The steps to the Owlery were slippery from an icy cold night that had just passed. It was early in the morning. Dew was still in patches covering the grass and a cold wind blew leaves frozen to a crisp around the grounds. Even though she was used to starting her day bright and early, today the Hufflepuff girl was still in a sleepy mood. She had stayed up all night before to write another letter to her family, she was anxious to read their reply and tell her more about how her aunt’s pregnancy was evolving. But before she could receive an answer, she would of course have to post her letter in the first place.
Today the Hufflepuff’s outfit was fit for the weather. It seemed the start of a cold but sunny day so she wore an oversized, warm sweater to snuggle in. It was an item she had discovered on one of her visits to the thrift shop in her town. The knitted sweater was silver coloured and had dark grey stripes horizontally across it. Paired with casual blue denim and her favourite lace-up biker boots. As she did more frequently, her black, long hair was in a braid that rested on her back. At the tip of her braid, her most liked, red ribbon tied in a bow. Above her clothes she wore her winter cloak, who she had finally managed to find in all her still unpacked luggage. She didn’t have time to unpack, there were more important things to do. Like exploring the castle, reading every book she could find in Hogwarts and so on.
Fyriel’s hands were deep in her pockets to keep them warm but when she reached the start of the staircase that lead to the Owlery, she took them out and rubbed her thighs. Fyriel yawned and tilted her head up towards the stairs in front of her. “That’s a long way up”, she sighed to herself. A stiff feeling still lingered in her legs from climbing all the stairs inside the Castle, she was now at the point of no return. To the top of the Owlery. With a dreadful, heavy feeling in her legs, she almost dragged herself up the first few steps. After a few more, she had already gotten used to performing this exercise once again and she picked up her pace. Quickly she was lightly skipping over the steps, barely touching each one with the tip of her shoes. It came as a surprise to Fyriel when she lost her grip on the ground and her foot slipped off the next step. While Fyriel fell downwards, she reached out her hand to grab the stone railing that made the barrier of the staircase. Alas, the morning dew had covered the railing in a thin film that had now formed an almost invisible layer of ice. The first year was not able to hold on and plunged down a couple more steps. If the steps weren’t so glassy, she would have probably only spiralled down one or two steps. Unfortunately, Fyriel didn’t have that luck today. “Wooaaah!! What is happ-!”, she wailed before she hit her landing spot. Fyriel touched down on her right arm and hit her head on the inner wall that held the staircase. A bit dizzy and disoriented, Fyriel rubbed her head with her unharmed hand and lied there, trying to puzzle together where she felt the most pain.

The owlery had felt lonely and forgetting. Like it was on its own island, only occupied by thousands of birds and one terribly shocked girl. If one were to stumble upon her, they would witness a truly uncharacteristic sight.
On the edge of the circular room, stood a girl with an upbringing, so dark, no light should ever shine besides her. She was still overlooking the window where her mother’s owl had left. As if hoping it all would be a lie.
From behind, a pitch-black cloak was all that could be seen. A stark contrast with the bright light engulfing her. It was a sight fitted for a fallen angel, terrified of God’s orders.
If one looked closely, they could see something clutched in her hand. A letter, bringing tales so dark and terrifying it couldn’t be repeated. After an hour of reading it and re-reading it, the letters spell was activated. Rosalind watched the fire slowly spread over it. She felt slightly fascinated with something so beautiful, yet so dark. When it reached its end the fire slowly licked her fingers, burning the tip of her thumb and index finger. Rosalind couldn’t be bothered. The warmth was welcome. After all, it burned the thing that hurt her so much. She slightly flicked her fingers to make the ashes flutter down.
She could almost feel her joints cracking after so long in the cold wind. She felt like a statue. Still and silent. She had since long forgotten how cold she felt or how awful the stench was.
After a while she saw the sun arrive on the horizon. Beautiful collars splashed across a canvas. A
godlike artwork. Rosalind breathed deeply in and waited for her sorrows to disappear.
