2025/26 Stage 1 Hufflepuff vs Ravenclaw: Match 7

There was a part of her that could convince herself that the rest of this was for play until Alina saw Nicholas hit the ground and not get up. She knew what kind of game they were playing...but still.

She glanced wildly between her teammates and the fallen Ravenclaw as if to say "what do we do?" or "how can we help". Will he be okay? It was the first time that magic really showed her how deadly and painful it can be. For a muggleborn, it's scary. There was some part of her that would do everything that she could to keep herself and her teammates safe for the rest of the duel, even if it isn't much. The thought of Minnie or Costanza falling caught her anxiety in a bad way. And logically she knew he would be okay, that was the point of doing this for sport. It was supervised, structured, protected, but logic doesn't counter emotions as much as she wishes it did.

It was like a smoke bomb went off as her vision was obscured by fog that brought her attention back to her own situation. That last dodge had been stupid, the Ravenclaws had just managed to counter it completely. Alina didn't even know how it was possible. Always something new. She didn't know what to do. They had a good lead, but now Minnie was left in danger.

"Oh...great ..." was the last thing she'd heard Nicholas say. A bright eyed first year had been brought down by her cynicism and another bloody set of crackers. Fluttering her eyes closed for a moment as she bit her lip, she felt bad she couldn't have protected him somehow. Regardless, she knew she'd stop by the Hospital Wing to check on him later.

But the lightning crack brought her back to the moment as it struck Costanza—and that was not the only thing. Aislin had send at Curse of the Bogies at her as well, washing her in a wave of sickness. In those precious few seconds, Maisie tried to think of something to compliment Aislin's casting. And there was always one thing that came to mind, but this time she'd been studying a special version of it.

Quickly, she looked over to Aislin with a whisper, "Do you think...?"

She didn't dare finish the thought lest the Hufflepuffs caught wind of it. But one thing was extremely clear: there was nothing left to lose. So, she grit her teeth and aimed with nothing but a wish and a prayer.

And yet...

In those few seconds, the fog began to swirl up from the ground, wrapping itself around the ankles of two of the Hufflepuff girls and up and up and up until it filled the space around them like a cool autumn day. It was dense and deep and deliberate unlike the black ash that had saved her before. She'd somehow pulled off a fourth year spell. Her brown eyes turned up towards the stands, where Robin and Percy sat, to see if anyone had seen it before returning her glance to the piste.

She took a breath: a city girl saved by natural causes once again.

Minnie couldn't do anything but watch what happened, silenced. She noticed one of their opponents got knocked out, a plus. And she wasn't hit, another plus. Unfortunately, the rest of her teammates were less lucky. Without her help things were starting to spiral out of control. She needed to be able to get back in the game, and fast.

Aislin felt quite proud of her curse for all of a few seconds. It was a good move and a fairly hard spell, at least in her opinion, and if sneezing had been so distracting for her then the throes of magical illness should be distracting for Costanza. But then Nicholas fell, stunned by another one of those crackers that went everywhere, and she didn't like watching him go down, right next to her, kind of concerningly still after all his nervous energy. This was just how magical sports went, she couldn't be shocked.

She glanced over at Maisie during the pause, looking for some cue of how to react, and found the concern she should have expected. But she also found some kind of look in Maisie's eyes that rekindled her energy, her own eyes widening at the whispered question, piecing together what her teammate meant. She nodded quickly. Maisie was already in motion when they were called to resume, weaving a spell far beyond her year to produce a fog that was mesmerizing in the same way her storm cloud had been, transforming the practical, simple stage into something far more atmospheric. Costanza and Alina were plunged into obscurity, but not before the snap of her lightning making its return. And even if none of this made up for losing a teammate (she'd done that math, it didn't), it was a good-looking longshot.

The presence of a thick Nebulus fog didn’t stop the Hufflepuffs from throwing fire across the piste. A jet of orange flames pierced through the darkness and hurtled straight towards Aislin, but the eagle had her eyes on the fog. She was just quick enough to avoid Alina’s fire, but she walked straight into Minnie’s green inferno, causing the back of her robes to catch fire. Costanza didn’t go for the damage-dealing flames. Instead, if one looked closely at the fog around Alina, they could make out the appearance and fading of a soft glow - a healing spell.

Trying for her own fire, Maisie turned her wand towards Alina once again. The Ravenclaws were intent on taking that badger down. However, Alina did not find herself set on fire. Alas, there was no fire at all coming from Maisie’s wand as she failed to cast. But Aislin was so sharp that not even the fog could hinder her. She sent a Knockback Jinx flying across the piste, striking Alina right in the middle of her torso, sending the witch skating back a couple of steps. Pyxis looked up, wondering if the cloud would have more to say after its recent showing, but all it did was rumble discontentedly.

Alina grunted as she was hit with another knockback jinx. She thought the fog was enough to throw off the others, but the aim had been wicked precise. She could only thank her luck that she wasn't also nailed with fire. I'm glad they didn't target, Minnie Alina thought. But I am really tired of being target practice.

Minnie grinned in satisfaction as she set her target ablaze. She turned to Alina to high five her, only to realize she had been hit with another knockback jink. "Oof. Don't worry Alina, we'll hit those ravens back." She turned her focus back on her adversaries, ready to crush them.

For Maisie Gemmell, good things did not last. There had been some surprisingly great moments—a disarm and a fourth year spell—but those could not stop her wand from failing her. It was as though it knew, very well, what she knew: she was terrible at this.

And as she turned and saw Aislin on fire, she could see it all going down until that moment she'd be up here—alone—again. So, despite her starting words, she gently asked the first year, "Do you want me to take you to the hospital wing?" And even as she said it, she regretted it for she never wanted to go to the hospital wing and doubted anyone else did either.

But she liked Aislin, and she didn't like seeing her in pain.

And truth be told, she was dreading being alone again.

COSTANZA JEWELWEED
october 18th, 2025
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
With no eyes on anything and her senses rapidly deteriorating, Costanza didn't attempt to fire through the fog. She knew it was unlikely that she hit any of the birds and even if she did, it wouldn't pack the punch she normally had. Her mounting nausea would make sure of that. She couldn't see the two crosshairs on Alina, but she knew her teammate hadn't been completely healthy since a few rounds ago, so Costanza raised her wand upwards and sent a healing spell Alina's way, hoping too offset some of the hell she might be facing.

The fog was a good move, but it was also a complicating move. Aislin could only see Minnie clearly, squinting futilely at the other two Hufflepuffs. At Alina, mostly, who had proven very slippery but maybe, maybe would let her guard down now, thinking herself safely obscured. And in many ways she was, hard for Aislin to pinpoint, but if she could get this right, Alina wouldn't see it coming.

She put all her eggs in one metaphorical basket, focusing hard to line up her jinx perfectly with the vaguer visual and clearer audial cues to Alina's position. But holding that focus so long wasn't a good thing, not when there was suddenly what looked like a wall of fire rushing at her, two separate casts of it. Aislin started moving too late. Messily stumbling away from one spell left her tripping back into the second, worse bout of flames, and she instinctively bit down on her tongue as the fire caught. It hurt, and nailing Alina didn't seem worth it at all in that moment.

Maisie, who was a virtuously attentive older teammate, was saying something. Do you want me to take you to the hospital wing? It took Aislin a second to realize she must look as bad as Nicholas had, before he went down, and another second to shake her head. She hadn't thought about it before, what it would take for her to give up, but... she was sure her nan had never forfeited, so neither would she.
