______________________§___________________It was a sunny day outside, WAY too hot for Azrael's liking...then again, he didn't like the heat or the sun at all, so coming from him? It probably wasn't even that bad to begin with.
The day had started well enough, and he wasn't planning on doing much after finishing his classes- so he decided to head outside for a change...now, one thing about Azrael is the fact that his skin is extremely sensitive to the sun and heat- why? Because his family is weird and they don't go out at all, they live in the middle of nowhere, are active at night (and go out during it only), live in a gothic manor that no one cares to approach out of fear from Azrael and his family (who are actually pretty nice, just...eerie- and they hate company so staying away IS probably a good idea) and they dress like they're going to a fancy dinner 24/7 regardless if they're just out for 3 minutes to water the plants.
And BECAUSE they don't go out at all, his skin ahs grown pale and sensitive... who's skin wouldn't? After years with barely any sun (if at all), it's bound to have consequences...not that he hates it, he enjoys the quietness of his home and the calm around his family- and he hates going out too so it's not like he's trying to get away, anyways.
As he walks, the very few people already outside have stopped to stare or hush down their conversations....his face isn't visible, mostly from the umbrella he's carrying to shield himself from the sun- now, this umbrella? Something his parents got for him when he was born, sure...a newborn may not need one, but because of their lifestyle they knew he would most likely need one when he was older- it's a family tradition of sorts, each member gets one from birth and they use it all throughout their lives.
Each one, while they look the same- has a unique riddle about each person, it only appears in the dark, so whenever a shadow casts on the handle? You can get a small glimpse of it if you're lucky, and at night? You can get a full look at what it says- each riddle is only completed once the owner reaches adulthood OR finds their purpose.
Azrael's riddle doesn't have an answer still, but there's no doubt he'll get it soon...
Suddenly, while he was walking along the shade of the trees, he heard someone's footsteps near him- he lifted the umbrella slightly so his eyes could see upfront- revealing the upper half of his face...his big, wide, owl like eyes and his small pupils- the eyes that seem unblinking regardless of how you look at them.
And when he did look up? He spotted a girl his age, had she spotted him too? Did she spot him first? Or did Azrael simply happen to cross paths with someone? It's not clear, at least not right now; the cold air coming from his umbrella was swept up by the wind, and slowly carried in the direction of the girl- the umbrella is enchanted to cast a VERY cold air on whoever is under it, it's to keep the owner cold (like the Holloway family likes it), but it's enough to have anyone else shivering.

Walking around outside, particularly in the blaring sunny day, was not an activity Jrue enjoyed. Sure, she loved the sunlight just as much as anybody else, but it was not convenient for a Dhampir like her. Too long in the rays and she'd have burnt, boily blistery skin that hurt like hell. She much preferred the rain, or the mist, or just plain old clouds protecting her baby sensitive skin.

And yet she found herself perched atop a bench, sunscreen in hand, satchel on the ground beneath her feet. She lathered it onto her skin, a light white film on her knuckles and nose as she smoothed it about, her hands coated in the globby substance. Yuck... She thought, smearing the rest into her bare arms and placing the container, cap replaced, into her purse.
It was a fine temperature, but that rays were much not needed.
Jrue picked her book back up, it's red, leathery cover cool on her fingers. She drummed them on the cover, humming to herself as she flipped it open. 1984, a classic book. One of her favorites. She rested her fingers along the spine as she read through the words, soaking up the story and treasuring every word....
...before being so rudely interrupted by an umbrella thwacking her in the face. What was with people or things running into her lately? First Arthur Northwood, an owl on its way through the courtyard, now an umbrella? Was she a human magnet? Jrue set her book down, grabbing a hold of the umbrella handle, the metal cold to the touch. She traced her hand over the intricate design, standing to look for the owner of the runaway brellie. As she surveyed the courtyard, she noticed the parting of students, and the figure of a solitary boy standing in the middle.
Peculiar... must be his! She smiled at him, wandering over, her boots thunking on the stone flooring. ¨I noticed you let go of this, and you look like you've got places to go, so I thought I'd ought to return it to you as soon as possible!" She said, brushing a strand of hair off her face and tucking it neatly behind her ear.
"Nice get up. Is it for a renfaire? Orrr a Scottish tea party? No no, not the last one. I'd never wear that to a scottish tea party..." She stifled a laugh, the parasol still clutched in her hand.

