Fifth Prefect and Friend
17 February 2020
The Grounds
Mid-Afternoon, Post Classes
Mari Haynes was surprised that she had not been fired from her job of Fifth Prefect of Hufflepuff.
Of all the things to hold onto, Mari still thought that she held the title, though it had all resulted from a mistake many months ago. She still had her homemade prefect's badge and wore it, but due to all the things that she was dealing with and all her emotional instability, Mari, lately, had drifted into the shadows rather than really do anything with her position. But Professor Browne had not come to her and fired her, so, though her position was a farce, she still thought she had a job. The funny thing, though, was that so long ago he had promised her a job, yet she had never learned what that job entailed. Perhaps she would ask him, now that she felt a little bit more stable. But for now, she needed to get back into the swing of things.
Another traumatic thing that had happened to Mari over the past year was that she had ended up with a pet rat, Friend. Friend wasn't her favorite pet, but she had kept him plump, all the same. Sometimes Mari felt that Friend was the only thing that kept her going, more than her fake relationships. When you have something to care for, life doesn't seem so bleak. Occasionally, she realized that she felt small pangs of affection toward the creature, even though he still kind of grossed her out, because...he was a rat. No sane person would like a rat, would they? Yet there had been plenty of students who had come to Hogwarts, acted more sane than Mari had been, and liked rats...so maybe it was that no sane person wouldn't like a rat? Maybe Friend would help thaw the chill that seemed to be always lurking around her.
Mari thought that today, the day when she officially, really tried to immerse herself back into Hogwarts culture, would be a good time to test this hypothesis. She scooped up her pet rat, pinned the glittery, cardboard prefect's badge onto her robes, and made her way to the grounds. When she stepped out of the castle, the crisp air greeted her with its familiar comfort. She had been taking walks to clear her mind, so the freshness greeted her as though they had the storied history of eternal friends.
Usually, though, Mari had a purpose when she was on the grounds - she would go for those walks to clear her head. Now, she had friend, who seemed as happy outside as she, but she had already taken a walk today and didn't really need to do any more thinking. She was trying to get back into the speed of things with her prefect's duties, but with no other students around her, Mari wasn't sure what, exactly to do. Should she walk? Should she call out and ask if anyone needed assistance?
Instead, the second year turned to her rat, one of the most consistent presences in her life these days. With a small upwards flick of corners of her lips, Mari murmured, "Well Friend? Now what?"

Fifth Prefect and Friend
[quote]Marla Quinlan was surprised she had resigned and not been fired from her position as Gryffindor prefect.
After all, Marla on multiple occasions broke a concerning amount of rules. You'd think that as one she'd try to cut down on the mischievous activities. But it just made them easier to get away with, if anything. With her title and badge came an invisible shield, one that made her almost immune from losing any small dispute with the three magic words "I'm a prefect", or simply getting picked on by older students in the corridors. Though it was a bit ironic, considering she was always so resistant to authority figures, and now she missed being one. But mostly, it was the prefects' bathroom privileges she yearned to have back the most. Every scent imaginable was available in the hundreds of faucets above the tub, though the word 'pool' would suit it much better. The bathroom was huge, and now going back to the regular ones, she only realized how much she took for granted when it was too late.
But on the bright side, now the young Gryffindor could spend her late nights reading and eating sweets she had snuck into her pocket from the great hall instead of patrolling. God, patrolling. That stuff was practically torture, she always had to bring coffee and stomach it down to stay awake, no matter how disgusting the liquid was. How did grown-ups do it? Drinking that nightmarish bean juice? For fun? It was horrible. If Marla had to choose between death and drinking a whole cup of black coffee, she'd go with the former in an instant. The sheer thought of it touching her lips made her nauseous.
As she stepped onto the grounds, a gust of wind hit her like a brick, her copper hair getting blown in every direction as she swatted it from her face. Winter was finally weening now that it was mid-February, but that didn't mean it wasn't cold. She was wearing just a bit too little clothing under her robes, causing chills to be sent down her spine. But it wasn't horrid, and there was no way she was walking back to the Gryffindor common room for a stupid scarf, so it would do. Plus, she had finally taken her owl, Icarus out for a bit of sunlight. He sat comfortably on her arm, and while the owl was not fully grown, Marla was still struggling to keep him up being as skinny as she was. And so, with her arm nearly giving out, she gave Icarus a small shove to motion that he could fly now. He obliged, launching off of her arm and flying off into the sky.
Now with her pet off in the sky doing who knows what, what was she to do on a day like this? Marla had brought a book, but she didn't really feel like sitting down, the ground was still wet from a few rain showers in the previous week. And she wasn't really in the mood to stand and read... So maybe she'd just walk for a bit? Yeah, that'd do for now.
So she spent a bit of her time walking until a sudden wariness traveled through her body, one that showed up out of practically nowhere, but was now extremely present. While she wanted to think nothing of it, Marla couldn't help herself and began to look around. Why in the world was she feeling this way? And then she spotted the supposed culprit. Mari Haynes. After all, she was the only person that Marla saw in the area. The Gryffindor thought of Mari was quite sweet, especially from when they first met in the small hall, though she had heard from several others that she was quite the...cassanova now. So, it was a toss up of if Marla was to say hi or not, but maybe the rumors were false, right? And if they weren't, she could just say that her owl had to poop or something.
And so, she made her way up to the Hufflepuff, who she noticed was holding a rat.
"Well Friend? Now what?" She heard Mari whisper, and immediately snorted. She was talking to a rat. A rat. And named it Friend? Oh, that was hilarious. And a bit sad. Maybe the girl did need a friend though, if she was naming her pet after one. So, instead of running for the hills like her instincts screamed for her to do, Marla tapped her on the shoulder.
"Hey, Mari! Nice..." What was nice about Mari, again? "Rat!" She sputtered out with a smile, and looked down, noticing a strange piece of cloth on her robes, in the shape of a badge. "What's that?" She pointed to the thing on her robes resembling a badge in an attempt to start a conversation, even though it was mostly out of pity.
