At least this time there had been a letter.

Ruka would have spent his day obsessively counting steps and staring at his dad's picture all day had it not been for the letter, because today marked the second day in a row that he hadn't seen Jack around at all, and a part of him had expected the Slytherin to run from him again, even if it had only been a few short days since they had made up.

Granted, the letter had been short and vague, but it had given Ruka the rough idea that Jack had to be suffering from some form of cold or flu, and wouldn't be around for a few days; it had been enough to calm Ruka's nerves to a level where he felt sort of comfortable going to the Great Hall after his last class to at least join lunch by himself.

He had placed himself at an empty spot on the table, as far away as possible from the next Gryffindor, as to make sure he wouldn't invite conversation; He already got frequently pulled into social activities by Alan, and he really didn't need to put himself into them when he was able to enjoy some alone time instead. Blissfully enough, there was nobody to his left, nobody to his right, and nobody in front of him, so Ruka had taken up all the space around him by filling various plates with food and watching bemusedly as new rations appeared in the bowls whenever he emptied one without actually eating anything.

There had to have been around ten plates around him, all of them loaded with delicious smelling meals, but Ruka wasn't tempted by them at all; they only really made his stomach churn uncomfortably, and since he had already had a bowl of porridge in the morning, he felt like skipping this one meal was at least sort of justified.

Once he got bored watching the food bowls magically fill up over and over again, he sighed a little, moving a hand to the flame shaped pendant dangling from his necklace to give it a light squeeze.

It made him feel calmer, somehow.

With a small sigh he put his elbows on the table and let his gaze drift across the mess he had built around himself, strangely satisfied with the table's state of disarray.

If he was already joining mealtimes without being hungry, he figured he could at least make it a tiny bit fun for himself.

After her confrontation with the slytherin boy in the Great Hall she had stopped approaching random people in the Great Hall. Her mind was still reeling over the fact that people could despise friendship that much. Her friendship bracelet event the week before had refreshed her however, making her remember that there are people that want to make friends with her and others. Sometimes she had to remember to stick to her guns. Especially what her parents would always tell her when she felt like she was fading from who she believed she was.
'Little Willow, you are a beautiful sproutling. But to grow strong and stand tall you have to remember who you are and what you stand for. Right now you're flowing in the wind, but remember which way you truly bend.'

She missed her family dearly, especially since there were so many things at Hogwarts pulling her back and forth. As she walked into the familiar Great Hall, she was about to beeline towards her usual group at the Hufflepuff table. Until she saw a familiar face that was at her friendship bracelet making event. She started to walk towards him but hesitated. Maybe she should restrain herself. But he looked... she couldn't tell. But he didn't look happy either. She was at a full stop in the front of the Great Hall, she looked weird.

She finally shook herself out of it and approached him, sitting herself right down in front of him. She never waited for invitations to join others. Maybe that's here she went wrong in comforting people she didn't ask for permission. But she lived by the fact that it's better to ask for forgiveness rather than permission. "Hey friend! Ruka was it? How are you doing?" She assumed the food in front of him was his, so she stretched and grabbed a bowl of some kind of soup that was in the middle of the table next to them.

She noticed that he wasn't wearing any of the friendship bracelets that were at the event that day. Her face faltered a bit her smile falling from her face for less than a second, getting that aching feeling in her heart that was all too familiar from her hometown. Often times people who take her bracelets and they would mysteriously disappear or end up in the trash. She hoped that he just forgot it.

Ruka had been staring at the food in front of him for a while, eyes glazed over, and unwilling to touch any of it beyond maybe moving some plates around to give himself some more space on the table. He had rolled up the sleeves of his cloak to prevent them from brushing over any sauces and food as he moved things around a little bit, and he was just about reach for a goblet of pumpkin juice - the only thing he could really still stomach these days - when he heard a vaguely familiar voice close by.

The next thing he knew, there was a girl in front of him.

A girl who was definitely at the wrong House Table, as he had seen her among the Hufflepuffs not too long ago, when Alan had dragged him out to join that Hide and Seek game with him. He remembered her blonde hair and her sunny smile, and he remembered the mess of thread that had been scattered on her table that day, but what he really remembered the most, was the fact that she had talked about Flash as a close friend of her's.

