Nice bumping into you.
Since after the Christmas holidays, Lydia had found herself spending more and more time with her textbooks rather than with actual people.
She couldn’t help it though, she wanted to keep her grades high and wanted to keep learning as much as she could.
That day she had chosen to study at the Hufflepuff table in the Great Hall, abandoning her usual spot at the library.
As usual, Lydia’s nose was buried in one of her books, “Magical drafts and potions” open in front of her as she frantically copied notes onto her parchment paper.
Potions would have been her next class for the day, and she really liked it even if she had to do a lot of extra study for it. It was quite a difficult subject, but since the very first lesson Lydia had taken a particular interest in it.
Lost into the words on the pages, the young Hufflepuff had not realised that if she would have continued that way, she would have ended up being late for her class.
When a fellow Hufflepuff laughed loudly a couple of seats from her, Lydia looked up and then stared at her watch, her face slowly transforming from concentrated to almost panicked.
Yep, she was definitely going to be late for her class.
Lydia quickly stood up and started gathering Herndon’s belongings, putting some papers in her backpack as she kept the rest of her books in her arms.
She quickly exited from the Great Hall and almost ran through the Small Hall, trying to avoid people as much as she could so that she wouldn’t knock anyone over.
She had almost made it, the door of the Small Hall only a couple of meters away from her, when all of a sudden a person appeared in front of her.
She couldn’t do anything to avoid them, the impact was certain, and all that Lydia could think about was that she hoped she would not end up hurting the other student.
The moment that she bumped into the fellow student, all of her books fell to the ground, her notes sprinkled on the floor.
“I’m so sorry! I didn’t see you and I wasn’t looking where I was going!” she said apologetically, her cheeks red from the embarrassment.

Nice bumping into you.
Leah had been walking slowly through the thin crowd, absentmindedly dodging anyone in the way as she flicked through her book, when she felt something collide with her side and knock her over. With a yelp, she toppled to the floor, completely bewildered by all of the books and notes falling around her.
Barely a few feet away, flushed bright red and apologising from her spot on the floor, sat another girl. Leah blinked in confusion, trying to work out what had just happened.
The orange haired girl seemed to be saying she had bumped into her... Oh.
"No, wait, this was definitely my bad," Leah said quickly. "I wasn't looking where I was going, which isn't smart of me." She chuckled. "I guess that's why I'm not in Ravenclaw!"
After having retrieved her book from next to her, Leah got to her feet and offered the other girl her hand to help her to her feet. The books and notes were still everywhere, so she then started to try and pick them up.
"You have a... lot of books," Leah commented, trying not to sound rude. "Are you a first year too?"
Because Leah definitely didn't have nearly as many books, and it was so far into the year already! Merlin, it was over halfway through! Was she really behind or was this girl she was talking to a genius of some sort?

Lydia looked at the girl that she had just run over and chuckled. ”I guess that makes two of us,” she said and then accepted the girl’s hand and got up on her feet.
She looked on the floor and a horrified groan left her lips as she tried to put an order into the mess she had made.
“Yeah, I’m a first year! Hufflepuff as well!” Lydia said with bright cheeks as she pointed to the girl’s tie, the Hufflepuff color standing out.
“But I’m sure I have way more books than necessary. I mean, I just love to learn new things, ‘cause my family is a muggle family, so everything related to magic is too interesting but difficult at the same time for me,” she said as she finished collecting her books and offered the other girl a smile.
“I’m Lydia, by the way,” Lydia added and then tried to shake the other girl’s hand, but she couldn’t manage because of all the books she had in her hands.
The other Hufflepuff looked extremely friendly and nice, and Lydia really appreciated her help with gathering all the books.
“I swear I’m not usually this clumsy! But I was, well, I am late to my potion class, and I like to arrive there a little bit earlier so I can ask the professor for more research material. Me and potion have a complicated relationship,” she sighed.
She really hoped that the other girl didn’t think all that Lydia could do was bump into people and talk fast.

