Anthonie has always been difficult to categorise, for most. Which is precisely why most misread him.
On a skim, he present as another source of noise, with his confidence worn loudly and humor deployed reflexively, that sly charm sharpened to a point. It could be mistaken for frivolity. Assumptions that the wit is a cover, a sheath for emptiness. I have yet to believe that assumption would survive sustained exposure.
Ant is a dreamer, not the idle plebian sort, but among the dangerous of the sorts, those that believe the world is malleable if struck at the correct angle long enough. His famed academic rigor gives his idealism structure; his radicalism bringing its teeth. There's a lack of acceptance for boundaries, specially those conjured by society, by institutions, or by tradition. Much like me, I find him studying them, dissecting them and stepping over them like discarded subjects. This combination, intelligence and audacity, is rare, and rare still is someone so unapologetically alive in our world so wretched.
His greatest strength is also his most vital flaw: he believes. Deeply. In ideas, in people, in futures that have not earned right to exist. It makes him magnetic to most, but it also makes him reckless. He bends rules not for the sake of "must" but because he can. I've seen this lead him to brilliance, but it also leads to unnecessary fallout that he laughs off more easily than he should.
Academia is not a ladder to him, not a means to an end. He values wisdom without posturing. To him, these are weapons, a lens, a responsibility he carries. The boy wonder wants to change the world and genuinely believes he might be able to, and I believe him. Provided he is clever enough and stubborn enough to outlast the oldguard.
Socially, he is a little exhausting. Boisterous even. He leaves impressions easily and forgets how deeply other might feel them.
Yet, he remains one of mine.
Since childhood and across continents. Distance never eroded trust. If anything, it refined it. Anthonie is among the very few I would trust with my secrets, my contingency plans. Fewer still with my life. He is an ally by choice, a brother by circumstance and more importantly from a much better mother.
After America, I had hoped we'd grow closer, the three of us. Shared chaos tends to do so. Instead there begun a distance. Subtle, not hostile, but present. A tiny rupture. More so an unfulfilled trajectory. I noticed it, did not address it. That is on me.
I am aware of the bond with Katherine.
It comes easy, natural, unforced. They share something that moves without effort or calculation. I often found myself observing it with approval and something less charitable. Jealousy, if one insists on precision of my words. I doubt I will ever have that with her again.
I am, after all, the primary reason it fractured.
If Anthonie resents me for the summer, he has yet to show it. If he does not, then there's generosity far exceeding mine.
Either way, he remains trusted, counted and Chosen. And that is not a designation I grant lightly.
