During Lunch
One thing that Dee always forgot about Hogwarts was how big this school really was. How easy it was to lose track of people if you weren't ordered into the same room by year, by House, or by sport. You could talk to someone and then not see them for months; not even on purpose, but simply because your paths never crossed unless you made an effort to the contrary. Which Dee hadn't, in this case - at least until today. Originally, right after the wedding, she had meant to. There had been a twinge of guilt sitting in her stomach for not checking on Harlan in the chaos, too occupied by the disastrous consequences of her spell to stop, despite seeing him stumble, face bloody. But when she'd finally managed to breathe again, he'd already disappeared, and then she'd gone to Sweden to forget. She hadn't seen him during the camp in summer either, nor his name on the tent registration lists. So she'd lost track, as one did, until a reminder had come from an unexpected direction a few days ago.
There were a few odd glances directed her way as she walked along the Gryffindor table, eyes skimming the groups of students eating dinner, but they went ignored. Instead, she focused on one Gryffindor in particular. A pleasant smile and a few friendly "Sorry, you don't mind, do you?" inquiries - followed by some shuffling - secured her the seat directly across from Harlan, and she slipped into it as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
"Hey, can you pass me the orange juice?" she asked nonchalantly, gesturing towards the jug that was sitting just off to the side, well within reach if she'd leaned forward a bit. That wasn't the point.
Rather, Dealla tilted her head at him, gaze searching, curious. "I didn't see you during summer camp, or during the broom races in October," she pointed out mildly. "Here I thought you'd come to cheer for our downfall." Her tone was casual, but her eyes stayed focused. "Almost seemed as if you'd forgotten about your promise to catch up to Peri and I. But then a little bird told me you were looking for me the other day." Stalking had been Aly's actual word, but considering how their first encounter had gone, Dee wasn't worried about that part. Mainly, she'd been surprised that he'd asked about her - but who could really understand the inner workings of a teenage boy with a crush? Dee certainly didn't. She smiled at him brightly.
"What can I do for you, Harlan?"

| —— | ![]() how do i ever know? who can i trust? feelings of emptiness. only love could kill me, god bless ━━ summary, this thread is happening on NOVEMBER 7TH, 2025, at LUNCH with @DEALLA PRINCE / wc: 775. It'd been an eventful couple of days for a frazzled lion cub still adjusting himself to his growing mane. Puberty was a weird thing, hormones were even weirder. If asked again, Harlan had absolutely no idea why he'd been obsessive over Dealla Prince, a seventh year who hoodwinked him once while pretending to be Pericles Dralt. Was it weird that he found her deception a little attractive? Surely, it was all in jest and a playful prank that happened last year but someone getting the best of him and in such a manner was quite the surprise to a wizard who prided himself in being a schemer himself. He had to be, it was his destiny to be profound and reputable; his father often said so of this generation of the Montgomery's and expected it from both him and Harlow. So when Aly decided to jab her stupid little wand into his neck, Harlan could only do his best to get himself out of it. He wasn't even lying, but what does a stupid bird brain know about love and obsession? She probably never even had someone who actually liked her. But like with any good heist, Harlan knew when he had come in too hot. He'd decided that he'd wait a bit before trying to approach Dealla, let the seventh year focus on whatever the hell seventh years did. That's what lunch was meant to be, he didn't even try to see if the brunette had been sitting at the Ravenclaw table like he usually did. He sat with a bunch of the other fourth year males and casually ate while talking about silly, little fourth year problems like homework, how they were excited for a weekend trip to Hogsmeade, or how the first years seemed extra small this go around. It was nothing serious until Harlan felt a nudge into his ribcage and a gesture to a certain Ravenclaw student who he wasn't expecting to come barging up to him, sit down directly across of him, and ask for the orange juice. What a brazen move for a Ravenclaw. Harlan would've questioned why she wasn't in Gryffindor if he didn't see how she moved her way through the castle, ambition to the brim and spells at the ready to frazzle a whole Broom Racing team in one flick. His father would be utterly embarrassed if Harlan didn't lean into the proper home training that his parents instilled within him from his adolescence. He would offer her the jug, standing to reach for it while handing it to her in servitude. " Didn't think you were keeping tabs on me. " It'd be remiss of him to not realize that she was, a slight subtle blush