The day in particular had off and on light showers. Trickling raindrops would patter against the windows in class, making one aware of the world going on outside. Perhaps it was only Flash who was distracted. They were quiet, after all. The shadows from the clouds darkened the rooms intermittently, sometimes parting ways and filling the class once again with light. Flash could normally keep his attention perfectly while he sat, but his eyes drifted to the windows over and over again.
Once he got out of his classes, he went to the corridor he knew had open windows to the outside. He thought it would be nice to breath in some of the petrichor and watch the sky collide and shift around. He had no good reason to spend him time that way, but he thought it might satisfy some need of his. Lately, he was feeling pressure building up on top of him, multiplying with the passage of time. With the hellish attack in the Slytherin common rooms, everyone had been on edge. Even in his specific dorm, Jack and his ‘partner’ Selim always filled the dark room with some uncomfortable mood.
When he got there however, he was pleasantly surprised to find someone he recognized well. Not only recognized, but had specifically wanted to talk to more-- Alan. The boy who helped him avoid detention, as well as saved him from a much worse fate than the one he got. He had been extremely helpful and kind to him the last they met. It was more than a month ago. Flash had been so busy with his routines that he never ended up seeking him out.
Alan and the sound gentle rain outside, it was a pairing he was sure to enjoy. It was good that there were people out there who weren’t a headache to talk to.
”Good afternoon, Alan!” Flash waved to get his attention, not able to tell what he had been doing in the hall before then. ”Did you come to enjoy the rain as well?”

With Alan having gone to the library right after he was done with classes, he did not have the time for lunch yet and it was too late for it anyway. So he just quickly grabbed one thing he had found on the table, which happened to be a slice of bread and a tangerine, before he began to head out again. If this was not enough, he would have some sweets to keep him full until it was time for dinner and there usually were some biscuits that he could ask the house elves for, if it was really bad. Alan missed lunch a lot, because he usually just had other things he needed to take care of or simply was not feeling too hungry.
Right as he stepped out of the Great Hall into the corridors, he was spoken to by someone who must have recognized Alan and on top of that, it was someone who Alan also recognized in an instant. His eyes widened slightly, as he stepped towards the Slytherin, smiling at him. "Hi! F-Flash, wasn't it?", he asked, before looking out of one of the windows, when Flash commented on the weather. "Not originally, I came to get a snack a-after missing the actual lunch", he explained to the slightly taller kid, before smiling softly at the rain hitting softly against the glass. "B-but I wouldn't mind joining you, now that I have the food", he added, looking back at Flash finally, smiling brightly.
Alan slightly glanced around, making sure that no one was around to hear him speak, before he spoke up again, "H-How is your arm? I hope the st-sting healed well?", he wondered, tilting his head slightly. Alan had been worrying about that for a while now, so he was happy to finally get a chance to ask how it healed. He had no doubt that the sting should be healed by now, but he was no nurse and never got stung by a mosp... so he did not know whether it would need any kind of special attention or if time was enough for it to go away.

Alan greeted Flash back warmly, clearly remembering their meeting. Who could have forgotten it, it was quite a misadventure. When asked about his wound, Flash recalled the pain from early February. The first night had been excruciating, tossing and turning in bed, barely able to keep his thoughts straight. After that, the pain had mostly subsided.
”It healed just fine. Thank you for your concern. It only hurt for a day or two, then after about a week the swelling and itchiness went away. It wasn’t even the only injury I got that month… it’s been an eventful first year.” Flash started to muse on, filling Alan in on a tiny fraction of his life. When it came to talking about his exploits at school, he didn’t mind sharing it all.
He wished there were more positive things to say. It seemed instead the whole year had been about putting out fires, rather than getting things done. At least his studies were going well, and a good deal of the first year student population knew his name. Not all of their attention was equally valuable to him however. There were many more influential people he intended to scout, but so many of them were hard to get to. Flash had plenty of things occupying his time, for now he was still casting a wide net to see what it dragged in.
He expected Alan to be a part of that. He was older, knowledgeable in a subject he wouldn’t be able to attend for another two years, and a willing confidant. It was strange, he thought, for a Gryffindor to so readily be complicit in breaking the rules for a stranger, so he wondered why he did it, and how he could make sure he kept doing it for a long time to come.
”You know, maybe you wouldn’t like to answer this question, and that’s alright, but… why did you help me out back then?” Flash leaned against the wall with the windows, hearing the delicate pitter patter behind him, like someone lightly plucking at the keys of a piano. ”Not the warning, I mean. Why did you help me avoid the nurse? You could have easily just told a teacher about what happened, but you never did.”

