That was the only word that came to mind when he looked over his timetable and saw a double History of Magic lesson waiting for him as the last lesson of the day. It was not a hands-on subject like Charms or Defence Against the Dark Arts. Instead, it demanded long stretches of sitting still and listening to stories of the past that rarely managed to hold his attention. This time, it was Ancient Egyptian Wizards.

Still, that did not mean he was willing to fall behind.

When the lesson finally ended, he lingered behind while the rest of the class filed out, then settled himself beside one of the tall windows in the corridor just outside the classroom. He lost track of time there, hunched over his book, filling the margins with cramped notes.

By the time he finally looked up, the light in the corridor had dimmed, and he realised with a small jolt that curfew was approaching. Gathering his things, he pushed himself to his feet and headed back towards the Gryffindor common room before it was too late.

He must not have been looking where he was going, because he suddenly collided with someone and was knocked back onto the stone floor, his books and parchment scattering across the corridor. When he looked up to see what he had walked into, he realised it was a girl.

"Uhm… sorry,” he said quickly. “Here, let me help you.”

Edward pushed himself up from the floor and hurried over to her, brushing dust from his robes as he went. He held out a hand, his expression sheepish as he waited for her to take it.

"Are you okay?" he asked, though upon closer inspection the girl looked oddly familiar to him "Rose?".

It was Rose's last classes before she could go back to her dorm and rest, finally.

Today has been exhausting filled up with so many classes and run all along the day. She didn't mind busy days but lately it was way too much. She needed some time to rest. When she was not in class she was in the library to study which she also did today after her classes were done.

Indeed as her last class ended Rose headed up towards the library to study until almost curfew time. She was almost falling asleep on her parchment when she checked the time on her watch. Her eyes widened as she didn't expect it to be that late and to have stayed that long in the library. No way her neck was feeling stiffed. She quickly packed her things into her bag before leaving the library to get to the Ravenclaw common room.

Rose was walking in the corridor not really looking where she was going. Was it the tiredness? Probably. However she didn't realise it until she felt herself falling back on the stone floor.

"Ouch..." that was hard not really something you want to fall over.

Thankfully she had nothing in her hands otherwise everything would have fallen to the floor. She was rubbing her back when she heard a male voice asking her if she was okay.

She grunted a bit not out of annoyance but of tiredness. She was only dreaming of her bed so she didn't need to find herself on a cold hard stone floor.

"I'm...I'm alright, thank you." she muttered as she looked up to see a boy holding a hand out to help her getting up. Well at least that was nice.

Then suddenly the boy called her by her name.

How come does he know my name? she wondered surprised.
Do I know him? she thought as she slightly titled her head while looking at him before taking his hand to find herself back on her feet.

Rose kept looking at the young boy in front of her as she was trying to remember if she knew him. She frowned.

Maybe he does look familiar? she was not sure. Suddenly she got a flashback and widened her eyes.

"Edward?" she asked unsure that was him or not.

If so Edward, Edward Hawks was his father's friend son. They happened to see each other when they were younger as their fathers were working together as Auror however they had never really talked nor become friends.

It was surprising to meet him again here.

Edward gave a small nod, letting go of her hand once she was steady on her feet. There was something strange about bumping into someone familiar like this, out of nowhere, especially after not thinking about them for so long. But the name had come to him before he’d even realised he was saying it, so that had to mean something.

“Yeah.” he replied “It’s Edward.”

He glanced down, brushing off his robes, then stooped to gather a stray piece of parchment that had skidded a few feet across the floor.

"Sorry again,” he muttered, tucking the page under his arm. “Didn’t see you coming.”

His gaze flicked back up to her as he straightened. She looked tired, maybe a little confused still. Then again, he probably didn’t look much better. His back still ached slightly from landing hard on the stone.

“Good thing neither of us were holding anything sharp,” he joked, managing a small smile.

It was hard to tell if she actually remembered him or was just being polite. Either way, he wasn’t going to make a big deal out of it. He shifted the strap of his satchel on his shoulder and gave a small shrug. They hadn’t really talked back then. He mostly remembered sitting in her house while their dads disappeared into another room. He’d been bored stiff, just waiting for it to be over. At best, they’d exchanged a few quick hellos.

Edward glanced over his shoulder, uneasy. Curfew had to be in less than ten minutes now, and the last thing he needed was Peeves popping up and tattling to a professor. He’d already heard he’d done that to several other students caught in the halls after hours.

“Anyway, probably a good idea we get moving before someone shows up,” he said, grabbing the rest of his things. “Are you heading back to your common room? I can walk you back… if you want. Could be nice to catch up?”

Rose was standing on her feet again as she brushed the dust out of her robes while looking back at Edward. It was strange and curious how his name came up in her mind that easily as if she had always known him which actually was not technically wrong. However she could have easily forgotten about him since they were young, not friends and were only exchanging short hellos back then without any further discussions whenever they met.
That was indeed curious. Yet she felt glad he was someone familiar rather than a total stranger she would have bumped into as it would have been way more awkward and she hated embarrassing situations as she never knew how to behave or what to say. Also it appeared to her Edward was as much surprised as she was for them to meet again like this. Maybe was it a sign for them to bond for good this time? Probably.

