The November wind blew cold that day. It was as if it grew colder as the days grew closer to December. Wow. December. How could it be so close yet so far away? Christmas was going to be different this year. This year, Avery was going home. Her real home in Wales where she would get to spend what she thought would be her last exciting Christmas with her family. A feeling of dread always crept up her insides when she thought about Christmas as her grandfather had fallen very ill again. This time, he was weaker, and that worried her. What if he didn't make it to the new year? How would Avery push herself through school?

Avery stood there staring at the grass beneath her feet. The wind gently caressing her face with its icy fingers. Avery pulled her red sweater tighter around her. Though it was no match for the November wind. It was as if the wind had found even the smallest holes in her sweater and seeped in. Leaving her body chilled and stripped of any warmth that she once had.

The cold was the least of things on the lioness' mind as she viewed the world around her. It was that moment that she glanced up and was surprised to find a girl she recognized. The girl was older than Avery. She knew that much. She also knew the girl was a Slytherin that played on the Quidditch team the year before. Avery had actually played the girl and her team in her first match that year before.

Avery had never actually spoken to the girl. She had only competed against her in Quidditch. Avery honestly didn't even know her name. That alone sparked her interest in getting to know the girl. Maybe the two could get past their teams' rivalry and actually become friends? It was always an option, so why not give it a try?

"Hey. You're on the Slytherin Quidditch team, right? I believe we competed against each other last year. I'm Avery. The second string Gryffindor Seeker, and you are?" Avery smiled. Unsure of what to do or say next or even how the girl would react. Their teams were rivals, so all Avery could hope was that wouldn't get in the way of Avery getting to know the girl. For some reason she had the feeling that maybe they really would become friends, but, of course, that could also just be her wishful thinking getting the better of her.
