Aisling pondered over her History of Magic textbook. So far, classes were coming to her. Even Potions, which she had almost expected to do horrendously at, she was doing surprisingly well. It was safe to say, though, that things were getting overwhelming, particularly in the class she was reviewing for at the moment. All the history of the wizarding world, as much as she was already in love with it, was wildly stark from what little she knew about the Muggle world right before her first instance of magic.
For Aisling, it was reviewing the basics, which consisted of the history of Hogwarts. By now, she had memorized the names of the founders, Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin. That was simple enough, considering all of the Hogwarts houses were named after each founder. Creating the school in the Scottish highlands alone was enough to cement the quartet in wizarding history, though she could tell that Salazar made a good dent in tarnishing his own house's reputation. Then again, from the little knowledge she knew about modern wizarding world history, it didn't take much for Slytherin to be viewed as wicked, and not as a compliment. But why? she thought to herself, all the Slytherins I've met have been wonderful!
For a second, it reminded Aisling of her assignment for her History of Magic class. Professor Break had assigned her class to write an essay on what kind of legacy they wanted to leave behind at Hogwarts, had she been a founder. She looked up from her textbook to see a brunette Slytherin girl not far from her. She seemed a year or two Aisling's senior. She pondered a bit. I reckon if she's like the other Slytherins I've met so far, she thought, maybe her legacy would be to show the wizarding world how good Slytherins could be, that they aren't some cut-out others expect them to be. Or something like that. Aisling had been so lost in thought, she didn't even realize that she was starting to stare off into space, her gaze directly eyeing the Slytherin girl.

A quiet hum escaped Kaitlyn’s lips as she pored over her Ancient Runes textbook. Her fingertip gently passed over the pictures of some of the Elder Futhark runes printed in the text. The temptation was so real. She really wanted to copy the rune symbols for her notes and wanted to practice getting their shapes just right. It looked like a fun practice, in her personal opinion. But the young Slytherin held back. Not necessarily out of fear, but because her various classes have warned against copying the runes. The last thing she wanted to do was to cause a surge of magical energy, all because she couldn’t help herself. Even worse would be for it to happen inside the library. That simply wouldn’t end well for her.
But the lack of drawing symbols in her notes wouldn’t stop this young Slytherin. Nope! Kaitlyn took to writing descriptions of the symbols instead, so that she could still identify them even without the full shape in front of her. So far, she was happy to see it was working. Then again, she had only just started this class as a third-year student. There would be plenty more lessons where that came from.
As the young Slytherin prefect started to scratch out a description of the Fehu. ‘The rune literally represents livestock. Its practical symbology is that of wealth, abundance, and success. How would that be applied with magic? I haven’t the faintest idea. But, its rune looks interesting … kind of like the letter F,’ she observed. Her gentle touch finished running over the lines that represented Fehu, when she felt a sudden uneasy feeling … and one that she was pretty sure wasn’t from running her fingers over the rune … after all, she didn’t attempt to copy it at all … at least for now.
Glancing up from her book, Kaitlyn looked around her. It didn’t take long for her to notice that she was being stared at … by a young girl she had never met before. Just appearance-wise, this girl looked to be younger than her. Maybe second year at most? She hadn’t a clue. The young muggleborn Slytherin prefect rarely knew most new people, especially those who were not in Slytherin. Of course, it wasn’t like that thought ever caused her to not interact with others. Despite being shy, she enjoyed talking to other students in other houses.
To be fair, Kaitlyn wasn’t used to being stared at … who would stare at her, anyway? So, she fidgeted nervously in her seat, her hand nervously playing with her pigtail braids. While she wasn’t put off by the sight, she didn’t know what to feel about it. She tried to look back at her Ancient Runes book, but the girl appeared to still be staring at her. Weird.
The young Slytherin rose from her seat; the gentle click of her heeled Mary Janes echoed with each step. Kaitlyn’s fingertips naturally played with the hem of her uniform skirt. Very cognizant of being in the library, she quietly approached the girl’s table. “Hi,” she greeted her quietly. “I noticed you looking at me … and I just wanted to check to see what was up … if you’re okay sharing it with me?” She proposed, moving her hands to the back of a nearby chair to try to stop her nervous behaviors.

Aisling shook her head when the Slytherin girl spoke. She blinked a few times rapidly. How long had she been staring off into space? "Oh," she stammered. She swallowed and stratched just below her jawbone. "I," she muttered, "I'm sorr ... sorry. I ... I didn't mean to stare." She swallowed again. "Kinda 'away with the fairies' as they say back home," she murmured. She could feel her face get hot. She hadn't been around many students much older than she was, so to her it felt slightly formidable, even moreso than among her peers, especially in Hufflepuff. And to think, Aisling had just been wondering what impact Slytherins, and this Slytherin girl in particular since she was the first Slytherin she saw so soon, wanted to make on not just Hogwarts, but in the wizarding world's history altogether.
Aisling's eyes noticed the book that the Slytherin girl was reading. Ancient runes were etched into its pages. She had seen a few of these before, mainly from Professor Break in her History of Magic class. "Is uh," she sputtered, "is your book for your His...History of Magic class? We were learning a bit about it in my History of Ma ... Magic class, and may ... maybe they're talking about it in your ... your year in that class, too." Aisling scratched at the spot under her jawbone again.

Seeing this younger girl get so flustered and embarrassed so easily made Kaitlyn’s cheeks heat up, as well. Her fingertips nervously moved along the top of the chair. Despite being socially awkward and shy, she had a soft spot for seeing other people embarrassed… especially when she was the reason for why they were embarrassed. While she was a prefect, she hadn’t thrown herself into the position of embarrassing other students and blushing along with them when attempting to assign a detention. More accurately, she hadn’t assigned a detention at all yet. Frankly, she hoped not to have to do so.
A surprised look crossed Kaitlyn’s features when this girl asked about the book she was reading. Kaitlyn glanced back at her Ancient Runes textbook and tilted her head. Wordlessly, she skipped back to the table she was at, collected her book and her enchanted satchel, and skipped back to the table this girl was at. She closed her book and showed it to the younger girl. “This isn’t for History of Magic, although I do recall a few classes that delved into the topic of Ancient Runes,” she replied.
Kaitlyn gently tapped the cover of the textbook. “This is for my Study of Ancient Runes class,” she continued. “I’m a third year, specifically,” she quietly explained. “Do you mind if I join you?” She asked quietly. “Although, my, where are my manners? Hi. My name is Kaitlyn Connor. I’m a third-year Slytherin,” she finished politely and friendly. Noticably absent from her short introduction was the fact that she was a prefect, although that part was easily confirmed by the prefect badge pinned to her chest.
In retrospect, Kaitlyn wasn’t ashamed of being a prefect and didn’t try to hide it. She, however, rarely wore her badge. She often found that there were many students who were simply afraid of prefects, which was never her intention. While she was very surprised to be given the honor of being a prefect, she never assumed that she’d be scary to the other students. Hence, she didn’t thrust her prefect badge in anyone’s face. For that matter, she rarely used being a prefect for much of anything, and hadn’t assigned detentions yet, at all. Then again, she liked to assume that she was a laid-back prefect … or, more accurately, hadn’t witnessed behavior that she thought earned a detention yet.
