| . | verity𝓗aving late night classes were a nuisance. Having late night classes on a Monday were even worse. Granted, only one subject in the entire Hogwarts curriculum asked for such a schedule. But that didn't soften the pain of having to climb up an endless flight of stairs to the Astronomy classroom, and since the weather was starting to frost over, the stairs were either wet with condensation or just completely frozen over. A beautiful accident just waiting to happen. But they were here, learning about planets and whatever spell the professor managed to weave in. At this point, Vera had learned Astronomy was not her forte and that the only reason she was still coming up was (1) it was a required subject, and (2) they taught some pretty solid spells. The first few lessons were fun, of course. But now, almost three months into this class, almost three months of climbing the tower, and she was ready to give up. Vera sat through the night's lesson on more planets. She wrote the names into her notebook. Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Then, notes. Saturn has more rings than Jupiter (274 versus 97). Mars is named after the Roman god of war, bearing the same name. The Asteroid Belt has C(hondrite), S(tony), and M(etallic) types. Saturn's density is so light it can float in a bathtub. She wasn't entirely sure how much she needed for the final exam at the end of year (if there was one), but these seemed enough. While her notes were rather short, the lesson itself was long. For the most part, she stared at the board, hoping the passive reading would do wonders for her memory. She knew it wouldn't, of course, but with how late the lesson was, she no longer cared too much. There were books that she could study from once it was time for the tests. Finally, finally, it was time to learn a spell. When the professor demonstrated it, Vera woke up a little bit. The Shooting Spell, harmful to animals and definitely harmful to humans. Vera hadn't become violent during her time at Hogwarts, per se, but she had started to consider which spells were important for her to learn so she could use them in Duelling. This was one of them, right? The wand movement was simple enough. Point and jab. The pronunciation... They got up and each faced a figurine the professor offered for them to practice on. Putting it down and pointing at it gave her flashbacks to the time she levitated her lip balm with Marshal and a few other students. With a deep breath, she raised her wand and began the spell learning process. Perhaps it was the exhaustion. Perhaps it was her attitude. Either way, Vera tried the first time and her heart stopped as the recoil almost had her falling backwards onto the floor. No luck. Well, that was to be expected. No one ever cast a spell on their first try unless they were an absolute perfectionist. She tried again. The second time was somehow worse than the last, as the rock that was supposed to fly towards the figurine fell at her feet, and an embarrassingly small size, no less. Vera took in a deep breath and closed her eyes. There were sharp pains growing at the sides of her head. A headache. Perfect! Just what she needed. She was exhausted, sleepy, and now she had a headache. Opening her eyes made the headache increase tenfold, and shaking it off was not so smart. Vera could only take one more deep breath, point her wand at the figurine, and say the incantation. One. Two. Nothing. Vera couldn't help the loud grumble that came from her throat. She looked up at the ceiling and started contemplating all of the life decisions she made that led her to this point. This was so, so infuriating. |

The days were getting cooler and cooler as the days rolled on into late fall and towards winter. Fall was always a favorite season for Leo but wintertime was less exciting. While he loved the snow and playing around in it, the cold weather and wind that came with the winter season was not something he was looking forward to. The walk up to the high classroom for Astronomy was one of those things he enjoyed but now was enjoying less and less as it became colder. The classroom being so high up in the castle and always taking place at night made it less enjoyable during the cold nights. Besides that, with the class being so late he would come in tired after having gone through the normal day of classes. The time that he should be heading to bed on a normal day was when the class was taking place. Despite all that he enjoyed the class, although it wasn’t easy, but he found the subject itself interesting.
When he arrived at the class he sat down at one of the open seats, looking around as his other classmates settled in for their late night lesson. Leo listened as the lecture on some more planets began. For each of the planets that the professor discussed Leo would write everything down and organize it neatly so he would be able to go back and study it later, preferably with a not as tired mind. He was particularly tired that day but he did his best to stay focused and write as much down as he could from what was being discussed. He found the names for Mars, Saturn and Jupiter interesting since it was named after Roman Gods and was trying to remember their Greek counterparts. He narrowly avoided getting sidetracked thinking about the Gods and put his focus back on the lesson to continue writing notes about the planet’s moons, surfaces, etc.
