Stuck in Burning Dreams
Takes place the day after the events of Something Dire in the Dark
(Slytherin common room main story event)
TW: animal death
After the chaos of the night before, Flash had taken a nap in the hospital wing, and then attended his classes as usual, skipping breakfast. It was a difficult day to maintain attention, but he felt the need for knowledge now more than ever. It was his lack of knowledge, he thought, that made him so useless to fight the ethereal spiders that had invaded his common room. He didn’t even know if he could sleep in the dorms anymore, but he also couldn’t get appropriate rest in the hardback wooden chair in the hospital wing either. Maybe just one more night, to be sure.
In the evening when he returned to Opeila’s bedside, she was finally awake. A relief. The nurse and his attendants must have found something that counteracted the poison, though the dreaded thought of untimely death had crossed Flash’s mind more than once. The way the students had reacted to the bites was the most vivid expression of pain and horror he had ever seen. It must have been remarkably harrowing, as it hurt just to watch.
Not that Flash hadn’t seen death before. Most of the time that Flash was on break from school, he would be enlisted to help in whatever stable his father was currently working in. It was only after Flash had begged him many times, for staying at home only meant being pestered to help with his baby brother, and horses were at least better than babies. He would only do menial tasks that anyone could do, but he got to talk to the stablehands and keep himself busy.
One day, one of the workers was lunging a horse for exercise, following the procedure as usual. Flash was right there at the edge of the gate, learning the ropes, as it were. In mere moments, although nothing seemed to be amiss at all, one of the cracks of the whip sent the horse leaping strangely, kicking its own leg and breaking it. That was what they learned afterwards at least, in the moment the horse simply bucked and collapsed all at once, writhing on the ground making hysterical noises. Its wailing drew the attention of everyone nearby. Several people quickly rushed in to assess the situation, to do anything they could, but nothing could be done.
Flash sat on the fence and watched it unfold quietly. Bucking, screaming, panicking, and then, a revolver shot to the head. After that, the helpless whinnying stopped and the strong, majestic steed was transformed into nothing but a motionless corpse. The worker was sacked, even though Flash attested that he did nothing wrong. A child’s word wasn’t enough. The horse had been worth more than the worker’s full year salary.
He sat down in the chair beside Opeila’s bed, his usual smile returned to his features.
”Opeila, it’s good to see you awake. How are you feeling?”

Stuck in Burning Dreams
Opeila hadn't said a word since the attack of the spiders. She just couldn't. Never in her life had the eleven year old experienced a thing like that and might she seem grown up sometimes, she was still only a child. A child that had to suffer excruciating pain the other night.
After the nurse made the worst pain stop, Opeila had just been laying there for hours, staring at the wall on the other side fo the room, her hands clenched to tights fists, her eyes widened with horror. She had been terrified like she had never been before. The Slytherin needed hours to convince herself to even move a limb, a huge part of hair feared for the pain to come back if she did.
After a while, she finally started to move a little and reacting to peoples words, though she had said nothing. Opeila was just miserable. Even paler than she normally was, she layed on her hospital bed, when Flash entered. She was glad that he came to see her. May the night be some sort of painful blur, she did remember him staying at her side, although he was risking suffering the same fate as she did. She didn't know how she could make it up to him for that.
And he was one of the few who didn't frown while looking at her, telling her to rest. It was refreshing to see a smile here, never had she noticed, how depressing the hospital wing was.
He asked her how she was feeling. Opeila didn't answer. She sent him a little smile and shrugged. Somehow she was scared to hear her own voice, she couldn't even say, why she felt so.
Her legs were still hurting a little.
She didn't dare to check if they were still black.

