While the trophy room was not one that Flash entered happily, he couldn’t raise any suspicion to the person he was walking with. There were two reasons, maybe three, that he wasn’t fond of it. For one, it reminded him of his first meeting with Burnett, and how badly that went for him. He also wasn’t fond of having a bunch of random people’s accomplishments shoved in his face.
Well, they weren’t all entirely random, as he was horrified to find that his current companion already knew.
”Here’s what I was looking for, look, they have your last name: Darius Holmwood!” The girl with him pointed triumphantly at a trophy.
Taken by surprise, Flash’s eyes widened, taking a step back. He hadn’t spent any time looking for his brothers’ trophies, even though he knew they floated around the room somewhere. The room was so littered with trophies from top to bottom that he assumed it would never come up. Flash reapplied his face, and walked up to the trophy.
”It says he was a Gryffindor, is he related to you? This trophy is from 2015.” She continued, not having noticed Flash’s reticence.
Having to answer something, Flash cleared his throat before he spoke, having to think of what to say on the fly.
”Oh, yes, Darius is my older brother. He was a very accomplished student.” Flash gave little to no information away. ”Are you hoping you’ll have a trophy in here one day?”
Flash smiled, changing the subject as quickly as possible. She was being too nosy, but he couldn’t just snap at her and say he didn’t want to talk about it. Not that he felt any ill will towards his brother Darius, he was proud of him for what he had overcome in his time at Hogwarts, but he also didn’t want his current classmates fawning over him. Compared to Darius, Flash was completely uninteresting.
”Your older brother? I didn’t know you had a brother! What was he like?”
His attempt to change the subject had been ignored. He was going to have to find a way to weave himself away from the topic while remaining perfectly polite, and make sure not to imply that anything was amiss. He hated to think of this girl going around talking about what an amazing, interesting brother Flash had. It would be all anyone would talk about.
”He was a good brother to me. I only ever got to see him on his holidays from school. I’m sorry to say I don’t have much to tell you.” Flash gave another attempt. Beneath his unchanging face, he writhed with impatience. It’s none of your business.
He wished anything would save him from this conversation.

The day had been rather nice for Ross. Classes had treated him well, and breakfast was as good as ever. Charms was his next class, and he ecstatic. Charms was one of his favorites, and today just felt it would be especially good. He had time to kill, but felt leaving the third floor would be redundant. So there Ross was, wandering around the third floor aimlessly as he searched for something to make the hour somewhat eventful. He considered it exploring , and every time he found something particularly new of the school he would always have this slight curious grin. It made him feel like a real detective. The entire setting of Hogwarts really was perfect for a murder mystery, or perhaps a legend in the depths. Today he felt it was a good idea to explore the Trophy room so he could gawk at even more wizards he had no clue who they were.
Well, he felt it was a good idea until he heard his voice
It sent chills down the Hufflepuff's spine. The voice was clear, but just as familiar as ever. Though it had been some time before Ross had had the conversation with the boy, the oh so familiar tone haunted him to the current moment. Ross tensed up, unsure of what to do, so he did what any good creature on the food chain would do, which just happened to be examine the perimeter. At best he would be able to simply sneak out, at worst he would have to hide.
The Slytherin was not difficult to spot as he looked from left to right. Not only was the room not too horridly crowded, but the Slytherin simply gave off a strange aura. He was standing in such a position that Ross would be easily spotted if he was to leave, though he was not quite sure what the Slytherin would do. On the other hand, hiding would be ridiculous. It was a trophy room, after all.If anything he would end up drawing attention to himself, or damaging a trophy which he assumed was quite expensive.
So he simply stood there, like a deer in headlights. Ross was frozen for a solid few seconds, before he proceeded to turn around and act like he was examining a particularly interesting trophy that was so faded that Ross could swear was possibly about slug racing. Come to think of it, if being a detective did not work out perhaps Ross would become a slug racer instead. Yes, that seemed rather interesting. Even so, he still picked up on words that the Slytherin was saying.
”It says he was a Gryffindor, is he related to you? This trophy is from 2015.” the girl spoking to him spoke.
A Gryffindor? How odd. Ross had thought that the two groups never got along. That was rather peculiar. 2015 was only 5 years ago, so perhaps his brother was still here.
The boy responded with seemingly a rather regular response, and one Ross really could not think much of. The only thing that really stuck out was the sudden, random question. It did not quite fit, but Ross thought little to nothing of it.
As they continued to chatter, Ross could not help but be unable to resist turning around out of curiosity that could kill him once more. It surprised him how polite the girl was being, and much more how kind the Slytherin was being in return. His first and second impression were quite the contrary to this completely new person of how he was acting.
Was he going to use this girl too?
It was a thought, but it simply nagged at his thoughts. It left him nervous for the girl, but much more for himself. If he was caught witnessing, who knew what could happen. On the other side, there was something new about the Slytherin. It was not a new such as how he was acting, but it seemed there was a new something that made him seem somewhat.. uncomfortable. Ross could not put his finger on it, but it slightly concerned him; however, once more made him more intrigued into who this kid was.
In a moment of recklessness, the boy made a split second decision. He found his legs moving at a faster pace than expected at the two first years.
He needed to intervene on such a strange conversation. The girl may get hurt, the Slytherin was acting off, Ross needed to get out, but most importantly Ross was curious.
He skidded to a halt as he arrived at his destination. He gave a needlessly pitiful attempt at a smile towards the Slytherin and the girl.
"Heyyy.." he began, his hey being dragged out far too much for a normal conversation "Didja hear 'bout the slug racin' winner over in that there corner?' He inquired. "It's quite interesting, isn't it?"
He remarked, attempting to sound as confident as he possibly could. It surprisingly worked slightly. Perhaps if that slug racing deal did not pick up, maybe he could become a star in improv or something along those lines.
"Horned ones are actually an ingredient in the Boil-Cure potion, aren't they?" his thin smile slowly turned smug, as he slightly glared at the Slytherin next to him.

