The Bird's Song
– This is part II. Part I: a trespassing minstrel –
With her quickly-made braid banging on her back as she walked down the stairs, Amelia followed Karina, making sure to stay close. As they reached the common room, she noticed just how long must have passed since they'd woken up— whatever had disturbed their sleep was quite early, but now the common room was all abuzz. There couldn't be many reasons for everyone to be up so early on a Saturday morning, and certainly not this loud. Unless there was some event going on, like a Hogsmeade trip for the elderly of the house, of course.
Shrugging internally, Amelia skipped forward, caught up with Karina, and sadly went past the Great Hall. There should be time for breakfast later, hopefully; this shouldn't take long. They gotta take care of that creature first, she thought defiantly as they stepped outside. The wind rushed past them, making the trees rustle in its wake.
There! Their bedroom window, covered by the shadow of a nearby tree. With a sigh of relief, the tired first year realized anything could climb that tree and scare them. It could easily just be a pranking student; those certainly weren't rare at Hogwarts. Although, that would also mean anything that wasn't human could climb there...
With a sudden shiver running down her spine, Amelia repositioned herself behind Karina, hugging herself tight. Her throat felt blocked, the fear controlling her voice as well. It was the real thing now, after all. Right there and then. Taking a deep breath, Amelia asked, looking to Karina for guidance, "So, have you got a plan in mind?"

Karina turned to see that Amelia had caught up with her. Amelia hadn't tried to put too much work into her hair as she came hurrying through the entire castle with Karina to make it to this spot. Wouldn't it have been better if they'd climbed out of the window? She'd stood observing the tree for quite some time now and wondered what really could be up there. Amelia and Kari were probably thinking the same thing; whatever it was up there it cold either be human or animal.
"Oh hey Amelia. Quick question, would I get in trouble for using magic? You know, a little 'accio whatever's in that tree'?"
They could try climbing up the tree, but what if they fall? Karina surly didn't want to injure herself on the day of the Quidditch match, which of course she wanted to see! She couldn't wait until she'd be one of the players......
"Right!", said Karina as her thoughts went back to what was happening and totally not Quidditch...."I mean I can try to climb that tree if you'd like, but you'll have to keep watch from bellow. And keep your wand out in case the thing attacks me. I also wouldn't like to be caught by a professor climbing school property, so we'd better hurry. Now, help me up please."

It was a fairly nice morning, Amelia remarked to herself, looking around. A bit chilly, but nice overall; the air had a nice quality, the one only cold air has. And for some reason, there was a constant stream of students spilling out of the castle, heading to the Quid— was there a game today?! A quidditch game?! Which teams were even playing?! How could she have forgotten?
Judging by the red and green, it was a Slytherin game, against Gryffindor. Oh, how could she forget about that?! There might not even be enough time for breakfast... With a huff, she turned her attention away from the students and back to her friend. Amelia blinked back at her for a second, considering.
"I... have no idea, actually. I mean, we're not allowed to in the corridors, right?" but the grounds aren't the same as the corridors; perhaps... "I could cover for you, in case a prefect comes our way. I could tryna hide you?" Amelia suggested, rubbing her hands together.
Wait, climbing was an option? "Oh hang on!" Amelia stopped her before she had time to think, not really considering the fact that climbing the tree would also bring her closer to the creature. "I love climbing trees, want me to do it instead? Besides, it'd be better if you covered for me, I'm not as good at magic as you," Amelia suggested, a smile spreading across her face.
Without wasting much time, Amelia sized up the tree. The branches seemed thick and strong enough, and they were placed nicely and rather evenly. Yeah, this should be fun!

Walking back and forth thinking. Karina already had considered seeing a dangerous object in the tree that might've escaped from the Forbidden Forest, but what if it had been something so little and so cute? Nothing really dangerous was supposed to lure them out of their common room, right?
"Huh—Oh! Sorry I must've zoned out again. Yeah, I think you could climb the tree. Just please be careful. I'm pretty strong.....You know, in case you fall I can catch you."
Karina rolled up her sleeve and showed her skinny arm with the smallest bit of muscle. Nervously giggling, she agreed that Amelia could climb the tree.
"Hold on though. I'm gonna look around to make sure that no prefect is around."
Karina looked around. The nearest one was by the lake, surely the prefect wouldn't notice them from here. No other students were around. They were all cramming into the Quidditch stadium for a good seat. This prefect must have been studying for a test, or was just ordered to stay back to watch over other students, or maybe this prefect just wasn't interested in Quidditch, whatever the deal was, the prefect was pretty focused on something Karina couldn't see.
"Should be all clear. Hurry though, I wanna get to the game on time. Haha."