Now, Ruka didn't usually like to judge people by whom they acquainted themselves with, but in this case his mind immediately jumped into a defensive mode he just couldn't suppress.

"Willow," he said, only a light question in his words. He was quite sure he remembered the girl's name correctly, so he didn't need to ask for reassurance. "What brings you this far away from your table?" He forced a smile onto his face as he looked at her, watching as she grabbed for a bowl of food like she had the purest intention of spending her lunch with him.

He hadn't missed the fact that she had called him a friend, despite the fact that they had barely communicated the last time they'd seen each other, and that alone made him draw some conclusions as to why she might be getting along well with the Flash Ruka had shortly gotten to know.
Willow was clearly in dire need of positive connections with people, sought friendship like a bee on a quest for the most beautiful flower, and Flash - as he had portrayed himself to Ruka - was so perfectly willing to offer his

Ruka momentarily found himself wondering what price Flash would have this innocent girl pay for his friendship in the end.

With a sigh he shook himself off that thought. It wasn't his problem who Willow chose to befriend, and he shouldn't let it take up any of his care.

"Did you come to make some more friendship bracelets? Because, I'm sorry, but as you can see, my table is pretty full." His voice held a hint of aversion to the mere thought of making another one of those bracelets, but he wasn't sure Willow would pick up on it; He was still carrying the one he'd made that day around in his pocket, safely tucked away in the inside of his cloak where he would most likely never need to dig it out of again.

Willow quickly dug into her soup, her stomach feeling more empty than it did as she realized just how hungry she was. She really only had tea in the morning since she would go on morning walks with Flash and then go back to her room before class. She wasn't really a breakfast person and everyday forgot how hungry she would get around lunchtime. "Well, you know we can eat apart from our houst tables. We're not tied to them." She turned around to her Hufflepuff table and gave a small wave which was returned. "And you looked alone so I wanted to provide you some company." She looked at the next Gryffindor which was a fair bit away from where they currently sat. "I couldn't tell what you were feeling, but you didn't look happy at all. Even surrounded by a massive amount of food." As she finished the bowl of soup, it magically refilled much to her enjoyment.

"And no, I'm not here to make friendship bracelets. Although!" She paused and pulled a ridiculous amount of friendship bracelets out of her pocket. "I do have some with me if you want another one!" She made sure her pockets were always stocked and would always make two or three before she went to bed at night. This wasn't even a quarter of the amount she had piled in her room. Her parents would send her a bunch of yarn every month to keep up her hobby.

"I always have them with me, because you never know when you'll make a friend. I honestly didn't expect to make so many in the Great Hall last week!" The brightness in her heart returned, remembering how lovely it was. "Although, you didn't seem to excited to be there despite being there with someone that I assumed was your friend?" She looked up at him with an eyebrow raised. She barely knew anything about the boy in front of her except that his name is Ruka, he's a Gryffindor, didn't want to play hide and seek, and wasn't a fan of friendship bracelets. "The bracelets are the easiest sign of having a friend close to you!"

She held up her left arm, revealing a unique bracelet of green, blue, and yellow. "This is one I have with my friend Flash! We have matching ones, it's a nice way to be reminded that I'm not alone when I'm having a bad day." She fiddled with it for a moment, a warm endearing look coming over her face. "It's nice to be reminded of the people you have around you even if they're not nearby, don't 'cha think?" She smiled up at him, surely he had people around him. Although, after an interaction she had with someone else that perception was changing. She wanted to be that person that people could have around them when they had no one else.

Ruka watched wearily as Willow lifted a hand to wave at her peers at the Hufflepuff table, and for a second he was tempted to ask her why she wasn't joining them over there instead of bothering him like this, but he bit his tongue.

No need to get unpleasant.

Her observation that he had looked alone almost made him roll his eyes, a small smirk pulling at the corners of his lips. So she had realised that he was keeping his distance from people and yet had decided to come over and disrupt his solitude. What a curious way to respond to someone who was clearly trying to keep his distance.