After what seemed like ages of learning about how many rings and moons they had, it was finally the part of the lesson most of the students were looking forward to, learning a new spell. Today they would be learning the shooting spell, Jaculor. When done correctly they would be able to send a small rock shooting out of their wands along with an orange light. The spell was definitely more useful on animals than humans since it would only send a small rock shooting out but even so it could definitely come in handy against an opponent. Leo was careful to write down everything the professor had put on the board as well as what was being explained in the lecture. Point and jab. He wrote in his notes for the wand movement and next to it the spell incantation and the pronunciation. Jaculor, JACK-u-LORE.
After writing down everything in his notes, Leo took the action figure and moved to find a space to practice away from the others. He placed the toy down, leaving some distance between it and him before sitting down across from it. After looking over his notes one more time, he looked around the room as others started practicing and started his own attempts. He went over the pronunciation and movements a couple times before picking up his wand to give it a try. When he pointed his wand and said the spell the first time nothing happened. This was to be expected at this point, he liked to try to get it in the first few tries but nothing would ever happen without a little practice. He tried again, no luck. He took a deep breath in and out, putting all his concentration on the action figure and tried once more. This time he saw the orange light shine and was able to send a small rock shooting out of the tip of the wand towards the toy, knocking it down.
Leo went and picked up the figurine and looked around the room to see what the other students were doing. Some were also successful while others were still trying to get it. He noticed a girl nearby him and recognized her from the tutoring session with the upperclassman Marshal. Leo remembered her well now that he got a better look at her, she was the one who had chosen to use her lip balm instead of her sock. She had also been on his boat for the ride across the Great Lake the first night. Verity was her name. As he watched her he noticed she was having a hard time getting the spell right. It was clear she was getting frustrated, something Leo knew the feeling of very well with him trying to be a perfectionist with everything. But what he wasn’t expecting was what had happened next. After she went to try again and failed, the frustration in her face grew more apparent, made even more clear as he watched the familiar bright red color wash over her normal blonde hair.
The familiar feelings of when he had the same things happen at home suddenly shot through his mind watching her hair change. But the next thought was there was another student with metamorphmagus in his year, in his class even. Someone he could relate to on a different level than some other students. Admittedly he felt bad for her not out of pity or anything but because it wasn’t the most fun thing in the world having your emotions be so easily seen and made known to everyone like that. He hadn’t really talked to her before so he wasn’t sure if it was his place to really say anything but at this moment he pushed the shyness away to go over to her. Even as he went over to her side he didn’t know what to say to her that would really be of any help or comfort but he was determined to at least try. “Excuse me,” he started, speaking softly to not draw any more attention. “Are you okay?” It was a silly question given the circumstances but since they weren’t close or anything yet he didn’t know what more to say although he wanted to help if he could.