Then, as if struck by lightning she swiftly spun around. Aggravated hoots could be heard all around her. Some even flew away from her. They had not expected their statue to move again. Rosalind could feel the angry glances of the owls. She carefully stroke the head of one of the closest owls, as if giving it an apology.
She shook her shoulders to look less tense. ‘No one should ever see me like this. The rules still apply and the honour must be kept intact.’ Rosalind quickly patted her pockets for a ribbon and tied her hair into a half updo. She had found a liking to styling her hair into these elegant Viking braids. And now no one would see, that she had let the wind play with her hair for hours. Everything tight in place. She stroked her cloak one more time and pulled her hood up. As if to reassure herself that everything would be okay in time.
Then she took tentative steps towards the stairs. Carefully, she secured her grip on the railing, never trust icy stairs. ‘Rule number one: always be careful, no one can see you fail.’ Her gaze was locked with the first step as she set her foot precisely in the middle of it. Rosalind could hear slight shuffling and looked up. But she couldn’t see anyone. "Probably still too far away", she mumbled and shook her shoulders slightly. She continued on her path carefully.
Then out of nowhere, she heard a loud cry and mumbling followed it. Rose couldn’t understand the words. They were clearly too far away. Rose held unto the stone railing and hosted herself partly over them. She was trying see were the cry for help had come from. ‘There! Just passed that slippery turn.’, she thought. Rosalind eyes widened in concern.
“Are you okay? Do you need help?”, she shouted. Her concern was clear in her tone.

Fyriel layed on the in-ice covered steps. A terrible pounding feeling filled her head. It felt as if her heart wasn’t in her chest anymore, but instead in her skull, pulsing and throbbing angrily in reaction to Fyriel’s tumble. For a moment she thought she heard a voice calling out. She couldn’t pinpoint exactly what was said or where the words came from. “Do you need help?”, a muffled sound broke through what felt like something stuffing her ear canal. The sound got clearer as it reached her mind. The Hufflepuff was regaining her focus and awareness of her surroundings. “U-uhm, I’m not sure. I feel a little dizzy”, Fyriel managed to utter back to the mysterious voice. She looked around but couldn’t spot another student. Maybe it’s a ghost? Or I hit my head really, really hard… Fyriel’s eyes searched for the source of the call once more and when she looked up, her eyes met their objective.
It was a girl. A girl with white hair which the wind played with as she peeked over the edge of the railing. She stood a number or steps higher than where Fyriel was lounging. The mystery girl had to heave herself partially over the stone railing to see where Fyriel was. From the point of view Fyriel was, the mystery girl seemed almost like a spirit. A heavenly being sent down for her. Perhaps it was her guardian angel that came down from her divine home to give Fyriel a proper preaching on how she wasn’t careful enough… Fyriel shook her head in disbelief of her own deductions and glanced back at the girl a few meters above her. She did look like an angel though. Long white-silver hair in an elegant styling. Any untied hair fluttering in the wind while the sunrays behind her enhanced the impression of beauty. Am I dreaming or is something strange going on here?
Fyriel decided to test her luck and dare to ask the enchanting girl: “A-are you m-my… guardian angel?” With a boggled look on the Hufflepuff’s face, she stared at the silhouette of the girl above her. Expecting her to gracefully glide through the air and tell Fyriel about the celestial beings that existed above the wizarding world. Besides a vague silhouette and the wondrous bright hair, there wasn’t much more Fyriel could make out from where she layed. The sunrays stung her eyes whenever she looked in the direction of the girl.

Minutes passed and she still had not received any answer. Her question even seemed to echo around the halls. Still she received no answer. Rosalind looked around one more time at where she imagined the cry had come from. She leaned her body just a little more over the railing. Then suddenly she could feel herself slipping a little, just an inch. But it was enough to send her heart sky rocking. Her eyes widened and her grip on the railing increased even more. Her fingers whitening with the effort to keep herself safe. This could have ended badly. Slowly she set herself safely back on her feet. Then after having successfully unravelled a particularly dangerous situation, she let out a little sigh of content. Nothing better to get the heart racing, even if the slip had been slightly scary. She still slightly overlooked the railings. Still clearly insight of any possible onlookers from below.
