2025/26, Stage 1 Hufflepuff vs Gryffindor: Match 8

Vera almost collapsed from the overwhelming emotions that came over her. To start, her spell just barely nicked the Gryffindor girl she'd been aiming at. She knew her spells weren't quite strong enough as a new duellist, but considering the state Hufflepuff was in, Vera was stressed. Then, the Gryffindor boy finally dropped. She wanted to feel a little sympathy for him, considering he had burned to unconsciousness, but she could only feel relief at having one less opponent to deal with.

The real kicker was that the same girl Vera had been aiming for also dropped to the ground. As Aislin called for everyone to stop, she sinply stood there, eyes wide and completely shocked. The Gryffindor girl Vera barely hit was also out of the game. That Fire-Making Spell that backfired on the Gryffindor was meant to knock Vera out. Vera almost dropped to the floor, unsure of which emotion to process first. It was three against one, and it was only this way out of pure luck.

Vera blinked a few times, then tightened her grip on her wand. Not yet. It wasn't over just yet.

It was impossible to imagine that the duel had been terrifying and hopelessly difficult only a handful of rounds ago. Amelia felt excitement and a calmness as she once again raised her wand. At Cassian. Another wisp of fire to ensure the safety of the team. It was seeing him grasp for hope by extinguishing her previous spell that made her already done action seem somewhat mean. Especially when it was her spell that caused his action in this duel to come to a close. She had done something! She had helped her team!

Aislin called for the duelists to stop, to remove Cassian… and Euronia from the duel. This action caused a beam of hope to flood through the small girl. They could win. They were making a comeback. Hope. A truly lovely thing.

Day 2 - Afternoon slot
Without Eonaria and Cassian, the stage felt empty and unbalanced. And the teammate they'd left behind maybe felt similarly, looking lost in all the space on their side of the stage. They couldn't seem to make up their mind between fighting until the end or quitting while they were still on their feet.

At the same time, Amelia had positioned herself protectively in front of her teammates, determined not to let them fall. Aislin hadn't seen a lot of duelling, so she didn't know how common of a move that was, but she appreciated it. Common or not, she was sure it took a lot of care to decide to take a jinx for someone, though she wouldn't have to just yet. Behind her protection, her teammates fired off their spells. The Flipendo missed, but Verity landed a Rictusempra that really seemed to dig its invisible fingers in, which was possibly worse than just raw force. Hufflepuff remained a solid unit, and Aislin kept glancing at the remnants of Gryffindor, curious what they would do.

Well, darn. Pity it missed, considering my target wasn't fully in the game. They looked like they had spaced out. My ally had made a hit at the very least, making the laugh. I raised my wand. As long as I didn't deal the finishing blow to myself, then everything would be okay.

The duel hadn't gone so well in the beginning, but the turnaround by the middle of the match was not something Vera expected to happen at all. When your opening is weak, it's generally hard to recover from a bad position unless the opponent messed up their own strategy. But that also meant you had to be smart enough to see the gap.

This turnaround, Vera believed, was more luck than an opponent opening up their weak spots. But she supposed, in this moment, it was a weak spot that allowed them to keep putting pressure on the Gryffindor team. As long as nothing went wrong, then they could still make it to the end in one piece. A bit battered, but in one piece.

It had never seemed possible that they might win at the start, so the turn of events left Amelia with excitement

There was only one on the opposing team left. Only one person to be at ting the Hufflepuffs left. One to three. It took only a moment for Amelia to decide what to do. She didn't raise her wand, instead stepping in front of her fellow teammate. A defensive option. Something to save her team from attack.

As it so happened, her opponent didnt raise her wand. Neither did she defend. In fact it seemed as if she hadn’t done anything at all. Perhaps she had a plan? The pointlessness of young Amelia’s action caused a throng of disappointment to race through her. “No, don't get distracted. Keep hold of that victory.” Amelia assured herself, in an inaudible whisper.

Day 2 - Afternoon slot
Hufflepuff wasn't backing down, but the remaining Gryffindor wasn't squaring up to meet them. They weren't signalling for Aislin to call it, either -- did they know they could? Staying up there only looked like it would be miserable, and she could respect sticking it out another few minutes, but not like this. Wait, couldn't Aislin call the forfeit for them? She glanced down at her scribbled note sheet, quickly searching for the relevant bullet point. And yes, she could, in certain situations. Situations like this, where Hufflepuff looked ready to deliver brutal three-spell combinations and their last opponent looked like they'd forgotten what exactly they came up here to do.

Aislin waited as long as she could, just to see if they would change their mind, but called it before the Hufflepuffs could incant their spells. "Right, stop!" She hopped up onto the platform, almost missing the jump. It took a second for her to remember to stand up straight and project her voice. "That's the end." Well, not of the time, she should probably clarify. "Gryffindor forfeits. So, Hufflepuff wins!" She turned to the Hufflepuffs, all three of them still standing, dark eyes gleaming and hands clasped behind her back, rocking up on her toes. Not that she'd seen enough duels to say, but the way they'd clawed themselves back from an early struggle was admirable. "Fair play, you should be happy with yourselves. Just don't forget to check up with the healers, yeah?"
A WIN FOR HUFFLEPUFF!