Alan looked over to the the other boy, humming softly. "I'm glad it h-healed without complication", he offered and really, he was! If the Slytherin had been in pain for a while, he would have felt bad and probably ended up dragging him to the nurse. They surely would have been able to come up with an excuse, but it just had not been worth the risk since it was only one sting and Flash had insisted on letting it heal naturally.
He was a bit concerned about the fact, that the other kid described his first year as quite unpleasant in some moments and it made Alan wonder what must have happened to make Flash think like that. Hogwarts was supposed to be a pleasant place, a second home for many and the only home for some. So what was it that made it unpleasant and how did the other come to multiple injuries? "As in... accidents?", he asked, hoping it could be based on the fact that the other kid was accident prone or just careless. Alan was one himself, always getting into trouble without intending to.
He began to peel the tangerine, placing the peeling into a small paper back so that he could throw it away later. The last question took him a bit by surprise so he halted in his movement to glance at Flash. "Why would I rat you out to a professor,?", he questioned, furrowing his brows slightly. "You just tried to protect the o-other students...", he relaxed his face again and shrugged slightly. Alan was not sure what the other kid has expected for an answer, but this was the one he would get.
"It seemed like the right thing to do- calling a professor w-would have been smart, but by the time someone could have gotten hurt", he explained, before smiling slightly; curious and a tad bit mischievous maybe, "P-Probably for the same reason you walked into the forest instead of letting a grown-up deal with it, right?" Alan at least assumed that the other boy's intentions were well, because why else would he put himself in harms way just to possible protect students that ventured too close to the forest.

Flash smiled cheerfully at Alan’s innocent defense of his actions. Flash should have realized it sooner, he did it because he thought it was justified. The way Alan stumbled over his words, he would have thought that he made him nervous. The first time they met, it had been a lot going on at once, he didn’t expect the stutter to stay when things were calm. He had so much more he had to learn about him that he hardly knew where to start.
For one, it seemed Alan had a good impression of Flash, at least. A heroic image, even. He could get used to that. He imagined that Alan was a very honest kid, with the way he answered the question right away, unafraid of how he might come off. The stutter was more than likely something he couldn’t control, rather than a sign of nervousness.
”Well... that’s how you see it, is it?” Flash thought quietly to himself, trying to figure out the pattern of speech that fit Alan’s personality. It was hard to nail down, he seemed open to anything. ”You’ve got a sense of urgency, and justice. I can respect that. Not just anyone would agree, you know?”
Flash probed the line of thinking, whether it was true or not, it would invoke some kind of defense or agreement. It was best early on to make broad, bold statements about someone, it gave them room to elaborate on in detail themselves, instead of Flash trying to pick at them for scraps.
”Some people are so afraid of doing anything dangerous that they turn a blind eye when things go wrong. I think it’s better to be vigilant. People need to stand up and help each other if they want their lives to improve.” Flash was being honest about his feelings, though he colored it with the heroism he was implied to have.

The third year looked over to the Slytherin, tilting his head slightly. How he saw it? Alan was not entirely sure how to see the situation, but it also was nothing he felt the need to worry about. In his eyes he did the right thing and since they did not get into trouble at all, he also was not worried about the rule break any more. Had there been much to worry about in the first place? Sure they probably did a mistake, but that was part of life and Alan was sure he would not need to justify himself. He was sure a lot of other people would have acted similar.
”You’ve got a sense of urgency, and justice. I can respect that. Not just anyone would agree, you know?", he heard the other boy say and Alan narrowed his eyes in thought. "Uh...", Alan was not quite sure how to reply to that and decided to simply shrug it off. He was not sure what Flash wanted to hear from him now. Those were big words, especially from someone he did not quite know well yet. Alan just smiled nervously at the other, before adding on to his 'reply' he had given previously. "W-well, thanks?", he brushed back a strand of hair, before tilting his head again. He was not even sure whether it had been meant as a compliment, but it sounded like one and Alan gladly took it as such; relaxing slightly. Th Slytherin seemed nice, Alan would love to talk more to him, get to know him and maybe end up as friends along the way.
Alan liked what the other kid said next and nodded slightly along, while Flash talked. "Y-yeah... I agree with that, but i-it's also good to know one's limits. I wouldn't have minded looking for a p-professor if you didn't offer to go into the forest-", he mentioned, his smile widening slightly, "So I honestly just stood by, y-you did the work a-and I just stood aside to help!" Alan was not quite sure whether the other had noticed, but what happened at the forest was also something not anyone else would have done. Risking their health to ensure the safety of other students.
"I-If anyone has a sense of urgency and justice, I w-would say it's you!"