Rose carefully rubbed her eyes. She felt so drained already. But that is what hours of brooding in the cold could do for a person. Even if they were used to these conditions. Had the letter thrown her of so much that she imagined the cry for help? But then almost when she lost hope, a faint stuttering could be heard. It was so faint, so silent, that Rose felt grateful that her hearing had picked it up.
“U-Uhm, I’m not sure. I feel a little dizzy.” This made the veela perk up again. It had been uttered so long after her own response and seemed so weak. Did they lose consciousness? If they did… ‘God, imagine the pain they might be in.’ Rose slightly shook her shoulders, already familiar with how much pain to expect and what to do to help. Rose glimpsed over the railing again. Her silver-white hair slightly falling over the edges. Then she could faintly hear. “A-are you m-my guardian angel?” Rosalind eyes widened. She must be really out of her mind. “Just hold on, I’m coming to you.” Rosalind cried out.
Carefully she went down the slippery stairs, every step as precise as the ones before. Racing towards the sound with every bone in her body. The veela could see little ice clouds after every hurried breath. Rosalind slowed down slightly when she reached a letter, still curled almost if it was stuck in its fall. After some consideration Rose could see how carefully constructed it was. A letter to a loving and warm family. It looked to be handled with care, but now the edges of it were slightly crumbled and wet. Rose quickly wiped the snow remains of off it and tried to ease the dog-ear out of it. Then her glance shifted and she began observing the damage that was done to the victim itself. She quickly pocketed the letter in her robe, the top of it still visible, as she hurried to the girl and crouched next to her.
“No one called me a guardian angel before.” Rose sheepishly said, as she tucked a stray hair away. “But I can try, if you want.” She added. “Do you need some help getting up?” Then she offered her hand, palms up, as if the girl was a slightly spooked creature. In Rose’s defence the girl still looked out of it and had just called her an angel. She looked at the girl with a slightly confused gaze, not sure how she would react.

Laying there, helpless and unaware of what had just happened, a silver-haired girl had come to help Fyriel. The girl offered help to get up and Fyriel thankfully grabbed the girl’s hands. As Fyriel stood upright she still felt a dizziness filling her head and had some trouble with her balance. After adapting to the situation for a few minutes, the young huffle started to notice a throbbing pain on the back of her head. Absently rubbing it to ease the pain, she looked at the icy steps and spoke “I suppose I should have been a bit more careful on these slippery steps." Fyriel’s eyes met the other girls eyes and Fy smirked. “Thanks for helping me up, I’m not sure how long it would have taken me to do it on my own.” The hufflepuff student felt the pain in her head worsen and spreading throughout her skull. A nauseous feeling came over her and she swallowed a few times to stop herself from throwing up. “I think I might need to go to the Infirmary, I feel sick…”, Fyriel admitted with a grunt. A couple of bruises were appearing on her arms and she assumed she would have some marks on her legs too. That was quite a nasty tumble…
Fyriel looked back at the silver-haired beauty and felt… intimidated. Not the kind of intimidation you feel when someone looks scary and like they could easily kick your butt. No, she was intimidated because of the girls looks. Fyriel felt drawn to the girl for some odd reason she couldn’t put her finger on. She admitted the girl was stunning with her silver locks and dark grey eyes, they even had a glimpse of a red tint to them. Fyriel had mesmerizing eyes herself and had seen many others with noteworthy eyes but these… These were different. Something about this helpful girl was peculiar. Hmm, maybe it’s just because my head is spinning…
The young huffle asked her rescuer;” Would you- Would you mind walking with me to the school nurse? I don’t think I’ll make it their by myself… I’m Fyriel Starlingword by the way.” After asking the girl to accompany her Fyriel felt anxious, she thought perhaps she shouldn’t have put the girl on the spot like that by asking her this. Fyriel added with a smile and a hesitant look on her face; ”But if you don’t have time I understand, I’m sure I’ll manage”.
