| . | verity𝓝ow that the duelling season had finished, along with most of the other sports, there wasn't much to do in school aside from wake up, eat food, go to classes, do homework, and practice the occasional combo in the Duelling Club. Being a First year meant entertainment was extremely limited. Unless Vera wanted to sneak out of the castle to that village nearby that all the older students would visit and get a detention, which she opted not to. Being in the Wizarding World was already scary enough, with the defensive spells they had to learn in their Defense Against the Dark Arts class and the magical creatures that lurked around the grounds, whether on land or in the waters of the Great Lake. Going out alone would basically be a death wish. So, another day in the castle. It wouldn't be like that in a month, but a month felt like eons away. Vera would go home and celebrate Christmas with her family. She wondered what the presents would be like this year. What would her parents get her? Should she get anything for her brothers? What would they like? There was a lot to think about before going home this year. But for now, there was still a month left to figure it out. For now, she had to find something to occupy her time with before dinner. Vera frequented the fourth floor because of the Duelling Club. The other rooms on the floor remained undiscovered despite the endless exploring she did in the first month. With the moving staircase, Vera really only had the brain power to come up and do what she needed to do, then leave. But some days, as she would leave the Duelling Club, she would hear music coming from the other rooms on the floor. As fate would have it, the moving staircase had led her up to the fourth floor with little resistance. She wouldn't be duelling, however, since it wasn't on her usual Tuesday schedules. That was a Thursday thing. Instead, she approached a set of large double doors and pushed it open. Immediately, Vera noticed the chandelier at the centre of the room. There were little birds—not alive, she realized after staring at them for a minute—perched on the extensive arms of the fixture riddled with candles that lit up the room. Along the walls, there were portraits, with a few making eye contact with Vera as she came in. She lowered her head. Moving pictures and portraits that could talk were still novel things for her, and they never failed to scare the living daylights out of her every time they talked. No one had spoken up yet, though, but she figured that once she started doing something, they would. Vera looked around. There was an open dance floor, perfect for practicing ballet and ballroom if she ever wanted to. On one side, there were instruments from all sorts of instrument families. Strings, woodwinds, percussion, the piano. Immediately, Vera's fingers twitched. She hadn't touched any instruments or danced since coming to Hogwarts; she hadn't even brought her ballet flats or her flute, afraid to practice anything without her teachers. But Hogwarts had it all, all the heavy instruments she wouldn't have been able to bring in a suitcase on the train. The school was still lacking music and dance teachers, but that was expected. Vera looked at the door, then at the instruments, then back at the door. It wouldn't hurt to spend the evening here, would it? |

xxxxxxxx𝔗uesday turned tranquil as another tiresome class concluded. Exhausted students staggered out of classrooms whilst Cecilia swiftly escaped to the fourth floor. At some point, the rehearsal room became a sanctuary for the rare moments when she yearned for some quiet time. Though she could not bring herself to tolerate her thoughts and a heavy silence, music proved to be a fitting alternative. Mornings there were seldom quiet but she quickly learnt that the evenings often provided a more serene silence; no shoes squeaking as dancers performed pliés and no blaring brass drowning out the delicate melody of her harp. Cecilia huffed, pressing the heel of her foot against one heavy oak door whilst her hand pushed open the other. Despite her frequent visits, she never grew used to how much force it took to move them and opted for a less than graceful approach. In her right hand was a small stack of parchment, inked with lines and musical notation. Once the doors swung open, she quickly slipped inside before they shut. Her movement was so swift that the top page of the stack was swept away by a small, sudden gust. As the parchment slowly descended to the floor, her gaze fixed on the girl standing in front of her. ────𓃦──── Poised and crowned with golden hair; her beauty was soft and ethereal like an angel. “Oh!” Seafoam eyes widened as Cecilia realised that she bore witness to her unusual entrance. Instinctively, she ran her fingers through a stray curl and tucked it behind her ear. A soft “hello there” was all she could muster with a flustered smile. Her neat school robe and polished loafers suggest that she was not here for dance practice, but her gaze lingering on the instruments suggested that her intentions were similar to the young fox’s. “I don’t believe we’ve met. I’m Cecilia,” she hummed, extending her left hand to the girl. It was rather unusual that manners did not seem to elude her this evening. Perhaps her sanctuary allowed her to lower her guard slightly. Music did not care for masks, and neither did those who appreciated it – or at least that’s what Cecilia hoped. Her brows furrowed slightly as she glanced at the instruments. It was difficult to discern which one caught her eye. Coercing an answer out of her seemed far too tedious given the limited time they had, so Cecilia asked outright. “Forgive me for being so forward, but do you play?” |

| . | verity𝓥era swiftly turned to the doors. Seeing another person enter, Vera put her hands together at her waist and gave a curt nod without much thought. Then, she noticed the paper that had fallen and started towards it. When she bent down to pick it up, she kept on hand on her chest. "Here you are," Vera said as she handed the girl the paper. Now that they were closer, it was easier to see who had come in to the space. The girl—Cecilia, she had introduced herself as—had bright hair that, while they were indoors looked brown but had the unmistakable hue of orange when the light from the windows fell just right, emitted a fiery glow, and equally bright blue eyes. Her hair complemented the green robe she was wearing, signifying Slytherin. When Vera first came on the train, Sage had told her to stay away from Slytherins. So far, the concern was unwarranted, though Vera did suppose she had only interacted with one Slytherin so far and one wasn't representative of the population. Given the sheet music and the ease in which she walked into the place, Cecilia wasn't at all hissy or territorial as Vera thought Slytherins would be. Sure, the room was a public space, but perhaps she wanted a private place to practice? Nevertheless, Cecilia was welcoming and Vera was relieved for it. She met Cecilia half-way with her own left hand and shook it gently. "I'm Verity. It's nice to meet you, Cecilia." "I do." She nodded. Then, she turned back to the instruments. "I wasn't sure if Hogwarts had a proper studio or theatre for this sort of thing, otherwise I would've brought my things." She let out a lighthearted sigh. Some part of her told her that she should have expected this. Why wouldn't they? This was a boarding school for children aged eleven until they graduated at seventeen or eighteen. They would be spending majority of their time here, so the school had to have the resources for other everyday activities. But Hogwarts was advertised as a magic school, a place to learn spells, potions, and the wizarding world. There wasn't exactly a subtext that suggested other recreational activities that didn't involve magic. Was it truly hard to believe that perhaps Hogwarts didn't have a space for such things? But they did, and now Vera had more things to do other than do her homework or practice duelling. A wonderful thing, really. Instruments demanded more weight, which was then difficult to carry onto the train, into the carriages, then off the train and into the castle and dorms. Vera was grateful that her house was nearer to the ground. Hauling a suitcase of clothes and her instrument cases up the moving stairs (which were already a nightmare without hauling anything) was bound to end in disaster. Her flute was compact enough; her violin may take some extra work; a harp would be impossible without magic. She looked at the school's selection and beamed. They had everything. Vera looked at the sheet music Cecilia was holding and hummed. She wanted to maybe lean in and see the notation—if it was for an instrument she could recognise or even a song she knew—but that could be considered an invasion of privacy, no? "What do you play?" She asked.
