Young love. Avery didn’t really know what she had been missing out on until she had experienced it herself the day before. The day before she had done probably one of the biggest things in her life so far. She had admitted her feelings to the boy she deeply cared about ever since she met him. Mikey. Avery laid in the grass. It was the day before the ball. The day before she would get to dance the night away with her new boyfriend. Boyfriend. Avery was still caught up on that word and the fact she had someone to call that.

Avery didn’t have a care in the world. For all she knew the world could be ending around her and she wouldn’t even know it. All she could replay was the day before. The day that she had officially become a girlfriend. Her heart taken by someone. Leaving her finally claimed by at least someone.

She has never expected it when she’d met Mikey. At first glance, she thought that he’d never feel anything more than friends towards her. She had honestly thought the same at first. That was until the day he had saved her. The day when she’d experienced her first asthma attack and he had stayed there with her. Calmed her as she struggled to breathe. Then he’d taken her to the hospital wing to get treated, though she wasn’t actually treated. Avery still could feel the effects on occasion, but nothing as bad as that one day.

Avery closed her eyes for a moment. Relishing in the beauty of the cool morning as she lay there. The sun casting pink, purple, and gold hues across the sky. Avery sighed. Glad that she’d woken early enough to enjoy it.

Then she heard someone walking across the grounds. The soft crunching of grass reminding her where she was. Avery stood up quickly, then relaxed. There was another girl. Avery thought she was a second year like herself, but she couldn’t quite place her name.

That’s why Avery decided to approach her. Why not say hello on such a fine day? “Hello. Doesn’t the day seem very bright and sunny today?” Avery asked with a smile. Shocked at how different she sounded.

A refreshing morning breeze danced through the air, tempting Amelia to linger in the grounds on such a stunning morning for longer. Not much temptation was needed for the girl to be persuaded, for no tasks called her back to the coziness of the common room. No homework. No clubs. No waiting to-do list covering three sheets of paper. There was something truly perfect about being so free. Unusual, but perfect. The first time in quite a while.

As such, Amelia had decided to take advantage of her freedom, taking great pleasure of one of her leisurely walks on the school’s grounds before the day truly started. Then she intended to entertain herself with the lengthy tale of haughty Mr Darcy and his complicated personality, and perhaps enjoy herself with Piper. It seemed, to the young Hufflepuff at least, like a most enjoyable day.

It was intended to be a solitary walk, yet company would have certainly been welcomed. In fact, with the cheery mood taken into account, almost anything would have been easily accepted by the Hufflepuff. So, when Amelia was addressed by a girl who, while she had seen before, hadn’t met, she offered a bright smile.

“It does,” she returned when the girl spoke, “I’m Amelia, by the way.” She added by way of introduction, before raising her eyebrows as if to ask for the other girls name.

Last year this conversation would have had Amelia stuttering with nerves, but since then she had changed considerably. It was if Hogwarts had worked some magic on her. She didn’t have to force herself to continue the conversation, or worry of making an assumption wrong anymore. Instead she just… spoke.

“It’s really pretty this early in the morning. I don’t usually come outside at this time, but I’m certainly not regretting it.” Amelia grinned, gazing up at the watercolor painting of the sky, an awed expression coming across her face. “You seem rather happy?” She suggested, for there was nothing at all to contradict such an assumption. Hopefully she wasn’t prying into someone’s business, but from experience most people were perfectly happy sharing good news.

A soon-to-be friend? Wondered Amelia, picturing herself sitting by the other girl’s side, laughing at some story in ten minutes time. It seemed like a lovely picture. The perfect way to fill a morning like this.

“Nice to meet you, Amelia. I’m Avery.” Avery grinned in the girl’s direction. Was it just her or was the day becoming brighter? Clearer? Happier than normal? Probably just her. Though it did seem a touch warmer. A good sign considering she couldn’t wait to spend the rest of her day soaking in the sun and enjoying life as it was. She was finally happy for the first time in ages.

Avery loved the sunrise that morning. It was beautiful as colors streaked across the sky as if they had been painted. It was surreal and Avery couldn’t believe it wasn’t a painting. How could something so beautiful be so real? With everything bad in Avery’s life. She was happy to find a light in the dark. A window to let the light in.