Opeila didn’t answer Flash’s question directly, instead shrugging and smiling. He could infer enough from that, she was feeling terribly, but at least it was better than what it had been before. At least she seemed glad to see him. He would have left if she wanted to be alone, but the truth was he really didn’t want to be alone for now. He still thought spiders might start coming after him at any moment, and the dread only grew as the sun was about to set. He would get over his paranoia eventually, so long as nothing else happened, but it had to have been worse for her.
She had gotten bit more than once, and fought back even though she had been petrified in fear. He had mostly had a casually friendly relationship with Opeila up to that point, not delving too much into the secrets buried thinly underneath her tough but fair personality. He did it out of respect for her, who accepted his friendship openly and easily.
Now, with her prone in the bed looking frail and sickly, he found himself wanting to know her better. Even though she seemed reticent to speak, he figured he could do the heavy lifting, as long as she was willing to listen.
”It’s remarkable how well you’ve held up, given the circumstances. To be quite honest, I barely held it together myself. Now that I see you’re recovering, I can finally feel some peace.” Flash put his hand on the bed. Not touching her, but trying to feel connected. ”It must have been very difficult. I’m proud of you, for doing what you could.”

She was feeling terribly. The pain was gone, but still fresh and present in her memory, making her wrap her arms around her torso, if she thought about it too much.
It was that sort of memory, that would never disappear in her whole life, if it wasn't replaced by a worse one. Fade, yes. But not disappear.
Opeila knew that she was a selfish person. At night, in the middle of all those horrors, trapped inside her tormented body, there hadn't been a lot of room to worry about anyone but herself. She had been completely out of control over her own thoughts.
And when she looked at her friends face now, she realized, that she hadn't been the only one who suffered in there. Opeila remembered the state of shock she had been in before she was attacked, only because she had looked at the students that were falling.
Flash had been holding her through the whole time, risking his own safety and even encouraged her to fight the spiders.
She had not been alone. That was what she had been thinking, right? She had not been alone for a second, physically and mentally.
And Flash must have been scared.
But even now, he told her how well she had held up and that seeing her recover brought him peace.
What did she even do to deserve a friend like that?
He put his hand on her bed and said that he was proud of her, making her smile again.
The hand on her bed irritated her for a second- she didn't know what he expected her to do. In the end she just reached out and touched it with her right hand in an appreciating move.
She cleared her throat.
"T-Thanks..." Her voice sonded very sore, what was not surprising after her hours of crying and screaming.

Opeila touched his hand, something he wasn’t entirely expecting, though he should have known that his gesture would provoke such a response. Her fingertips were slight and cold, he almost wanted to grab both her hands to share his warmth, but that was far too forward. He settled on wrapping his fingers around hers. He wasn’t as used to physical contact as he could be. Most physical contact with anyone but his family had been strictly discouraged-- it was rarely proper to touch someone else in any way, besides a handshake. Since she completed the distance between them though, he felt himself somehow closer to her than ever.
It was funny, when thinking of how close they had been during the attack. That hadn’t been a warm embrace, however. It had been an act of desperation. Opeila had been bitten on her legs and nearly collapsed on the floor from the pain it put her through. Everytime Flash thought about it-- he had been looking right at her when it happened-- he flinched with discomfort. He wondered what her condition really was. He wished he could find an orderly to interrogate so he could know the full effect the attacks would end up having. If they left any kind of permanent damage, he might never forgive himself for how little he had been able to do.
Even with that though, there had been psychological damage as well. He also hoped that wouldn’t be permanent either. With that, at least, he could try to help heal her.
”If you need anything you would tell me, right? Did you need some water?” Flash looked around the room quickly, there had to be potable water somewhere in the hospital wing. With nothing directly in front of them, he turned back to her for the time being. ”And, well, when I say anything I don’t just mean errands. You can talk to me too. Or not talk. Whatever you need.”
Flash looked at Opeila directly, his face showing the determination to follow through with his offer. He couldn’t know how the attack had affected her, but he wanted to try to find out. Of course, there were other students who had lasting damage from the attack as well, but Opeila wasn’t just anyone. She was his friend.