Nice bumping into you.
Leah shook her head in amazement. Not many of her friends from the Muggle world loved studies, and she had picked up from them the same inclination to procrastinate and choose some other fun activity instead. Now she was here, of course, she had been a lot more enthusiastic, but the novelty had worn off over time.
"That makes sense, I guess," she said. "If this whole world is new to you, I wouldn't blame you for wanting to learn everything about it. My mum is a witch, so I'm sort of used to magic, but this whole thing must be crazy for you."
The other girl - Lydia - moved as if to shake her hand but quickly gave up, and Leah stifled a giggle.
"My name's Leah," she replied, putting her book into her bag. "I think I have that class too. Do you want me to hold a couple of books for you?"
She listened to Lydia and briefly wondered what sort of research materials she would need. What kind of research, anyway? Her siblings had never mentioned that. And as for being early to class?
"I can't imagine getting to class early every time," Leah grinned. "I always spend too long talking to the paintings in the hall. I just never get how they work!"
Since having been put into an art-themed dormitory, Leah's love for it had only grown. It was often hard to resist the urge to doodle on her parchment during boring lessons.

Nice bumping into you.
Lydia nodded and listened as the other girl talked. It made sense that for her some things were normal, the same way that they would have been for Lydia if she wouldn’t have been a Muggle-born.
“Everything is just so fascinating! My parents are muggles, so I’ve never really known anything about magic, and since the beginning of the school I just kind of want to know more of it!” Lydia admitted with her voice full of excitement.
“Nice to meet you Leah!” she said with a bright smile and then quickly nodded. “Oh yes please! I don’t know what I was thinking today, I’ve clearly exaggerated with the amount of books,” she admitted a little embarrassed as she gave a couple of her books to Leah.
At Leah’s words, Lydia felt her face light up and she instantly knew that her cheeks were bright red.
She knew that most of the extra work that she was doing would have been “wasted time”, since it wasn’t necessarily part of the study program, but she couldn’t help it.
Thinking back at Sorting Hat putting her in Hufflepuff, Lydia often wondered if maybe she should have been in Ravenclaw; after all, knowledge and wisdom where their main traits. But she knew that Hufflepuff was the right fit for her.
As she listened to Leah talking about the paintings, Lydia noticed how excited and happy the other girl sounded.
“The paintings are so cool! I always wanted to chat with some of them, but I’m always scared of disturbing them!” she admitted.
“I think the process of painting them might involve some kind of variation of the developing solution that is used for the photographs,” she wondered out loud; that was definitely a question that she could have asked to Professor Price!

Nice bumping into you.
This wasn't the first time Leah had discussed this with a Muggleborn, and she knew it probably wouldn't be her last, but each new person seemed to have a different view of how it felt to be suddenly introduced to this world. Lydia, for example, seemed to be taking the news extraordinarily well.
"I guess there's things about this school and magic that I don't know, even though I was raised with it," Leah admitted. "There's so much history and theory - actually, you probably know more about it than me at this point, if you've been reading up on it since the start of the year!"
She giggled lightly at the irony, before quickly stopping. She'd forgotten she wasn't supposed to laugh at her own jokes.
Picking up a few books from Lydia, she noticed the other blush. She really seemed to do that a lot - was it because of how light her skin was? Maybe. Leah wasn't sure - she was only eleven, she reminded herself.
"Honestly, the paintings can be a bit intimidating," she agreed. "I've been scolded by several already! But some of them have such interesting stories, and others will talk for hours and hours, and I just think it's amazing!"
Of course, she'd seen magical paintings before, but not so many! Hogwarts really surprised at every turn.
"Variation of what?" she said, hearing Lydia talk about something to do with photographs. Then she lit up. "Do you know how they make them?"

