Lottie was not a troublemaker.

She had promised it of herself, for many many years. From her first ride on the Hogwarts Express to her last, she had sworn that she would sooner put a stake through her heart than cause trouble in the one place she couldn't bear to be expelled from. And yet, here she was, one socked foot in front of the other leading her further down the darkened corridors past curfew.

It hadn't been her intention to sneak out, at least not at first. She had tossed and turned in her bed for about an hour before quickly determining that she would not be getting any rest, and then she had slipped on a pair of fuzzy socks and a bulky jacket over her nightgown. The common room had satisfied her for only a few minutes, until the unbearable feeling of being watched washed over her and she decided her only options were to continue flopping around like a fish on land in her bed or take a walk. The latter was obviously the more pleasing, and Lottie had always been a creature of feeling over logic. So, she had left. Simple as that.

The long stone corridors were unlit in the night, only the pale moon shining through the high windows allowing any light to guide her way. She side-eyed the eerily still plates of armor that lined the halls, keeping her footsteps quiet and deliberate. The silence was where the thoughts always began, creeping into her mind like starving ants and eating away at her brain. She thought of her brothers and sisters, of her exams, of the impending winter break that would either enlighten her or just send her spiraling further. Her breath quickened slightly, and she had to stop and grab at the wall near the end of the corridor.

Tears pricked at her eyes, but she fought them off. This only worked to relocate her energy to her breath, a violent fear response that shook her to her core and sent chills down her spine. She slid down the wall and sat there on the stone floor, flopping her head into her hands and trying to regain control. All she could imagine was her mother, all the secrets Lottie had kept from her and the lies she had told. It was dreadful, the thought of her finding out. Lottie never used to lie. Her mother would deem her just like Anadil. Perhaps she would kick her out as well, and then Lottie would have nothing.

Avis crept down the halls as silently as she could, breathing in the cool night air, and running her hand along the rough stone walls. Her breaths stretched long and soft. There was nothing better than a walk during the night, when the castle was asleep and it was just her in a giant medieval castle. Before it had gotten cold, she would often slip out to the grounds until the whole fiasco with Aamon. Now, she usually just walked the halls, occasionally climbing to the owlery when she needed to see the stars.

Actually, there was one thing better than a nighttime walk - a walk with no consequences. It made being a prefect all worth it. She was actually supposed to be out here watching for those "rascals." Thankfully, she had yet to find one, had yet to give out a detention. Holding detention seemed a perfect pain, but the students of Hogwarts seemed relatively well-behaved, and those who weren't seemed to be most likely to become prefects.

That was strange, now that she thought about it.

But ah, well. Nighttime walks weren't for thinking. They were for avoiding those annoying thoughts. She pulled a caramel out of her pocket, untwisting it and popping it in her mouth, rolling it over her tongue. As she turned the next corner, she froze, biting her lip and staring at the girl sitting on the ground a few feet away, head in her hands.

What was the protocol again? Detention, right? Nonsense. The thought had barely crossed Avis' mind before she dismissed it. There were priorities in life. Empathy came before rules. Instead, she sighed, slipping up to the girl and dropping her footsteps on the ground the slightest bit heavier to announce her presence. She pressed her back to the wall and sank to the ground next to the girl. After a moment of thought, she unhooked her prefect badge and dropped it into her pocket.

Avis said nothing, simply hooking her arms around her knees. Silence meant nothing to her. There was no such thing as an awkward silence. It simply allowed for further thinking between both parties. Besides, she still had caramel in her mouth, and everyone knew not to talk with food in their mouth. And caramel seemed especially awful, with how sticky it was. Imagine trying to talk, and spider web strands of caramel stretching between your jaw. Nasty.

Whatever the reason, Avis said nothing, giving the girl the chance to start the conversation. If minutes passed in silence, then maybe she would think about saying something.

You are welcome to claim she saw Avis take off her badge if you would like.

Lottie felt slightly embarrassed, despite being all by her lonesome. Perhaps it was because she never felt alone here. Just around the corner there could be a poltergeist, or a talking portrait, or a wizard disguised as a cat. Anything really. Or perhaps even just another wizard. That was also very, very plausible. It was at the exact moment that this thought passed through her mind that she heard a pair of shoes softly scuffing the ground below, hesitating, then going silent. Lottie knew then that she was not alone.

