Leo’s second month of school was coming to a swift end. The crisp fall weather was beginning to get cooler and cooler by the day. This past month held a lot of memories for him and he was excited to see what more the school year had to offer. That day had been going by like any normal day, Leo attended his classes and talked with some of his friends, all the usual school day things. When he got to his Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson he was excited to see what they would be learning today. He stepped into the room, looking around as students began to take their seats or were talking to friends, and went over to an empty seat. He moved his robes out of the way as he sat down, letting it fall behind him as he opened up his book. He had been working hard on his studies in hopes that it would pay off when he got his grades.
Today’s class was different than their other lessons as they were learning about muggle first aid along with a new spell. Leo initially found it silly that they would need to learn the seemingly useless information the professor began droning on about, groaning softly at first before opening his note up to write. When would he need to actually perform this on him or someone else when they have a multitude of advanced magic techniques to use when they are hurt or sick. But ashe listened he realized maybe it would be useful if only for a quick fix if he was in front of muggles and couldn’t use any magic to heal. No matter what he thought of the lesson himself, Leo inevitably paid close attention to what was taught in the class and wrote careful notes on everything that was said. The lesson today seemed to drag on as Leo was not very interested in learning how to properly bandage up a wound compared to learning the spell the professor would be teaching them after. Cultrofors.
Sadly the more boring part of the lesson wasn’t over just yet as the students all had to pair up with their desk partners to practice bandaging and going over the lesson together. Something that Leo had to partake in one too many times already this year and it was only the end of their second month with a lot more to go. He was never fond of having to work with others in these little projects they gave them, maybe because he never really had to rely on anyone for his work before since he was privately tutored growing up and completed his work all by himself. Or maybe he just figured he was better off doing it alone because many times you hear how others would not be fulfilling their part of the assignment and leave it to only one person. Either way, he was not looking forward to this.
Beside him sat a taller girl with long dark hair and green eyes. After turning to face the girl he realized he recognized her from the boat ride from the first day. He hadn’t said much during their trip so he wasn’t sure if she would actually remember him and he honestly couldn’t remember her name so he decided to introduce himself again. “I suppose we are partners for this, I’m Leo Noxley.” He said and reached his hand out to the girl to be polite as he introduced himself quietly. With the initial greetings out of the way Leo pulled his notebook closer to be able to glance back at it while they are going over the lesson. “Did you want to work on going over the notes first or doing the bandaging practice first?” He asked her, looking up at the clock to check the time before turning back to his notes.

As always, Livia spent her day performing as if always in pursuit of perfection. She woke early, ate healthily, sat with impeccable posture in class, studied during her breaks and did not divulge more information than was strictly necessary. At least, that was what she aimed to do. This day, she had woken up just five minutes later than usual; this intrusion upon her common routine brought great disdain to her heart for the rest of the morning, and she was unable to secure her focus on the tasks at hand. Although she had been beginning to focus on the present by the time she arrived at her class of defence against the dark arts – one she was debating denominating a favourite – she still sought a way out of the stupor in which she had found herself.
Her usual seat was gone, as she arrived only three minutes early instead of her usual five or more, but she still selected an empty seat without much deliberation. She did not take too much notice of the boy next to her, focusing on organising her supplies and readying herself to learn. Today's lesson proved to be something far different than that which she expected from the class; they were not to be learning how to cause damage or defend against it, but rather, how to mitigate it. The concept intrigued the girl, who had seen many an injury on her little brother, and she took finely-inscribed notes on some of the specific aspects of first aid. Although she hoped it would never be something she had to utilise on herself, she was certain there would come a day she could impress someone else with her precise application of the techniques demonstrated in class.
The positive outlook which had finally permeated Livia's sullenness dissipated with the advent of a group project. The girl sighed and glanced sidelong at her desk partner: a boy – one she hadn't had the pleasure (or perhaps the vexation) of speaking to previously – with dark hair and a studious look about him. She watched with blank features as he held out his hand and introduced himself; she catalogued his name within her memory and accepted the handshake. 'Livia Machavariani. It's a pleasure,' she said flatly.