| . | verity𝓥era was normally calm, collected, and not at all one who would let the emotions get better of her. Her mother had emphasized that emotional women hardly ever got the outcome they wanted unless they wanted to potentially lose their reputation, maybe even their husband, so she had to keep her emotions in check. It wasn't an outrageous ask; the children who threw tantrums at events often soured the mood. But it wasn't just about image. Vera opened her eyes and brought her head back down to normal eye level. She would've responded with a noncommittal "Yes, just tired. Apologies for the disturbance" if she hadn't immediately noticed the bright red tint in the corner of her eye. When she looked further down towards her shoulders, her fears were confirmed. In a way, it still was about image, but in a more literal sense. Her family never had an explanation for why she had this sort of condition. Her parents made excuses when the ability first manifested; her extended family simply laughed it off; her father, in particular, would become frustrated if it happened during any of his important events. But Vera could hardly help it. Even the slightest bit of emotion had her appearance changing to some extent. The most obvious were hair colour changes, and the more minor ones were slight facial structure alterations or eye colour. But no matter what it was, as long as someone noticed something off about her appearance, it wasn't allowed. This was possibly the first time Vera actually lashed out on Hogwarts grounds, and the first time an extreme emotion had changed her appearance. She'd done her best to keep her emotions in check, and even when she was frustrated, a few deep breaths would keep her under control. This isn't home, she remembered. No, she was at Hogwarts, learning magic and trying to cast a spell in Astronomy class. This was not an important function where even a minor mishap would lead to a deal being cancelled. Her brothers weren't even here, either. Just a girl, named Verity, learning as much as she could about the Wizarding World, something she didn't even believe existed until she stepped foot onto the train. Vera cleared her throat. "Uhm, yes. Apologies. If you could give me a moment." She closed her eyes and imagined her blonde hair again. Bright red back to the light blonde she'd inherited from her mother. With a few deep breaths, she opened her eyes to the red slowly fading from the ends of her hair. She ran a hand through her hair just to be sure, then hummed once everything went back to normal. Vera looked at her peer again, a flash of recognition in her eyes. "Have we met before?" She asked. While waiting for a response, she tried to think back to the last few months where she'd seen this boy. The boat ride... Other classes? The Fall Ball, perhaps. Or the tutoring session just last week? She shook her head slightly, then put out her hand. "I'm sorry. I don't think I've ever gotten your name. My name is Verity. You are...?" |

Although he had already gone over and spoke to her, Leo was still wondering if it was the best thing to do. He knew he would be embarrassed if it was him since he never liked to let his ability get the better of him or have something like this happen in public, especially in front of his fellow students who would definitely talk. So far he had been lucky, only a few slip ups in front of Rosaline who had already known about his ability but nothing to this extent. He knew his parents would not be happy to hear if his ability slipped out of his control, not after their last talk before he had left for camp about keeping his emotions under control. The stress of that thought happening was enough for him to constantly try to keep himself in check.
When the girl cleared her throat and apologized he just felt something in him that she must be dealing with a similar feeling and situation. He shook his head and offered a friendly smile, “No need to apologize, I understand.” Leo gave her a moment and watched as she closed her eyes, slowly changing her hair back to the light blonde color it was a moment ago.
Leo nodded at her question, realizing he had never properly introduced himself before so it was only fair that she didn’t recognize him right away. “Yes, I believe we shared the same boat the first night.” He said and chuckled softly before speaking again. “You also were in the same tutoring group, I remember because you were the only one who didn’t use your sock to practice the Wingardium Leviosa spell.” He wasn’t sure if this would be enough to spark her memory but he didn’t mind either way if she remembered or not.
As she reached out her hand and introduced herself, he returned the gesture and took her hand to shake it. “I don’t think I ever got to properly introduce myself before so.” He started, smiling softly at the girl before him. “I’m Leo, Leo Noxley. It’s nice to meet you.” Now that they had properly met, he wondered if he should actually ask her about the situation that just happened or if it would be too pushy to ask since they only really just met officially. He honestly was just curious about the Hufflepuff girl and her own abilities since they were the same in that way.
Letting his hand fall back to his side, he looked at her, glancing at her hair. “So you’re a metamorphmagus?” He asked even though the answer was obvious based on the display he had just witnessed. “I hope you don’t take it the wrong way, I’m a metamorphmagus as well.” He admitted, speaking softly and taking a seat to talk comfortably with her. Although she wasn’t asking for proof or anything, he wanted her to at least feel comfortable talking to him about it. Leo closed his eyes and took a moment to focus, letting them change from their usual dark brown color to a golden color. Once he opened his eyes, he looked at the girl again, resting his face in the palm of his hand as he leaned on the desk. “I haven’t gotten to talk to many others with this ability, really only my grandmother. It is frustrating sometimes.” It was true. The ability while not inherently bad or harmful towards others was still something his parents preferred he hide. It just brought this feeling of shame and embarrassment to him because of their views on it. He wondered if her family was the same and if she had to constantly hide it as well.