She kept her head in her hands, much too afraid to face whoever had caught her having a pity party in the dark of midnight, but they didn't seem to mind the wait. She wasn't exactly sure how long it took, but eventually the quiver in her shoulders and the ache in her chest began to fade, leaving only a bitter sense of disconnectedness, like the darkness of her palms was an empty expanse of universe and she was wandering aimlessly in search of home. Wherever that was.

She really did hate being alone. Why did she always forget that?

Eventually, she allowed herself to sit up. Her eyes remained trained to the floor for a while, the silence giving her a few moments to organize her thoughts and attempt to reanimate her weak bones. Of course now she was tired, after she had already ventured from her room and wandered until she was lost in the winding halls of Hogwarts. She exhaled slowly, if a bit shakily, and finally looked up at the other.

It was a girl, not much younger than Lottie, with dark hair. A single streak of blue ran down the front, and it struck Lottie as stylish in a peculiar, unorthodox manner. She thought that perhaps the face was familiar, but she couldn't pinpoint where on earth she recalled her from. It seemed important, but her mind was still a bit swimmy from its little trip down panic lane. She stared until it no longer seemed appropriate, then looked back at the floor and brushed a hand through her hair.

"You're sneaking about as well, I presume?" Her voice was strangely thin, not with the typical softness it usually carried. She cleared her throat. "It's... my first time. I don't usually."

As her caramel faded into nothing, Avis frowned a moment, turning her eyes to the rough cobbled ceiling. How had Hogwarts been built? It seemed dumb to use manual labour, when magic could do just the same, but she had learned enough in transfiguration that if someone had just poofed the castle into existence, certainly they would have learned about that, considering the wizard would have to be one of the most powerful ever.

The biggest question was where they got all the stone slabs from. Had they just magiced them? Were they from a quarry? WAIT. Was the Great Lake a giant quarry? Woah. Well, either way, she supposed Wingardium had a big part. Or wait, giants. Maybe the giants-

The girl sitting next to her looked up, distracting Avis from her thoughts. Thankfully, too, before she had fallen too far down that rabbit hole. She waited for the girl to stop staring, and after a moment, she started questioning if she had some spinach stuck in her teeth.

The girls were much too close together for Avis to also make eye contact, so she busied herself pulling a caramel out of her bag, offering one to the girl with a raised eyebrow. Or, two, rather. Avis still couldn't figure out how people managed to raise only one eyebrow.

"You're sneaking about as well, I presume?" Avis offered nothing but a non-commital shrug. She wasn't about to advertise her prefectness, but she wasn't going to lie about it either. That was sure to explode in her face. "I used to sneak out constantly. I'm a huge fan of the stars." Perfect. A fully diplomatic answer.

"It's... my first time. I don't usually." Avis exaggerated a sarcastic, knowing nod. "Of course, of course. Usually you prefer to cry in a public common room. I'd bet you announce it too, so everyone can take bets on the reason."

She didn't ask the reason. She didn't care, or so she kept telling herself. Her brain and her heart are in a consistent tug of war over whether to care. The answer, to her utter dismay, kept being yes. If only she were like Gideon, and could stab people in the back every four seconds without a care in the world. Darn that morality.

Lottie didn't quite know what to make of the girl. She swore that she had seen her somewhere before, but she couldn't for the life of her conjure up her name. Perhaps she had read it in the prior year's yearbook? Or in the headliner? Her inability to identify the girl only worked to stress her out more, so she stopped trying.

Lottie quite liked the stars as well, though it made more sense for her to be so willing to sneak out for them on account of her dormitory being in the dungeons. Though, of course, the other girl could also be a Slytherin. It wasn't as if Lottie knew every single Slytherin that passed through the common room, especially not the ones younger than she. She decided not to press on it. The stars were quite nice tonight, anyways, at least the ones she had been able to see from the narrow lens of decorative windows.

"Used to?" She narrowed her eyes at the floor. Some habits never die, Lottie supposed, though she wasn't sure why this stumped her so. She sighed softly, resting her head in her hands. Her mind just couldn't seem to cease its spinning.