Now, THAT was not something he had been expecting... usually, he has a firm grip on his umbrella but the wind had picked up suddenly and caught him off guard... really, he should be more careful...he'd hate to lose it.
It had only been around 40 seconds since his umbrella flew away- and his skin is already red, visibly irritated- his eyes were wider in discomfort, and he seemed to have a hard time keeping his eyes open because of the light all around, as if his eyes were only used to dim lights and darkness.
He's using one of his hands to cover his face- trying to blink the discomfort away, it takes him a bit longer than others to get used to the sudden light...he should've brought something else to protect himself against the sun.
"...It was a gift from my parents."
He responded calmly, voice monotone despite the fact that he was basically melting under the sunlight.
"...may I have it back? My skin is sensitive."
Despite being in pain, he was still pretty polite... anyone with irritated skin like his would probably be demanding their umbrella back- or snatching it if they were particularly in pain- yet he seems to be waiting for an answer, as if ready to accept a "no" and just move on.
he's probably gonna have to start using something else alongside his umbrella... especially since he doesn't own any sunscreen- or something to cover himself up better, his parents warned him things like these could happen but he didn't think much of them.
Which is why his parents were so adamant on homeschooling him like they were homeschooled before him, they were probably hoping he wouldn't get a Hogwarts letter ...but he did, so he went just like they did, even if all 3 of them were neither pleased or sad about it...just... neutral.
______________________§___________________His skin gets irritated from not being used to the sun, because when you barely go out (and when you do, it's at night), your skin won't be the most used to the heat... especially not if your parents are the same as you and all 3 enjoy just staying in, his skin doesn't get too bad... usually just irritated from the shock of the sudden heat, but goes back to normal when he takes refuge under the shade of his umbrella.

Jrue dipped her head, noticing the boys aversion to the sunlight. She held the umbrella up, turning it away from the two to pop it open and hold it up, it's lacey fabric now shielding the two from the Sun's harsh rays.
She bobbed her shoulders up and down. As he shied away from the bright light, she furrowed her eyebrows. "It's alright, I understand your pain. Don't worry though, we're safe under this together," She extended her hand just enough for him to grab the handle of the parasol if he wanted it. Her fingers, slim and cool, held the bottom curve, her pointy, periwinkle blue nails stark contrast against the black.
She smiled at his politeness, grateful for his non outbreak. "What can I say, if you've lost something, I'm your girl to get it back to you. Lost dog, lost pencil, even if you've lost your marbles-" She giggled, hopeful he'd find her attempt at making him smile humorous and worth the effort.
This meeting people thing was getting easier and easier as time went on. Maybe she was getting used to Hogwarts, but it was probably her finding comfort and courage in herself. "I don't believe we've had the pleasure of meeting each other before..." She tilted her head. "Jrue Peterson, at your brellie retrieving services..." She gave him a little curtsy, holding her black skirt at the edge to give herself the "royalty cuteness" effect she was hoping for...
The sun cast down on the top of the umbrella, hitting nothing of her person but just her shoes, the black shiny material reflecting the light. They were scuffed and a little messy, and she gazed at them, her feet resting side by side and facing the boy's shoes. He was wearing regal black ones, and she felt very under dressed compared to him, as if she were a disgrace and needed to be wearing a ball gown to suit his fancy.

Azrael is NOT a dhampir or a vampire, he's just weird, his skin is sensitive to the sun because he and his family are loners and prefer going out sometimes at night only because it usually means that not a lot of people are around, which has caused his skin to not get used to the sun properly and thus now it gets red and irritated when he's out during the day if he doesn't have any protection from the sun- yes, he's considered unsettling and eerie but it's not his aura, it's his eyes, they're big and owl like and he has a bad habit of accidentally spacing out and staring at people intently when they talk, so people consider him eerie, this was placed here to prevent misunderstandings.
______________________§___________________
As he stepped under his umbrella again, he quickly blinked away the discomfort- after a few minutes, his skin was back to normal- it usually just got like that because he never goes out...his skin has never had a chance to properly get used to the sunlight, so now it gets irritated when he's suddenly thrown into the sun either by accident or on purpose if he needs to get somewhere but doesn't have anything to cover himself up with.
His eyes went back to their usual roundness as he looked at the girl his age, he doesn't understand humor- as his parents have always been very literal about everything, and he's never had anyone else to learn from so he doesn't really get it when someone's trying to make him laugh...
"...I don't usually lose anything, but thank you."
he nodded slightly towards her, but his expression didn't change- if anything, his pupils became larger as he turned to look at her again when she did a royal bow...he's never actually seen on in person, only ever heard of how it's done- and while he didn't seem surprised or excited, he tilted his head slightly and asked:
"...are you royalty of sorts? I've never seen anyone who bows like that in person."
now, Azrael can be pretty dense when it comes to socializing- especially when it's something he's not used to seeing...so he always immediately assumes the most "logical" explanations he can come up with, which... would probably be assuming that Jrue is royalty because of the bow.
"...it's a pleasure to meet you, Jrue....My name's Azrael Holloway."
______________________§___________________As he spoke, he seemed to take a moment to look Jrue up and down- not in a mean way, just taking this new person in...he hasn't seen her around, so maybe this would be a good opportunity to get to know new people? Especially since he doesn't have all that many friends.
He seemed to realize that he was dressed a bit too fancy for the place he was currently in- but either way, there was nothing he could do now about it.