| . | verity𝓢o she was right. He was the one guy on their boat during the First year ride across the Great Lake, and he was the one guy in the tutoring session with Marshal. It was nice to finally put a name to a face, especially with how often their paths crossed. Leo Noxley, and by the looks of it, a Ravenclaw. Vera chuckled, remembering the Levitation Charm tutoring. "Right, yes. I wasn't comfortable just taking off a sock. I tried not to mind everyone else doing so, but..." She brought a hand to the back of her neck. "Marshal was a bit strange, I'll say that." Which was not meant to be an insult in any way. But waving his sock around their faces was definitely a choice. Not a choice Vera would make if she were to do that sort of thing in the future, but an amusing one nonetheless. It obliterated any walls between mentor and mentees, making the atmosphere less awkward and more playful. Which was always a good thing, of course, because then failing a spell wouldn't be as daunting around someone who could make a joke. Leo's next question opened Vera's eyes. "Metamorphmagus?" The word twisted her tongue. Then, she watched as Leo's eyes turned a striking shade of yellow—the kind cartoons would normally give to snakes. Even as he turned away, she just stared at him and what she had just seen. Was that what this whole appearance-changing ability was? A magical one? Suddenly, it all made sense. After all, how else were Muggles going to explain how a child could change certain features and then return it back to their original state whenever they wanted? That was not normal. There was no scientific explanation for it. Sure, some hair could look brighter outside, maybe even look a different shade under the sunlight, but that was just hair dye and chemicals. People's eye colours could change sometimes, usually as a result of being outside often. But that was a gradual change that occurred simply through age. This was near-instant, intentional. She whispered the word underneath her breath. Me-ta-morph-ma-gus. Metamorphmagus. That's what she was. A metamorphmagus. (Surely there was a shorter word for it. It was starting to become a mouthful.) "Is that what it's called?" She asked. "No one in my family ever knew what it was, nor how it worked. So I've had to keep it under control." Yet another downside to being a Muggle-born. But now that she had learned someone else had the ability, that meant it was genetic. People could pass it down. Vera frowned. But nobody in her family had displayed any sort of ability to change their appearance at will. At least, not in her immediate family in England and Germany. It wouldn't be able to manifest in her if it wasn't in their genes, however, so that meant... She focused her eyes on him again. "Can it skip generations?"

Leo nodded in agreement as he listened to the girl talk. Having to take a sock off in the middle of a lesson certainly was an interesting choice for sure but Leo was happy to take part in the fun. “Yeah, he was an interesting character to say the least but it was a helpful lesson in the end.” Even though it took him a couple tries he did manage to complete the spell then. Most things took a few tries to perfect but nevertheless he continued to put in the work.
He watched her curiously as she reacted confused by the name of their special ability. ’Had she really never heard the actual name for the ability before?’ He thought to himself before it dawned on him that she must come from a non magical family. Sometimes he forgot that fact since he was surrounded by mostly pure bloods or half blood people growing up. While he had been exposed to many muggle things through his aunt, his cousins were still brought up with knowledge of both worlds. It must have been hard to grow up around muggles that didn’t understand the ability, it was hard enough growing up with it in a magical family for himself. Suddenly he felt bad all over for the girl. These uncontrollable changes were the worst and he couldn’t even begin to imagine how she must have felt.
Leo gave a small nod, closing his eyes and forcing them back to their normal dark brown color. “Yes, that’s what we are.” He offered a friendly smile as he sat back in his seat. “I can imagine it was hard not understanding what it was and then having to hide it.” His head tilted slightly as he thought about it. “What did you think it was or were calling it before? You have me curious now.” He chuckled softly, not laughing at her but truly curious what a muggle would think the ability was.
Her next question came at a surprise too. ’She really must not have any magical relatives close to her.’ He nodded once more and looked at her as she seemed focused on him waiting for his reply. “Yeah, it doesn’t show up in every generation. Actually my mother didn’t have the ability but her mother, my grandmother, does. And then my grandmother’s great grandfather had the ability before her.” He smiled at the thought of his grandmother again and how she was the only one who truly understood him and was able to help him with his ability. Maybe now he could pay it forward and help Verity with whatever she had questions about. “You don’t know who in your family it could’ve come from then?” He asked and hoped the question wasn’t coming across insensitive or anything. “I can try to help you with whatever questions you have, or at least to the best of my ability.” Leo offered to the girl, happy to help share the little knowledge he had on the ability with her or anything else she might have had questions about.

