Sad, or Just Hungry? Scientists Can't Tell
@Marla Quinlan
The sky (and this filled him with a, for a teenager, embarrassing amount of excitement) was positively pink. It had turned this shade at around nine in the morning, shortly after the sun rose, and it was the sight of this change that had originally motivated Scott to leave the window of the boys’ dormitory, and head for the dewy grounds in the first place. Motivated, he’d thought then, solely by the natural joy every kid felt on a Saturday morning.
This was not true. As would’ve been made evident to anyone who knew him by the fact that in doing this he had, without realising it, skipped breakfast... That was not something Scott did when he was happy. No. That was something that happened only when a weight had already been placed in the pit of his stomach, pulling down at him with guilt or anxiety and away from any such details as food... #angst
But it was far too early in the morning for a young boy to realise what kind of misery he’s supposed to be under, anyway: so when he skipped over the wet grass he had a smile on his face.
He was heading for the quidditch training pitch. When the weather was nice, which it was (only a hat and a pair of obnoxious-looking leather gloves needed), that was one of his favourite places to be. He’d never fly himself, but sitting up in the stands, looking over the court, still somehow made him feel more at home than, say, the library ever could. If he was very lucky, then other students would be out practicing before a game, or just flying around the green for fun, and he’d watch them from afar.
Quidditch players, he’d found, rarely minded an audience.
So. Taking a seat as high up as the stands went, Scott had a view of both the whole court and the Great Lake that lay beyond it. Sadly there weren’t any students flying at the moment (presumably most were having a long weekend breakfast, as he usually did himself) but this didn’t bother him too much. He could easily imagine the players himself. In fact, he’d seen enough quidditch games in his life to do that very well... But it was then, when he caught himself going so far as to imagine a quidditch game in order only to distract himself, that Scott began to realise why he’d actually been so keen to go here in the first place. As in, he started remembering the letter he’d received the previous night.
It had been from his oldest brother, Silas, and had concerned the one thing that could kill the excitement Scott was otherwise overcome by with every letter he received from him. It was a rare occasion. Why’d it have to touch upon something so numbing?
Don’t try and talk to him, it had said.
Scott’s stomach growled as he sighed. A growing boy shouldn’t miss breakfast.

Sad, or Just Hungry? Scientists Can't Tell
[quote]One of the things Marla adored most about Hogwarts was the air. It was small, of course. But feeling the Scotland highland wind on her lips was something she didn't know she craved until a fateful day in September of 2018 when she first stepped on the grounds. There was nothing more refreshing than popping a peppermint in her mouth as a gust of it went by, blowing her hair out of her face.
She didn't exactly know how much she needed it until she returned to England for winter break. While it was technically nice over there, Marla didn't associate the tea obsessive nation with positive memories. After all, she wasn't a masochist. Who would enjoy being reminded they were destined for failure since the day they opened their eyes? Yeah, exactly. But even before Hogwarts, all of the girl's happy memories comfortably reside in Scotland to this day. Sunny days spent in her uncle's cottage were nothing short of dreamlike. The air was always crisp and put goosebumps on her skin, though the sun was always out and watching the wildflowers dance in the wind on a good day is something Marla always missed. A grin was involuntarily spreading on her face from the thought of her home, until it hit her.
Would she ever be able to see her uncle again, after the incident in December? God, she couldn't even call him that anymore. She glanced down at her veins, thinking about the blood that pumped through them. The blood that wasn't related to Elias Quinlan in the slightest. At this point, she had given up. Marla had been lied to a numerous amount of times, and to think that this was the end was simply a humorous sliver of hope.
The short girl did look somewhat lost, a spark of wonder always finding its way into her brown eyes. But her walk to the quidditch training pitch on this cold February morning was intentional. She had heard that it was good to deal with grief and loss by staying in touch with nature. Keeping yourself grounded. While literally, going on brooms and soaring around in the sky was not staying grounded.. It was one of Marla's favorite activities. Whether watching or playing, quidditch was a vibrant passion that hadn't swayed for the Gryffindor in her two years at Hogwarts. It was safe to say that this was her happy place– or as close to happy one could get in a situation like this.