“It really is beautiful. I try to come out here this early as much as I can just to watch this. Though this morning seems to be extra vibrant.” Avery smiled in Amelia’s direction.

Avery was snapped out of her daydream when Amelia commented about how happy Avery seemed. She was embarrassed for a moment. She guessed that her love struck self was obvious enough for everyone to notice. Well, better out than in with the truth then!

“Happy? Oh yes! I had the most splendid day yesterday! Yesterday, I finally became a girlfriend to you wouldn’t guess who! Mikey Forville.” Avery smiled and sighed slightly. Happy that she could now say she was taken, but also surprised still at saying the word ‘girlfriend’ when referring to herself. It was surreal!

Avery wondered if the girl knew Mikey. He seemed to know many people, so maybe they had met at some point? Well, Avery would just have to wait and find out! She did have all day to enjoy!

Avery. The name reminded her of birds flying freely through the morning sky. A refreshing ring to it, the name did have.

As introductions were made, Amelia couldn’t help return Avery’s grin. Her rosy cheeks lifted gleefully, pulling the rest of her face with it. Early as it seemed to be roaming the grounds and conversing with another student, Amelia would eagerly have woken to the beauties of the morning any other day. It was a high compliment that the small girl was still in awe of the sheer beauty that the school and its surrounds held. Maybe she never would get used to it.

Amelia smiled cheerily as Avery continued to speak. Her somewhat laid back expression paved into interest and a happiness for her new acquaintance at the mention of a ‘boyfriend’. That was until the girl spoke her final two words.

It was as if the air in her lungs had evaporated, leaving her breathless and empty. “Mikey Forville?” Amelia repeated in shock, her eyes widening, streaks of horror clinging to her face. The question would achieve nothing, but Amelia was grasping at the hope that her ears might have betrayed her.

It didn’t make sense. Mikey Forville. The boy in the tower. The reluctant letter writer of Ravenclaw. The one that had written to her. And most importantly, the one that had made her stomach spin and her cheeks flush. Him.

Avery was with… him? The name no longer reminded her of freedom. It was a cage, cruelly stealing away everything that mattered. The words spun around Amelia’s head, as she attempted to process the idea. I barely know the boy, Amelia attempted to assure herself. Maybe everything was an overreaction of her imagination. But, surely not. Was their first meeting in the tower simply placing them as acquaintances? Had his charming behavior and the way he had said ‘I hope to see you again human of Hufflepuff’ simply the acts of a friendship? And the elegantly written letters, which she had spent hours responding in her prettiest font, was their nothing to them?

When you like someone, being rational seems to go out the window. Suddenly a nod from a boy creates a beam and a blush. But, Amelia refused to believe she had been mislead. Not by herself. There had been something between them.

It was all too complicated. The way the feelings were bubbling through her, desperate to gain control and overturn her prior happiness. The hurt. The disappointment. The frustration. And that bubbling tickle in her stomach as she thought about him. No. It couldn’t be happening.

A coldness that swept across the Hufflepuff’s face, wiping it clear of any other emotions. Her voice had lost the freedom it had before, and frozen into a sharp, almost sarcastic tone. “Oh, that’s wonderful for you! I couldn’t be happier for you.”

The beaming smile of a carefree girl had merged into a cold frown, only by the prompting of two words.

At first Avery didn't notice the cold frown thrown in her direction. She was too distracted. Too happy for her own good. If she wasn't careful, well, things would escalate quickly. Too quickly for her to keep up with her mind already running in circles and replaying the day before. It was the sharp, sarcastic tone in Amelia's voice that got her. Snapping her from her daydream and into the real world.

She was shocked to see the look upon Amelia's face. It was dark. Cold. Like a dark night with a large storm brewing. Avery would have to tread carefully. Though one thing baffled her. Why had Amelia's mood changed so quickly. The girl's mood was a stark contrast to the happy girl she had met only moments before. Something was wrong, and Avery had to know what.