| . | verity𝓥era nodded. "It was, and even worse when you know nothing about magic," she chuckled. "I believe the term wizarding society calls it is 'Muggle-born'. Born to two Muggles, or regular humans with no magical abilities." The term was still strange to say. Her mum had kindly informed her over owl that it could likely come from the British slang word 'mug', which was someone who was easily fooled. Vera frowned when she had read it. Compared to 'Pure-blood', it sounded like an insult. But that was not to say it was entirely untrue. When her parents had written off her spontaneous appearance changes as either a trick of the light or playing around with art materials, people would simply nod and move on. If something moved without intervention, or even the sprained ankle from that ballet class when she was younger that healed in a blink, they simply waved it off as a fluke or a miracle. Now that Vera was in magic school, the chances of all that happening were likely to decrease. Being here was supposed to teach her to control it, after all. There would be no more skeptical excuses or dismissing the instance. Still, "I never had a proper name for it. Though, if I remember correctly, my little brother used to call me a shapeshifter." Vera rolled her eyes. "He's not exactly the nicest." Magnus. What would he say when he learned it was a special ability only his sister had? She could imagine his rage already, demanding to their parents why he didn't have it. He was their golden child, after all. No one could be more special than him. He was already hoping for his Hogwarts letter, even though he had yet to show signs of magic. Vera hoped he wouldn't. Vera shook her head."As I mentioned, I'm a Muggle-born. There haven't been any instances of magic until recently when I showed signs. Even my extended family have never shown signs of magic." She sighed. But being born with magical abilities, let alone an ability that could let you change your appearance at will, meant that someone knew at one point. Which side of her family could it be? Her father's? Her mother's? Perhaps even both. Perhaps neither. She was already the only member of the extended family who could practice magic; who's to say the manifestation of it wasn't simply a genetic mutation? Magnus would laugh at that. Vera shook her head. Magnus could scream all he wanted. Hogwarts was her school, and here, in front of her, was someone willing to help her figure out this conundrum. She gave Leo a warm smile. "That would be nice. Thank you." "What else can a Metamorphagus do?" She leaned in to listen.

| . | verity𝓥era let out a breathless 'ah' as Leo spoke. That would explain it, then, how Leo recognised her and hadn't made a huge fuss about it. This whole magic thing, and the whole shapeshifting and changing aspects of their appearance thing, was the norm. Not like Vera's where the norm was a static appearance at all times, lest they go to the salon and get something done. Any magical happenstance was a cause for concern, and maybe the supernatural if such a thing existed. (Vera knew now that the supernatural was very much real, and not so super when it could be someone's entire life. There were ghosts, and werewolves, and vampires roaming around. They existed, and people in the wizarding world hardly batted an eye. Unless they committed assault or some other crime.) Vera's eyes widened at another term. "Animagus?" She repeated. Then, a lightbulb lit up. "Ah, they're the ones who can shift into animals, yes? I believe we talked about it in Transfiguration." She raised an eyebrow, then chuckled. "Ah, I thought older brothers were meant to be the comforting type." Magnus was the only brother she actively disliked. Her father had been disinterested in her as a child, spoiling her with gifts but never attention. All of her dance recitals were attended by her mother or her nanny. All because her father cared less about his daughter and more for his oldest son, who was three years Vera's junior. For a little while, she had been the face of the family at gatherings; now, her brother attended all the events. Of course, considering where Vera was now, this was ideal, but last she heard, her father also wanted to get him tutors for economics and mathematics early. It didn't quite help that their father's constant attention on him practically fueled his ego. Her youngest brother, however, was an absolute delight. Cassius was a carefree little boy, who was not so well-versed in the social circles as his older siblings. Vera figured it was for the best. He had been fascinated with the concept of magic, and even begged to go with his sister on the train. It took a lot of convincing until he calmed down, but Vera could still remember the death grip he had on her dress as he tried to stop her from leaving. She hoped that he could also join her at Hogwarts in four years time. She nodded along as Leo spoke. Then, "I had the same thought. The most I've done before is look through old photo books from my dad's study. I may have to dig deeper considering how far back this might have occurred." If