Right as he was contemplating the verbal pathway he could lead the two of them down, his periphery caught a sudden swerve out of left field. Ross Stephens, unabashedly approaching him in the middle of a conversation. The child was beyond blundering, he was a bundle of vibrating anxious energy. Seeing him approaching with a panicked smile on his face, Flash felt a feeling akin to disgust, with an undercurrent of disbelief. That he stopped right in front of him and started talking was when Flash simply had to accept it. He could put his feelings away for the time being, he didn’t need to suffer them immediately. He could always be upset later.
Afterall, it was exactly what he had wanted, as though a wish had been granted. A cursed wish, with bizarre results. Why Ross had decided to butt into the conversation completely unprompted, he would have to figure out later. For the time being, he intended to use him to his advantage.
”Sl...ug racing. That’s fascinating.” At first, Flash’s voice was flat, still running the brand new scenario through his mind. When he continued, his smile returned along with his intonation. ”That does make you wonder, do you think it’s a very competitive field? When you think of how the magical world is, there must be more to it than meets the eye. I imagine for some, slug racing is everything to them. It’s quite endearing when you think of it like that.”
Flash knew what the girl liked to hear. Cute, fun stories. She had wanted to hear stories about Darius and Flash’s childhood, but that wasn’t going to happen. Instead, she looked between Ross and Flash, partially confused, but quickly swept up into the conversation. Flash just had to make it interesting, so that she would easily forget that she ever asked about the trophy. So, slug racing. That was good enough.
”Riki, this is Ross. He’s a good friend of mine. Very funny.” Flash looked Ross dead in the eyes, a soft, friendly smile on his face. He hoped he choked on it. ”Hey, how are you doing in Potions, anyway? I’ve seen some of your hard work in class. You must be studying a lot.”

