For the International Women's Day errand.
@Fyriel Starlingword @Flash Holmwood
International Women's Day. A day, that had never had much value in Opeila's life, it was never even mentioned at home. In primary school she had sometimes heard of it.
She would have probably not paid any attention to it this year either, if she hadn't heard of the errand. It seemed like a good thing, creating something to show girls that you appreciate them.
She had thought of writing some cards to others and maybe placing them in front of their dorms. Of course, she could only do this in house Slytherin, but then she'd just owl the other girls.
Opeila had owled her newest friend Flash and asked him if he'd be interested to help her with the cards and also written a little note that she wanted to put on a wall, that invited others to also join her in the empty classroom on the second floor. She had lost that note somewhere now, it must have fallen out of her pocket. If someone found it, that person was most welcome to join her, otherwise it would just be lost.
Opeila was on her way to the classroom now, carrying a bag with all kind of paper and other material.
When she arrived, she pushed a few of the tables together- Now she wished that she had already learned the levitation charm- and put the bag on them. She put paper in different colours, scissors and coloured pens on the table, all things that her grandmother had sent her, when Opeila had sent her an owl, telling her that she didn't want to ignore this day this year. She could almost feel her grandmother's excitement when she got her answer, together with a box of material. Opeila then had made a list, with all the girl's names, she could think of. Some of them she knew, some of them were names that she remembered from the sorting.
Now she'd wait. She hoped that at least Flash would show up.

Flash had been delighted to receive word from Opeila. When he had approached her by chance in the Great Hall, hoping to get her to open up, he hadn’t originally expected for her to be so forthcoming. She was neither distant nor overbearing, she instead seemed to simply enjoy being in the presence of someone with good manners. He couldn’t complain, she had already proven that she was willing to defend his honor against people that spoke badly of him-- something he held close to his heart with pride. Because of that, he didn't even think twice about helping her when she wanted it.
He knew from experience that she was fond of errands, and treasured house points, but the day had a secondary significance as well. Given that, well, she was a girl. When he got the invitation to help her make some cards to give to other girls, he couldn’t help but feel like she somehow knew what a great benefit she was to him. Handing out heartfelt cards declaring his respect for all the women of the castle… it was an excellent use of his time. The looks on their faces when they read the card would make the day a delight, no doubt.
He did intend to mostly take a support role, however. Being that he was not a girl, his input could only carry so much weight. He figured if anything, Opeila probably wanted him there to help push things forward. He was often called in for aid whenever one of his acquaintances needed someone to help them make decisions. Flash was a lover of art and the written word, so his taste was refined. He felt confident in his aesthetic choices, Opeila must have noticed.
When he entered the room, he was glad to see Opeila already there, with loads of crafts as well.
”Good afternoon, Opeila.” Flash smiled broadly, announcing himself. ”Flash here, at your service.”

When Fyriel was on her way to class she found a lost note on the floor. She picked it up and read what it was. It was an invitation to come help make cards and posters for International Women’s Day. Fyriel wasn’t the most social bird but she loved to craft and make others happy. It sounded like a nice idea to let girls and women know how strong and important they were. And crafting things to hand out was something she looked forward to. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to do both crafting and make people smile. Hmm… I wonder if this invitation was meant for someone specific or if anyone could join? The Hufflepuff decided to take the risk and meet whoever was waiting in the classroom mentioned on the note.
The date that was mentioned on the invitation was today. Fyriel found her way to the classroom at the hour stated on the note and knocked on the door before quietly opening it. Fyriel hesitatingly entered the classroom and saw two students already there. Neither of them she recognized. Perhaps she had seen them around school somewhere but she had not gotten acquainted. “Hi, um… I found this note saying to come here? I wasn’t sure if I was meant to come or-“, Fyriel asked in a shaky voice. Fyriel walked closer to the pair of students when she introduced herself. “I’m Fyriel by the way, Fyriel Starlingword.” The first-year hoped she was not interfering with their business. She looked around the classroom and noticed a whole bunch of crafting supplies on a couple of tables pushed together. I’m definitely in the right place. She saw loads of coloured paper, a range of pens and pencils in all the colours of the rainbow, pairs of scissors, glue and much more.