At the girl's next comment, however, Lottie's head shot up. She shook her head, chewing her cheek. "I wasn't crying. I was just... sitting here." Her cheeks flushed a bit at that, and she brought her knees back up to her chest. "You didn't have to come over here if you were just going to be rude."

Admittedly, though, Lottie didn't mind it. Her thoughts had calmed just a bit, focused more on the interaction before her. It reminded her of when her sister would pull her out of her room and take her out to the grounds, how quickly her mind eased when her brain was refocused on something more simple. Even if it was defending her quickly-crumbling dignity.

"Used to?" Avis didn't answer. She didn't have an answer to the question. At least, not one that would keep up her whole secret normal-student alias she was going for.

The girl just didn't grab the caramel, and didn't mention in either. Either she was one of those health nuts who thought they were so much better than everyone else, or she was so deep in her own misery that not even thee oh-so-holy caramel could pull her out of those trenches. Shrugging, she untwisted it, popping it in her own mouth, a poor idea in hindsight. Now she couldn't talk until it was gone. She held up one finger as she worked it through her mouth, attempting to dissolve it as quickly as possible.

"I wasn't crying. I was just... sitting here." Avis snickered as the she swallowed the caramel, probably larger than she should have, coughing as it made its way down her throat. "Right. Sure. That's what you were doing." On all her patrols she found students sitting on the hard stone floor, head in hands, because they felt like it. So much more comfortable than a bed. She gave a logical, knowing nod to the girl, as if she completely agreed.

Granted, when Avis cried, she did it silently from the comfort of her own bed, she didn't go looking for the most uncomfortable place to do it. But to each her own, she supposed. Maybe the girl was just a really loud crier, and didn't want her roomates to hear.

"You didn't have to come over here if you were just going to be rude." Avis rolled her eyes. "Rude" The words adults used when they just didn't like what you said, when you hurt their feelings. They always wanted honesty, but not that much honesty. "Oh I'm sorry. I thought you weren't crying? Your life is perfect, after all." Avis couldn't be accused of having a lack of self control, her words had been spun around the "kindness meter" a hundred times before they had come out of her mouth. It wasn't her fault if everyone else in life was sensitive.

"I'm Avis, by the way." She would have held out her hand to shake, but the girl had just been crying (allegedly) after all, and without any tissues Avis could only image how she wiped her tears and snot away. People always seemed to have runny noses when they cried.

Through the brief breaks of silence between snappy remarks, Lottie couldn't help but travel into quiet wondering. A few things became clear to her, one being that the girl had been offering a caramel just a moment ago and Lottie had been completely oblivious to the attempt. She didn't like caramel much, anyways. Another was that she probably sounded like a pretentious wimp with her childish denial and fairly obvious defensiveness. She couldn't shake it now, though.

"It was." Lottie emphasized, peering over at the girl with a pathetic look on her face. She leaned back down with a huff, cupping her face in her hands and staring at the stones below. Bits of dust and grime had gotten caught in the cracks, and for some reason that made her extremely upset.

The girl's words were annoying, but they weren't cutting. Lottie knew what it sounded like when someone truly meant their words, and the girl's tone was thinly veiled with a lighthearted air. Lottie believed in actions over words, and her action of sitting by Lottie and offering her candy and inviting herself so easily into her space was pretty telling. That didn't make the jabs any less annoying, and Lottie couldn't help but glance up at the girl with narrowed eyes at that last comment.

Avis. Where had she heard that name before? She swore she had seen it somewhere, or multiple somewheres. For some reason it seemed important, though she couldn't for the life of her identify why.

With a sigh, she gave up on her desperate searching and sat up, glancing over at Avis. "Charlotte. Or, Lottie, I suppose." She much preferred the nickname, although she couldn't stop introducing herself in full. It was a habit from too many parties and too many rich wizards with sweaty palms and gummy smiles.

"It was." At that point, Avis just let the matter go. She knew she was right, after all, and she didn't really need Charlotte admitting it. Besides, if she pushed it any further she was pretty sure the girl might explode on the spot. That would be nasty and a pain, and well, if the situation escalated, she might have to actually be a prefect.

Plus, the look on her face was just so absolutely pathetic that Avis felt like right now, she was basically just talking to a host of coping mechanisms rather than the actual person.