Jrue was shocked to find out that the boy in front of her was not used to losing things. Not that she lost things either, just that he seemed the type. That being said, the umbrella did just, fly out of his hand.
Maybe that wasn't a recurring event, despite seeming that it was. On the contrary, Jrue couldn't remember the last time she lost something. She had boxes and baggies and bookshelves and drawers all organized and perfect and in the places they were supposed to be.
She watched the boy blink his eyes, readjusting on her and to the more normal light levels. She blinked back at him, smiling softly as his expression softened. "Royalty? Me? Ha!" Jrue laughed loudly, one simple cackle, before she shook her head. "I wish. I think my great grandfather on my Dad's side was like, 27th in line for the key to the castle, at least.."
She trailed his eyes as he looked her up and down, up and down. She didn't feel judged, more overlooked. Like her mother had told her to do her hair, and she came back, and it was only half done. Well no wonder this boy was so elegant and exquisite. With a name like Azrael, he had to fill the shoes he was in. "Lovely to meet you as well, Azrael." She held out her hand softly for him to shake.
"Are you a Pure blood? Wizard Born? This magic thing is pretty awesome. I grew up with it a bit in my house. I mean, it didn't take up every second of my home life. But it was there." Jrue folded her arms after the handshake, tilting her head down a bit as she looked to the side.
The warmth of the sunlight that hit her feet and the surface of her back was just starting to sink into the surface of her skin, a little warm but not alarmingly so. A 10 longer in the sun and she'd probably have a reaction like Azrael's. She could make up an excuse and leave her new friend, but how rude that would be! Maybe she needed something from her bag... It didn't matter, she could deal with it for now.
She fluffed up her sweater, the white and blue knitted fabric clinging to her shoulders. This burst of sunlight was just a bit too much with the sweater, but she didn't mind it for now. Curse the spirits of the sky and weather for behaving so oddly!

____________________§_____________________Azrael has always been observant, it would be funny if he wasn't with how big his eyes are- imagine unblinkingly staring at people and STILL not noticing many things?
He quickly realized that Jrue was feeling bothered by the sun, and so he shifted the umbrella to cover her too...now, since it's enchnated- it immediately started spelling cold air towards her too, it's made to keep whoever is under it cold...so it feels like you're standing in a newly started snow storm.
He didn't make a fuss about it or even acknowledge what he did, and simply continued to listen to her talk, all while allowing the umbrella to cover them both.
And when she asked if he was a pureblood? He already had an answer rehearsed- it's something he's asked about often, no idea why, he just assumed people are curious about him.
____________________••_____________________§- "...I'm from a pureblood family, I'm sure you haven't heard of use- we keep to ourselves."
____________________••_____________________Azrael and his family are VERY reserved, they're night owls, loners and secretly kind if you ever need help... they're known for helping out other pureblood families anonymously, and also known for carving warnings to stay away on the trees around their manor- as they hate being disturbed, ESPECIALLY during the day when they feel the most sleepy and are less active.
His family has attended Hogwarts for MANY generations, it's gotten to the point where there's at least 1 Holloway every 7 years at Hogwarts.
If you ever attend? You'll probably see or at least hear of the current one that is attending- Azrael's kids will probably attend Hogwarts too, so it's not like it's stopping any time soon.
_____________________••____________________§- "...what about you?"
_____________________••____________________he suddenly asked, wondering if maybe she was also from a pureblood family....not like it would make a difference if she wasn't, he genuinely just doesn't care about anything...not in a bad way, he's just the first one to accept any situation regardless of what it is- you can randomly confess to being the princess of a lot kingdom and he'd probably just stare at you before moving on.
He's never been picky about his friends, so wether or not she's a pureblood really doesn't matter to him, as long as they're not hurting him- then they're gonna be stuck with their own little cryptid named Azrael until they get bored of him.