The hufflepuff looked at both students with a hopeful glimpse in her eyes. The students were a boy and a girl. They seemed to know each other, or at least that’s what Fyriel could make out. They didn’t seem shy or anything so they were probably friends.

It wasn’t really that Rafael wasn’t fond of women’s rights, or anything. He just felt as if the whole movement were a bit unnecessary.
Before the lot of fire-breathing females he’d formulated in his head decided to come at him with their pitchforks and AK-47s, perhaps they should have stopped to listen to the context in which he spoke. The boy had always found the women’s rights notion rather stupid, as women were every bit a human as every other man on earth. At least, that’s how he had seen it, even from the beginning. Now, sure some were dainty and delicate, and others were – well, crazy – but, for the most part, the collective gender seemed to hold their political and social grounds rather impressively on their own. He’d learned the hard way, from past and present occurrences. After all, it had been a female that had drugged him, a female that had launched a bludger at his shoulder, and a female that had gone for the low blow.
[Those were street rules. Who knew girls played dirty?]
He couldn’t help but wonder, privately, hadn’t the females been empowered all along?
He’d had his suspicions about March 8th, from the time he was a mere boy. There used to be a girl that came over to his house every now and then, a family friend – Aurora Fendiucci. It had always infuriated him in the slightest, how she had always used the holiday as a tool, twisting it to her benefit, turning a once innocent holiday into a plot with the purpose of making the young boy do her bidding. To this day, he’d always regarded the holiday as just that – a plot, a ploy to get the males working in the favor of the feminine race. Another discrimination between their genders. But this time, it hadn’t been formulated from the masculine side. Of course, he wouldn’t go as far as to say he despised the holiday – however, he certainly did not support it actively. He supposed the girls could have their fun for the day, and he would have his.
Though, fate had a funny way of making the boy do things he didn’t want to do.
The boy had been wandering the halls rather aimlessly, utter boredom taking over his livelihood like a plague. To be quite honest, he wasn’t really sure what mood he was in, as it seemed to ever fluctuate – he certainly wasn’t cheerful, but he wasn’t angry. Perhaps aggravated? Dull? There didn’t seem to be a lot going on this particular day. Perhaps it was the date, as everyone seemed to be overtaken with woman fever, making cards, posters, research projects. A scoff escaped the boy’s lips at that. Of course that were the case.
[Perhaps he would need some more convincing before he could properly support the women’s rights movement.]
In the midst of his aimless wandering, a chorus of voices met his ears, a pleasant surprise. Familiar tones, at that. His head turned at the sound – the Liberations Classroom? Whatever could be going on in there? His mind flew back to the meeting a while ago, the same in which a group of brilliant people gathered together to discuss the Potter Trial. The idea that the Liberations Club could have been reinstated gave the young thunderbird a spur of excitement – could it be that another meeting was taking place?
His curiosity got the best of him, and the next thing he knew, he was wandering towards the ‘Liberations Classroom’.
Without another thought to tactics or subtlety, the boy pushed the door open, the noises of the room hitting his senses like a ton of bricks, his eyes working overtime to compensate for the bright colors. That’s…. a lot of paper. He vaguely noted two tables pushed together, completely laden in a multitude of craft supplies. So, it wasn’t a Liberations Meeting. It was – “Arts and crafts?” Yes, it seemed so. Why else would such materials be present? However, he hadn’t heard of an Arts and Crafts club as of yet. It gave him an unsettling thought, one that irritated his insides and made him want to gag. Could it be that… that…
His eyes searched the contents of the room quickly at such an idea, drawing up three faces. Opeila, much to his chagrin, was one of the many people he found among the lot. The two hadn’t exactly hit it off the best during their brief interaction in the Rehearsal Room, but – perhaps that had been his own fault, as he’d been a bit prickly to the girl. Something he had felt rather guilty of after he’d left. Flash was there, too – the boy he’d met in the owlery. A talented singer, that was for sure. He seemed like a kind soul on the outside, though the Gryffindor had his suspicions. No one can be that nice. Surely not. His eyes soon left Flash, resting on an unfamiliar figure – a mysteriously beautiful one at that, all fair skin dark hair, and…. Were those purple eyes?