The Hufflepuff was surprised as he followed along, but more relieved than anything. Though a slight bit of confidence had gone a long way within him, he would be telling a fib if he were to proclaim he did not have the jitters just from approaching Flash; however, that was not what surprised him the most.
What surprised him the most is the fact he was acting nice. Though he was certain the boy was excellent at faking, Ross had no clue they were capable of being a kind person. Still, it put a slight smile on his face. He wondered if he ever genuinely was kind, and found himself slightly worrying for the girl. Still, Ross stayed in character. Well, he supposed it was not exactly a character was it?
"Well, i'd hope it'd be competitive, wouldn't you? he responded, sounding genuinely thoughtful while also for once voicing how he thought. "It'd be pretty boring if it was super slow. You'd hope the slugs were gettin' good food, wouldn't ya?"
With a small pause, he came up with something almost laughable to him. His smug smirk stayed strong as he opened his mouth.
"Perhaps we should all watch one together some time." he remarked casually, looking far too pleased with himself.
Though he was attempting to help Flash, it would be such a missed opportunity to not take advantage of the slight kindness that Flash had given him in these moments. Sure it would be an absolute no or ignored completely, but it felt good to Ross and that was what mattered to him.
He nodded at the girl in order to acknowledge her presence. "A pleasure to meet ya." he greeted, but quickly directed his attention back to Flash as he heard the word potions.
As soon as potions got brought up, Ross genuinely got anxious and nervous at the same time. He had been waiting to show Flash his progress in a spiteful some form of way. Well, some of it was genuinely pride. While it had only been a week since their first meeting, he had already managed to get several O's. Sure there were a couple E's, but it was fine. He was climbing up, and he was excited to finally show it. Still, he knew well not to mention anything of it. It would leave him dead meat for the slugs to eat as a snack.
"Potions is doin' great!" he exclaimed, all of his true excitement coming out.
He glanced at the girl next to him, and realized he somehow needed to get them both apart no matter what as much as he hated to have to deal with the consequences of it. Even so, he was hardly considering the consequences. This was simply too much fun!
"Say, if ya come with me I can show you all the O's i've been gettin'! Just two floors down. As long as we don't get lost on the staircase at least." he remarked. "Or maybe would ya like to learn about slug racing instead? I found plenty on it in the corner over there." he rambled as he pointed to the corner where he had been staring awkwardly at the slug racing trophy.
He felt exhilarated, and did not realize how much he had been getting caught up in the moment. Then again, that was what always happened before a horrid mistake. He never considered the next part until it was too late, but Ross found himself not regretting a word he said.

The mood of the conversation changed, and Flash noticed something with horror in his heart-- Ross was not only enjoying himself, he had also taken control of the conversation. At first he had thought that he was being rescued from a conversation he didn’t want to have, but instead he was just being dragged into an only slightly less horrible conversation. Ross was, as always, exhausting.
Even when Flash would look over at him in Potions class to see if he was doing his due diligence, he got exhausted watching him flipping through page after page of notes, shuffling around books and ingredients haphazardly. Still he had to admit, it seemed as though he was trying to take his demands seriously. He couldn’t say the same for everyone.
Regardless, it seemed Ross had very swiftly realized the situation, as much as Flash didn’t want to give him credit for it. He was happily taking full advantage of the fact that Flash was powerless to raise his ire. He could merely play along, a happy, accepting face plastered on like dry cement.
”Ross, so enthusiastic.” Flash’s was almost sing-song in his reply. ”You know, Riki, there’s been something that I’ve been meaning to talk to Ross about for a while. I hate to exclude you, but would you mind continuing on to class without me?”
It took a bit of convincing, but with the right words, Riki was convinced to leave the two of them alone. She came from an influential family in the wizarding world, her father was a high ranking member of the Ministry of Magic, so Flash didn’t want to risk the chance of Ross saying something damaging out of hand. Also, he wanted this charade to end. As Riki parted ways, saying good-bye to the both of them, Flash kept his eyes trained on her, soft and apologetic. The moment she was gone, his cold eyes snapped back to Ross.
”Have you had your fun?” Flash’s joyous disposition was gone, replaced with something more ambiguous. A face that showed nothing at all. ”Well, I don’t know if you intended it, but I benefited from your interruption. For that, I don’t intend to hold you accountable for how rude you acted. Still, don’t think I’ll grant you clemency just because you did something useful for me.”
Flash explained his position as quickly as possible, as to not leave any room for interpretation. Still, he wanted to find out what Ross' intentions really were. He crossed his arms and waited for a response.