It was much too early to start flying, and Marla didn't feel like having to deal with a whiny professor giving her detention, so she began to make her way up the stands. Which, now that she thought about it, were definitely not designed for people standing at 4'4 in height. She tripped over every other step, and probably looked like she had two left feet, or whatever the saying was. Looking up, the first thing that caught her eye was a familiar blonde boy wearing a prefects badge.
Squinting at the boy for a better view, she quickly realized that it was resident Mr. Perfect, Scott Alexander. She suppressed a disappointed groan, instead subtly rolling her eyes. Not that she ever wanted to see Scott, but did it have to be right now? The last thing she wanted to do was look at the prefect with the perfect grades, the perfect life, and probably perfect curvy abs, or whatever popular people had these days. Not to mention, she had forgotten breakfast, the only thing that the poor girl looks forward to in the morning. Or in the day at all– so she'd rather not feel violently envious at this very moment in time.
"Oh, hey Scott," She quickly stated, sitting a few seats down from him. As she passed the boy, a loud gargle emitted from her stomach. Her face went hot and she laughed it off. "Sorry, I skipped breakfast. Hopefully that was the worst of it," She shrugged and quickly went silent, hoping that he would leave her alone. All she wanted to do was have some time to herself, and this was what she got? What cruel world did they live in? She played with her fingers, impatiently waiting for Scott to start (and finish) talking so her mind could go silent for the first time in ages. But sadly, knowing him, that probably wouldn't be the case. At least the promise of lunch in a few hours was keeping her sane. It was the little things.

Across the dark and bluish-green grass, there seemed to be travelling a small red dot... Scott had been studying the ground below with a sort of fading enthusiasm before he noticed it, and was therefor more than happy to instead follow this new speck of colour, as it struggled its way up the stands and towards him through the otherwise desaturated winter world.
Red's a pretty colour too, Scott reminded himself importantly. Lately he'd felt it necessary to make sure and remember those things.
As it came closer to him, the dot (or what had once only been one to him), brilliantly revealed itself as nothing less than a vibrant head of red hair, belonging to a girl. What was even better, Scott soon realised, was that this particular head of hair belonged to somebody he knew! This, he felt, was very fortunate, because there was nothing Scott wanted to do more at the moment than completely disregard his growing suspicion that his subconscious might have brought him there in the means of solitude and contemplation... Because he wasn't going to fall for it.
"Oh, hey Scott,"
"Good morning!"
Scott beamed over at her as the girl reached his row, and recognised him. It was quite obvious that she hadn't spotted him before, when she'd been making her way against the wind, so Scott naturally excused her somewhy troubled expression, and moved his legs to the side so she could pass him.
The girl was Marla Quinlan: a small, freckled, Quidditch-playing Scot in her second year. That was all Scott flattered himself by claiming he knew, because other than the occasional times he'd see her in their common room, he could only really remember Marla from the prefect duty they both shared a while back... Why had she come here? He'd hoped, before, for some quidditch players to arrive and play, but she didn't seem to be planning on it. He supposed he couldn't blame her, anyway... didn't even want to imagine what flying in February cold was like. He readjusted his cap and rubbed his hands together at the mere thought.
"Sorry, I skipped breakfast. Hopefully that was the worst of it,"
As she'd passed him to occupy a space farther away on the bench, Marla's stomach had growled- and now she was apologising for it. Scott felt the corners of his mouth twitch into a discreet grin before he answered her.
"Oh, you and me both. The breakfast, I mean. Don't ask me how, because I don't know, but I managed to forget all about it! Found myself making my way out here without as much as a piece of toast in my stomach.... That doesn't happen. I feel I must've been possessed, or something similar, in my sleep, by an adventurous spirit! Though I suppose most of our sensible teachers would disagree with me.
Well, I say adventurous. I've only really ended up here, haven't I? Enjoying the view, currently. And your company."
Scott smiled and tipped his head towards his surroundings, the sky in particular. He couldn't possibly be the only one to appreciate it, could he? Even though the question of wether or not he was only using it as means to distract himself was still gnawing at him... She didn't have to know that though, Scott felt, because he wasn't lying. The sky was pretty that morning. That was true.
"What about you, then? I know you play Quidditch," Scott gestured towards the court. "Does your team know you're not having your eight meals a day? Or whatever it is you're supposed to have now..." Scott was recalling how Silas would need to eat almost twice as much as his two brothers when he still lived at home. "Or are you one of those players that train on an empty stomach for motivation? Because I think that sounds like torture."