"I'm not really hungry," he pointed out as she talked about all the food surrounding him. Really, the sight and smell of all these edibles just made him feel nauseous, his stomach cramping uncomfortably at the thought of actually swallowing any of it. No, breakfast had filled him up more than enough.

A small sigh of relief escaped him when Willow said that she wasn't here to make friendship bracelets, but just a second later his eyebrows raised incredulously as she pulled out a whole heap of ready-made friendship bracelets. His eyes were drained on the bracelets for a second, and he had to laugh internally at the thought of what Jack might look like and say at the sight of this ridiculous amount of bracelets that symbolised what the Slytherin possibly considered to be human kind's biggest weakness.

Willow was a walking, talking Hufflepuff cliche.

"Thanks," he said with a little snort, trying at least partially to hide how incredibly ludicrous he found Willow's hobby to really be. "But I don't even know what to do with the one I made last time, so I'll hold off on getting even more for now." He turned away lightly to roll his eyes without Willow noticing before turning back to the other girl with a fragile smile. He was trying hard to keep up a vaguely friendly facade because Willow had clearly not had any bad intentions in coming over here, but her happiness was really distracting him from his own emotional turmoil, and he really wasn't sure how to deal with that.

At Willow's comment about him not having been too happy about being there that day during Hide and Seek, he just lightly shrugged his shoulders. "I guess he'd call us that," he confirmed vaguely, thoughts drifting to Alan. The older Gryffindor was quick to make friends, and would probably be calling Ruka one as well, but Ruka himself couldn't really remember the last time he had genuinely referred to someone as a friend.

Before he could really elaborate on the subject, Willow had already continued talking, excitedly showing off her own bracelet to him as she continued chitchatting as if her life depended on it.
It was then that Ruka's attention finally got caught by the other girl as she brought up Flash's name again. She as talking with so much enthusiasm that, for a second, Ruka doubted she meant the same person that Ruka had encountered not too long ago, but Flash was such a particular and potentially fake name, the young Gryffindor doubted he shared it with anybody else.

With a bitter laugh, Ruka shook his head. "Ah, yeah, nothing to brighten a bad day than the thought of a Viper waiting for you to take it out of its nest so it can bite your face off." He rolled his eyes without trying to hide it this time, leaning back a little bit, arms crossed in front of his chest as he looked at Willow. "I'm sure you guys share an amazing, mutually beneficial friendship." He didn't elaborate further than that, felt he had already spilled too much of his own distrust towards Flash to someone who clearly held the Slytherin in high regards.

It was a stupid thing to do.

"And I'm glad your matching bracelets make you forget that he probably has an invisible leash tied around yours."

Stop, now.

Ruka sighed heavily and shook his head. Maybe he was wrong, maybe he was talking smack about someone who was a genuine friend to Willow, but after how Flash had tried to use Ruka's own fragile mental state before, after hearing the Slytherin voice his desperation to the words of "Ruka, if I didn't act like this no one would like me" the Gryffindor had little to no inclination to believe that Flash even knew how to lead a genuine friendship.

"Sorry," he added quietly, a few seconds later, averting his eyes for a moment. "It's your business who you share your bracelets with, not mine."

She was confused as to someone could not be eating all of the delicious food around them, but if he was having a bad day which it seemed like it made sense. "I don't eat breakfast so this is when I eat the most food. Especially since it's basically like an unlimited buffet everyday. It's amazing! This could cure world hunger, but I suppose we have to stay hidden from muggles." She shook her head, "It honestly doesn't make sense to me."

With his statement she tucked the bracelets away back in her pocket with a shrug, "I literally always have them with me so if you ever need one or more just let me know! I can also make any with any kind of combination, free of charge." The idea of charging for the hours she spent making these bracelets had crossed her mind, but it felt greedy and wrong to charge for friendship. Friendship was a gift, not a product.