Ross felt relieved as he went along and told Rika to leave, but also felt slightly disappointed. He had plenty more excuses to get the girl to head out that he wanted to try. Something that was wonderful about his brain as it never stopped thinking, which was somewhat a relief as it meant he was alive and well. He had been waiting to use many excuses, and was more than willing to use the snowflake charm in order to make a disruption.
The smug smile stayed on his face, but soon harsh reality began to set in. He no longer was in control of the situation, and his heart dropped faster than his potion grades would after this unit; however, his expression somehow stayed the same. Though his brain knew he was in trouble, his eyes still glinted with determination and slight mischief. Funny enough, this entire situation could be described with Two of Newtons laws.
Newton's Third Law: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
Flash had gotten the upper-ground once, but Ross was rebelling in what he hoped was equal and hopefully opposite. Perhaps it would actually settle what Flash had started.
Newton's First Law: An object in motion will stay in motion and an object at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an outside force
In this case, Ross' confidence was the object in motion and it certainly wasn't stopping. Sure this 'outside force', being Flash' confrontation, could stop him eventually. But of course, it cannot step yet. There was still acceleration left within it, and it was not slowing down quite yet.
Ross stayed more casual than he normally would have as Flash' tone turned serious well.. in a flash. Still, one would be able to tell he had slightly tensed up. His posture straightened and his fingers were clenched.
”Well, I don’t know if you intended it, but I benefited from your interruption. For that, I don’t intend to hold you accountable for how rude you acted. Still, don’t think I’ll grant you clemency just because you did something useful for me.” The Slytherin informed him.
He did something useful for him.
He was in an uncomfortable spot
Ross' eyes were glowing with how much they lit up. There had to be more to the Slytherin than he seemed, and if he did not despise him as much as he did he would absolutely go on a full mystery search to find out who this child was. On the downside, the first step to knowing is knowing someone's actual name. Still, this was only the beginning. There was no way he was leaving this alone.
"AHA! So you were uncomfortable!" Ross quickly accused in an Ace Attorney style.
The smug smile turned excited in an instant as he beamed at his own, blatantly obvious discovery.

Flash looked at him blankly still, unable to grasp anything in Ross’ behavior that he could latch onto. He was a little sheep that balefully followed his order, yet here he was trying to, what, figure him out? Had he seriously been listening, noticed his discomfort, and stepped into help? Sure he had been aiming to get Flash off his back… right?
Or, no, to protect the girl from him? That didn’t make sense either, Ross seemed to be determined to rub it in his face that he had done the right thing, like he was waiting for that to do something for him. What did he think he accomplished, knowing him? Without realizing it was happening, it started to psyche Flash out. Was this weird, sad kid trying to beat him at his own game? The goofy smile twisted up on his face showed an immense amount of self-satisfaction for someone who had done something reckless and learned practically nothing from it.
He was lucky Flash wasn’t a more emotional person, or he might not have been so decent to him. Or… perhaps he was banking on it. His expression drooped, looking down at the floor at his blurry reflection in the shiny marble floors. Am I that obvious? Am I being too careless?
Flash looked up again, now a look of annoyance similar to the first one Ross ever saw.
”Yes, I was. Congratulations, detective, you’ve cracked the case. Now is that all, or do you have more babbling nonsense you need to share with me?”

Ross was on a confidence high. It felt as if nothing could knock him down, and Flash' blank expression seemed to prove it to him. Sure it was not much, but for the first time ever he was getting what he considered petty revenge, even if it was not quite revenge. it was more of a feeling of self gratification due to the fact he had control of his own life for the first time in awhile. It felt right to him; however, it also felt.. wrong in a way. Sure this kid was a jerk, but was he doing the same thing?
He froze as the thoughts began to get to him. It seemed as if ERROR signs should be flashing all over him, because it was almost like he needed a reboot to get working again.
Was this alright?
of course it was. The Slytherin tried to blackmail him!
His own thoughts battled it out, but in the mean time Ross continued to act. Really, he could not think. His head was empty. This was the start of most of his reckless actions anyways, so it could not have been too awful considering he likely had already dug his own hole right there.
He should have left it at that, but instead he continued pushing. His petty revenge suddenly got replaced with his curiosity, or perhaps they both combined. He put a finger up to his own lips and looked to the ceiling as if thinking like a cartoon character would.
"Hmm well, I actually got much more 'nonsense mind you." he remarked, looking back down and staring back into Flash' blue eyes. "First of all, I wasn't lyin' about the grades! I got a bunch of O's this week. Second of all, what's your name, snake boy?, third of all, I dunno what made you uncomfortable, but you 'aught to avoid it next time! And finally, i think you're mighty ru-"
The boy cut himself off as he began to say the last part. He covered his mouth with his hands for a moment. He did not quite have the guts to say it. Sure he was on a confidence streak, but something about finishing that sentence was not right to him. Perhaps it was fear, as it likely was. In that awkward moment, he put his hands down and simply let out an awkward laugh.
"But yeah I been gettin' all O's" he mumbled