flushed through his cheeks at the thought while he took in the moment to look at the witch properly and not through stolen glances or through a figment of his memory as she sauntered off post polyjuice potion. " Um. " Harlan thought back to the wedding, where they did in fact see each other, but he decided not to bring it up. " I mean, the summer was kind of busy. I was in Germany before and then decided instead to just stay. " It was only a lie by a huge omission, but it was this moment that Harlan realized that perhaps a lot of people at the wedding didn't quite realize what happened while he was there and the Athanatos' would've been clean about covering it all up. " Finn convinced me to join Quidditch. Besides, you and Pericles were quite persistent in the fact that I might never catch up. " He didn't believe he couldn't, but Harlan didn't believe the Gryffindor Broom Racing team had a chance, especially while both of them remained on the Ravenclaw team. What a little rat Aly was. With an eye roll, Harlan huffed before trying to control his emotions knowing that Dealla was close with the evil girl. " Yeah, your friend was not very nice to me. " His hand subconsciously went to his neck as he gingerly pressed where her wand tip was used to threaten him. " I.. " Stammering a bit, Harlan didn't really know how to share what his actual thought process was and what would happen when he was directly faced with Dealla. " I wanted to ask you something but, " his eyes looked around at the Gryffindor table, annoyed that they were garnering so much attention. " Can I ask you outside? You know. " He gestured around them, and Harlan wasn't trying to admit that he was worried that his mind had an intruder inside still waiting for an opportune moment to take over. | —— |

Apparently Harlan had been raised with better manners than Dee, because he leapt into action at once, even getting up from his seat to reach the orange juice and offer it to her. Lips quirking into a smile, she filled her cup while he sat back down, and added yet another opportunity to tease him to her ever-lengthening list. She set the jug down on the table with a shrug. "I guess I did? After you declared to my face that you were going to devise some sort of devious prank for me, I figured I should watch my back." Not the reason she'd been looking out for him at all, but far easier to say out loud. Dee was a master in the art of dancing around uncomfortable topics. She raised an eyebrow. "Still waiting on that one, too, by the way."
She lowered her eyes for just a moment, staring at the empty plate in front of her, while she added, "And after the wedding, I thought I should check in on you." Dee had taken the events mostly in stride, which was perhaps worrying in itself, but most students didn't seem to have her vast experience with traumatising events, unexpected attacks and dark magic these days. Most of the younger kids should probably have been sent to talk to a counsellor after that day. (Most of the older kids, too.)
But either she had overestimated the need for this, or Harlan liked to do some dancing of his own, because in the vague explanation about his whereabouts during the summer, the wedding didn't make an appearance. "Bodensee?" Dee asked with the flash of a grin, thinking back to their first conversation and the rambling triggered by Peri's presence. "You missed a fun camp, though. I could have won a teddy bear for you at the fairground games." She raised a knowing eyebrow. "Or even tricked a certain someone into taking the Amortunnel ride with you."
She did find herself vaguely disappointed by the reason for his absence at the races. Despite herself, she'd been impressed with the apparent determination Harlan had showed to face Peri and her on eye level last summer. It hadn't lasted, it seemed. "Finn," she repeated, pulling a face, "needs to mind his own business." She sniffed slightly. "Abandoning racing for Quidditch makes me question whether you were as smart as I thought." She drummed her fingers on the table thoughtfully, wondering whether Peri had said anything more to him. It seemed unlikely, Peri was usually the more nurturing one between them. "In Quidditch it's just gonna be Aly kicking your ass instead of Peri and I."
But apparently Harlan already had some experience in that, and Dee's fingers stilled at the huff and the eye roll, amusement spilling across her features, settling as an impish glint in her eyes. "This is refreshing," she announced, her eyebrows rising as Harlan's hand rubbed against his neck, as if recalling something vaguely threatening. What had Aly done to the kid? "Usually people think Aly is the nice, sane one." Not without reason if she was honest.
The amusement didn't quite disappear but she sobered up slightly when Harlan seemed reluctant to ask his mysterious question among his fellow students, not few of which were likely attempting to listen in on the conversation. Intriguing. Nodding, she grabbed a bread roll off the table to compensate for the lunch she was about to miss, then got to her feet. "Right. Let's go, then."