"No don't worry it's fine." she reassured him with a gentle smile as he apologised again for bumping into her.
"I too was not looking where I was going. I was basically walk sleeping eyes open." she said slightly laughing. More of embarrassment than because it was funny.

Thankfully as Edward stated they had nothing sharps in each others hands and Rose had nothing at all in her arms. Only her bag hanging over her shoulder which was starting to get sore because of her bag's heaviness as it was full of her books. The tiredness was not helping neither. She quickly glanced at her watch to check how much time was left before curfew. She didn't want to get a detention because she had bumped into someone making her late to reach her common room.

It seemed Edward got the same idea as he offered them to get back to their respective common room although he proposed to walk her back. That indeed would allow them to catch up but Rose was also worried he would be late to his common room and be past curfew.

"Yes that's a good idea! But would that be okay for you?" she asked a concern in her voice.
"About the curfew won't you be breaking it? I wouldn't want you to get into troubles because of me." she told him a bit worried.
"Of course I do appreciate your offer and would love to catch up and actually get to know you." she quickly added not for him to take her other worries as a subtle rejection when it was not at all but real concern for him.
Of course she would be glad to get to know him more as they probably would have quite a lot to share on their fathers and how they were feeling back then when they happened to meet.

Finally not to waste any more time and to enjoy the little time they had Rose spoke again as she started walking.

"Let's walk back to our respective common room together as you suggested to catch up with the few amount of time we have!" she flashed him a smile.

"I'll be fine." he waved dismissively as she asked about missing curfew.

He was thinking entirely different of course, but it'd be rude to retract the offer once it had already spurted out of his mouth, but it would actually be great to get to know her better. He'd always been too shy to speak to her before coming to Hogwarts, though the past few weeks had been great for his anxiety.

"I should've guessed you'd also be attending Hogwarts." Edward said, trailing beside her as they began to walk.

Edward glanced down at her robe and spotted she was in Ravenclaw from its crest, something did not catch his eye earlier. It did happen to calm that voice in his head about curfew, their common rooms were fairly close to each other so at least he didn't have to sprint across the castle to make it back in time.

"Ravenclaw, eh?" he said, nudging his head, then joked "My father would be proud."

While he was joking, he knew deep down that it must have hurt his father to receive that letter informing him that Edward was housed in Gryffindor, and not Ravenclaw. It was one of the things he was most proud of during his time at the school.

"My family have been in Ravenclaw for generations, so it seems I was the exception to the rule, as they say." he added "It's the sorting hat that decides though, so there must be a reason."

It only took a slight flicker of one of torches that burned in it's metal sconce on the wall to make him jolt his head behind him. He shook his head and laughed awkwardly as he looked back at Rose. He was being ridiculous, curfew had not even began yet.

“Sorry, thought I saw something,” he said. “How’ve your first few weeks been here? I swear I’ve spent most of mine just trying to learn where everything is. I walked into the wrong class on the first day. Mixed up the floors.” He grinned.

Rose smiled at Edward when he said he would be fine. She checked again her watch before looking up back at him specifically at his robe. Gryffindor. Both of their common rooms were not too far from each other and they were neither not to far from them. They had around 10 good minutes before the curfew. It was enough time to get to the Ravenclaw common room and for Edward to go to his. Taking in consideration any tricks from the moving staircases may occur.

As they were walking Rose thought she should have guessed Edward would be attending Hogwarts. Unless he would not have had his First Instance of Magic but the thought should have crossed her mind. They could have seen each other at the sorting ceremony too although there were many people. Nevertheless there had been a lot to think of and to do since she arrived so she couldn't blame herself and it was not of a big deal neither. As if Edward read in her mind he said out loud what she has been thinking. She chuckled.

"I was thinking exactly the same. We haven't even seen each other at the sorting ceremony."
"We are not to blame though there were so many people and so many to do after we arrived." she let out a sigh as she recalled that time.

Speaking of sorting ceremony Edward pointed out she was in Ravenclaw. Rose smiled proudly as she wanted to be sorted in that house.

"Yes I wanted to be sorted out in Ravenclaw. All my dad's family have been in Ravenclaw along my brother too. My mom was in Gryffindor without any predominance of her family for it though. However I was not projecting myself in that house." she smiled.
"And seem I was right since The Sorting Hat put me in Ravenclaw."

She listened to Edward who pursued about his family who happened to have been in Ravenclaw for generations. Like with Rose's father's family actually. And it happened she perpetuated it when Edward as he stated seemed to be the exception of his family as he has been sorted out in Gryffindor. Yet she thought of his words.

"You know although I have been sorted out like my dad's family in Ravenclaw and there are things happening for generations in many families doesn't mean it has always to be like this." she told smiling at him.
"Whatever the house you're in parents are still proud. Of course they might have preferences for one house and get a bit disappointed when you're not sorted out in the one they were thinking of... But in the end they will accept it as deep down they know it is the best choice for you." she reassured him.