Nice bumping into you.
Lydia couldn’t help but smile at Leah’s joke, her laugh a high pitched sound, followed by what could be described as a piggy laugh.
“I mean, at first all of this-” Lydia said gesturing around herself, “was quite overwhelming. But I think I’ve gotten used to it now... well, more or less,”
Lydia listened to Leah talk about her experience with the paintings, and she found herself thinking that maybe one day the other girl could introduce her to some of the people in the paintings.
She had always been quite good at listening to people’s stories, and she could only imagine the adventures the people in those paintings had lived!
“Maybe one day, if you’d like, we could talk with one of the paintings together?” Lydia asked her, and she really hoped Leah would have said yes. Otherwise, who knew when the red headed girl would have gathered the courage to speak with one of them?
“I mean, I don’t know exactly how they make them,” she started to explain, “but when I was working on one of the potion’s homework I did read that to make the pictures move they use a developing solution that can make the photographs move. So I assume that maybe they might mix that solution with the colour when these portraits get painted?” Lydia said and she hoped she was right, because she didn’t want to give Leah the wrong explanation about something that she was clearly passionate about.
“You really like paintings, don’t you?” she asked her with a smile.
“When I was still in my Muggle school, History of Art was one of my favourite subjects!” Lydia made a mental note to ask her parents in her next owl to send her a couple of the books about paintings that she had back home, this way she could show them to Leah and who knows, maybe she will like also Muggle painters!

Nice bumping into you.
Leah's eyes widened. "If you want to, of course I'll bring you along next time!"
It would be wonderful to have an actual human with her when talking to the paintings, especially as some of them tried to confuse her by running around all the frames nearby. These ones were the pranksters and ended up being quite friendly when Leah got around to talking to them, so she usually didn't mind, but it would be nice to be able to have someone relate to how annoying some of them could be.
After hearing Lydia talk about the developing solution, she beamed. "That's so cool! I didn't know that's how they make photos move. I guess I took it for granted! I wish they taught magical art here - it would be my favourite subject if it existed."
Then she nodded. "Yep! I love art in general, but painting is a favourite for me because I've tried it a lot before. I'd be useless at, say, sculpting. How about you?"
What she didn't mention was that really, it was the paintings she had seen everywhere that had really inspired her, especially one in particular...
"I went to Muggle school," Leah said, "but we never did history of art. Actually, we did learn about Van Gogh and Bansky and stuff, if that counts?"

Lydia couldn’t help the big smile that appeared on her face when Leah agreed on letting her come along to talk with some of the paintings.
“That would be an amazing subject! Can you imagine? They could have the paintings tell us their story and have artists come to the school and maybe even laboratories where we could do some paintings!” Lydia said excitedly. She would have really loved a class like that.
“I’m not that good at painting, but I like to do it anyway! As long as it’s fun and it relaxes me, I’ll do it,” she answered Leah and nodded, “Yeah, I’d be terrible at sculpting! I really like art in general and any form, it’s really fascinating!”
Lydia nodded along as Leah talked, and her eyes light up when the girl mentioned Van Gogh. “Van Gogh it’s one of my favourite painters ever, together with Monet! I wish I knew more about wizard painters, and about the history of magical art,”
When she finished talking, Lydia gave a bright smile to Leah. She was glad that of all people, she had bumped into her.
“Do you also have potion as next class?” She asked her then, suddenly remembering about the class.

"I'm getting excited just hearing your ideas," Leah said, her voice rising. "I'd love to meet an artist! It's basically my dream job... ooh, it would be like an open day but for artists! Especially a magical one, because then maybe we really could find out how they're made." She laughed.
Raising an eyebrow, she added, "I'm sure you're great at art, and even if not, practice would improve it! It's not like maths, which I can never get even with all the exercise questions I used to practice with." She pulled a face as she recalled them. Of course it had been maths homework which led to her finding out she had magic - it was just so annoying!
"But I agree, art is the best! My siblings never got into it, but it's their loss, right?"
Leah remembered how her family had reacted the first time she had said she wanted to be an artist. They had all nodded at her in a patronising matter as if she would give up on the idea in a few years. And though she'd considered it, she still had the same passion for it.
"I do, yeah," she added about the potions class.