Sad, or Just Hungry? Scientists Can't Tell
[quote]Scott Alexander was like cancer. You kill it in one spot, it just pops up in another. Of course, she didn't quit her positions to get away from Scott– but even after resigning from prefect and the paper, she still saw him way more than wanted. He was just.. So happy. And how? How could someone be that cheerful, all the time? It was nothing short of infuriating. Everyone liked him. Why? Because he was a giant kiss ass to absolutely every single human he laid his eyes on? It made her want to tear her hair out.
So if she heard the seemingly perfect boy, with the somehow perfect hair in very windy, imperfect weather (seriously, how did he keep it like that all the time?) called Marla a red dot... It's safe to say that she would pick the poor, unsuspecting Gryffindor and chuck him into the oblivion. Or at least attempt to, considering how scrawny she was. It wasn't doing her any favors skipping breakfast either. But for some strange reason, every single time Marla thought about putting even a morsel of food within an inch of her mouth, she felt like puking. So whatever this mystery funk was, it had to be pretty bad to get Marla to stop eating, since food was currently on the top of her list of redeemable things about Hogwarts.
However, Scott was not on that list. In fact, she wished more than anything that he would just shut his mouth. And normally she was very confrontational about being bothered, but for some reason, she couldn't bring herself to be upfront and mean to him. "Yes, it is quite daring of you to even suggest walking outside without a piece of toast..." She exclaimed jokingly, a devilish smirk making its way on her face. And while Scott was excruciatingly annoying, she felt a twinge of guilt for poking at him like that when he mentioned enjoying her company. Her face softened for a second, but reverted back to its previous expression. He didn't need her sympathy– didn't he already have everything else anyways? A loving family, friends, money, prefect... Whether she was nice to him or not didn't matter.
A gust of wind made its way through the pitch, causing the small Gryffindor to shiver and rub her hands together for a sliver of a chance that she didn't get frostbite. They were raw and red from the cold, but at least the pain kept her somewhat distracted from her stomach begging for breakfast. She took a glance at Scott, who was looking in the direction of the sun. She glanced in its direction and squinted, letting her hand hover over her eyes so it wasn't as bright. This was the first time she was ever up here in the morning– and she regretted not coming sooner. The sky was gorgeous. As the sun eagerly rose, it brought several vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows with it as they blended harmoniously in the sky. She could have looked at it forever, but her eyes began to tear up and it was getting a little more than painful. Plus, between her stomach and hands, it would suck to have to deal with being blind along with that. So she reluctantly averted her eyes back to the wooden surface of the benches.
"Yeah, quidditch is pretty much the only thing I have going for me right now," She responded, swinging her legs back and forth as they hung a few inches away from the floor of the seats. "Eight meals? What himbo would eat eight meals a day? At that point, there isn't a chance my broom could carry me," She laughed to herself. Beaters probably ate more than usual because of them kind of being the tanks of the team, but she had to be small and swift to score goals for her team as a chaser. "I don't really think about how much food I eat. I could never actually starve myself like that though," If Marla happened to starve herself, she'd probably be six feet under right now. The girl eats like a pig almost daily and still resembles an angry, red twig.
"So, why do you care about quidditch stuff? I thought people like you cared about when the next dumb magic hair gel was coming out... Or whatever," Did they even make magic hair gel? Probably. There are a lot of extremely strange things in the magic world, the more tame details were forgettable sometimes.

Sad, or Just Hungry? Scientists Can't Tell
Now what was all this?"So, why do you care about quidditch stuff? I thought people like you only cared about when the next dumb magic hair gel was coming out... Or whatever,"
Leaving the sky with his eyes briefly, Scott looked confusedly over to Marla again where she was sitting an awkward way away. He was probably being very silly, but Scott couldn't help but feel like the shivering girl to his right had just said something quite snide to him.
Perhaps she really was hungry. People could behave like that, he knew, when they were... Still. Magic hair gel? Scott didn't even know if that was a thing. And he felt like he would.
"Oh, uh... no." He tried, chuckling nervously and looking back to the sky above. Scott admitted to not really knowing his housemate that well, but it still wasn't very easy to hide his surprise at how she was sounding. Ironic and annoyed. Two quite uncomfortable attitudes, in Scott's experience... He'd need to change that. "No magic hair gel for me. This," he quickly swung his head forwards and back to make it swoop dramatically away from his face (admittedly making it look very messy and much less nice than before, but pantomime is pantomime). "-is all natural."