He tried not to focus on that small fact for the moment, as there were certainly other things to address. “Eh,” he asked aloud, an eyebrow raised and a curious smile on his face. “Forgive my nosiness, I don’t mean to intrude, but… what’s going on here?” Then, to throw off suspicion, he continued. "Would you all mind too much if I joined?"
Wrong move, Raf.

Ivy Seren Fontaine was on her way back from the library. She had been looking for a book about the traditions and customs of the Muggles and had found it. For hours she sat at a table, between the high bookshelves, completely immersed in the books.
She didn’t know much about the Muggles, she and her family lived in seclusion and isolation, but her curiosity about the Muggle world had increased in recent years. As the child of a pure-blood family, Ivy was completely ignorant of Muggle customs, but she had decided to change this. Especially the descriptions of the different holidays had impressed Ivy very much.
There were just too many to remember them all. One of the days, however, had remained in her memory, the “International Woman's Day”. It was celebrated to raise awareness of women's rights and gender equality worldwide and to honour the efforts of the many women who had fought against discrimination. She was immediately enthusiastic about this idea.
Ivy had always been a loner. The library had filled with life so rapidly on that day that Ivy had fled from her classmates. She just wanted to read for herself, in an empty classroom, and think. Lost in thought, she crossed the second corridor and steered unerringly towards a door.
When she opened them, she was terrified. The tables in this classroom had been pushed together and someone had spread paper in all kinds of colours and shapes, pens, glue, scissors and other things all over the place.
Next to the tables stood a boy and two girls facing another student. Ivy had never seen all four of them. It looked as if the boy who was closest to the door had just arrived and Ivy had the unpleasant feeling that she was right with this assumption and had just burst into a conversation.
She quickly put on a confident smile and tightened her shoulders while remained standing in the doorway. “Hello”, she said. Her voice was loud and clear, but her heart was beating like a drum. Ivy felt the others had to hear it. “I’m Ivy Seren Fontaine.”

Opeila had finally placed all the material on the tables. She felt good doing something for this day. Why shouldn't she?
Sure, one could see this as an impersonal event, but this wasn't a birthday, right? Opeila thought, that it was definitely personal enough to support a gender, if it was male or female, and just show them one's acknowledgement.
She turned around, when she heard a familiar voice from near the door. The Slytherin couldn't help but chuckle at his formal language. She knew that he liked to talk like that, but it somehow amused her. In a positive way. "Good afternoon, Flash. Glad you made it!"
Right after her housemate, a Hufflepuff girl entered the room. She said she had found a note that led her to the room and introduced herself as Fyriel Starlingword. "Oh, yeah, I wondered where the note went. Nice to meet you, Fyriel, if you want, you can join us! I'm Opeila Seilun."
The open door seemed to lure people to the classroom, another familiar looking person entered, a Gryffindor. Hadn't they been singing christmas songs together? What she remembered, was that she had made him feel uncomfortable back then. Maybe she could make it up to him today? He asked if he could join.
"We don't mind at all, do we? You're Rafa, right?" She wasn't sure anymore, if that was actually his name... "So, the plan is-"
Opeila stopped, when another Hufflepuff entered the room, a girl she had never seen before. An excited looking girl, who then introduced herself as Ivy Seren Fontaine.