Stuck in Burning Dreams
Opeila didn't know what exactly she had expected, when she touched his hand. Maybe a weird look, him pulling his hand back or something. But not him wrapping his warm fingers around hers. It felt good in a weird way. And dangerous. She liked and valued Flash, but now she realized what had happened. It was like a wall fell down, a wall, that she had built up without knowing after Jack left. It had protected her from everything that came after except maybe Ruka who got a glimpse through a crack maybe.
But Flash now had protected her. He had seen her state and still held her, knowing that he could suffer the same pain. He hadn't let go.
She should pull her hand now. She should eliminate this danger before it could develop further, but instead she found herself holding on to his hand. Opeila did want to trust Flash. And that fact now scared the hell out of her. Everyone she trusted eventually backed off. And she didn't want to lose any more people.
That's why she needed a moment to think about an answer to Flash's question if she'd tell him if she needed anything. Even someone to talk to. Opeila wanted to. She wanted to so badly, but what would it cost her?
The Slytherin looked at their hands when she answered. She just couldn't look him in the face, suddenly she felt like she was going to cry.
Opeila cleared her throat again. "I want to say more than I feel comfortable to say, actually.", she said.
"But everyone I talked to, eventually just left me. People I trust with things tend to leave."
He voice was barely more than a sore wisper in the end.
"Thank you for not leaving. Not yet anyways."

Stuck in Burning Dreams
Flash listened intently, wondering what kind of action he could take that would improve the situation. He was focussed on it, it was his responsibility to make things better. She spoke softly still, having to find her voice.
When she spoke, Flash’s hand gripped tighter, before he remembered her frail state and quickly eased up again. She had mentioned things to him before in passing-- things he ignored, given they were often in situations that were meant to be light-hearted and genial. He had never pried into Opeila’s life.
But it seemed she stumbled over her words for a reason, she was afraid of sharing herself. Afraid that once she opened up, people would just leave. Flash wished he could explain just how much he could relate, but… that was too much.
It was a strange feeling, like conflict. He wanted Opeila to feel like she had nothing to fear, but it almost felt like he would have to admit it to himself first. It wasn’t like he felt that way with everyone, it was just that Opeila had always been so kind to him, smiling and making jokes, asking after him when he looked sad. At least he knew she had nothing to fear from him, regardless of how it would be with other people.
”Anyone who would leave your side when you needed them is a waste of time anyway.” Flash countered her concerns with his own point of view. ”Just keep finding more and more people who stay, and you won’t have to feel uncomfortable. I’ll start the trend, shall I?”
It was a minor thing, a small promise of a nicer future where she didn’t have to be as afraid as she was now. He could handle being by her side when she needed him, how hard could that be anyway.
”I’ll stay the night tonight, alright? I was planning to anyway. Not to mention I went and collected your homework.”
Flash briefly looked over to his side bag, it was stuffed. ”I won’t say I’ll do your homework for you, but let’s just say the secret word is ‘daffodil’, and we’ll just keep it between us.” Flash smiled a cheeky grin, hoping she would either allow him to help or just take it as a joke.

Stuck in Burning Dreams
Opeila didn't even really feel Flash gripping tighter but automatically her slightly shaking hand did as well.
She was scared. So scared. Her breakdown in the bathroom after Jack cutting ties was too present still, for a second she almost felt the cuts on her hands after she had broken one of the mirrors.
Anyone leaving her side when they were needed, was a waste of time, was what Flash said. She should keep looking for people.
Opeila could only nod. She should. But she didn't want to anymore. Who hadn't let her down after she trusted them with her feelings? She couldn't think of a person except her grandmother. And Hardin, the family owl.
"I'm scared.", she wispered, biting her lip. "I am so scared, Flash. The last person I trusted, here in Hogwarts, afterwards took a forgetfulness potion. Because of me. To forget me." She knew that her eyes were at least shimmering, a sign of tears to come.
"I'm not exactly the most loveable person. Even you know only really the loyal, kind side, that organizes small groups for errands and that stuff. You don't know the person behind all that. I'm broken." She felt broken. People had kicked her again and again and she was just done with all this. She had wanted to just scream at everyone, for a long time.
She was surprised when Flash said that he would stay the night. Surprised and thankful and guilty. The beds were all full with the victims of the spider attack, there was not exactly space for him to sleep. If she moved over, there should be enough space, right? She couldn't just let Flash sleep on that probably uncomfortable chair...
"You collected my homework? Thank you! Oh man, I must have missed a lot..."
Opeila smiled a little, listening to Flash's next words.
She was grateful that he thought of her so much...
"Can- Can I hug you?", she asked.