Immediately grimacing a bit to himself at the sound of it, Scott hoped that Marla would realise he was joking. But at the same time, he didn't quite want to turn and see for himself- afraid he'd be met only with another unamused glare. ...Was something the matter? She had said before that quidditch was the only thing she had going for her. When people said that, it didn't usually mean much good.
Turning carefully again, Scott gave her a crooked smile as this thought occurred to him.
"As for the quidditch, I may surprise you by revealing that I am, in fact, a fan. In spite of what my hair might tell you. Perhaps not as invested in our dear school tournaments as I'd like to be, but the sport itself has played a significant role in my life. Not that I play, I'm not very good... The Ballycastle Bats, that's our team! My family's, I mean. If you wish to criticise them, you're probably better off doing it now and in front of me rather than any of the rest of us. I'm no fanatic, but my father and brothers certainly are. Insult Finbar Quigley and they'll have your head for it, that sort of thing..."
Laughing now, he added: "One of them's a player. Silas.", because in all honesty, that was the biggest reason as to why Scott was interested in quidditch. Which is what she had asked. Though he tended to mention it a lot less frequently nowadays, seeing as how annoyed people got when Ben used to do it every other minute.
Not shying away from looking at Marla this time, Scott tilted his head curiously to the side. She was looking down, towards the wood of the stands, and shivering slightly about her arms and hands. He hadn't exactly been able to lie so well to himself as to say he was having a terrific morning himself, but Marla most certainly wasn't. ...It couldn't be because of him, could it? No. She'd walked to the Quidditch Training Pitch on a Saturday morning without any breakfast, and Scott knew better than anyone that this was a sign of rooted upset.
Maybe, though this is not to say he wouldn't try, Scott couldn't help with that. He could do other stuff!
"Are you cold?"
Scott quickly removed his own gloves, black leather with yellow thread around the wrists, and held them over for her with an outstretched arm. It was a wild shot with anyone. Even Ami would pass on the offer every other time he made it (though this was admittedly because it depended on wether she remembered being vegan that day)... But in the end, Marla was cold and Scott wasn't. Surely this couldn't be anything but simple.
"You can borrow them. They're very comfortable! Maybe a little too big for you but..."

Sad, or Just Hungry? Scientists Can't Tell
[quote]Everything was going south quite rapidly. And Marla didn't know if she should be satisfied or worried about that. If this boy was going to get all pissy about a simple comment regarding magic hair gel– then he probably deserved it anyway. As soon as the words had left her mouth, a look of confusion plagued Scott's face. What? Did he expect everyone to love him immediately? She felt annoyance brewing in her gut, and her stomach begging her for food wasn't making it any better.
"Is it really?" She asked, her question enlaced with a sort of mocking humor in response to Scott's... Dramatic swooping of his hair. It was a rather horrific sight, and couldn't place if he was being serious or not. Then again, she had no room to talk. While Marla wasn't the grimiest person ever, her hair was quite greasy at the time, and Scott was simply having mercy on her for not pointing that out. "So... You just popped out like that then, I guess?" Sideyeing him to see his reaction, she suppressed a smirk on her face to the discomfort that she predicted would soon be radiating off of the poor Gryffindor's face.
There was a strange silence afterward, the only sounds cutting through the thick awkwardness being the occasional wind and birds chirping atop of the trees. Until Scott Alexander opened his mouth again. While she was expecting this, it still would take some getting used to. The boy's voice was kind of like... When you're trying to focus on something really important but there's music that's making your ears ache. Though, the moment that the word quidditch escaped his lips, Marla turned to listen.
"The Ballycastle Bats? They have a cool mascot, I'll give you that– but didn't they win like, almost thirty times? It's more fun when you have to work for it or whatever, y'know? The Pride of Portree is the best team in the UK, though. Us Scots do not claim the Banchory Bangers. They're a disappointment. I don't think I've met a singular person that actually likes them. It's quite the opposite for me, my family doesn't care much for quidditch besides me and my uncle. I basically tried out for chaser to be like Catriona McCormack, don't tell anyone that, though. When I say it out loud it sounds creepy," For someone that got on Scott's case about rambling, it's quite ironic that as soon as he brought up her favorite sport, she could go on and on about it. Even if she didn't necessarily like the bloke. Due to being too tired to dig her grave, she didn't add that Finbar Quigley was absolutely, positively, overrated, and a sub-par beater. But she was definitely thinking it.