Rose couldn't quite remember Edward's father how he looked and how he appeared to her when she was seeing him but if he was one of her dad's friend that means he was a good man. So despite Edward might think it was not well welcomed by his father deep down he still should be proud.

"I'm sure your dad and your family are proud of you." she said echoing to her words of earlier.

Rose was not just saying this to reassure Edward or anything as he might not need it but she was truly meaning her words.

Suddenly she saw him looking back as he apologised to have believed seeing something. Rose quietly chuckled.

"Are we being followed by a ghost?" it was a gentle tease as Hogwarts was full of ghost. As long it was not Peeves they were fine.

"About my first experience here..." she thought trying to recall everything.
"It didn't go that bad actually. I have quite met new people. Some became my friends they are great actually." she thought of others things "And as you mentioned you know getting used to everything. The classes, the surrounding areas, the atmosphere here. I really like it." she told him thoughtfully as a smile appeared on her lips as if she were daydreaming.
"But surprisingly I haven't mixed the floors yet." she added with a small laugh as an answer to Edward's comment on his own experience.

"Have you explored around too?"she curiously asked him.

She had other questions in mind such as what his favourite subject was, or what he liked the most here, his thoughts on his house, his friends and so on but obviously she couldn't just overwhelm him with so many questions when they had just met. Again.

Edward listened thoughtfully as Rose spoke, and smiled softly as she reassured him about his family, ducking his head ever-so-slightly.

"Thanks." he said after a moment "It's not like I regret being in Gryffindor, though. Everyone has been nice here.. at least for the most part and I feel it's where I belong."

"If he is disappointment, then he'll just have to get over it." he muttered, speaking of his father.

Her teasing about the ghosts made him snort, the sound slipping out before he could stop it.

"I hope not." he said, turning his head again, watching behind from the corner of his eye "Some of the ghosts can be terrifying, like the b..bloody baron."

Edward shivered at the thought of the Bloody Baron, as if even saying the name alone would summon him. He hadn't actually got a direct view of the ghost, at least not yet, but some of the other students told him that he was pale as snow, and ghoulish looking, with great big chains wrapped around his body. He had a nightmare about it that same night.

As the hallway became much calmer again, Edward relaxed, and nodded his head as Rose asked if he had explored the castle.

"Well.. I have, a little bit, but admittedly, not as much as I want to." he said, as he lifted his books further up his chest as they began to slip from his hands "I didn't expect as much homework at the beginning of the year, every time I want to explore, I can't because of it."

"Maybe i'll get some free time over Christmas." he sighed, but then perked up shortly after "Have you found anything interesting yet? I want to find a place that hardly any students know about."

Rose nodded at Edward's words who seemed to appreciate his house Gryffindor and to be sorted out in that one. It was nice to hear it rather than him not liking it. There could be nothing worse than disliking the house one ended up to. Of course at some points anyone would get used to it but to Rose if she had been sorted out in a house she didn't want to or think wasn't made for her being at Hogwarts would have been more painful than anything else. It was the same with the parents' will. If she had to disappoint her parents but to be in the house she wanted to, be it. If her parents were satisfied and proud of her being in the house of their choices but that doesn't fit her she couldn't be happy or feel fulfilled with it. Thankfully neither of these were the case for her.

She was brought back to reality after drifting away in her thoughts by Edward's voice who mentioned about ghosts and the Bloody Baron.

"Terrifying?" she asked curious "Really? To be honest I have no idea because I'm not sure I have seen him. Or if so I didn't know it was him." she chuckled.

Rose quickly glanced at Edward who didn't really seem amused at the idea of seeing the Bloody Baron. Maybe he was indeed frightening. She frowned a bit thoughtful.

"But if you had not seen him yet how do you know he is terrifying? I suppose some older students told you so?" she tried to recall if her brother has ever mentioned about the ghosts at Hogwarts. Perhaps he certainly did but Rose's mind was quite blank right now. Probably because she was tired of her day and couldn't think much anymore. She slightly shrugged her shoulders before smiling to Edward.

"I'm sure whoever told you that was just to scare you!" she told him on a reassuring tone.

They kept walking and everything seemed to become calmer as Edward mentioned the amount of homework they got even at the beginning of the year. Rose slightly smiled at the thoughts.

"That's right. But I don't mind as I could spend hours and hours in the library." her smile widened. She did enjoy going to the library to study.

"Nevertheless I can understand not everyone like it." she gently chuckled.
"I'm sure you'll find time to explore! Yes probably around Christmas! But aren't you going back home?" she asked Edward on a curious tone.

At Edward's next question and comment Rose smirked.

"Well maybe I did." her eyes were sparkling as she smiled mischievously.
"But if I were to tell you that wouldn't be a place hardly any students know about anymore, would it?" she laughed.

She didn't really have found like a mysterious place not many students know about rather one she liked going to because not many students were going as it was a bit further than the usual area students may gather to.

“She looked towards the dark, starry sky wishing she could drown in its vastness, the way one drifts in the deep, endless ocean.”