Suddenly the air changed as Ruka began to talk about Flash. Her energy changed with it, but was more confused than anything. The way he was talking about Flash was so mean, when Flash had been nothing but kind and caring for her. He broke into a greenhouse with her just because she was upset about it, and then he stayed. He didn't have to do that. Slytherins sometimes did have a bad reputation, but she couldn't imagine thinking of Flash like this. The people she had met in the Great Hall recently were just so... mean sometimes. She immediately went on the defensive for the person she called her brother.

"The only invisible leash attached to this bracelet is the connection that we have. A-And it's not even a leash! It's a string of fate. That's my brother that you're talking about like that, so I'd appreciate it if you weren't so mean. He is one of the kindest and most caring people I've ever met. I don't know who you've met but that couldn't have been my Flash." Her face was turning red as she got frustrated with how Ruka was portraying someone that she held so close to her heart. "He would never hurt me, and it is a mutually beneficial relationship. He would do anything to protect me and I would do the same for him. He's my best friend." Her blood boiled more as Ruka rolled his eyes. "Why are people so mean sometimes. What could he have even done to you? He wouldn't hurt a fly." She paused, catching her breath as she defended Flash rapid fire. "You obviously don't know Flash like I do, and I highly recommend getting to know him more because you don't know anything about him."

Ruka tried really hard to keep that smile on his face and not make Willow feel like she was a burden, but it was getting increasingly more difficult with every word she said. He didn't want to know about her own eating habits, didn't really care about her thoughts on world hunger, but he tried to entertain it anyway.

"Even if we didn't need to hide from Muggles, I'm pretty sure even Hogwarts' food resources are limited. If they distributed it to every starving person out there, there probably wouldn't be enough to feed the whole student body anymore. It's an ethical dilemma; Who deserves the food more, then?" He shrugged lightly, not really caring for her answer as he reached for a fork and stabbed it into a piece of meat just to leave it there, standing upright.

He pursed his lips and nodded noncommittally, when she offered him to just let her know should he ever need any more bracelets. Truth of the matter was that there was only one person he'd ever consider giving something as sentimental as that to, and said person would probably rather jump off the Astronomy Tower than accept that kind of gift.

When the topic changed and the tension began to thicken, Ruka kept his eyes on Willow, watching her every reaction with a cool kind of amusement as she struggled to defend Flash from his words.
"You called it a leash too," he pointed out with a little chuckle, tilting his head to the side as he let her finish her tirade of arguments for why his words were untrue, ranging from You must talk about someone else to You don't know him like I do. "Which one is it, then?" he asked, eyebrows raised. He almost felt like laughing at how incredibly oblivious Willow was to those shiny masks Flash presented to the world like he was the main event at a Carnival Parade. "I'm talking about a different Flash, or I just don't know him like you do? Seems like you're a little confused there." He snorted ungracefully, shaking his head at the Hufflepuff girl.

He wondered, for a second, who else she had met that she considered mean, because as far as Ruka could tell, this girl seemed to think of everyone as a friend unless they gave her a reason not to. Of course, Flash, who seemed to cling so desperately to his need to feel accepted and valued would never give someone like this sweet, naive girl a reason to dislike him.

"I know enough about him to stay away from that fake persona of his," he told Willow sincerely, eyebrows knitted together for a moment. "I know he uses people for his personal gain, and I know this whole Nice Guy shtick is nothing but an act." With a little shrug he actually reached out for a small potato wedge and ate it. It immediately felt heavy in his otherwise practically stomach, and he regretted it instantly. "But by all means, if he's such a great friend I really hope you two will be very happy together. I'll be curious to see how long it takes for this Happy Family picture he's drawn for the two of you to inevitably break apart."

Suddenly she didn't want food, sour emotions usually turned her stomach sour as well. She admittedly didn't know enough about magic or world hunger to offer further opinion on the situation. "I still don't think we should hide from muggles. There are people like me who have been practicing a different type of witchcraft all of my life. I could've just started with this, rather than questioning everything about who I am now." It was something she'd given a lot of thought, was her type of green witchery invalid now that she was practicing this? Would she eventually lose touch with her type of magic later down the road as this magic got more complicated? Her home magic was something so intertwined with who she is, imagining that part of herself broke her heart. So she tried not to think about it.