He probably shouldn’t have felt as pleased with himself as he did when Dealla announced (to practically the whole Gryffindor Table) that she was actively keeping tabs on him. The semantics of the why didn’t matter in this moment while Dee felt the need to give an eye out for what he had been cooking up. There was nothing he had actively planned, but this was a great reminder that he owed her something worthwhile before she graduated from Hogwarts. “ How very Ravenclaw of you to watch out. ” If he was trying to rub salt, he’d mention how it was also very Slytherin but Harlan’s goal wasn’t to piss off the witch but enjoy some actual time with her before she’d disappear back into her perch with the rest of the murder of crows. “ Don’t worry, it’s coming when you least expect it. ” Finishing off his last word with a slight smile and a chuckle, he’d really need to figure out what was an appropriate revenge prank for her pretending to be Pericles Dralt. Maybe Harlan would pretend to be Pericles? He’d have to put some thought in it when he wasn’t so preoccupied trying to figure out if he was still under possession. Speaking of the wedding, Harlan flinched at the word as his gaze met back up with Dee’s’ as she moved so casually past the wound. Maybe she didn’t know what had actually happened, which only meant that the Athanatos’ were as dangerous as his father had said that they were. Elite, Pure-Blooded, and filled with enough ambition to drown the snake pit. “ Yeah, the Bodensee. It’s my sister’s last year before she graduates so we thought it might be good to spend one last Summer together with our grandparents. ” It was easy enough to stack a lie on another lie when he didn’t care if the house of cards was stable. The holes in the story would’ve caused anyone else confusion, but it didn’t matter much to Harlan, not right now at least. “ Your friend’s an elusive creature, hard to pin down. I think he’s more exciting as someone to aspire to be like than anything else. ” Time gave perspective and Pericles (as incredible as he is) just felt like he had far better things to be doing than paying attention to some measly fourth year. With an abrupt burst of laughter, Harlan shook his head at the jab and decided to stand from the table as Dealla slung insult to injury to Finn. Merlin did he miss the dude, a solemn moment as he realized that his roommate last year didn't return turn back to Hogwarts this year. They would've destroyed Quidditch this year if they were partnered together. " She's diabolical, I think the Ravenclaw Tower must be higher than ours cause the lot of you don't have enough oxygen or something. Makes you all do some questionable things. That's the only viable solution to how you all act. " His steps were casual enough and met pace with Dealla as he turned the corner of the Gryffindor Table and kept pace with the witch until they could make it outside for them to talk a little more candidly. " Winnie is your friend, right? " He asked knowing the answer but he wasn't certain on all of the relationship dynamics that happened at the Wedding. " I mean, yeah, she is, but. " It was clear that Harlan wasn't sure how to move forward with what he was about to say, biting his bottom lip as he kept looking to ensure that they were alone outside of the Hall. In a quieter tone, Harlan moved a little closer to Dealla and decided to just go for it. " What do you know of the Athanatos family? I don't know how to explain this, but during the wedding, I was possessed by magic I haven't come across before. Magic that had willed me to do something that could've sent me to Azkaban. " | —— |

"Mmmmhm." Dee drew out the humming sound, accepting the comment equanimously as she helped herself to some pasta. A girl needed to eat, after all. She supposed her statement, as much as it had been an excuse, would make her very Ravenclaw, and she wondered when that had happened. Had she grown to fit her House, or had this always been her? She'd accepted that the Sorting Hat may have had a point years ago. "Some would just call it paranoid, but I guess I can blame that on this school." This school, and all the things she'd gone through during her time here. An overly ambitious Gryffindor was really the least of her worries. Stabbing her fork into the pasta, she grinned at Harlan's renewed promise. "Make it worth my while, then."
They were both dancing around the real topic, though. The flinch when she mentioned the wedding didn't go unnoticed, but also made her hesitate to dig further into the issue right away. It was a sore spot, one that she wasn't to keen on pressing in public. The rest of his summer seemed the safer topic. "You have a sister?" she asked, surprised. If this was her last year at the school, she must be Dee's age, which meant that Dee probably knew her, too, at least in passing. But it was a valid explanation for his absence in summer, and her teasing was shrugged off with an ease that was telling. "Hmm." Dee took a sip of the orange juice, sounding slightly disappointed. So Harlan was past his crush on Peri - or at least, he claimed to be. How boring. Oh, well.