And as if Scott's life couldn't get any more conventionally perfect: his brother was a quidditch player. A storm of jealousy and regret crept into her mind, though she was most definitely not going to be a kiss ass to meet some dumb Ballycastle Bats jock. It wasn't fair. Why did it seem like everyone had it figured out but her? At this point, Marla was having some sort of identity crisis. Between her entire childhood, winter break... And pretty much everything else that's unfolded in between. How could Scott just sit there, like the happiest kid in the world? It wasn't fair.
Turning to the boy she envied more than she should, he had asked Marla if she was cold. She was, in fact, freezing her ass off. How could she not be? She was barely wearing any robes and no hat, gloves, anything. Plus, the wind was absolutely brutal today. It was a mystery how she hasn't frozen to her demise by now. "Just a little. The wind is pretty strong today, so," She stated, trying to hide how bad she needed a blanket, hat, anything right now. And before she knew it, the boy had outstretched his arm, with now barren hands, offering his gloves to her. In normal circumstances, she would have declined anything that had to do with Scott's boujee gloves.
But as soon as the comment about them probably being too big came out of his mouth, she pulled them out of his hands and hastily put them on. Her whole fingers couldn't even fit into the gloves correctly, the ends of the fabric hanging down sadly, but blinded by denial and embarrassment, Marla put her hand up to his face, with her own being extremely red. "They fit! See?! They fit– they fit perfectly. I'm not small. See?" She shoved them even closer to his face, just to get it embedded in that thick skull of his.
Putting her hands back on her lap, she realized that while they weren't much, the gloves were helping her not shiver as much. "Thanks," she said quickly, almost ashamed of being grateful for something the boy had given her. "So, are you like... a millionaire or something? I couldn't even afford these if I was still a prefect. Then again, I don't really spend my galleons on clothing, I usually waste it all on books, so maybe I should start... Not doing that. I forget how brutal Scotland's weather can be, even in the spring," it seemed that Marla had forgotten about her main objective: antagonizing Scott Alexander as much as possible. It was annoying that he had called her small, but maybe he was just blissfully ignorant to everything around him. It wasn't her fault that he was most likely a little daft.
"Is it really?" She asked, her question enlaced with a sort of mocking humor in response to Scott's... Dramatic swooping of his hair. It was a rather horrific sight, and couldn't place if he was being serious or not. Then again, she had no room to talk.
"your loss, baby !!"

Sad, or Just Hungry? Scientists Can't Tell
Scott couldn't help but feel a slight sense of achievement as the girl next to him began to soften up. Quidditch, apparently, had been the right thread to pick up on his part. She loved the sport, it seemed, though that much was to be expected from someone who played it... And her opinions seemed to him well-informed. While it of course wouldn't have made a single difference to him, what team she'd said she supported, it amused him to be reminded of his brothers and father by the way she reasoned. He'd usually sit quiet and listen while a conversation like that would spark over the dinner table... and throw his mother some sparing looks as she tried to follow a single word that was being said.
"Catriona McCormack? No, I don't blame you. She's a legend to anyone. Silas used to have these really old posters of her on his walls when he still lived at home, even though he didn't support her team. She was the only Scot allowed up there..."
Scott chuckled quietly, and added: "Dad had one too, but Mother made him take it down."
Then, as if in order to only amplify his sense of success, Marla had taken up on his offer. After admitting that she was indeed as cold as she looked, the girl had snatched the gloves straight out of his hand and put them on demonstratively- waving her hands in his face as if every cell in her body was trying to prove a million points.
"Aye. I see...""They fit! See?! They fit– they fit perfectly. I'm not small. See?"
Scott chuckled and shook his head at her. There didn't seem to be a way of foreseeing her reactions to just about anything, in the end... And now she was looking a bit embarrassed. He wondered why she'd been so keen on asserting some kind of independence. He couldn't possibly flatter himself enough to believe that she was intimidated, because that would've been ridiculous...
There was something else.
"They fit you perfect." He was trying not to sound sarcastic. "And they suit you." He managed it.