Her gaze travelled to the notebook he moved, and she lifted her eyebrows, although the look in her eyes would still prove largely nonchalant. He posed a question, and she shrugged, having not had enough time to consider all of the outcomes. She remained silent for perhaps longer than he would have liked, although she, of course, could not be certain. She glanced at her own notes, adjusting how her quill rested on its stand, before lifting her chin to meet the boy's gaze once again. 'Revision of our notes should suffice at first,' she opined, the warm rasp of her voice soft against the buzz of chatter otherwise emanating from the other students. 'Staunch adherence to the correct procedures should provide us with success.'
With any luck, her desire for perfection (and inability to settle for anything less) would be made apparent with her words. She kept her gaze on Leo, curious to see how he would wish to proceed.

The boy spoke with a measured calmness to his words, uttering fact instead of opinion. That resulted in Livia's willingness to pay him proper attention. The same boat? As observant as Livia was, she preferred to focus on the long-standing and important realities of life. Trivial details of the boat ride had eluded her; however, as any high-class child bound by societal values ought to, she did her best to recall the other individuals who had shared a boat with her. 'Ah, yes,' she said, unable (although she tried) to make the words anything but flatly uttered. He then mentioned parties, which, of course, irked her, although she would refrain from showing it. Her expression remained as neutral as it had been before; she glanced at Leo sideways through upturned eyes, wondering what angle he might be playing. After all, at most parties, Livia had been adequately debriefed on whatever she had not done absolutely perfectly, be it maintaining eye contact for too long or not having a jovial inflection in her voice. That Leo might have been – no, was; his name was, after all, familiar – present during these events forced her to hold back a scowl.
Such restraint, held in deep disdain by the girl's mother, was often her saving grace.
A small hum of acknowledgement punctuated her glance at Leo. Various methods of riposte rippled through her mind – she could act on her grumpiness and refer to the Noxley family as hardly of import and not requiring remembrance; she could acknowledge that she had indeed witnessed them at numerable events; she could, of course, duly change the subject. She gazed through lowered lashes at the fine script in her notes. Her thrumb brushed over the surface of the parchment, and she exhaled softly before returning her attention to Leo. 'Most certainly. Your surname is quite familiar, of course. I doubt we interacted, though.' She would leave it at that, refusing to elaborate that, for the most part, she was shown off as the prodigal daughter to adults, or forced to play piano while others danced, even if she herself quite enjoyed partner dancing. Nonetheless, it was irrelevant; at any rate, duty always prevailed over pleasure.
Momentarily, Livia was foolish enough to believe that the two high-class youths might be amiable. However, Leo's incessant fidgeting caused her teeth to grind together, which she was forced to rectify as such a movement was quite unladylike. She remained seated with stick-straight posture, this time refusing to mask the disdain in her gaze when he twirled his quill. Did he not understand that could result in ink blots, or ink flying across the room? Merlin forbid his impish movements result in a marring of Livia's exterior; he would have simply been asking to be hexed had he continued.
Swiftly and diligently – why yes, that was the best way to perform any task. The sentiment resonated all the more with the Slytherin, given that his mannerisms had begun to irritate her. She half-listened to his next words, convinced they could each work at their own pace and be done with it, but then he called the lesson 'unnecessary', which gave her pause. 'You aren't such an imbecile as to be unaware that all sorts of first-aid are imperative, no?' She lifted an eyebrow. 'When around Muggles, or when disarmed, we ought to be able to protect and aid those who are dearest to us.' Surely, he would not argue with her statement. In fact, Livia could hardly hide her incredulity at his assumption. Unnecessary? She would like to see him help someone who was bleeding out, sans his wand, sans this lesson.

