Summer Letters

Dear Amelia,
I hope your summer is filled with wonderful things, like warm breezes, and a few moments where life is lighter than it is during school. Things haven’t been bad, but they have been different and I’m still figuring it out. It was a bit weird to come home this year. I went through the front door expecting everything to be the way I had left it, but that wasn’t the case. Quite a bit of it seemed to have changed while I was away, and nobody told me about any of it. Dad is like a zombie trying to be normal, but I get it.
I am not very good at talking, especially about things that are too deep, and those that I feel are not ready to be put into words. However, I want you to know that if I seem to be a little off, it is not you, it is me. It is just that summer is more difficult this year.
What I am trying to say is that I don’t want the serious part of the letter to take over the entire thing. I have been thinking about Hogwarts more than I had initially anticipated, the silence after the sound of our steps in the corridors, the fact that the castle is always alive with something or the other, and that there is always someone with you when you are feeling quiet and can turn it unexpectedly into something nice. I miss that. In fact, I miss everything.
I know we only formally met that time in the owlery but I’d be lying if I said that I was not curious about what you are up to these days. If you are reading something new, getting into trouble, or finding a little peace in a sunny spot. So, if you ever think of writing back, I will be here probably in the middle of another sock rescue mission from KodoPodo and pretending that this small flat is not too big sometimes.
Take care, Amelia.

Dear Mikey,
I must say it was a surprise getting a letter from you, though certainly not a disappointment.
It’s nice being back home, though I know what you say when you talk about it being different. I had forgotten what it was like to be so lonely and utterly friendless. That is something I certainly miss from Hogwarts. I guess it was the first time I’ve been away from my family for so long, and I’m scared that they will almost forget I exist. Though I really shouldn’t be complaining, grandma made a delicious orange cake yesterday and it sounds like I don’t have it to bad compared to some people. You know you can tell me as much, or little, of your troubles that you wish to.
I must say when your away from somewhere, that is when you really miss a place. I miss the company that is around you wherever you go, and the comfort of the common room, the whispers of the castle and I suppose I even miss those lengthy history of magic essays. So I suppose your right. I miss almost everything about Hogwarts.
Granny and Gramps live on a farm, so there isn’t much to do. I never found that before, but I guess I’m used to being busy. I wish I could say I have been getting into trouble, but I’ve simply been entertaining myself with reading, attempts at playing the piano, and the sort of things you do when your out of ideas to deal with the boredom. I’m sure you are doing things of far more interest than me, and if you feel like inspiring me I’d be eager for any ideas.
I really hope I didn’t bore you with my endless ranting, but I certainly hope I will hear from you again. Perhaps you could even tell me if your sock quest was successful. Before I sign off, I must say that meeting in the owlery was a meeting I haven’t forgotten in the slightest. Perhaps I might have the honor of meeting you again once school returns?
Sincerely,
Amelia Lerelle

Dear Amelia,
Before I move on to everything else, I must address the most shameful part of your letter.
Your handwriting.
It’s… maddeningly flawless. Clean, firm, and graceful, literally, every single word looks like it came from one of those ancient books stored in the library behind the glass. I, on the other hand, seem to have a handwriting that is trying to run away with the paper. Each time I compared your handwriting with mine, I felt like my quill had been possessed. I was forced to almost entirely rewrite the letter I am writing to you.
You mentioned your loneliness, and it really resonated with me. It is interesting how we can be with people in our own homes and still be lonely as ever but in a castle full of people you don’t know, this is almost impossible. Hogwarts keeps you busy with noise, people, life, and chaos, and when all of a sudden it’s not there anymore, it leaves like an echo or something.
It’s great that your grandparents look after you. Orange cake sounds madly delicious. I would give you one of my socks for a piece of that cake, although KodoPodo might disagree, as he seems to be the one who has taken the liberty of all the socks in our house. (Just to let you know about the disaster today he took another one. I found it halfway under the sofa, quite dusty but otherwise intact.)
You want some inspiration? I don’t know if you’ll find what I’m doing to be very inspiring, but to keep myself busy, I’ve been doing some minor things. I’ve been sorting out my old stuff in my room. And playing football with my friends on the primary school pitch. If there is ever a time that you really need a ridiculous, creative task to do, then try to get farm animals a ridiculous trick. Like teaching a goat to sit on command. Or teach reading your piano sheet music to a cow.
Since we’ll be back at school in like two months, I’d like to hang out again. Perhaps, even writing more if you are willing. However, I must warn you: it is highly unlikely that my handwriting will improve.