Dee led them to the doors of the Great Hall, then let Harlan decide where to go next, listening with a faint smile to his complaints. Mock-outrage spread on her features when Harlan's insults expanded from just Aly - which had been funny, and Dee would take great pleasure in recounting them to her best mate later - to include her, too. "Hey!" she protested, blowing up her cheeks for a pout. "What have I ever done to you... actually, nevermind. Don't answer that." Despite their limited interaction so far, she had probably amassed quite a list of transgressions where Harlan was concerned.
They didn't go far, turning to the side right outside the Great Hall, just enough off the main doors to get a modicum of privacy. "Yeah," she confirmed what was likely a rhetorical question. Friend seemed like such a weak description of what Winnie was, but she didn't have a better one, so it would do. Confused, she gave him a questioning look. Was this about the wedding? Despite reconfirming the statement himself, Harlan trailed off, uncertain. A moment passed in silence, and Dee frowned, scrutinising his expression, the nervous shifting, the doubt on his face. It carried on long enough that she was tempted to prod for more information when Harlan finally took a step closer and started speaking again.
The first question was returned with a shrug. She didn't know much - they were powerful, influential, sketchy as fuck; Vladimir had a tendency to return from the dead, Papa Athanatos was in deep with some bad shit. Gideon was possibly evil personified, and Matt was only slightly better. She was about to say as much, but Harlan just kept going; spilling the words like they'd been stuck in his throat for the past four months. (Maybe they had.)
"What?" The word came out too loud, echoing into the entrance hall and bouncing up the main stairwell. She winced at her own voice, but couldn't contain the shock bursting inside of her, sharp and cold. "What do you mean, possessed?" she hissed, reaching out to grip Harlan's forearm in a tight hold, fingers digging in. "How? When?" The words were tight, urgent, panic taking root in her chest, edged and visceral, trauma coming back to call. Her other hand came up to Harlan's jaw, forcing him to meet her eyes. "Is it gone?"

The ebb and flow of wit and conversation between Harlan and Dee was the very reason the Gryffindor felt slightly enamored by the whole experience. The older students had all been so clever, competent, and truly witches and wizards that Harlan wanted to model himself after. “ Good, stay prepared. ” Now, Harlan hadn’t concocted his plan to its fullest quite yet but when he had the energy and time to focus on that, it would be spectacular. He couldn’t wait too much longer with Dee graduating next semester — there wasn’t much time left with this group of Seventh Years, which meant that some of the notorious Quidditch menaces would be graduating and teams like Gryffindor might actually have a chance to win. At the mention of Dee’s surprise to Harlan having an older sister, he nodded and provided a slight shrug. “ Harlow is my sister. You may know her, maybe not though. She’s, uhh, feisty. ” That was the best way to explain his sister’s ferocity to the Ravenclaw, probably the reason Harlan felt so comfortable to allow his own courage and braveness to grow and swell as it did within him. He wouldn’t bore the witch with the predicaments of his family and the incessant push for greatness from their lackluster pushing paper minion goon of a father. It was quick and painless to find a bit of privacy, Harlan was thankful Dee had been willing to talk with him and had found him so that he didn’t need to go through the trouble. It was a lot trickier when Dealla had friends like Aly who basically assaulted him both verbally and physically for the sake of a friend. He could only hope he would have the privilege to blatch her when Gryffindor would play Ravenclaw on the Quidditch Pitch. With a stifled laugh, it was funny to see the other backpeddle so intensely once she might’ve realized the amount of shenanigans the Ravenclaw Seventh Years seemed to drum up. If it had just been Dee it was one thing but add in Aly and Pericles Dralt and Harlan had seen enough hoodwinks to last him the remainder of his time at Hogwarts. He would allow her to stew in that for a while, perhaps finding more sympathy for the young Gryffindor for all that he’s had to ensure so far. The realization on Dealla's face as he shared his current reality had him with his own epiphany that it seemed like something like this had