Marla thanked him, eventually, and settled her hands in her lap again. She was shaking significantly less now, and Scott was glad- because he greatly suspected her previous snide to have been due to the cold at least in part. He knew she was hungry, too, but surely there'd be a difference.
Oh."So, are you like... a millionaire or something?"
Scott shuffled uncomfortably in his seat, and gave the air around him an embarrassed smile as he listened to the rest of Marla's reasoning. He never liked that question, never been able to answer it properly. To be fair to Marla, though, no one had asked it quite so bluntly before... But it still rang difficult bells.
Scott started scratching the back of his head with his now bare fingers, and waited for her to finish by mentioning the weather. Was she giving him an out? That, he thought, was very kind of her. But it would've felt painfully obvious and awkward to take her up on it.
"Well..."
You don't talk about wealth, do you?
"My mother bought them, while she was in Egypt."
At least you're not supposed to. His mother had taught him that, though quite hypocritically so since she'd done it wearing a double-stranded pearl necklace. Apparently, showing it wasn't a sin... In fact it was encouraged. As could be told by the clothes she bought them all.
"-A couple of years ago. They were originally for Ben but he didn't want them, so they became mine. They only fit me now, though. Used to be too big.
We're not millionaires."
Suddenly he felt like he shouldn't have added that last part, which he'd done embarrassingly fast, because the truth was: he had no idea of whether or not it was true... How could he know? You don't talk about wealth. Only of percentages, estates and land that should or should not belong to whom or whom... That's all he could overhear sometimes, in heated arguments through fires or letters read aloud, and so far it meant nothing to him. He preferred it that way, too, since he had more than a slight suspicion that the understanding of money would only make his current familiar situation appear even darker to him.
Scott cleared his throat and removed his hand from his head, looking back at her with a sheepish grin.
"Besides, books aren't a bad thing to spend your money on! Not at all! I'm sure both my parents would prefer them to be a priority of mine... in fact, they say so.
What I mean is, gloves keep you warm, is all."

Sad, or Just Hungry? Scientists Can't Tell
[quote]As soon as Scott began talking about how his brothers had posters of Catriona McCormack on their walls, Marla stifled a small laugh and looked at the prefect. "Catriona McCormack is, what– like fifty now? And your brothers have posters of her on their walls? I'm not trying to judge preferences but... Assuming how old they are, that's a bit ambitious," she smiled, turning away and snickered again at the thought of it. Maybe they had pictures of her when she was younger– but she couldn't shake the image of some twenty-year-old boys having a poster of practically a relic on their walls. Whatever floats their boat.
Watching Scott laugh as she tried to prove that the gloves fit fine when they didn't was somewhat irritating, but she did come off a little strong. Thankfully for him, Marla couldn't read minds. If she knew that the thought of her being intimidated by him even crossed her mind, because while she probably couldn't do anything crazy with her being so... Vertically challenged, Marla would at least throw a few wild cards his way. With him being so tall and probably much stronger than her, he'd probably not flinch at all. But she'd at least make him somewhat insecure, or something. "Nah, they don't really suit me. They don't match my robes whatsoever. But I'd rather be mismatched than lose a few fingers 'cause of some stupid wind." She responded, playing with the flimsy, loose ends on the finger compartments of the gloves where her hands wouldn't fit. Her face went warm, glancing at the other boy's hands. Her's weren't small, his were just ginormous. It didn't mean that what he said before about them not fitting was true. After all, he did just say they fit perfectly. But in Marla's experience, it's easier to lie than people might think. It wasn't a big deal in the long run, but if he ever called her small again, Scott would be in for at the least an outburst.
Okay, even Marla could admit that the millionaire comment was somewhat out of line. Sometimes it would slip her mind that she came from two rich pure-blood families that preferred subjects of that sort wouldn't be brought up, but she'd never forgotten. You didn't have to be loaded to afford stuff like that– just financially stable. Scott paused for a minute, obviously uncomfortable, and Marla repressed the regret that started to flood her thoughts. What if they had problems with money or something? And she just brought up some stuff that he didn't want to think about? There was always the chance that he actually was a millionaire and wanted to seem like an angel or something that didn't care about money. Either way, he was right, you don't talk about wealth. While Marla didn't exactly have anyone to tell her that directly, it was common sense.