𝓦hile she answered politely to his mention of her family, he could tell that there was something more behind her response. Although he chose not to question further, despite his curiosity, he didn’t want to have to get into his own family situation. He did wonder if she was as annoyed with the high society as he was but he turned his attention back to the matter at hand and that was getting through this partner work.
Leo noticed that her posture was as straight as an arrow, more so than even his own. He stopped twirling the quill and dipped it in some ink as he wrote a few more notes down. At first there was no response to his words so he began to work again taking her silence as agreement.
He was quickly stopped in his tracks as he heard her speak. His words clearly struck a nerve with the Slytherin girl. An imbecile? He couldn’t help but laugh a little at that but just as quickly stopped laughing and glanced at the girl. Who was she to even insinuate that he was in the first place? “I won’t disagree that some first aid is necessary to learn, maybe just to get you out of the situation, but surely you must agree that there is much more advanced magical care methods that outweigh the mundane care muggles provide with basic first aid.” Leo lowered his quill as the girl now had his full attention. He certainly hadn’t planned on starting a full on argument in class but she was clearly not going to back down on her end, and Leo was not about to either.
“We have many things that can help heal, without the use of a wand.” He noted the lessons they had where they went over many potions and pastes that worked well to heal. “Being around muggles is one thing you cannot control but there have been many who have gotten out of situations and then went to get treated properly, with magical care My father for one.” He was not one to pull out the father being an auror card but his father went all over for work and was put into all sorts of situations. “You know what helped him when he would come back hurt? Magical care.”He quietly scoffed as he turned to look back at his notes. He knew she would continue to argue back but he was not about to let this girl, this rude stuck up girl, bother him. Maybe it was just his upbringing of being a pure blood and purely spending most of his time with others of pure blood upbringing, but he couldn’t find reason in her words.

It appeared as if this ghastly churl's lack of respect for the virtuous knowledge of medicine – and, by extension, their professor – would not cease. Livia slowly set down her quill, resting the finely-trimmed feathers against the desk beneath her. His laughter appalled her, although she would not deign to show it; she would instead stare at him blankly, waiting for the unnecessary action to halt.
Listening, though, was a skill best honed through practice. Thus, when the boy spoke, Livia ensured she met his gaze and observed not only his words, but also the meaning behind them. Of course, that which he spoke was rooted in verity, but even within truth, problems could arise. She could not argue that mages had far superior methods of convalescence than Muggles; this was, indeed, common knowledge. 'Well, yes,' she conceded. 'But, of course, given that we are under seventeen, and also taking into consideration the International Statute of Secrecy, you must know that it is unrealistic to consider us always in possession of magical means of healing.' Calmly, she folded her hands, lacing her fingers together in front of her. Her words were flat.
Truly, the boy's words grated against her. That he disagreed was hardly a malfeasance, but he was arguing against a point Livia had never made. 'I said all forms of first aid, Mr Noxley.' Coolly, in a manner not unlike a lazy cat, she met his gaze again, their assignment pushed to the back of her mind. 'It is unhelpful to stigmatise non-magical forms of first aid when they can provide one with the stability needed to stay alive. Even magical healing cannot doctor death.'
She did not understand why he took so much offence to the idea of Muggle healing methods. She had not disparaged magical healing. In fact, surely, it went without saying that, of course, magical healing was superior to Muggle healing. She should not have had to elucidate that fact. The boy's scoff soured her mood further; not only was he obtuse enough to be unable to comprehend her words, but he seemed filled to the brim with utter disrespect for everyone around him. 'Furthermore,' she added, her voice low, 'what one individual thinks is "unnecessary", another could find useful. I doubt our professor would waste our time as well as his own.'
Her piece said, she calmly returned to her parchment, lifting her quill and readying herself to write. If Mr Noxley was so certain that only one way could be correct, Livia would leave him to his delusions. Even a hare-brained knave so caught up within their own opinions could surely read and follow instructions, which was all that was needed for this assignment.
