Meeting in the Courtyard

It was quite sunny for a day in November, so I put on my coat so I got my bag and put in a book, a notebook and some pens, and walked out to the courtyard, where I found an empty space next to one of the massive stone griffins, and sat down.
I got out my notebook and a pen, and started scribbling down some little doodles, while trying to write down some answers to my History of magic homework, occasionally flicking through my textbook.
After a few minutes, I partially zoned out, and started daydreaming, but I was shocked out of it by a massive crash right next to me.
When I looked round, I saw that a boy had tripped over my bag, which was lying a few steps away from me, and he'd fallen to the floor, almost on top of me.
It looked like quite a painful fall as the floor was made out of solid stone slabs, although there didn't seem to be any blood, so I hoped he was okay.
Awkwardly wincing, I jumped up to me feet, and said quietly, "Oh! I'm so sorry!"
I offered my hand to the boy, to pull him up to his feet.

Meeting in the Courtyard

A sunny day in November is pure luck, especially when you've been studying all week and now you have the opportunity to go outside on such a beautiful sunny day. He put on the first clothes he saw and threw on a coat, then went out into the courtyard.
Once outside, he stopped and took a deep breath. Just what he needed. He didn't look where he was going, he just walked for the sake of walking. He just walked and thought about his own things, completely ignoring what was going on around him. That's probably what led to what happened.
Yehor didn't notice the bag lying in his path, tripped, and fell. "Ouch," he said quietly, grimacing in pain. Fortunately, his hands took the main blow, but it still hurt quite a bit. Why are these stupid stone slabs here? However, before he had time to recover from the fall, someone addressed him. He looked up and saw a girl holding out her hand to him. Without thinking twice, he took her hand and got to his feet, then began to clean his clothes. "Thank you, it's okay, I'm fine. And it's my fault, I should have been watching where I was going." Finally, he made sure his clothes were clean again and looked at the girl. She had brown hair and blue eyes. Perhaps he had seen her before, though he certainly hadn't paid any attention to her. "By the way, I'm Yehor. And you?" He glanced quickly at the things she had with her. "Oh, are you studying here?"

The boy took my hand to pull himself up off the floor, before dusting off his clothes. Fortunately, he said he was fine, which I was glad about, as I didn't want to injure a complete stranger, and have to take him to the hospital wing, which, so far, I'd managed to avoid.
He had lightish brown, sandy hair, and blue eyes, and was just a little bit taller than me, so I assumed he was about my age. Either that, or he was extremely tall, or extremely short for his age, if he was younger or older than me.
When he introduced himself as Yehor, I thought about the people I'd met so far at Hogwarts, and I knew I'd never met him before (not very surprising, considering how shy I was), and that was confirmed by him asking what my name was.
"I'm Mirada. I'm in Ravenclaw - Second year." I said, "And yes, I'm studying - History of Magic. It's my favourite subject. Although most people hate it."
I turned back to the chaos I'd made, and started picking the random books back off the floor, slipping them into my bag, before turning back to him, awkwardly smiling. "What's your favourite subject?"

So, second year, they were in the same year of study. However, it isn't surprising that they had never met before. After all, he had missed an entire academic year, so when Mirada was in her first year, he wasn't at Hogwarts at all.
"Oh, this is also my second year at Hogwarts, although it could have been my third... I missed a year of school due to certain family problems." He paused, suddenly realizing that perhaps he shouldn't be telling all this to someone he had just met. So he quickly changed the subject. "So, you say history of magic? I wouldn't say it's my favorite subject, but I know a lot about the history of magic. My parents are wizards, my whole family are wizards, they told me a lot when I was a kid. It's actually a pretty good subject, even though a lot of people really don't like it and think it's boring." He watched her packing her things. "Favorite subject?" He thought for a moment, but after a few seconds he already knew the answer. "Defense Against the Dark Arts. You know, I want to be an Auror in the future, so I need to know how to protect myself from various threats." He smiled at her in response. But after a moment's hesitation, he continued. "Looks like I interrupted your studies, so maybe we can walk together?" He looked at her questioningly.

When Yehor said that he'd missed a year of the school, he changed the topic extremely quickly to answer my question, so I wondered what the reasons were, although I knew better than to ask such a personal question to someone who was pretty much a stranger.
It was interesting to hear that he came from a fully magical family, and I was glad that there was someone else who liked History of Magic.
When he said that his favourite subject was Defence against the dark arts, I was interested to hear that he wanted to be an auror, as it was a career path that was extremely difficult to reach, but extremely rewarding.
"I'm not sure what I want to be. Possibly a teacher, a broom racer, or maybe an auror as well - it sounds extremely interesting."
When he asked if I wanted to walk with him back inside, I smiled.
"Don't worry. You didn't interrupt my studying - I was daydreaming anyway. Walking together would be good. Where should we go?"
I looked up to the grey sky, where it was starting to rain quite heavily - Scottish weather for you. Most of the other students were hurrying inside, holding their bags over their heads, but I liked the rain, so I tilted my head backwards, while I waited for Yehor to respond.

