed. Althea clenched her jaw. Better safe than sorry. Gripping her broom, she waited for the opportune moment when the boy was distracted- There. Althea swerved, jabbing her shoulder into the boy with as much force as she could without dislocating her joints. The relief of the following tumbling sound was outweighed by embarrassment when she saw two vulgar gestures as she passed. Competition really does bring out the worst in people. She owed her juniors a goody bag.
