What Do You Think You're Doing?
Early December 2025
Evening
The sun had dipped behind the mountains in the distance long ago, beckoning forth darkness ushered in by long-hanging stratus clouds. The castle loomed like something right out of a gloomy, perhaps forbidden, tome. Grey swirled above it, threatening to unleash a downpour of rain.
Suffice to say, it was prime time to take advantage of the not-quite-freezing temperatures and the not-totally-damp atmosphere while they lasted. Jessamine intended to do just that, especially considering that Asclepius had requested a walk (which, in itself, was odd, given that he lacked legs!). Taking the idea as something unique, Jessamine had shrugged and let the snake drape himself over her shoulders like an oversized scarf. He seemed particularly pleased by the happening, given that he kept attempting to roll over; she kept quietly hissing at him to stop, to no avail.
One day, she would be stronger. One day, she would not give in to the diva's every whim. Today was not that day.
What would have otherwise been a tranquil evening stroll turned into a halfhearted game of tug-of-war that persisted even as Jessamine exited the castle's interior and made her way out to the dark and dreary courtyard. The early December sunset had chased most of the students and faculty inside, leaving the space fairly deserted. A few students lounged about, cloaked in their winter wear, some of them huddling close together as if that would best the wind. For a moment, Jessamine thought of her husband, but a sharp – albeit unwanted – pang of homesickness made her aggressively think about anything that wasn’t homely. She ended up thinking of when she got lost on a trip to Prague from when she was younger.
Asclepius stretched out on her shoulders, causing her to huff and roll her eyes, which meant her gaze travelled across the courtyard and caught on the silhouette of yet another student. This one had a gigantic mass of blonde hair that must have been hell to keep up with. She looked vaguely familiar – perhaps Jessamine had seen her at one of the house Quidditch matches. Intrigued, Jessamine slinked closer, wholly intending to remain as silent as possible (Cat’s Grace). However, what the girl was doing with the Muggle object in her hands made Jessamine pause. She lifted her eyebrows and crossed her arms over her chest. 'Pray tell, just what do you think you’re doing with that lighter?'
The hint of lightness to her tone would suggest she was teasing rather than angry, although, if the girl was observant enough, she wouldn’t be able to miss a glimmer of concern in Jessamine’s eyes.

What Do You Think You're Doing?

10th December, 2025 - @Jessamine Lancaster
It marked the evening of a quite uneventful day, it was mid-week and the weekend had yet to bless her with its lack of things to do. Actually she would not mind having things to do, as long as said things had little things to do with school... or work in the headliner. She would not have minded some Quidditch practice as being a bother to Pax always made her day just a little bit better.
But alas, it was a rather boring evening, which was alright. She just had to be a little bit more creative to make it more interesting. Which is how she had found herself climbing one of the stone pillars, with a flat top. As she dragged herself up, nimbly dare she say, her fingers dug into the grooves of the stone, moss and debris coating her palm and nail bed by the time she made it to the top. She brushed said debris off on her shirt, as she propped herself up on the pillar, sitting comfortably with her legs dangling off the surface. Her hair spilled out around her in thick, barely manageable curls and locks that took up more space on the pillar than she herself did.
Now for her half-hazard picnic plan: she grabbed some biscuits, chocolate and the half-eaten jar of marshmallow fluff from her ginormous coat pockets. When she however withdrew the lighter from her pocket, her mood lightened a little more as she began just flicking it on and off, watching the little flame burst alight and die within a matter of seconds. The orange glow being quite fun to witness.
Of course if she had a bigger fire, she would certainly prefer that to make the smores or just, you know, to look at it. But right now this lighter would have to suffice. She was still busy just playing with the lighter, her brain captured by the fire in a little bit of awe as a sense of calm washed over her. Which made it all the more startling when a voice suddenly perked up!
Oonagh had not heard anyone approaching; nor had she really paid attention which might have explained why she reacted so harsh as she almost threw the lighter in shock as she flicked its switch to make the flame light up. "Whu-", she grabbed hold of the orange lighter at last second, before it could plummet the drop to the ground and peeked over the pillar's edge to spot someone who she was certain had to be a professor of some kind, as she was an adult. Oonagh only had a bird's eye view on the woman however, her feet dangling about on eye level of the red head.
"Something" was draped across the woman's shoulders, or rather someone. A scaly someone. Just to have a better view - and because her useless, apparently magic, stick would not provide it even if she asked it of it - she let the lighter flare to live again as she leaned over the pillar's edge once more. The lighter provided very little lighting, however it would have to suffice as she looked in awe at the reptile, it looked quite comfortable and fun. It flicked its tongue, as if tasting the air and Oonagh immediately leaned over the column, after dipping her finger into the marshallow fluff, offering the tasty treat to the scaly companion.
"Ah 'ave nae ####ing idea whit lighter ye be talkin' aboot," she claimed shamelessly, no bite behind her swear, whilst using said lighter to illuminate the courtyard just a little bit to allow her a proper view of the person she was talking to, more importantly, the reptile she was making an effort to befriend out of sheer coolness of befriending a snake.