anything. There was this sinking feeling that maybe she wouldn't be able to, with what the Statute of Secrecy make wixen do. How far back did magic have to disappear for her generation to be considered a Muggle-born now? As far as her great-great grandparents? Farther than that? How could magic just disappear from a lineage if someone had the ability? Surely magic was a dominant trait. Vera internally sighed. Genetics for blood purity and magical talent were going to have to be on her reading list this Christmas season. Her eyes widened as Leo mentioned being able to look like another person. Had she been anyone else, she might have opened her mouth in awe as well, but her mother always told her to close it lest flies made a home on her tongue. She had already seen the potential from changing her hair colour, eye colour, and maybe the minor facial structure change, meaning trips to the salon and coloured contact lenses were something she could avoid. But becoming another person? Vera's first thought was that eyewitness testimonies were about to become null with this. Or, maybe they already were; the gene had been around for forever, if she and Leo's heritage had anything to say about it. But seriously, this ability had to come with its own security risks. She could easily pose as another student (given she figured out how to do it to begin with) and enter places she wasn't allowed to. Hell, if she wasn't one, another Metamorphmagus might pose as her in the future. She cleared her throat. "You wouldn't happen to know if the ability is... monitored? As in, the government tracks how and when we use it?" It felt like an absolutely crazy question to ask, but she couldn't help but let it out.

Am I Seeing Things?

𑣲𝓐m I Seeing Things location: Astronomy Class date: Nov. 17th, 2025 word count: 589 words

𝓦hile talking to Verity, Leo could see in her face that she was slowly taking everything in. He imagined it was probably a lot to take in, especially when they were all quite tired and cold in the middle of their Astronomy lesson. He was quite enjoying their chat though. Nodding along to her words, Leo offered a small smile and low hum as he answered. “Mhmm, that’s right.” He always found the animagus ability fascinating. In truth there was many other abilities out there and who knows maybe he would get to meet some more students with one of these other abilities he had learned about recently. It would be fun to learn about the different abilities and even the students that were part other races too.
He chuckled softly and shook his head, staring off in the distance as he thought of home and his family. He’d be home again for winter break in a few short weeks and that also meant he would be seeing all of his family again soon. While he sincerely loved his family, his relationship with his brother was still strained from their fights over the summer. Leo pushed the thought out of his head and forced a small smile onto his face again. “All the comforting went to my older sister I think, they are twins but so different honestly.” With another quick laugh he looked back at the girl and shrugged his shoulders. “I’m closer to my sister out of the two of them.” He admitted, although he wasn’t sure why he was divulging so much personal stuff to the girl he barely knew still. He wished he was closer to his brother but his brother had basically started to turn into their father at this point with everything he had been doing to please him and follow in his footsteps.
As they discussed the family lineage situation Leo wondered himself how they didn’t have any clue where the magical traits came from in her family. It was quite interesting honestly to him. As he started attending the more fancier parties with his parents, he began to interact with these old magic families, families that all traced back for centuries now. The histories of the pure bloodline magic families were something that fascinated him, including his own family tree. “Surely you will be able to find something, and worst case, you will at least maybe learn something new about your lineage even if you don’t find out where the magic came from.” He said with a small smile trying to lighten things up and stay positive for the girl.
Verity’s next question though made him pause for a moment and shake his head. “Animagi would have to basically register with the government but there’s really no way to monitor metamorphmagi ability usage.” It was another interesting question that he had never really thought of before. Truly he needed to sit and befriend more muggles because the conversations would be fascinating.
As they had been lost in conversation for most of practice portion of the lesson, the class was now coming to a close. He was a bit disappointed they couldn’t discuss things further still but maybe they would be able to in the future. And, besides that, Leo also didn’t want to pass up the chance to make a new metamorphmagus friend. “I can always help or answer your questions again any time, if you want I mean.” He smiled nervously at her as he quickly packed up his things.