happened before and Harlan should be far more anxious about it than he had been so far. It was a though she had seen a ghost herself. " Ow. " Jutting back into reality with Dealla's fingertips gripping onto his arm while her other hand turned his face so that they were making intense eye contact, in another world Harlan might've enjoyed being this close to the witch. " Dee, you're hurting me... " She probably didn't realize it but she was also freaking him out. He tried to pull away enough to gain his autonomy again and let out a huffed breath with an attempt to retell what happened to him at the Wedding as succinctly as possible without making eye contact with the girl. " I went to the Library alone and this piano monster-hybrid man appeared summoning what looked like three Veela women who spoke in a language I didn't understand. It was only for a moment, but instantly I was trapped in my own mind with the thought to get rid of Mr. Aathanatos. " His fingers and voice began to tremble as he took a step back, clenched his fist and cleared his throat to keep the fear at bay. " I casted a few times against him too, until I managed to snap out of it. " His free hand gripping onto his wrist as he exhaled sharply and returned his gaze back to her. " I don't know if it's still in me or not. I can't even find what kind of spell it was. I've been trying to look for it. " He'd keep Professor Lécuyer out of it for now, but there were a few more people he wanted to question. Watching how Dee had taken it made him more concerned, but as though perhaps it wasn't such a wild incident to share. " Does this kind of shit happen here often or something? You don't seem like what i'm saying i'm insane... " | —— |

Panicked urgency had Dee's fingers digging into Harlan's arm without her realising while she stared into his eyes, desperate to confirm that whatever had possessed him at the wedding was truly gone. Impossible, of course; she hadn't seen it in her own boyfriend for almost a year, how could she be sure about Harlan?
It took a few seconds longer for his words to reach her, to fight through the odd haze brought on by her fear. You're hurting me. Dee flinched, snatching her hands back when Harlan tried to pull away. She was breathing too quickly. "Sorry," she whispered and closed her eyes, bringing her hands up to cover her face for a moment. Exhaled, slowly, trying to steady her thoughts. Logic would help, panic would not.
Thankfully, Harlan's words gave her something to focus on, to center her spinning thoughts - even if those words were confusing more than helpful. She let her hands sink with only a slight tremor, and raised both eyebrows. Piano monster hybrid man? Veelas? All that had been going on while she'd been what, talking to Aly and grabbing drinks? She absorbed the information quietly, trying to sort through what Harlan said, trying to match it with other curses she'd seen. Her heartbeat steadied.
After a full, deep breath, she finally looked at Harlan properly. He was shaking, voice unsteady, and Dee could feel tendrils of guilt weaving into her gut. She hadn't noticed any of this was going on at the wedding, and her reaction just now had probably made things... worse. "Hey," she said quietly, worry furrowing her brows. Harlan had taken a step back but she followed, reaching for his wrist again. This time her touch was soft, reassuring. "You're okay. We'll figure it out." Empty promises, considering she didn't really know what it was.
She shrugged, looking away when Harlan questioned whether things like this were a regular occurrence. "Not... exactly, I don't think." It didn't seem to match up. She'd expected hags, not Veelas. There was no aggression, no personality changes, as far as she could tell. Her eyes flitted back up to meet his. "You're not insane." The statement was matter-of-fact. She hadn't doubted his words for a second. "Have you had any... memory gaps since then? Problems with your temper? Feeling any different?" she questioned. Those had been Jack's symptoms. If he didn't have them, did that mean he was fine now? Another thought occurred to her. "Been feeling tired, or constantly exhausted? Like you're too tired to stay awake, but sleeping doesn't help?" That's how she'd felt, after her blood had been used in that hag ritual. All the terrifying curses she'd seen over the years, but she felt like she barely knew anything.
Chewing on her lip, Dee tried to think. "Do you remember anything else about what happened? About the Veelas, or the... piano monster hybrid?" Those seemed like the best place to start.