"What's wrong? Did I say something wrong?" Avery frowned and looked at the ground. Confusion spreading across her insides. It overpowered even the joy and happiness that she felt. She had said something wrong. She knew it, but what exactly had caused Amelia to change her attitude? Was it because of her and Mikey? Or was it something deeper that Avery couldn't see or hear in the girl's voice? Either way, Avery had the feeling she would find out soon.

Avery didn't want to cause conflict with the girl. She seemed like such a nice and friendly person that Avery didn't want to hurt her by saying something she regretted. That was always how people grew apart when they were meant to be together and be friends. She had seen it way too many times herself. Especially in her own family. One argument over something that led to a disaster. Years of not speaking to each other and broken hearts looming in the dark. She shivered internally. Why did life have to be so complex and complicated?

Avery did not know the answer to her own question, but she did know one thing. No matter what happened even if it was something good, a counter would always be there to attack. Though Avery didn't feel like Amelia was trying to attack. No. Avery felt that she misunderstood the girl and her intentions. That was why she wasn't backing down. She had to know if the girl was okay before she decided on her next move. Even if that next move meant backing off and walking away defeated. If it saved their possible friendship, then Avery would do it. Though she desperately hoped that this wouldn't come down to that. She was one to solve problems. Not cause more.

There’s something odd about disappointment. It’s like the world comes crashing down around you, spilling the rubble of your hopes and happiness in distressed, broken piles. Mikey Forville. Avery. Mikey. Not me. The words spun around Amelia’s head like a current of whirling horrors. Surely, it was a joke. An impossible potential.

It would be a lie to say Amelia wasn’t prone to exaggeration of her emotions, yet somehow this was different. She hadn’t lost a mark on an assignment and still got an O. She hadn’t received a gentle reprimand for being a little late to class, which had had barely any impact on her professor’s impression of her. She hasn’t even gotten frustrated in the sanctity of the library. Because this time it wasn’t her fault, right?

She couldn’t even call it heartbreak. Because for heartbreak you had to lose something, and she hadn’t ever had Mikey. He had never been hers to lose. He hadn’t liked Amelia as anything more than a friend. She had been a friend. Those words hit Amelia hard, spinning a bitter fog through her mind and slowly piercing a spear deeper into her heart.

Lost among the cruel workings of her thoughts, Amelia was only bought back when she heard the sound of a girl’s voice. Avery. The concoction of too many different emotions caused a smirking glare to cross the young girl’s face, before she forced it into a controlled frown.

“I’m fine. It’s none of your business.” The words came out sharp, harsh. The tone of someone who was clearly not fine.

It was unfair to Avery. Amelia knew that the moment the words came out of her mouth. The girl didn’t seem to be intentionally upsetting the Hufflepuff, and returning with rudeness was, quite frankly, rude. It seemed however that, once more, Amelia’s feelings took over and her reaction was led by them.

It was unfair anyhow. All of this. And somehow, the cruel hurt that pinched at the young girl’s chest made up for the sharpness of her words and her snarling expression. Fairness was overrated anyway.

Avery closed her mouth. She didn't know what to say. Were there even words to express how she was feeling in that moment? Avery felt as if she had done something wrong. Maybe she had made a mistake. A mistake that was irreversible. What was she going to do now?

"I'm so sorry. I had no idea. I wouldn't have even asked him if I knew that you liked him in that way." Avery spoke softly. Her voice was barely audible. She didn't even know if Amelia could hear her.

Silence stretched between them. A silence that pained Avery. What else was there to do but wait? If the girl wanted to not speak to her again, Avery would respect that. If she did want to talk, well, Avery would listen. She owed the girl that much and so much more. Avery was the one who had uprooted the girl, and Avery had nothing left to do.

"If you want me to go, I respect that, but I'll stay and listen if you want me to." Avery smiled gently. She hoped the girl could hear the sincerity in her voice.

The breeze blew silently. Echoing the tension in the air that could have been cut with a knife. Avery flexed her fingers. An attempt to shake off the feeling of dread creeping into her. As the silence stretched on she had the feeling this meeting was going to end badly. Worse than she had first expected.