The girl flicked the lighter once, twice. The flame illuminated her features, and Asclepius flicked his tongue at her, as if dazzled by the show of lights. For Jessamine's own part, her eyes widened, and her eyebrows lifted as the lighter almost, almost toppled towards her. The girl caught it at the last moment, and Jessamine gave a small tsk. 'Nice catch.'
Normally, she would have apologised for startling the girl. However, she was distracted by the array of foods surrounding the young blonde. Biscuits, chocolate, and some fluffy, white, surely sweet substance certainly didn't seem like the healthiest of foods – it was an array Jessamine hadn't seen before, especially for a picnic, which she associated more with tiny sandwiches and fruits. She squinted, intrigued, but found herself stepping backwards as the girl leaned closer, lighter in hand.
She had to ensure her mouth was firmly clamped shut to prevent herself from telling the girl to watch it. Jessamine had no desire to be burnt, even if Asclepius, with his apparent intrigue for the flames, thought otherwise. 'Shiiiiiiiiinyyyyyyyy,' the snake hissed. He leaned forward, which was very uncomfortable for Jessamine, given that he was still around her neck, and he flicked his tongue at the girl again. 'Why don't you give me shiny things?' he asked Jessamine, who continued to ignore him in favour of silently observing the girl.
Jessamine narrowed her eyes and tried not to make more of an offended expression as the girl offered Asclepius (and not her) the white substance. The snake licked it up in a heartbeat and rolled over so that his stomach faced upwards. 'SO GOOD. Is that homemade?' He tried to shimmy closer to the girl, but he was not strong enough to keep himself upright, and Jessamine had to hurriedly extend her arms so that he could coil himself on top of them and not fall to the ground. 'Can I have more?'
As quietly as she could, Jessamine murmured, 'You know she can't understand you,' to the snake. She did her best to look at the girl the entire time and not move her lips a lot. Hopefully, she would just think the hissing was coming from Asclepius, who was indeed a chatterbox.
'He seems to like you,' Jessamine started, but she paused and instead stared at the girl, dumbfounded, when the blonde spoke. What did she think she was, blind? The lighter was very obviously in her hand.
'Mhm. Sure. Just like I'm totally not holding a snake who seems to like... what is that white stuff, anyway? Is it sweet? Does it go well with the...' Jessamine squinted and lifted herself on the tiptoes to have a better look. '...chocolate, is that?' Maybe the lighter was to keep the chocolate from freezing – even if that wouldn't explain why the girl had appeared to be playing with it.
From where he was coiled on Jessamine's forearms, Asclepius stretched out towards the girl once again, and Jessamine sighed. 'I doubt any of the food you have is good for him, but he seems to want more. Or to want attention – he's quite the diva, in case you couldn't tell.'