She was growing increasingly frustrated with the person that sat before her. He seemed a little standoffish before, but she couldn't have imagined the conversation turning into this. He was getting into specifics. She was angry! Of course she was going to mess up her words. Who was he to pick out how she spoke, she had never been in a physical fight but this was the closest she had felt like getting into one as her frustration continued to bubble and bubble up through her being. She was a hot-headed person, when someone got on her bad side she was ready to fight until her last breath. "It's not a leash! It's a sign that we're family now. Who are you to determine whether or not you know the real him. His kindness is too real for me to ever believe that it's not real." She laughed at the thought of it, "I am way too annoying to pretend to be nice to for the benefit of himself! If this was an act he would've dropped me a long time ago. He wouldn't have snuck into a greenhouse with me, he wouldn't continue to walk with me every morning if this was an act. If it is, he should get an Oscar!"

As Ruka continued talking she tried to calm herself down, this was just one person's opinion of Flash she didn't have to take it so intense. But she felt like she had to defend him after all that Flash had done for her. She laughed at the thought of him being her friend as an act. "I am way too annoying to pretend to be nice to for the benefit of himself! If this was an act he would've dropped me a long time ago. He wouldn't have snuck into a greenhouse with me, he wouldn't continue to walk with me every morning if this was an act. If it is, he should get an Oscar! This won't break because we're stronger together rather than apart." She stood up angrily, feeling like she needed to remove herself from the situation before it got too intense, students were already glancing over at her yelling. "I don't know what he's done to you, but it can't have been anything too bad to cause you to act like that."

Ruka had expected it, so he gave a small, patronising smile as Willow ceased the conversation about food to instead rant on about how there were people who were practicing a different kind of witchcraft, and wouldn't have needed to branch out like that, had they known about the magical world from the start.
"A different type of witchcraft?" he asked, his interest genuinely peaked. He had never really thought of the fact that there may have been more than just the type they were being taught to practice at Hogwarts, and he was actually curious to know what Willow was talking about exactly.

"Just because we shouldn't have to, doesn't mean it isn't the safest option," he pointed out, leaning back a little bit as he mustered Willow with a critical gaze. "People have a tendency to hunt and destroy things they can't understand or imitate. If they knew of us, Hogwarts would go up in flames within a week." He shrugged like it didn't matter because, truthfully, it didn't. Muggles didn't know of their existence and it was going to stay that way, regardless of the outcome of this conversation.

Anyway, their conversation turned into something much more entertaining in a short time, making Ruka's face light up a little with increasing interest. It seemed this girl really was so blinded by Flash that she couldn't see the fake smiles and hear the cold, hallow words he spoke. Was this what Flash had meant when he'd said nobody would like him if he was just himself? Did most people really enjoy this sickening Nice Guy act?

Ruka shuddered just at the thought, tilting his head as he stared at Willow in disbelief while she talked. "Who are you to say you know the real him?" he countered with an empty laugh, something akin to pity in his eyes. He almost felt sorry for this poor deluded girl. "You know what an act is, don't you? It's supposed to look real. He's feeding you all those nice words and doing all those nice things for you, but what does he really do it for? The sake of your friendship? You just said yourself you're annoying, so why would he stick around for that?" He shook his head, eyes turning to fire as he talked himself into a rage.

All he could think of in this moment was Flash's face as he'd dragged Ruka into that storage room, how he'd threatened to rat him out to Jack and a teacher before switching out his act and asking him to come for a walk with him. He could still hear his voice as he finally admitted to wanting to use Ruka's fragile state to gather information about Jack, and it made something burn inside him, something that made him want to hurt Flash's friend the same way Flash might have planned on hurting Ruka's... companion.

"I'll tell you why. He's sticking around for the validation that his act is working on someone. He's sticking around for his desperate need for validation, because he's so fragile and insecure on the inside that he thinks he needs to manipulate people into associating with him. You're nothing but a nice little ego boost, and sooner or later he'll have burned you up and toss you away." He didn't even notice, but he had stood up from his seat to lean over the table, probably getting a little uncomfortably close to the girl in front of him. Without a second thought he grabbed for her wrist, laying bare the friendship bracelet she had so proudly presented earlier on. "And if I'm even vaguely right about him, I'm sure you'll think of me when you won't be wearing that stupid thing anymore by the end of next week."