Generous, humble, valorous. Flash began to sort through the meaning behind Alan’s words. He listened to him intently, his chin resting snugly in his thumb and forefinger. It seemed the path Flash chose was a fruitful one, as Alan seemed to visibly loosen up. He could tell, Alan was a friendly sort, he wouldn’t be fighting Flash off like so many wizards seemed intent on doing.
Flash always got along best with people who simply accepted him at face value. He had no idea why so many people felt like they needed more than that. After all, Flash was doing all the work in making the conversation flow seamlessly. Making the other person feel attended to and cared for. Flash made sure he made the people he talked to feel singled out, as if they were the center of his universe.
Still, Alan tried to turn it back on him. He was more used to this now, after getting to know a few Hufflepuffs. Some people were more shy, and would rather the relationship appear more balanced. Flash could accommodate that just as well as showering someone with attention. The trick in that case was to not come on too strong.
”Thank you, Alan. I’m sure my parents would be happy to hear that’s what my classmates thought of me.” Flash closed his eyes, thinking about it. ”I won’t hound you with praise, but I’ll just say that you shouldn’t sell yourself short.”
Flash chuckled to himself a bit, thinking about how the older boy was still so much shorter than him. He hadn’t intended the joke, but unintentionally tickled his own sense of humor. Being a formative time in all their lives with the learning of magic, the children at Hogwarts seemed a lot less fussed about their physical growth than his classmates in Durham had. Especially among the boys, it always seemed to be a competition to compare heights and measure the change in their voices. It was the silly kind of thing he never paid much attention to. Granted, puberty had come rather early for him, so he didn’t see it as anything special. His mind was the part of him he was interested in growing.
Alan, however, was probably more of a normal kid than he was. "Sorry, I was thinking about that day. When I look back on it, it's kinda funny. An interesting memory, at least."

The third crumpled the paper bag together, once he had finished peeling the tangerine and shoved the rubbish into the pocket of his robe, until he could find a place to throw it away. He proceeded to take a bite out of the slice of toast, before he turned back to speak to Flash again; not before his mouth was empty again.
"You are g-gonna tell your parents?", he asked, slight confusion visible on his face. He understood giving report to parents about how school went, but he usually did not repeated compliments or similar he got from other students to his parents. He usually just told them stuff he deemed important to tell them, but maybe for Flash this was important? Was it? He thought about a bit, before the thought was switched with another flood of thoughts. He hadn't send an owl to his parents, maybe he should... a lot has happened and he was sure that his parents would like an update. He has gotten his letter a couple of days ago, he would have yet to reply to it. It was about the usual stuff, questions about how school was going and if he found more friends. If he had any troubles and whether his grades were decent. He shook his head slightly, even though he was referring to his thoughts, he actually did indeed shake his head.
When Flash mentioned that he should not sell himself short and, Flash chuckled lightly as a follow up, making Alan snort lightly, before he shook his head slightly in amusement. "D-Don't worry, I w-won't", he reassured the slightly taller boy, taller by around an inch so not even that much taller. Then again he was probably younger than Alan was, by how much the Gryffindor did not know however, but that would possibly change with his next question, "Uh- h-how old are you by the way? L-Like what year are you in?", he asked, glancing over at the boy, as he finished the slice of toast in a few bites, the untouched tangerine still in his other hand; as he just listened to the reply the Slytherin gave him.
Alan frowned lightly, when the other kid mentioned their first meeting being a fun memory, but then his frown softened and turned into a small smile eventually. "W-Well I'm glad think of it as such, now that you're not in pain anymore; it was nice indeed! I have never actually seen a mosp before, so that was quite so-something!", he answered with a lopsided smile. He loved seeing new creatures and this had been quite an experience. He was able to say that seeing those mosps once was enough for him, clearly not wanting a repetition. "What were you doing so c-close to the forest anyway?", he wondered, surely the flowers could not have been the only reason, right? You would first have to step close to the forest to see they were growing there... that would mean the Slytherin already had been there before starting to pick the bouquet or had been there before and just went back because of the flowers. Either way, the reason made Alan curious. It might as well have been because Flash had been curious about the forest, but still, Alan wouldn't know this without asking, so that was what he did.

