The Great hall, sorting ceremony.
____________________§_____________________
The great hall is filled to the brim with students and professors alike, there's floating candles, excited kids talking and running around to find their tables, professors greeting each other and others hoping everyone finally quiets down quickly.
The first year students are standing outside the hall, some very excited- others nervous and probably pale from realizing they have to walk by themselves to the front once they're called.
Azrael is standing near the middle with Jada, his umbrella still open and clutched in his hand- not to protect himself from pouring rain or the sun....most likely because he doesn't like feeling hot, and even when the castle is at a perfect temperature- it's just not cold enough for him...and when you have an umbrella that expels cold air? You're obviously gonna use it every chance you get...
Is he gonna walk to the sorting hat with that? Probably, is anyone gonna stop him? Maybe a professor...a student? Not really, not when they are shifting away from him- Him and Jada are basically alone in the middle of the hall, everyone else has left a gap for them...not in a friendly way either, mostly out of feeling unsettled by Azrael and assuming Jada is in on his eeriness too since she's standing with him- still, no one's saying anything about it.
Azrael's owl liked eyes slowly narrowed as he peeked inside the hall when the first student was called for the sorting ceremony- but he moved back when he realized just how bright the inside was...his mother had a habit of having low candles around their home, not for ambience but because they never saw the need for bright lights...they basically lived like it was nighttime 24/7, which... obviously proved to be a bad idea now that Azrael's eyes are pretty sensitive to the sun- sure, he went out from time to time and had to face light, but it was usually at night so it wasn't that bad..
Still, he'll have to get used to it.
"...If you want, you can stand with the others."
Azrael suddenly spoke up, voice calm and void of pretty much anything as he turned to look at Jada...even if you physically can't tell because of his blank expression, by what he said one can assume he feels guilty for dragging Jada into being avoided like the plague because of his looks and demeanor- he's used to this treatment, but he'd hate to drag someone who's not used to it into it.

"The Sun's shadow knows no fear, no dawn. Is the watcher always watched, or simply drawn?" -About Azrael

Jada stepped into the Great Hall. The candles, seeming to float in mid air, cast a welcoming glow that seemed to envelope everything in sight. There were four long tables, each with hundreds of students seated at them, with different colours.
They must be the house colours. she thought.
Her mouth was hanging slightly open as her gaze made its way to the ceiling. It was unlike anything she’d seen before. Like a huge tapestry that mirrored the sky outside. It was covered in vast dark clouds, no longer raining but threatening to start again.
She stood side by side with Azrael, the crowd seemed to be avoiding them. Perhaps it was because of their peculiarity. They had lost Meave in the crowd when exiting the train but Jada spotted her at the sea of people. She seemed to be avoiding them.
Oh well. Not everyone is meant to stay
One of the elder professors began reading students names off a long piece of parchment.
She watched as the girl nervously made her way to the stool placed in the center of the “stage”, just above a couple of steps. Jade wondered what it would feel like, to have everyone’s eyes on you as you walked up. The girl sat on the stool and an old patchy hat was set upon her head. A hat that had sorted thousands of students before them and would, thousands after them. How does it do that Jade knew the hat did the sorting but, how?
The hat moved. Her eyes widened as she watched the hat open… it’s mouth? It called out Gryffindor! and the girl quickly hurried off towards the table decorated in reds and gold.
She wondered what house she’d be in.
She was slightly surprised by Azrael’s question. No! I don’t mind it, besides they should be more respectful anyways. she huffed. Yes, they weren’t all that normal but they didn’t have to make it so obvious. What are you all looking at? she asked a couple kids, staring.
She listed on as names continued and the crowd in front of her started to thin out. Why must her last name begin with a B?

Azrael was even more unlucky, his last name started with an H! So surely this was all going to take a while, especially with how slow it was going already...still, no need to get antsy just yet.
there was something peculiar he had noticed, whenever a Slytherin was chosen- the Gryffindors would quickly start booing, same when a Gryffindor was chosen, the Slytherins would do the same thing...were the two tables rivals of some kind? They didn't seem to get along all that well.
Azrael had never minded which house he'd end up in, he still doesn't- his parents never had a preference for where he'd end up either, as both of them were in different houses...his mother had been a Ravenclaw and his father a Slytherin.
Now that he thinks of it, his father never told him any stories of what being a Slytherin was like... especially nothing about a sudden rivalry with Gryffindor, still...even if he did end up in Gryffindor, his father would most likely not care- after all, like his father said, "you're there to learn new things, not sulk over house colors.".
Azrael turned to look at Jada as it got close to her last name- she'll be called in a minute or two, Azrael would have to wait a while longer...still, hopefully they end up on the same house, he'd hate to have to do the whole "socializing" thing again...he did it once, no way in hell is he doing it ever again.
he'd have to put his umbrella away soon... he'd hate to have to walk all the way to the front without it, especially with all the light around- it was basically torture for him! Still, nothing he could do... really, he should start going out more, it's starting to get annoying to have to squint and close your eyes every time someone turns on a light- regardless if it's dim or not.
"... You're up soon, Jada."
He spoke up suddenly, voice monotone like always- he didn't seem excited or nervous, so it was hard to tell what he was feeling...still, he didn't seem to mind having to wait a while longer for his turn.