As Charlotte looked up with narrowed eyes, Avis leaned back, raised her eyebrows, and folded her arms across her in a "prove me wrong" stance, stretching her legs out as if she were planning on staying a while. It was as close as she was going to get to asking what was the matter, especially considering Charlotte hadn't affirmed or denied her statement.

Considerable effort was placed into not complaining about how uncomfortable sitting there was. It would ruin the effect. But the wall wasn't even straight, it was digging into her back in all the wrong places and Avis had a feeling she was going to need to see a chiropractor when she got home next.

"Charlotte. Or, Lottie, I suppose." Avis sucked in a quick breath, resisting the temptation to respond with a "hello "Charlotte-Or-Lottie." She was certainly her father's child. Instead, she offered her a quick nod of acknowledgement while trying to subtely shift so that a certain pokey part of the wall was no longer directly in her spine.

Pulling out her wand, Avis began to twirl it in her fingers. She was horrid at this, and it clattered to the floor every few seconds, to which Avis would simply shrug and pick it up again, but this conversation was dragging on. It was difficult to extract pieces when someone had built an entire fortress to keep you out, and if Avis had learned anything in Stratego, it was that distraction was the best offense. Her horrid baton twirling could only get better with practice, and she could only dissect this conversation with a quick change in tension.

Time passed like sand through a sieve as silence drew heavy between the two, though not the kind of silence Lottie had come to dislike. It was not discomfort, not the quiet that brought with it uncertainty and thoughts that exploded like stars. It was a nice kind of quiet, a kind that felt full and present, not distant. Lottie was endlessly aware of the other girl's presence beside her, close enough that their warmth lingered in the air and blocked out some of the midnight chill.

Lottie brought her palms up to cup her cheeks, fingers ghosting over soft, cold skin. It was late, and she should be sleeping, and yet here she was. She'd surely regret this in the morning, when she woke up at the crack of dawn for breakfast and proceed to sulk through her morning classes like a freshly-risen zombie. Still, she couldn't find it in herself to care. It was a burden of the future.

A sharp wooden clattering quickly drew her from her thoughts, and she glanced over through her bangs to find that Avis was doing a pretty pathetic job of twirling her wand. Lottie watched with blank amusement for a bit, the repeated motion of Avis's clumsy fingers managing a few spins before promptly twisting at awkward angles and sending the wand back to the stone below. It took only a few more attempts for Lottie to finally grow annoyed.

Swiftly, she pulled her wand from her big jacket and mumbled a quick, "Wingardium Leviosa." Just as Avis's wand was about to hit the ground once more, it stopped abruptly in mid-air and floated there. Lottie watched it with mild curiosity. Her spellcasting wasn't nearly rubbish, but she rarely tested it outside of class. She glanced up from the wand to Avis's face, tilting her head a bit.

"Have we met before? It's the strangest thing, but I feel as if I've seen you somewhere."

Avis was all for silencel however, she was unsure if this specific silence ever had plans on ending. She sure wasn't going to end it. She could keep twirling this baton until she became a master. World champion baton twirler, right here. Charlotte really should have asked her for her autograph.

Well, if she became a master, at that point she would speak. But until that point, on went the cycle of swish swish clatter, and Avis had to bite back a growing smile at the irritated look on Charlotte's face. Eventually, the third year had finally had enough, and Avis' wand stopped in midair. Certainly a creative strategy, although she had to wonder why she hadn't just...taken it.

Magic seemed to incite a flair for the dramatic, she supposed. Why steal something when you could simply levitate it? No matter. Avis plucked her wand out of thin air- it had served its purpose, and stuck it into her pocket. Out of her satchel she grabbed yet another three caramels and began to juggle them - horribly, as all three of them tumbled to the ground every few moments.

If something moved, use duck tape. If it didn't, use WD-40, and for all other problems - caramel.

"Have we met before? It's the strangest thing, but I feel as if I've seen you somewhere." Avis shrugged. "We go to the same school. Are we going to get on with this heart to heart or am I going to just be sitting here for the rest of the night?" She pulled her air all to one side so that she could lean her head against the wall without any little stray pieces scratching at the back of her neck. If she closed her eyes, she could almost pretend she was lying in her bed. However, closing her eyes turned out to be a poor idea, as her juggling went from bad to worse.
