Dearest Mirada,
How are you?
We are extremely sorry to say that you unfortunately won’t be able to come home for Christmas.
Your cousin, Alana, has sadly broken her leg, and, as your aunt is away for work, and your Uncle is extremely busy currently, we have had to go up to Newcastle to look after her.
This means that we aren’t able to collect you from Kings Cross, and, even if we could, there is no space for you to stay at the house.
We are so very sorry, but we know that you are brave enough to spend Christmas at Hogwarts, a special opportunity, that we are very jealous of!
We will send you your presents by owl post closer to the date, and hope you have a wonderful end of term, and exciting lead up to Christmas!

I am so, so, so sorry that you won’t be able to go home for Christmas, all because of me!
As I know how curious you are, and you will probably ask this in your next letter, I broke my leg doing the school pantomime, where I fell off the stage while doing a pirouette.
Your mum and dad told me to tell you that Socks is doing well still, and is just as energetic as always. Their words, not mine!
Again, I’m really sorry about preventing you from coming home, and I hope that we will get to meet up again during the summer, for your birthday!

Dearest Mum, Dad, Alana, Uncle Max, and (if she gets back in time for Christmas) Aunt Louise,
I am fine, thank you. How are all of you?
My lessons have been going well this term - I’ve got full marks in almost all of my homework. Please stop rolling your eyes Alana, you know lessons are important to me. How did I know you were rolling your eyes, you ask - I know you far too well, A.
It is absolutely freezing here - the heating system never works.
I’ve signed up for a sporting team, but I’m currently on the waitlist. Also, I’ve been doing a secret Santa, but I can’t tell you who I’ve got!
I’ve made a few more friends here, and I’m trying to not be as shy - it’s not really working.
I’m sad I can’t be at home for Christmas - it just won’t be the same here, without the burnt stuffing, and broken Yorkshire puddings! I doubt you’re actually jealous of me - it’s freezing, and all my friends are going back home.
But, I don’t want to ruin your Christmas spirit, so I’m going to stop writing, and I just want to say that I hope you have a lovely Christmas time.