Listening to her talk about who she wanted to become, he smiled involuntarily. He had decided on his future profession as a child, and now he was doing everything he possibly could to achieve his goal. He had never thought that anyone couldn't know what they wanted to be in the future. But here was a person who didn't know what she would become after graduating from Hogwarts. All of the options sounded interesting. Perhaps she would become a teacher, a broom racer, or even his future coworker? Who knows...
"Wow, so many options! Well, I'm sure you'll decide who you want to become."
He nodded and felt relieved when he heard that he hadn't interrupted her studies. In response to her question, he frowned and looked up at the sky. Well, Hogwarts was big, there were many places to go... but where? He couldn't decide.
"Hmm..." He finally said, looking at Mirada. "You know, there are many places to walk around at Hogwarts. But honestly, I don't know where I'd like to go. And anyway, I don't really care where we go, so we can just walk around the castle corridors."
The weather was getting worse pretty quickly, and that bothered him, he didn't want to get wet. The students around him were rushing inside, and they should too.

Meeting in the Courtyard
When Yehor said he didn't mind where we went, I thought for a few moments, before saying "Maybe we could go into the small hall. There's a big fire in there to stay warm. But, it might be quite crowded. Do you mind about that?"
I thought that the rain was quite relaxing, however Yehor looked quite annoyed about the weather, and was glancing around at the other students running inside, so it would probably be stupid for me to suggest a walk down by the lake, or the edge of the forbidden forest.
After a few minutes of slightly awkward silence, punctuated by the drops of rain sliding down my neck, I put up my hood slightly. "Or, is there anywhere particularly exciting that you've found?" I said, "I'm almost certain that there's a secret room in my dorm, but you couldn't go there, being a Hufflepuff. And being a boy."
I realised that he was the first person that I'd told about my suspicions, and I didn't want anyone else to know, so I said surprisingly quickly "But please don't tell anyone about it."
I thought it would probably be better to change the subject, so then asked "Did you say you came from a fully magical family? That must be so cool! Do you have any siblings?"

Meeting in the Courtyard

"A small hall... sounds good," he thought. He glanced at the sky again, not that he was afraid of rain, but he definitely didn't want to get wet right now. Before he could answer, Mirada said that she might have found a secret room in her dorm. He stared at her in shock. Of course, he had heard various legends about Hogwarts from his family and others, but he had never found anything like a secret room himself, and his eyes lit up with curiosity.
"Yes, a small hall sounds good to me. And no, I haven't found any particularly exciting places... also, don't worry, I won't tell anyone about your discovery. But that sounds very interesting. If you really found a secret room, then that's... wow."
He spoke quietly but quickly, so it was unlikely that anyone except Mirada would hear him. She quickly changed the subject, seemingly unwilling to discuss the secret room she had found.
"Yes, I come from a completely magical family. I have brothers and sisters. To be more precise, I have one younger sister, one older sister, and two older brothers. It's actually cool to have siblings, although sometimes they can be annoying. Very annoying, even." He paused for a few seconds before continuing. "And you I guess don't come from a magical family?"

I was glad to hear that he spoke quietly about the room that I'd found, as I wanted it to stay a secret, at least until I managed to tell my best friend about it.
It was interesting how many sibling he had, and I laughed a little bit when he said how annoying they were.
"Yeah, none of my family had magic. Both of my parents are teachers in a non-magical primary school - the one I used to go to."
I put my bag over my shoulders, making sure it was zipped up properly, as I'd often swung my bag up onto my shoulders, just for everything to fall out onto the floor.
"Do you want to go inside now? It is raining a lot now!"
I walked a few steps backwards towards the fountain, as there was no one in the way now, and I put my hand into it, as I'd always wanted to. As soon as I did, though, I pulled my hand back as quickly as possible, as it was completely freezing. Great. Now I looked like an absolute idiot.
I turned back round towards Yehor.
"I wouldn't advise doing that. It's absolutely freezing."
Maybe it would've been more sensible to do that during the summer, I supposed, but then the courtyard would be so full of people that I probably wouldn't have been able to get anywhere near the fountain.