"Oh," She began, averting eye contact as to not confront the now obvious awkwardness in the air, "I guess your whole family inherited the giant hand gene, then?" Marla murmured, putting her hand up in the air and watching the extra fabric on her fingers sadly fall limp. It was somewhat shattering her ego, but maybe Scott was a secret mutant or something and it wasn't her.
"Yeah, I guess books are good to spend money on. They keep you sharp, that's what my uncle says at least. I mean, it's just better to get used to it since that's basically all you can do in Hogwarts in your free time. Hanging out with friends, too, but that gets tiring after a while for me, at least. Then again, there's no good use for books if I freeze to death." She added, relieved that Scott broke the ice a little bit and decided to talk about something less uncomfortable. And interesting. Books are one of Marla's favorite pastimes, if not the only one. Of course, she snuck out sometimes and hung out with friends, but something about reading just kept her brain quiet. And it's been challenging to do that lately. "I mean, there's a giant library with practically every book that you can imagine. There's no use in spending money on them if there's like a thousand at your fingertips, so it's kind of a waste when you think about it. But yes, gloves do keep you warm," And it was actually surprising what a little hand gear could do, since just moments ago she was on the verge of freezing over.
"Actually, what do people do when they don't read a lot? I'm guessing you read at least a little bit, but... Do people just stare at their walls all day? Especially muggle-borns. Nothing against them, I just know they're used to television and not reading books all the time. So first years, especially of that background, must find this place boring as hell."

Sad, or Just Hungry? Scientists Can't Tell
Scott could barely hear a word that his housemate was saying due to her mumbling (and, admittedly, her accent), which was most likely done in sympathy with his reaction. But as he gratefully took it all as a sign she'd allowed for him to change the subject he rejoiced in her words anyway, ignoring the way she'd dismissed his compliment only a few seconds earlier. What did it matter."Oh... I guess your whole family inherited the giant hand gene, then?"
"Well! You know what they say about big hands," He laughed in relief and made a little bow towards her, happy to hear he'd been of assistance. "-big hearts!" Some people probably say that.
Scott had greatly needed to straighten his back then, and to make sure none of his silliness could be spotted anymore from her part... It wasn't her fault, was it, that it had been an awkward question? No, it was his- because even though he'd watched members of his family handle it over and over and with a lot of grace growing up (Silas and his mother were the most proficient at this), he'd never learned how to do it himself.
He'd really need to, though, didn't he? And soon. Maybe he could write down a joke to use every time.
Marla had then also, bless her heart, mercifully steered the conversation into yet another direction. She'd gone on to talk about, with admittedly some lack of enthusiasm, how boring their school must be in the eyes of students who are used to their easy access entertainment.
Scott could somehow sense that maybe Marla was getting bored herself, and sincerely hoped he wasn't contributing to it. Could he be? After all: without him, there'd only be an empty training pitch for her to stare at, and he couldn't deprecate himself enough to imagine that that would be much more fun for her.
"I'd have to disagree with you about that, actually! I can take a walk across these grounds and consider my day completely made! But I mean... it may very well have something to do with my not ever having had a TV, like you say. If I'd had one, then maybe I'd miss it every hour of every day! And this is not to mention-"
But at the same time, he had at this stage also begun to realise that some people just weren't like him: they really did want to be left alone.
"Never mind, actually. Maybe you're right. Maybe this place can be quite dull... Dull and intrusive. That's never nice! No, not a nice thing to be. Honestly, if you ever find yourself being dull or intrusive you should just stop, right? Stop and walk away."
Scott laughed nervously again, and dropped his palms to his knees. He couldn't help but curse himself slightly, for having done this again. People weren't always keen on conversation, he needed to remember that. People weren't always keen on him, either. And that wasn't their fault. Was it his? Well, that was a question for another time.
Standing up, Scott made a show of patting his stomach once or twice.
"You know what? Your delightful company swept my mind away, and almost had me forgetting how hungry I was! Or rather, it did make me forget, but now it's too great a pain to ignore. I think I'll head back to the castle, myself. They might still be serving breakfast, or else I'll have something in the dormitory. Yes! This sounds like a plan."
Smiling Marla goodbye, Scott made a hesitant little turn on his heel before he left her in the stands.
"I, uh... I hope I didn't bother you. Have a great rest of your morning! Enjoy the sky!"
Scott leaves the thread. The thread ends.