"Hey Ivy, come in! I hope you don't mind me calling you Ivy. I'm Opeila. So, what was I just saying? Right, so the plan is to make some nice cards. I've got a list of girls we could send them to right here, if you have any other ideas or names, feel free to say so." She smiled at the group.

Flash looked around at the crafts that Opeila had diligently gathered, which was a considerable amount. As he looked around to gauge the situation fully, others started to file in with time. First, a young Hufflepuff girl peeked in curiously, but quickly seemed to be at ease with what she saw. That was good, they needed people who wanted to do the crafts.
Personally, Flash had a good sense of taste, but creating something from whole cloth was a bit more difficult. He was much more comfortable delegating things to others, as well as taking over quality control. Opeila didn’t have to ask him, nor would he accept any other role. It was better he didn’t say so out loud though, and just assume the role naturally.
Opeila introduced herself to the girl, Fyriel. Flash was naturally right alongside her.
”It’s good of you to join us, Miss Fyriel. Please take a seat, we were only just getting organized.” Flash smiled pleasantly at her, gesturing to a chair beside them.
In quick succession afterwards, two more people arrived. Rafael D’Spacito, seeming as though he was lost, and another girl, putting on a brave face even though she was clearly unsure of herself. Opeila addressed them as well, one after the other. She seemed to light up as she realized that she had collected a little group for her project. Flash would have to make sure everything went well so Opeila could focus on enjoying herself.
”Rafael, it’s good to see you. And Miss Ivy, both of you come join us.” Flash walked around the conjoined tables, sitting the girls together and motioning Rafael to join him on the other side. Not that the genders had to be segregated, but because he hoped his presence would put Rafa at ease.
Flash placed Opeila’s notebook in the center of the table where everyone could reach it, holding his hand over it.
”Go ahead and look for any girls you may know and write something that will brighten their day. If you’ve picked somebody, be sure to mark them off so we don’t make duplicates.” Flash looked over at Rafa specifically. ”The idea is to compliment them on something besides their looks, what’s inside that makes them worthy of respect.”
He figured from the flumoxed look on Rafa’s face that he didn’t know what he had gotten himself into, but hoped that the eye contact he gave him would clue him into the fact that he could rely on Flash to help him out if he needed it.
”Just write what comes from the heart, and have fun with the bountiful materials Opeila has provided.” Flash opened his arms, alluding to the fact that they could go ahead and begin.
He planned to hover around Rafa for a bit before walking around and making sure everyone understood the process. The whole thing reminded him of the lessons on decorum that his sister used to give him. He wished he had a riding crop to point at things with, like she had.

Compliments and Motivation
As the two students in the classroom welcomed Fyriel, she heard their names were Opeila and Flash, she noticed more students walking in and joining their little crafting group. The Hufflepuff was glad she had not interrupted anything private and felt very happy she would be enjoying a day of crafting. Fyriel took the empty seat next to a boy called Rafael and shyly gave him a smile. She did the same toward Flash who had sat down across from Rafael. Immediately after, she grabbed some of the coloured papers on the conjoined tables and three pastels. One fiery red, a spring green and a sky blue. The words for the compliment cards didn’t jump to her mind immediately so with the red pastel crayon in her right hand she tapped it on her other hand a few times, as if to help with getting inspiration.
Fyriel started on her first card. She took a light blue piece of paper and folded it in half so it was an easy-to-stand-up-card. With the sky blue crayon, she started writing. In big, elegant letters she wrote her first motivational sentence;" I can’t think of a better representation of BEAUTY than a women who is unafraid to be herself". The word ‘BEAUTY’ she wrote in bold, obvious letters so it would stand out from the other words. On the table, she found a pair of scissors that Fyriel used to cut out stars and other shapes to glue on the first card. Fyriel checked the card for any spelling mistakes or flaws and once satisfied she wrote her name in a smaller font in a corner. It does not have to be obvious whom it is from, as long as the message arrives. Fyriel closed the card and on the front she wrote the name of Olphie Bercegeay. That was going to be the first woman Fyriel would give the card to.
