Della should be studying for exams, but today she really needed to get out of her broom racing funk. She hadn't touched her Silver Arrow since the eventful last race of the season in May. The lions wouldn't reconvene for another practice until the new school year, but that usually didn't stop the broom racing captain from flying through the courses on her own to clear her head. But after this season's devastating losses, Della had spent the rest of May with a dark cloud over her head and her feet firmly on the ground.

Yesterday, she had spent the day shopping in Hogsmeade, where, against her better judgment, she found herself in a broom and flying supplies shop. It was small, dusty, and off the main street. She had never seen it before. It had a lot of secondhand brooms, but what piqued Della's interest was a pair of flying goggles that were heavily worn and had a strange blue metallic tint to the frame. They looked positively ancient. But there was an aura about them—not like they were enchanted or anything like that, more like they were an old friend. And Della couldn't resist trying them on. They fit like a glove, so she immediately purchased them. The old man who ran the shop smiled and said, "Their previous owner said they were lucky. Enjoy!"

Lucky.

That's all Della needed. A little luck. So here she was strapping them to her face, finally feeling excited about flying again.

Carina wasn't supposed to be near the broom tracks. Out for the cool breeze, she ended up wandering too far down the grassy slope behind the castle. Her boot caught on a root, and she stumbled slightly, managing not to fall, but wincing at the scuff mark left on her tights. Huffing softly, she glanced around to get her bearings and then froze.

Della Barfield.

It wasn't like Carina hadn't noticed her before. Everyone in her year whispered about the Gryffindor fourth-year broom racer, bold, fast, serious, sharp. Carina had only ever seen her from afar, flying like fire through the clouds, a streak of silver and scarlet. But ever since May, Della seemed to have vanished from the skies. And yet, here she was now, tightening the strap of a pair of tarnished-looking goggles. Carina hesitated, then stepped lightly forward, the long grass brushing her knees, she had seen that somewhere before.

She wasn't sure why she spoke. Della didn't seem like the type to enjoy being interrupted, especially not by a first-year. But the way she moved, it wasn't just preparation. It was a return. And Carina knew a thing or two about returns. Carina offered a small, sheepish nod. 'Sorry. I didn't mean to spy. I was just, walking.'

She moved a little closer, eyes scanning the broom, the goggles, Della's stance. The one time she'd tried to fly in class, she'd nearly rolled straight off the broom, and the professor had said something about her needing 'more core strength' and 'less fear.' Still, Carina admired fliers like Della. Not just because of the speed or grace, but the focus. 'Those goggles,' Carina said, her voice barely above the breeze, 'they look familiar, muggle thing?' She tucked her hands into the sleeves of her robes. 'Something lucky?'

Then, Carina just looked up at the sky. It was pale blue, streaked with high, wispy clouds. 'I'm rubbish on a broom,' Carina admitted suddenly, her cheeks flushing slightly. 'Absolutely hopeless. Nearly flew straight into a tree the first week.' She glanced sideways at Della. 'You are great. Like flying isn't something you do, it's something you are.'

'If those goggles make you feel like yourself again,' she added more quietly, 'then maybe they really are lucky.'

Sorry. I didn't mean to spy. I was just, walking.

The voice startled Della. She was laser-focused on the skies; she had completely forgotten about the ground. A first-year was standing before her, Slytherin by the looks of it. Short dark hair, and a scuff on her tights. Della didn't recognize her.

"Oh sorry, do I know you?"

The girl seemed to be more interested in her goggles than in a meet and greet. "These? I just got them. I think they might be of muggle origin. They sure do look it, but the man at the broom supply said they were lucky." Della wasn't sure why she was talking so much, but there was an inviting aura about the younger girl—like she was cutting straight to the meat of a deep conversation, no need to mention the weather or everyday happenings. She seemed especially intuitive. "Before Hogwarts, I would probably have thought luck was made-up, but being here, getting to fly and all, I'm not so sure."

The girl complimented Della's flying prowess while diminishing her own: flying isn't something you do, it's something you are.

It was an interesting idea. Flying had come naturally to Della; even when she didn't win a race, it felt better than walking. But was that her own luck? Certainly, she still worked at it. She had gotten better over the years. But she had witnessed teammates go from bad technique to skilled technicians. "I don't know about that. Maybe you just need more time. Wanna give it a second shot?" Della extended her silver arrow toward the girl, feeling a bit reckless, but excited nonetheless. She had the goggles resting on her forehead. "Who knows? Maybe their luck has a radius; you might pick some up."