Looking back at Karina, Amelia smiled at her response, chuckling at the muscle mention. "I'll be careful, don'worry," Amelia said confidently, then mumbled to herself excitedly, "Alright," then scanned the tree again, trying to plan her route. A slight jump should do it. Her jacket, however... It'd only limit her. Without much thought, Amelia threw it to the ground.
She shifted her weight from side to side, waiting for Karina to announce the coast is clear. Aha! All clear! "I'll do my best," Amelia said with a grin, then backed away, so she could gain momentum, and jumped. The leaves subdued the noise from outside, making it feel like she was in a bubble, on her own.
She stopped, took a breath, and started searching. A shadow that didn't belong, or a fallen feather... No, nothing so far. Well, it wasn't surprising. Their window was a bit higher... Stretching her legs, Amelia managed to reach the taller branches, but now fear was seeping again into her mind. The school surely had some protections, creatures from the dark forest couldn't enter the school grounds, right?...
Then, it caught her eye— a bunch of tiny branches, arranged neatly together... "Karina, you there?" Amelia called out, her voice trembling a bit, her heart beating even faster. It seemed like a regular bird's nest, but there were many creatures that could nest in trees... With regret, Amelia moved horizontally this time, inching closer. Closer, closer... "AAAAAAAAAAAAA!" Amelia yelled in fright, clinging to the tree's trunk. A creature just flew past her! "Karina! Did you see that?" This time there was no mistaking, Amelia's voice indeed trembled...

Karina startled as the bird flew from the tree. As Amelia let out a yell, Karina squealed. How could she have been so stupid? Obviously since the noises coming were chirp-like and not growls, how could she have not expected to see a bird? Why was she hoping to see a dragon or some other beast?
"Hey Amelia! Are you alright? Yes, I saw the creature. I believe it is a bird. Is there anything else up there? Can you imagine how frightened we were..... we expected a dangerous animal but instead it was a bird... ha-ha..." Karina gave a nervous laugh. Should they follow the bird? And as loudly as it was making the sound, one would think it was in trouble.
"Are you coming down now? Need help? I think we should either wait for it to come back or we should look where it went. I think it is hurt or something. Don't you think? Why else would it be chirping so loudly? Maybe check if it's got a nest. Oooooh! Check for hatchlings or eggs!" Certainty, this day had turned into quite the adventure.
Karina looked around to see in the direction the bird had flown. It looked like it could've headed toward the lake.

The Bird's Song
Amelia clutched the branches near her, panting. What was that?! She could hear Karina's voice yelling in fright from outside. A bird, then. Of course. Just a bird. Amelia closed her eyes, focusing on the smell of the tree and the feeling of it under her fingers, breathing as slowly as possible.
"Y-yeah, I'm fine," she answered, her eyes still closed. "Oh, yeah, I'll take a look," exhaling slowly one last time, Amelia opened her eyes, and found herself staring at the nest she noticed earlier.
"Yeah, it's made this place its own... Poor thing, we probably frightened it straight out of its home..." she mumbled, unsure what she was even saying and whether Karina could hear her. The poor creature?! Who was poor now?! Her, frightened to almost death, or a tiny creature slightly scared?! Having an animal lover for a roommate must have affected her. She did agree with Karina, though; being so frightened by a bird was silly. And yet...
"No, I can handle this," Amelia called back as she started the journey down. Somehow, she managed to find footing in the branches again. It almost felt like her entire body was vibrating along with her heart, making the descend feel more scary than she'd have liked. "Yeah, alright. Did you see where it went?" Amelia agreed mindlessly, focused on her footing.
She stopped once she understood what Karina said. The bird was gone, so it should be safe to climb back, right?... Judging by her pulse, Amelia didn't do a very good job of convincing herself. Regardless, she replied, "Well, yeah, I've seen a nest, lemme check for eggs though..." with a sigh, she retraced her steps. Her heart was still pounding, but the conversation had somewhat soothed her. Or perhaps she just couldn't focus on fear, climbing and talking all at the same time for that long.
Coming close to inspect the nest, Amelia found the tiny white spheres. "Yes!!! It has three! Three eggs!" Amelia called, excited. Wow, she's never seen a bird's eggs so up close before. Was it even safe to be this near to them? When will they hatch?