Jrue rubbed her hands on the back of her neck, massaging the skin with her fingertips. Goose pimples were forming from the warmth, the touch of the rays warm to the touch. She looked back over at Azrael, his eyes scanning over her face again. The shadow cast by his umbrella shifted as he moved it closer in her direction. A swirl of cool air flurried around, intermingling with the prior warmth she'd been forced to stand under.
A pureblood family... Jrue had always wondered what that'd be like. Magic being a constant topic in the household. It wasn't something her parents hid on the down low, but it also didn't consume every conversation or action. Just a charm on the dishes on Thursday night, or a fix for a broken chair. Her dad didn't hate it. He did get a little annoyed when Jrue would accidentally ask him questions instead of her mom. Since he was a muggle, he only knew as much as she did at any given time.
In all honesty, Jrue felt kind of bad for him. Especially since her and her mother got to share their Vampire genes, and he was just.. a doctor. But they were all Petersons, and shared their tempermental and sweet behavior. She blinked her eyes at Azrael as he asked about her.
"I wish, my mom has the magic in the family. On her side it's all Pure bloods, dating back hundreds of years," she paused, glancing around as she checked her facts in her brain, "and it trickled down into my hands, I guess. I just got.. lucky!" She bobbled her head about, folding her hands in front of herself neatly.
She paused for a beat, awkwardly nodding her head in silence, before chiming in again. "On my mom's side, my grandparents were from England, and my parents moved to Scotland short after getting mairrit, so I've grown up flooing with my mother back and forth. Dad likes Scotland more, and he works there mostly full time." Jrue shared, biting the inside of her cheek.
She loved getting to talk and talk. Left to her own devices, she could probably fuel an entire 3 hours worth of conversation before drying up. She smiled at the dark haired boy across from her, pulling her hair over her shoulders in two neat little strands. "So Ravenclaw, huh? Do you like it?"

_____________________§____________________Azrael couldn't imagine a life without magic, he'd probably look like a dehydrated fruit by now if he didn't have his umbrella- he HATES the heat, and without that thing blasting cold air on him whenever he wants it to, he'd probably just end up not going out at all.
Why would he when he can just stay home in the coldness of his room? His mother had made sure it's always cold, just how he loves it- so he's always comfortable in it.
And as for the Ravenclaw comment? He seemed to pause for a moment...did he give off the vibe that he was in Ravenclaw, maybe? Perhaps.
Still, he's actually in Gryffindor- I know, I huge shock to everyone...well, his parents didn't care what house he ended up in as long as he liked it, and Azrael himself? He never cared either, he just didn't expect to be in the loudest house of them all, still...at least he could enjoy his pace at night, when it most mattered to him- he just wishes he could stay up more during the night, he loves the peace and quiet of it...his parents and him are often night owls because of it- it's more peaceful to go out during the night for a stroll then at 2 PM on the scorching heat.
Still, they usually never went out at all...and if they went out at night? It was usually only because they needed to run some errands.
Otherwise, they'd just stay home and sleep.
____________________••_____________________§- "... Actually, I'm in Gryffindor."
____________________••_____________________he didn't seem like it at all, but it was true! His parents were pretty surprised when they found out he was in Gryffindor after he sent them a letter, they hadn't expected their son to be in said house.
They had expected Ravenclaw or maybe Hufflepuff...but Gryffindor? Never, not even in their dreams.
Which I guess makes it even more ironic- who would expect such a strange boy to be in Gryffindor? No one's first guess would be it, so he doesn't blame Jrue for thinking that.

Jrue shrugged her shoulders as she gazed at the boy. What could be going on inside his head? He seemed quite mysterious and silent on the outside. She was curious what kinds of things he was thinking about inside his mind, all bundled up and unspoken. Were they deep, surface level? The kind of thoughts that should stay in your mind rather than be shared aloud for everyone to hear? She assumed this boy wasn't the kind of person who thought stupid, surface level questions. If he spent most of his time in the dark, at night, in his room, he probably thought about, who knows, life, existential woes, the answer to the universe. And being a pure blood those answers were probably trade family secrets they knew already.
She nodded her head softly, and the boys sentence hit her. She widened her eyes, face turning warm and tingly. "Oh- jeez-" She brushed her hands over her face, massaging the T between her eyes. "Sorry, if you can't tell my brains, uh, a little thick sometimes? Sorry... Gryffindor... so that's.. pretty cool?" She said, voice raising by a pitch as she said the last two words.
She rubbed the backs of her arms, turning around to look back at her items on the bench. "I was just sitting here, uh... reading some muggle books, my dad suggested I read.. I mean, I love 1984, but the other ones in my bag.." She puffed up her cheeks, facing the boy again. "Were you just out on a uh.. leisurely stroll?"
Jrue was really running out of stuff to talk about. Maybe the sun really was getting to her. She drummed on the back of her fingers. She really wanted to get to her favorite part... well, the whole book was her favorite part. But she really enjoyed the ending most of all. The suspenseful ending...! She didn't want to leave, that would just be rude. And she had this new friend to meet, and make a fabulous impression on. Maybe she could invite him to lunch in the great hall sometime, rather than ruin her free period? She grinned at him, waiting patiently as he thought.