Content Warning - Willow being held down and burned lightly is described within this post.
For the first time, it seemed, Ruka finally mentioned something that she could get excited about. "I practice Green Witchery at my home. This means we work with the elements, herbs, plants, nature, et cetera. My parents describe it as altering the energy of the universe to fit what we would like to happen. Usually promoting well-being, happiness, good health, all that type of stuff is what my family does. I could always show you a spell if you're interested at any point." She smiled up at him, but it didn't quite reach her eyes because of the exhaustion from this conversation.

She figured at this point she'd just drop the argument about merging wizards and muggles. She didn't have nearly enough information to make a good enough argument. She was still learning, especially in History of Magic. "You win this one for now. You obviously have more brains about the relationships between witches and wizards. I just feel like we can't hide forever. I wouldn't want to hide forever." She had done a lot of hiding in her life. Hiding from schoolmates that would constantly belittle her, hiding from her family when things had gone bad, hiding from herself for a time not knowing who she was. She was tired of hiding so much of her. If this Willow had come back home, her family and hometown might not recognize her. She was freer, happier, more willing to say what she thought and felt than before. It was exhilarating this type of freedom.

But then there were people like Ruka. Who ripped her out of the castle and put her back into her small town. Her close-minded, awful, vicious town. Her anger was rampant, but she felt like she couldn't escape because he kept talking. There was a part of her that couldn't leave because she wanted to hear him out and have his piece heard, even if she wasn't being heard. Her mind was reeling, the image he was painting of Flash didn't fit in. It didn't make sense. This wasn't who Flash was. Was it? What if Ruka was telling the truth, a warning to flee now before she found out the truth.

She just couldn't believe it. There was a new cold fire raging inside Ruka, and she didn't know how to deal with it. This was new, when people who tease her and bully her at home it was never like this. She felt her heart to accelerate and her breathing became more shallow as he kept ranting on. She was shaking her head as he spoke, stuttering small sentences of; "No, he wouldn't" or "He's not like that." Her mind couldn't put together more words than that. Had Flash sugarcoated her with words of praise and the fantasy of being liked? Had she fallen for it? She didn't know, she couldn't tell especially not like this.

Ruka had suddenly stood up, and Willow tried to back away but her legs were trapped in by the bench and she suddenly froze. She never would freeze, but it had been months since something like this happened. Her instincts had left her when she needed them the most.

Then he grabbed her.

Suddenly she was back home. The boys in her class holding her down after class. Teasing, screeching voices, "We're going to burn the witch." Chanting. Endless chanting. They were in the forest that separated herself from being home. They had matches, how did they get matches? Bringing them close to her skin, burning her up and down her arm. Not enough to leave any scars, but she remembered. She would always remember. Tears were streaking down her face. They had muffled her mouth so her screams couldn't be heard. It was her fault. If she wasn't a witch they wouldn't be doing this. If she was just normal, she would be fine. But she wasn't. She was always going to be the weird witch, the dumb witch, the naive witch.

She would always be the lowest, which is why whenever someone showed her an ounce of kindness, she ran with it. She never knew when she would be able to feel the luxury of kindness shown to her again, so she would take it where she could. Flash not being the person that spoiled her with that luxury and being like the others would destroy her. Ruka was lying. He had to be.

Then in an instant she was back at Hogwarts, but he was still holding on to her. Without thinking about it she raised her right arm and swung it to hit him in his left cheek and continued to follow through with as much force as possible. She wanted to be let go. She wanted him to get away from her. If he were to let go, she would collapse on the bench. Sobs racking her body as she couldn't get the images out of her head combined with the confusion about who Flash really was. Her voice cracked as she spoke, but it was angry. "Please. Just shut up." There was her own cold fire in her eyes, but hers was sad and lonely as she watched Ruka deal with the first punch she had ever thrown.