Yea, she sighed, unfortunatly.
As the students prior to her got sorted, she noticed that the red and green tables seemed to boo each other when a student got sorted into the other house and cheer twice as loud when they got sorted into theirs.
The sorting hat had sung a song before they had begun the sorting, it had described each of the four houses and their qualities. She hoped to get sorted into Ravenclaw, the navy blue house. Wisdom seemed like a desirable quality, but ambition, from Slytherin, didn’t seem all to bad either. Of course there was nothing wrong with either of the other two houses, it was just that they seemed a bit… boring?
Her hands balled up at her sides when the teacher finished off with the last students in the a’s.
Jada Blake
She took a shaky breath and stepped forwards. She could feel the eyes of the others, sorted and waiting, on her back as she made her way up the steps. Her legs seemed to be especially heavy and her steps exceptionally slow. It was as if time had slowed down and, not in a good way.
What if I don’t like the house I’m sorted into? What if I’m not in the same house as Azrael? What if we get sorted into rival houses? Will we still be friends?
Her head was spinning and her vision slightly blurring. She sat. The stool was made of solid, unforgiving wood and was mildly uncomfortable to sit on. How many students have sat in my exact position before? The hat was placed on her head. It was so large it covered most of her face.
What do we have here…? the hat asked rhetorically, Hmmm, hardworking but stubborn, not exceptionally brave but always, always kind… You have great ambitions I see, you strive to be noticed and remembered for something. But, what? Jada fidgeted with her hands, it wasn’t all very nice, but it was true. Well well, I think….
SLYTHERIN
She smiled. She didn’t know whether that was a good thing or not but all the excitement and nerves brought her to. She stood up quickly and hurried off to their table, eager to be out of the attention of the others. She really did hope that Azrael would join her.
A few people smiled at her and welcomed her to Slytherin as she sat down but, soon enough, their attention was turned back towards the next person being sorted

As Jada was sorted into Slytherin, Azrael couldn't help but stare at her table... would he be sorted into Slytherin too? Or somewhere else? Not that he cared, but still... At least if he were in Slytherin he wouldn't have to worry about potential house rivalry- especially something like Gryffindor against Slytherin.
It was gonna be a VERY long wait until he was finally called...or at least that's what it seemed like, some kids would purposely take their sweet time walking to the sorting hat to milk the attention they were getting from all 4 tables- really, if you have a thing for attention then this walk is surely something you'd enjoy...not so much If you get anxious easily though.
It seemed like forever as kids continued to get called to the front, each one sorted somewhere different- and suddenly, he was called.
"Azrael Holloway!"
Time had passed by quicker than he had expected, people were staring now...who wouldn't? Especially when the kid who's gonna walk to the front is holding a gothic styled umbrella indoors-
He had to close it, and he decided to leave it outside by the door- leaning against the wall where no one would accidentally trip on it- it was enchanted to only respond to Azrael, so if anyone were to take it? It probably wouldn't even open at all, or even stay for more than a few seconds before Rushing back to where it was initially left...still, a few kids seemed eager to snatch it.
He didn't think much of it, not when he knew they were simply doing it to mess with him- possibly prove that he was really as weird as he looked- in their minds, who would ever bring an umbrella indoors? Apparently only someone as eerie as him, which was apparently some sort of invisible invitation for them to mess with it.
As Azrael walked inside, the candles and lights practically almost blinded him- his pupils contracted almost immediately, as if you had placed the sun itself directly in front of him, his eyes widened further- as if trying to blink the light away, was he really not used to light? It seemed like it, especially when he had to squint to not trip on his way to the front...you can't exactly see all that well if your eyes sting, of course.
Soon enough (and after a few snickers coming from the tables, they seemed to have realized Azrael's issue with the light), Azrael made it to the front and sat down on the uncomfortable and old wooden chair- pupils tiny as he tried to not squint too much...he already looked like someone was shining a flashlight on his eyes, he didn't need them to get watery to top it all off.
"hmmm... you're quite the peculiar one, aren't you?"
The hat spoke as soon as it was placed on Azrael's head- Azrael barely registered what it was saying, still more concentrated on trying to look like he wasn't actually struggling to keep his eyes open.
"... you're calm but not cold, quiet but not shy, observant but not judgmental."
The hat seemed to take a pause, as if thinking for a while...
"...you are brave I can tell, not afraid of what others think, loyal to those you care about... you'd fit right into-"
"GRYFFINDOR!!!"
The hat shouting his house made him snap out of his daze, he turned to look at his table- where the Gryffindors were clapping...but clearly not happy to be stuck with the weird kid and his umbrella- hell, the Slytherins didn't boo this time, some even snorting mockingly at the Gryffindors- as if happy they were stuck with Azrael...not that he cared, the same thing happened to both of his parents back when they were still students at Hogwarts, so- it wasn't like he was upset he wasn't being welcomed with open arms.
He stood up as the hat was taken off his head, making his way over to the Gryffindor table...where the people who were gonna be next to him awkwardly shuffled slightly away from him- and it was pretty noticable by the looks the other tables were giving him
Still, there was only one thing in Azrael's mind...
"Hopefully no one tries to take my umbrella, I should have kept it with me instead of leaving it outside."