Now Starlingword had caught the inspiration bug, she begun with the rest of her cards. She would do six in total so only five more to make. While Fyriel was thinking of her next power quote, she looked around the tables to see how the rest of her crafting group was doing. Perhaps I should mingle a little. Fyriel looked at Rafael next to her and she got the impression he was a tad socially awkward around new people. A bit like herself. Hmm... I do not want to make him feel discomforted so perhaps I should talk to someone else first. Fyriel’s eyes stuck on Opeila, the girl that had so friendly welcomed her into the group. Seems like a good choice. “Um, Opeila?” Fyriel spoke in a soft but hearable voice. Once she caught Opeila’s attention, she added: “Did you come up with this idea to make the cards? I really like the initiative.” Fyriel ended her question with a smile and waited for Opeila’s answer.

"We don't mind at all, do we? You're Rafa, right?"
So, she remembered him. Rafael wasn’t sure if that fact were supposed to be flattering or worrying – how far did her memory extend? To the singing…. Or to the snapping? He really hadn’t meant to lash out in such a way, but to put it simply, the girl had taken him off-guard. It wasn’t really his fault. But nonetheless, she didn’t seem angry, nor upset. Was it possible she had forgotten? Or, did she simply not care, instead choosing to leave their interactions in the past? Whatever the case may be, the thought gave the boy some relief. “That would be me,” he answered with an exhale, his eyes still surveying the surroundings with tired eyes. It was about then he realized someone was behind him – “Excuse me,” he muttered, stepping into the classroom and giving her some space.
“Right, so the plan is to make some nice cards. I've got a list of girls we could send them to….”
Well, the universe was surely a strange creature, one that had bested the young boy once again. Because, seriously, he had been avoiding one thing today. How was it that everything he loathed in the world seemed to come his direction one way or another? He inwardly cursed, taking a brief moment to despise his ruddy luck. Though, by now, he really shouldn’t have been surprised. “Oh,” he muttered, just under his breath, his eyes widening at the notion. “Oh, lovely.” His hands shoved their way into his pockets, his eyes narrowing, just slightly, a tic that only one with a very keen eye would be able to catch.
[What would happen if he walked out? Would he be screwing his chances with Opeila? Giving Flash the wrong idea? Would the feminists wreak a fiery revenge on him at a later date? Would the higher forces mistake his reluctance as an ill-willed decision, and choose to haunt him in his further endeavors?]
It was about then that the boy heard Flash’s voice waft over to him, breaking him away from his inward turmoil – “Rafael, it’s good to see you,” he had said. "And Miss Ivy, both of you come join us.” The Slytherin beckoned him over – Rafael numbly complied, his feet carrying him over in the direction of his designated seat. He shortly sat down, making himself comfortable in his chair, before scooting up, his eyes catching the crafting supplies with an eye of disdain, much like how a Valley Girl would regard a tarantula, or a child cooties.
Others started talking, but Rafael could do nothing to pay them any attention. Instead, his mind was instead theorizing the best ways to escape such a ruddy situation. Could he just write a letter to Jo, telling her how much he loved hated her? Write a hate letter to Ruka? Numbly, he was reminded of the gain for completing such an errand – house points, the item that would push Gryffindor closer to victory. Perhaps he would have to sacrifice his time and dignity for the betterment of his house.
[At least, that’s how he justified it.]
Deciding to at least make some use of his growing boredom, the boy reached out, grasping one of the parchments. Now, who to write to? There weren’t a lot of girls the boy actually knew, much less he’d actually suffer through writing a letter to. Maybe Saskia, female Quidditch Captain, the only one he’d met, if only briefly. Aurelia, he supposed, was an option, strong, scary, ambitious as she may be. Katrina, too, the only person he’d ever told about his dead sister. Was Jo even an option? Surely he couldn’t muster any loving words to the girl, lest she be getting ideas about him or something. The other options, however, seemed viable enough. Yes, he’d start with Saskia.