Ross wouldn’t relent. He was having a field day playing around in Flash’s leniency. Flash was willing to let things go, to let Ross have his ‘hero’ moment where he talked back to his ‘bad bad bully’. That kindness stopped when he started giving him advice on his life. That was enough.
Flash couldn’t help but see Ross as anything but pestering and harmless, almost like a wind-up toy you didn’t know how to turn off. It seemed like he had been wound up maybe a bit too tightly and was out of control. Flash had to stop his happy tirade before it sunk in.
”Maybe you think you have something hanging over my head. You don’t.” Flash drilled one pointed finger into Ross’ shoulder. ”You aren’t done getting O’s yet, so stop patting yourself on the back for doing what you’re supposed to do. Also, I’m not accepting any comments about how to run my life. Not from you or anyone.”
Flash went back to folding his arms, but looked at the door briefly, intending to make his exit before Ross tried to pry any further. If he was doing well in his classes, what did he have to gain by throwing Flash off anyway? Did he really want a lighter sentence, or was it something else? Flash almost didn’t want to know.
”I’m not a mystery for you to solve, I don’t need to be understood. So stay out of my personal life, and mind your own.” Flash remembered the things he read in Ross’ diary, and started putting the pieces together. He did also note the irony that he was telling him to stay out of his personal business when he had been intimately acquainted with Ross’ personal life. Flash was different, though, right? His strict face faltered a bit. ”It’s not like I can avoid talking about my family, that people want to know more about them. It’s…”
What was he saying, why was he still talking? He should have just left with Riki, he had no idea why he was still humoring Ross. He let his emotions get the better of him, he had to empty it out, let them go. Flash took a deep breath to try to refocus.
”It’s… it’s about time I go. You should… just focus on your studies, instead… alright?” Flash was disoriented, the entire interaction threw him off. He needed to remove himself from it, it wasn’t worth the effort he was putting in.
With that, he waved Ross off and started to leave.

Clemency

Ross stumbled backwards slightly, glaring at Flash. Though Ross would not be brought back into reality until Flash had left the room, Ross was beginning to feel the slightest bit of regret for how he had acted. On the other hand, this was being imbalanced by his pure frustration at the Slytherin that stood in front of him. In a couple minutes, Ross would start finding that the comments had actually hurt; however, they would likely be pushed down inside of him without his 'important journal.'
Ross would make a witty remark back to the boy, but he was at a loss for words. Instead, he proceeded to stare with a mix of frustration and surprise on his face, his mouth agape. His arms were sort of in an uncomfortable position that were at his side, but seemed like something was certainly off.
As soon as he mentioned that he was not a mystery, Ross felt like laughing.
That would absolutely not change his mind.
Ross was absolutely still curious about this boy, but now felt a little nervous to push it. There was no way he was just a jerk all the time. That was just a rule of life, unless you were Eggman. But Flash was not Eggman, or at least that was what Ross thought.
And this was proved by his next statements. A moment of vulnerability that spoke for itself in ways Ross felt Flash could not have done on his own. Ross wanted to say something, but his frustration at the boy was like a gag or a trashy filter.
It seemed Flash and Ross were in the exact same mood: Unsure of what to do or say or what exactly just happened. Ross' entire mind just blanked, as two conflicting emotions had completely conquered his mind, Like how Russia and Germany worked to take over Poland: It just would not work out in the end.
As Flash began to leave, Ross was just stuck. All he could do was stare. Nothing really came to mind, but his aggression seemed to get the best of him as soon as he began to leave.
Right.. studies.. and you best focus on that whole family thing" he mumbled to himself as Flash left the room.
Oh how he hated him.