Stuck in Burning Dreams
After what he had said, it was like he had given Opeila permission to open the flood gates, and she had clearly needed it. One thing after another, explaining some horrible situation with a forgetfulness potion, as well as implying that she was broken beyond the facade. Flash hardly knew where to begin. It was like an overview of many smaller things whose intricacy hid behind the wider strokes of her words. Saying you were broken was something that was easy to understand on the surface level-- it was the feeling that something was wrong with you, like the certainty you had was shattered by something.
His books didn’t go over this, really. Most of what he had learned was a matter of conversational flow, and knowing how to encourage someone to share information, or think of him kindly. When it came to thinking one was broken, he felt just as lost at sea as anyone else. He didn’t know how to make that feeling go away, or he would have done it by now. He wanted to say that the sweet and kind Opeila wouldn’t be changed by what was inside, but he didn’t feel like he could talk. From his point of view, presentation was everything. It didn’t matter what was inside.
But when Opeila said it, he started to feel the pit of his stomach drop out. He really didn’t want to think about it. He had resolved to himself that as long as everything looked like it was under control, that was all that mattered. He was terrified during the spider attack, but because he got his act together, everyone, including the head of house, would remember him as being brave. His apparent calmness had eased Opeila as well, an undeniably positive effect.
But here Opeila was, needing to talk about it, needing someone to open up to. It was a part of himself he was sure he would never share, it felt too private. It was a bit of a hypocritical thing for him to think. He couldn’t explain why this situation was so different than so many others, where people confided personal information to him freely. He would have to think about it another time, when his running thoughts could have time to breathe.
Luckily he didn’t have to decide how to react, because Opeila finally asked for something from him. A hug. That was something he could manage easily. Flash retrieved his smile from where it had been hidden during his introspection, standing up.
”Of course.”
He reached over and hugged her tightly. She tried to sit up, but struggled. So Flash supported her weight in his arms again. This time, however, there was nothing to protect her from. The people who left her behind, the people who made her think she was broken, they were nowhere to be seen. It was just scared children needing comfort. He thought, briefly, If you're broken, then I'll hold all the pieces together for you.

Stuck in Burning Dreams
Oh, if he knew. Opeila had not pushed a door open at all. She had only let a few drops out of a tiny crack, since she was still scared to release this flood of fear and hatred. The Slytherin was sure that it would overwhelm her housemate and she didn't want that. Not now. Not today.
But the main messasge of what she had said, was true. She was a broken person. Or at least close to broken. She felt like she was hanging on the edge of a cliff holding on to something, that could fall just as it could stay and pull her up maybe. And it was nothing that Flash could help her with, right? No one could, not even the stupid St Mungo's healers could.
"Thank you..."
It was when Flash hugged her, that she realised how much she had needed this. She had been holding herself together, except of a few breakdowns at night, under her blanket, alone and unheared.
But now that he hugged her a shiver seemed to run through the girls body and she wrapped her arms around her friend.
She couldn't hold her tears back anymore. Her body shook again and she buried her face in Flash's shoulder. Hiding. From the world, Flash or herself? She wasn't quite sure.
She just hoped that he wouldn't be angry about the tears on his shirt.