If this was the price of potent magicks, Harlan wasn’t sure it was worth the cost. What Hogwarts had been teaching them until now felt pedestrian — a modicum of power from what had actually been out there and waiting for wixen ambitious enough to reach out and claim it. Is this what the students in Slytherin felt when it came to magicks? It was more the curiosity that clawed at recesses of Harlan’s mind in a yearning to understand the mechanisms of what had happened in his psyche. Dealla Price had always been terrifying, but the reality of her clasping his chin as though she would beckon the possessive spirit out of his body through her own indomitable magic had the Gryffindor thoroughly rattled. “ I-it’s fine, Dee. ” The words rattled in his mouth before awkwardly falling out of his mouth like he was a first year again being berated by his classmates for thinking he could shatter the caste system that existed for centuries within the Wizarding World. Harlan was not a chain breaker then, and it seemed as though he wasn't now either. The reality of Harlan finally sharing all of this with someone had been overwhelming and shook the teenager to the core. He hadn't meant me, promise, but it didn't stop the tears from welling at the corner of his eyes as the Gryffindor looked at Dealla once more with a shattered hope and simply collapsed himself onto the floor as he began to sob uncontrollably. It had all began to gusher out, an ugly guttural sob as he kept his face within the corner of his hands and looked down at the cobblestone floor. It had felt nice to let it all out, but also like his entire world had been crumbling and this was for Harlan to finally come to terms with. " Dee, I don't know. I don't know, Dee. I don't know. " The words forced their way out through the moments where the tears and the heavy breathing weren't taking precedent with the slight rocking back and forth to self soothe. It was all so overwhelming for a wizard who had barely made it into his fourth year and pretended to have it altogether. It was all an act, a giant facade for a boy who was shook to his core that he now had a permanent resident in his mind waiting for his most vulnerable to take over. How could he fight an enemy that had no physical form? How does one fight a ghost? Harlan leaned into the panic, letting himself feel all of his emotions and finally break down like he had wanted to do for months. It was messy and it was ugly but it was real. After a couple of minutes of inconsolable sobbing, the boy switched to deep breaths trying to self-soothe a little while trying to muster up enough words to answer Dealla's questions. " I'm tired. I'm angry. I'm grouchy. I'm all of it. " But was that cause or effect? Harlan had no idea how to tell from where he stood. The tears had stopped but every so often, Harlan had to gulp for air as his body heaved in the after-effects of a haunting cry. " I just know they were in the Library and then they were gone. I went to Mr. Aathanatos and was forced out of wanting to kill him. " Looking pathetically up at Dealla, he was more relieved than embarrassed that he looked like a fucking idiot in front of someone that he idolized. Maybe it'd be nice to let someone shoulder the burden for a little bit, after all, even people like Harlan needed to rest too. | —— |

Dee kept forgetting that not everyone at this school was as jaded as she was. That not everyone reacted to life-threatening, mind-crushing events with a deep sigh that said not again and an wide arsenal of spells on their tongue. It was a good instinct to have in the heat of disaster, less so in situations like this, ones that required emotional intuition over cutting wit. She was too intense for this, too focused on solving the problem instead of taking care of those caught up in its wake. Logic might have helped her focus, but it was clearly not the best way to approach Harlan in his current state. When the Gryffindor broke down, just steps outside of the Great Hall, Dee found herself at a loss.
"Shit," she muttered after a moment of hesitation, before gingerly kneeling down next to him, robes pooling around them, a sea of black. Wishing they'd moved just a bit further, maybe around another corner, she gave any gawkers nearby a glare that would send them scrambling, then paused once again, lips pressed into tight lines, tense and uncomfortable. Harlan was rocking himself back and forth, shaken by sobs. It was a pitiful sight, heartbreaking, even, and Dee's shoulders slumped. She exhaled softly, rubbing a hand across her face. Her fingers twitched slightly before she reached out, curling her fingers around the nape of his neck; not to stop his movements but to remind him of her presence, maybe give him an anchor to ground himself with.
"Hey," she said, voice quiet but determined. "Harlan? Harlan, look at me." The words were lined with a subtle edge of command. Intense was what she was good at, after all. If he listened, she'd meet his eyes, hold them, gaze steady, even if she felt anything but. "Tired and angry is okay. Natural, even, after what happened to you." At least she imagined it was, but that was probably less certainty than he needed right now. Half-truths were the strategy of choice, at least until he'd calmed down. There was really nothing else she could do in his current state. "It doesn't sound like anything I've seen or heard of before." Certainly not like what had happened to her, or to Jack. "I don't... I don't think you're possessed or anything, not anymore. I don't know what was going on there. But we'll figure it out, yeah?" In part to help Harlan, in part to find out what the hell was going on. If it would give more insight into the Athanatos family and what Winnie had unwittingly been dragged into, Dee had to know.