Jaffa’s heart stopped. Gryffindor. Azrael had been sorted into Gryffindor. She’d watched him leave his umbrella behind before approaching the chair, heard the jeers and laughs from those seated near her when the sorting hat announced his house.
Disgusted. She was disgusted by them. How could they? They didn’t even know him, they didn’t know a thing about him! But then again, what had she first thought of him. And, besides, not everyone had snickered, if she wanted to make more friends she’d have to be careful whom she picked.
She turned back to watch the remaining students get sorted, glancing back towards the Gryffindor table every once in a while, eyes seeking out Azrael.
Her stomach grumbled and the list of names grew shorter and shorter. When would the food arrive? she thought impatiently. She turned and asked the same to the girl nearest to her. The only response she received was a mumble for her to shush and watch the sorting. She rolled her eyes Sometimes people could just be so… ugh![\i]
As the last handful of students sauntered towards their tables, the headmaster stepped forwards from where he stood to give speech. He welcomed students, old and new, to Hogwarts and succinctly went over some of the rules etc wrapping up by beginning the feast.
Jada looked towards the door expectantly. Where was the food? Would there be house elves bringing it in? PoP Rows upon rows of dishes from all over the world appeared on golden platters. Oh my goodness.. her jaw hung loose in amazement as she watched other students piling up their plates before quickly starting to shovel food onto her own. Other issues could be solved later but right now, food.

As the food arrived, Azrael started eating slowly- the food tastes delicious! It really makes you want to go in for seconds.
as he looked up, he realized that the Gryffindor table was pretty quiet...some kids were staring at him, especially the ones nearest to him- he didn't think anything of it, and simply continued eating- after all, it's not like people don't normally stare at him, especially when he's sitting near them.
It was unfortunate that Azrael and Jada didn't end up in the same house, especially when Azrael seemed to be getting along well with her...he's not one to have many friends- or, friends at all- so now being in different houses will probably set Azrael back on the whole socializing thing.
as he looked down at his food- he realized that he should probably talk to Jada when they leave the great hall- although their houses seemed to be rivals, maybe they could still talk? It's not like his house mates seem to care...well, at least not about what HE does, he's too eerie for them to look at him and even think about saying anything, because honestly- he really does look like he'd possess you in your sleep...so Azrael isn't surprised they'd turn a blind eye.
the chatter seemed lively everywhere, kids were even passing around food- he took a chance to pause and look up, eyes scanning the tables when they finally landed on the Slytherin table, and thus ended up on Jada- he waited for her to notice him, before blinking and mouthing:
"Meet me outside?"
Alongside a small gesture towards the door in case she didn't get what he said... they'd have to finish their food, and then maybe think about meeting outside.
______________________§___________________for now though- they could each think of something to do once they get out.

Azrael was mouthing something and pointing. Jada had never been good at lip reading, squinting in an attempt to decipher what he was saying. He was pointing towards the exit. Meed? mead? meat? Meet! He must want them to meet outside the hall. She assumed he meant after the feast, clearly. She mouthed back 'Okay', with a thumbs up. She wondered what he wanted to discuss. What if he doesn't want to be friends anymore? Will I lose my first friend not even a day after meeting him? She didn't know.
She returned her attention to the plate before her, pushing the remaining crumbs back and forth with her fork. She wondered if they would serve pudding. They had to right? It was the first day. She looked around at her peers, chatting to their neighbours. They all seemed to know each other, either from previous school years or from the train ride here. She wondered what the dorming situation would be like. Would all the girls in her year sleep together or would they be split into smaller rooms. She really hoped it would be the latter, she valued her privacy and own space. Besides, it would be easier to get to know people in smaller lots rather than a huge group.
A faint PoP brought her focus back to the hall. The dessert had appeared in place of the previous food. She smiled as she caught a whiff of apple crumble, her favourite.
Once everyone had finished eating, the dished vanished once more, the headmaster said a few more words and we were dismissed. First years were to follow their Prefects back to their dorms. But what about Azrael? she thought. She would have to sneak away from the group upon leaving the hall.
She stood up and merged into the crowd of other Slytherin first years, all heading towards the exit. Upon reaching the exit, she drifted off towards the side, finding a slightly obscured corner to wait for Azrael.