Alan seemed to be enjoying the conversation. He stuttered more when he tried to reply quickly, but Flash didn’t mind it. One of the tools at his disposal was accepting people as they were, so long as who they were was useful. There were a lot of people, especially children, who were constantly seeking acceptance from their peers. They’re confused, away from their homes, and they don’t have anyone to tell them that they’re making the right choices.
To Flash, accepting people like that was easy. He knew what kinds were the ones you could depend on, who would defend him. Thoughts like that ran through his head subconsciously, part of him sitting inside himself, watching the show.
”No, I won’t really tell them.” Flash chuckled a bit, his mood still light from laughing earlier. Alan snorted himself, the two seeming to easily get on each others’ good sides.
Seeming to have caught on to his bad word play, Alan alluded to the fact that neither of them knew even simple facts about each other, they had really only just started talking normally that day. Flash could correct this quickly.
”I’m sorry, where are my formalities, we met in a strange way, so we haven’t properly been introduced. Flash straightened up and offered his hand to shake, which Alan accepted deftly, as though trained in etiquitte himself. ”I’m Flash Holmwood, I’m a first year Slytherin here. I actually had a birthday recently, so I’m 12-years-old now.
That was right, he was getting older. Time always seemed to go by so quickly. As his mind drifted a bit, he glanced out the window. Alan was talking about their first meeting, and about the mosps, but Flash couldn’t help but notice two very familiar faces walking by. It was distracting immidiately, because it was a notorious bully walking side-by-side with a shy, bookish girl. He recognized them both, but never knew them to talk. It was suspicious, something could be happening right that moment. His pleasant conversation would have to wait.
”Alan, I’m so sorry… but…” Flash needed to excuse himself, but doing so quickly and gracefully at the same time would require a moment of thought.
He tracked the pair with his eyes, making sure of their path as he shuffled through his thoughts. What would Alan accept? Of course.
”I just saw a pair together that worries me. I think a girl might be in trouble.” His eyes stayed train but for a moment to glance back at Alan-- make a connection. ”I have to go and make sure she’s okay.”
Flash’s truth was just that he wanted to know what was happening, but that didn’t change the fact that Alan’s truth could also be real. Maybe the day would end with him helping the girl, anything was possible. Either way he wanted to know why they were together. Something was off.

Alan relaxed a little more, when the other kid reassured him, that he would not actually talk to his parents about what Alan said. It was not like it would bother him, if Flash chose to tell his parents, but there was just something weird, if someone would tell your every step and word to someone else, as if you would have to be more careful with the way one spoke. Alan did not really want to hold his thoughts back, he was quite the honest person, if he could have it that way. At least that was how he himself saw it, but he was sure there were other people who might agree; not that Alan would bother to ask though.
"Oh, it was? Happy belated birthday, F-Flash!", he said, as he shook the other kids hand. Alan was slightly surprised that the other kid was only a first year. Based on the way he talked and behaved, Alan had been sure he must have been at least a second year. Then again he was curious or maybe naive enough to go to the forest on his own without researching it enough, so maybe he was not all that mature with the decisions he made. Alan was quite sure that the other kid however would be a nice person to have a chat with. The handshake felt pleasant, better than those who were awkward or just weird. It happened a lot and it should not be that difficult but apparently for a lot of students finding the right pressure for a handshake and the amount of time spend on it, seemed t be a miracle. Alan had been schooled in such etiquette from a young age on, as it was important for when his parents had guests over or meetings to attend to in which Alan had to accompany them.
"It's a pleasure to m-meet you, Flash.", he mentioned as he withdrew his hand gently, letting it rest at his side, while looking up into Flash's face. "Alan Vanes, th-third year of House Gryffindor and thirteen y-years of age!", he gave as proper introduction, accompanied with a light smile that showed a bit of teeth.
For a bit the mood seemed light and pleasant, but soon enough that would change. Alan had no idea what has happened, but he knew something changed, when the Slytherin boy spoke up, apologizing to him.
”Alan, I’m so sorry… but…”, the Gryffindor heard and glanced up curiously at the taller kid, wondering what had caused the sudden shift of mood in their conversation. Did something happen or was there something urgent the Slytherin had forgotten about and just remembered? Did they have to part ways already? Alan was waiting for the younger boy to elaborate, which would possible soon follow and as predicted, the Slytherin swiftly followed up with an explanation, that made Alan furrow his brows. Alan glanced around the corridor, trying to find the two students the Slytherin was talking about and when he caught sight of them, his eyes slightly narrowed, before his gaze softened again, when he glanced at Flash. "Do y-you need help?", he wondered, before asking him what was up, "Wh-why would she be in trouble?", Alan wondered out loud, not having seen either of them around and not knowing of their reputation. Alan waited for an explanation, willing to help the girl and well, help Flash once again.