Grabbing one of the pens off the table, he began scrawling onto his piece of paper –
He could recognize a few brilliant things about Saskia – even if he didn’t know much about her personality, or mannerisms and such, he could surely recognize her position in Quidditch. She was quite the skilled player, as she had surely proved by carrying her team to the top of the Quidditch Roster. Something that must bring her house great pride. It was something that spoke volumes about the girl – something he could surely write about in words.
Waiting for another moment, he began writing again:

Grabbing one of the pens off the table, he began scrawling onto his piece of paper –
He paused, his pen coming to rest on the paper corner as he pondered for a quick moment. What was he even supposed to say to a girl? He’d only ever seen Saskia twice, once in a Quidditch Match and the other in an Errand. And he hadn’t talked to her either time – which certainly made things harder. He sighed, rubbing his forehead. What to say, what to say…Dear Saskia,
He could recognize a few brilliant things about Saskia – even if he didn’t know much about her personality, or mannerisms and such, he could surely recognize her position in Quidditch. She was quite the skilled player, as she had surely proved by carrying her team to the top of the Quidditch Roster. Something that must bring her house great pride. Waiting for another moment, he began writing again:
Maybe the sincerely’s a bit much, he thought wryly as he reviewed his work. Everything else seemed spot-on, though. A beautiful letter if he did say so himself – it certainly stood out among his usual works, in the least. Perhaps there were others that could do better, poets and writers that could clearly express their true emotions through beautiful and carefully-placed words, but for now, he would settle for his messy scrawl. Quickly folding the note into two, the boy shoved it messily into his pocket, to be owled at a later date. Strangely enough, he felt rather good about writing such a letter, a feeling he would be open to feeling again.Dear Saskia,
I haven’t actually ever spoken to you before, nor have I gotten to truly know you. But one can recognize certain traits about someone from afar, and without much difficulty – what I’ve observed, is a brilliant strategist, an excellent flyer, and an overall exceptional Quidditch Captain. You’ve certainly gained my respect in this regard. Best of luck to you in your next game, and looking forward to facing you on April 7th.
Sincerely,
Rafael D’Spacito

Compliments and Motivation
Ivy remained standing undecidedly in the doorway for a moment. She was only looking for a place to read undisturbed. But the others seemed to be happy that she had shown up and had asked her very politely to join their group. She liked the idea of making cards for the female inhabitants of the castle. The book could wait.
She quickly let it slide into her pocket and slowly approached the table. She took a seat a little away from the others and then let her eyes wander. All five of them seemed to be the same age. Ivy registered a girl and boy from Slytherin. The girl had introduced herself as Opeila and had been immediately sympathetic to Ivy. A girl from Hufflepuff and a boy from Gryffindor were also present.
As the girl from Hufflepuff and Rafael, the boy from Gryffindor, were already starting with their cards, Ivy also reached for some coloured paper and some pens. She quickly wrote down two names from the list, then crossed them out carefully and then began to fold the paper.
On the fronts of both folded cards she wrote down in her most beautiful handwriting ever the name of the student to whom the card was addressed. Ivy had made sure that both girls came from her house, so she could later hand out the cards in the dormitories. She had chosen Ruthie Greer and Lark Flaer.
When the names were emblazoned on the cards in a beautiful silvery tone, she put the card made of sapphire blue paper aside and devoted herself to the card made of ice blue paper. Ivy now reached for a gold-coloured pen and wrote “International Women's Day” as the headline.
Then she took her notebook out of her pocket, in which she used to write down nice and motivating sayings and quotes. She chose one that suited her opinion ideally for today and began to transfer word for word to the card in curved letters.
She was completely absorbed in her work and focused on her writing that she did not really understand the question of the girl who came from Hufflepuff, but instead of continuing to work on her crafts Ivy curiously lifted her head and looked over at her and Opeila, to whom the question had obviously been directed.