Dear Mikey,
Why thank you! It has been quite some time since I have received a compliment about my handwriting, and certainly since I’ve received such an elegantly formed one. I suppose when you have little to entertain yourself at a non-magical school, such things become far more valued, or at least to me. And I wouldn’t be so modest on your writing, that is exactly how I feel when I read each of the poetically formed words of your letter. The way each word folds into sentences alike to a silken river, is truly impressive.
You put the effects of loneliness down so well. It’s like a part of you is left at the castle, always pulling you toward the idea of returning. I suppose I will always be homesick from now on. Either for Hogwarts or the farm. I suppose I now have two homes, except one of them has a lot of occupants.
I’m afraid the exchange of a sock doesn’t strike me as a particularly wonderful idea, so you’re more than welcome to leave KokoPodo happy. Grandmother made some cookies which I sent, though I’m not sure what condition they will be in when they arrive. Which reminds me to ask, who exactly is the sock-loving KokoPodo? Forgive me if its a most obviously answered question.
You sound like your enjoying yourself. I took a little of your advice too, and attempted to teach my little Mittens to sit and jump. I shall leave the details of our success out, for the kitten lost interest after two minutes. Perhaps a future as a teacher is not a good idea. Or maybe just not a cat teacher?
I certainly hope I will receive another one of your letters soon, as each one brightens my day.
Sincerely,
Amelia Lerelle

Dear Amelia,
I owe you an explanation regarding KodoPodo. He’s my ferret. Looks harmless. Trust me, he’s not. He’s essentially a big, fluffy crook with a face full of whiskers. Socks are his thing I guess. Not just any socks, mind you. The ones I like are his favorites. Or the ones I’m currently wearing, which is actually very creepy. The other day, I woke up to the softest tug on my ankle, and there he was, dead set on removing my sock as if he were liberating it from a blazing inferno.
Apart from that, life here has been uneventful. Not to complain, but merely less busy than Hogwarts could ever be. Dad has been keeping busy with work, and the days tend to blur together unless I make a conscious effort to distinguish them. Football with old friends has occupied most of my time, or merely rearranging things that don’t really need rearranging, or lounging by the window with a book and trying to convince myself that I’m not simply counting the days until September.
I hope life on the farm has been smooth sailing for you, and that your time there has been filled with small, happy things. I could almost see you trying to teach tricks to Mittens, even if the results were inconclusive. Perhaps cats simply choose not to recognize authority on principle.
I should end it here before it turns into another ramble. Just know that I’m glad you write, and I hope you continue to do so.

Dear Mikey,
I must say that KokoPodo sounds like a most adorable ferret, so perhaps his looks have fooled me. I certainly will be very careful of my socks in his presence, though watching your sock thief in action would be great fun, I admit.
The football and reading sounds rather pleasant, but I certainly see how Hogwarts is so easily missed. Perhaps next holidays I will remain at school…
The farm has been quite enjoyable on the most part. I am being left alone more and more now that the novelty of my return has worn off, though somehow that is almost more enjoyable as I am free to do as I please.
Anyhow, I ought to go before you are left with senseless words. I do apologize for the shortness of this address and I shall certainly write more in my next letter. If there is another one, as I certainly hope there will be.
Sincerely,
Amelia Lerelle
